Set of independencies and Tutte polynomial of matroids over a domain
In this work, we study matroids over a domain and several classical combinatorial and algebraic invariants related. We define their Grothendieck-Tutte polynomial $T_{\mathcal{M}}(x,y)$, extending the definition given by Fink and Moci in 2016, and we show that such polynomial has the classical deletion-contraction property.
Moreover, we study the set of independencies for a realizable matroid over a domain, generalizing the definition of \emph{poset of torsions} $Gr(\mathcal{M})$ given by the second author in 2017. This is a union of identical simplicial posets as for (quasi-)arithmetic matroids. The new notions harmonize naturally through the face module $N_\mathcal{M}$ of the matroid over a domain.
Whenever $Gr(\mathcal{M})$ is a finite poset, the Hilbert series $N_\mathcal{M}(t)$ of its face module is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial $T_{\mathcal{M}}(x,y)$. Further, for arrangements of codimension-one abelian subvarities of an elliptic curve admitting complex multiplication, we extend certain results of Bibby and we provide an algebraic interpretation of the elliptic Tutte polynomial.

Ikeda-Mihalcea-Naruse's double Schubert polynomials represent the equivariant cohomology classes of Schubert varieties in the type C flag varieties. The goal of this paper is to obtain a new tableau formula of these polynomials associated to vexillary signed permutations introduced by Anderson-Fulton. To achieve that goal, we introduce flagged factorial (Schur) $Q$-functions, combinatorially defined in terms of (flagged) marked shifted tableaux for flagged strict partitions, and prove their Schur-Pfaffian formula. As an application, we also obtain a new combinatorial formula of factorial $Q$-functions of Ivanov in which monomials bijectively correspond to flagged marked shifted tableaux.
On the speed of algebraically defined graph classes

The speed of a class of graphs counts the number of graphs on the vertex set $\lbrace 1,\dots, n\rbrace$ inside the class as a function of $n$. In this paper, we investigate this function for many classes of graphs that naturally arise in discrete geometry, for example intersection graphs of segments or disks in the plane. While upper bounds follow from Warren's theorem (a variant of a theorem of Milnor and Thom), all the previously known lower bounds were obtained from ad hoc constructions for very specific classes. We prove a general theorem giving an essentially tight lower bound for the number of graphs on $\lbrace 1,\dots, n\rbrace$ whose edges are defined using the signs of a given finite list of polynomials, assuming these polynomials satisfy some reasonable conditions. This in particular implies lower bounds for the speed of many different classes of intersection graphs, which essentially match the known upper bounds. Our general result also gives essentially tight lower bounds for counting containment orders of various families of geometric objects, including circle orders and angle orders. Some of the applications presented in this paper are new, whereas others recover results of Alon-Scheinerman, Fox, McDiarmid-Müller and Shi. For the proof of our result we use some tools from algebraic geometry and differential topology.

For a poset whose Hasse diagram is a rooted plane forest $F$, we consider the corresponding tree descent polynomial $A_F(q)$, which is a generating function of the number of descents of the labelings of $F$. When the forest is a path, $A_F(q)$ specializes to the classical Eulerian polynomial. We prove that the coefficient sequence of $A_F(q)$ is unimodal and that if $\{T_{n}\}$ is a sequence of trees with $|T_{n}| = n$ and maximal down degree $D_{n} = O(n^{0.5-ε})$ then the number of descents in a labeling of $T_{n}$ is asymptotically normal.

In this article we establish the asymptotic behavior of generating functions related to the exponential sum over finite fields of elementary symmetric functions and their perturbations. This asymptotic behavior allows us to calculate the probability generating function of the probability that the the elementary symmetric polynomial of degree $k$ and its perturbations returns $β\in \mathbb{F}_q$ where $\mathbb{F}_q$ represents the field of $q$ elements. Our study extends many of the results known for perturbations over the binary field to any finite field. In particular, we establish when a particular perturbation is asymptotically balanced over a prime field and provide a construction to find such perturbations over any finite field.
An SOS counterexample to an inequality of symmetric functions

It is known that differences of symmetric functions corresponding to various bases are nonnegative on the nonnegative orthant exactly when the partitions defining them are comparable in dominance order. The only exception is the case of homogeneous symmetric functions where it is only known that dominance of the partitions implies nonnegativity of the corresponding difference of symmetric functions. It was conjectured by Cuttler, Greene, and Skandera in 2011 that the converse also holds, as in the cases of the monomial, elementary, power-sum, and Schur bases. In this paper we provide a counterexample, showing that homogeneous symmetric functions break the pattern. We use semidefinite programming to find an explicit sums of squares decomposition of the polynomial $H_{44} - H_{521}$ as a sum of 41 squares. This rational certificate of nonnegativity disproves the conjecture, since a polynomial which is a sum of squares cannot be negative, and since the partitions 44 and 521 are incomparable in dominance order.

Let $Γ$ be a simple graph and $I_Γ(x)$ its multivariate independence polynomial. The main result of this paper is the characterization of chordal graphs as the only $Γ$ for which the power series expansion of $I_Γ^{-1}(x)$ is Horn hypergeometric.

We provide the foundation of the spectral analysis of the Laplacian on the orbital Schreier graphs of the Basilica group, the iterated monodromy group of the quadratic polynomial $z^2-1$. This group is an important example in the class of self-similar amenable but not elementary amenable finite automata groups studied by Grigorchuk, Żuk, \v Sunić, Bartholdi, Virág, Nekrashevych, Kaimanovich, Nagnibeda et al. We prove that the spectrum of the Laplacian has infinitely many gaps and that the support of the KNS Spectral Measure is a Cantor set. Moreover, on a generic blowup, the spectrum coincides with this Cantor set, and is pure point with localized eigenfunctions and eigenvalues located at the endpoints of the gaps.

Let $I$ and $J$ be edge ideals in a polynomial ring $R = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ with $I \subseteq J$. In this paper, we obtain a general upper and lower bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of $IJ$ in terms of certain invariants associated with $I$ and $J$. Using these results, we explicitly compute the regularity of $IJ$ for several classes of edge ideals. Let $J_1,\ldots,J_d$ be edge ideals in a polynomial ring $R$ with $J_1 \subseteq \cdots \subseteq J_d$. Finally, we compute the precise expression for the regularity of $J_1 J_2\cdots J_d$ when $d \in \{3,4\}$ and $J_d$ is the edge ideal of complete graph.

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph and $J(G)$ denote its cover ideal in a polynomial ring over a field $\mathbb{K}$. In this paper, we show that all symbolic powers of cover ideals of certain vertex decomposable graphs have linear quotients. Using these results, we give various conditions on a subset $S$ of the vertices of $G$ so that all symbolic powers of vertex cover ideals of $G \cup W(S)$, obtained from $G$ by adding a whisker to each vertex in $S$, have linear quotients. For instance, if $S$ is a vertex cover of $G$, then all symbolic powers of $J(G \cup W(S))$ have linear quotients. Moreover, we compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of symbolic powers of certain cover ideals.

This paper deals with distinct computational methods to enumerate the set $\mathrm{PLR}(r,s,n;m)$ of $r \times s$ partial Latin rectangles on $n$ symbols with $m$ non-empty cells. For fixed $r$, $s$, and $n$, we prove that the size of this set is a symmetric polynomial of degree $3m$, and we determine the leading terms (the monomials of degree $3m$ through $3m-9$) using inclusion-exclusion. For $m \leq 13$, exact formulas for these symmetric polynomials are determined using a chromatic polynomial method. Adapting Sade's method for enumerating Latin squares, we compute the exact size of $\mathrm{PLR}(r,s,n;m)$, for all $r \leq s \leq n \leq 7$, and all $r \leq s \leq 6$ when $n=8$. Using an algebraic geometry method together with Burnside's Lemma, we enumerate isomorphism, isotopism, and main classes when $r \leq s \leq n \leq 6$. Numerical results have been cross-checked where possible.

Motivated by a question in Schubert calculus, we study the interplay of quasisymmetric polynomials with the divided symmetrization operator, which was introduced by Postnikov in the context of volume polynomials of permutahedra. Divided symmetrization is a linear form which acts on the space of polynomials in $n$ indeterminates of degree $n-1$. We first show that divided symmetrization applied to a quasisymmetric polynomial in $m$ indeterminates can be easily determined. Several examples with a strong combinatorial flavor are given. Then, we prove that the divided symmetrization of any polynomial can be naturally computed with respect to a direct sum decomposition due to Aval-Bergeron-Bergeron involving the ideal generated by positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials in $n$ indeterminates.
Revisiting a Cutting Plane Method for Perfect Matchings

In 2016, Chandrasekaran, Végh, and Vempala published a method to solve the minimum-cost perfect matching problem on an arbitrary graph by solving a strictly polynomial number of linear programs. However, their method requires a strong uniqueness condition, which they imposed by using perturbations of the form $c(i)=c_0(i)+2^{-i}$. On large graphs (roughly $m>100$), these perturbations lead to cost values that exceed the precision of floating-point formats used by typical linear programming solvers for numerical calculations. We demonstrate, by a sequence of counterexamples, that perturbations are required for the algorithm to work, motivating our formulation of a general method that arrives at the same solution to the problem as Chandrasekaran et al. but overcomes the limitations described above by solving multiple linear programs without using perturbations. We then give an explicit algorithm that exploits are method, and show that this new algorithm still runs in strongly polynomial time.
Counting Candy Crush Configurations

A k-stable c-coloured Candy Crush grid is a weak proper c-colouring of a particular type of k-uniform hypergraph. In this paper we introduce a fully polynomial randomised approximation scheme (FPRAS) which counts the number of k-stable c-coloured Candy Crush grids of a given size (m, n) for certain values of c and k. We implemented this algorithm on Matlab, and found that in a Candy Crush grid with7 available colours there are approximately 4.3*10^61 3-stable colourings. (Note that, typical Candy Crush games are played with 6 colours and our FPRAS is not guaranteed to work in expected polynomial time with k= 3 and c= 6.) We also discuss the applicability of this FPRAS to the problem of counting the number of weak c-colourings of other, more general hypergraphs.

Critical Points, Critical Values, and a Determinant Identity for Complex Polynomials

Given any n-tuple of complex numbers, one can canonically define a polynomial of degree n+1 that has the entries of this n-tuple as its critical points. In 2002, Beardon, Carne, and Ng studied a map $θ\colon \mathbb{C}^n\to \mathbb{C}^n$ which outputs the critical values of the canonical polynomial constructed from the input, and they proved that this map is onto. Along the way, they showed that $θ$ is a local homeomorphism whenever the entries of the input are distinct and nonzero, and, implicitly, they produced a polynomial expression for the Jacobian determinant of $θ$. In this article we extend and generalize both the local homeomorphism result and the elegant determinant identity to analogous situations where the critical points occur with multiplicities. This involves stratifying $\mathbb{C}^n$ according to which coordinates are equal and generalizing $θ$ to a similar map $\mathbb{C}^\ell \to \mathbb{C}^\ell$ where $\ell$ is the number of distinct critical points. The more complicated determinant identity that we establish is closely connected to the multinomial identity known as Dyson's conjecture.
Interval-Permutation Segment Graphs
In this work, we introduce the \emph{interval permutation segment (IP-SEG)} model that naturally generalizes the geometric intersection models of interval and permutation graphs. We study properties of two graph classes that arise from the IP-SEG model and present a family of forbidden subgraphs for these classes. In addition, we present polynomial algorithms for the clique and independent set problems on these classes, when the model is given as part of the input.
Perfect graphs for domination games
Let $γ_g(G)$ and $γ_{tg}(G)$ be the game domination number and the total game domination number of a graph $G$, respectively. Then $G$ is $γ_g$-perfect (resp. $γ_{tg}$-perfect), if every induced subgraph $F$ of $G$ satisfies $γ_g(F)=γ(F)$ (resp. $γ_{tg}(F)=γ_t(F)$). A recursive characterization of $γ_g$-perfect graphs is derived. The characterization yields a polynomial recognition algorithm for $γ_g$-perfect graphs. It is proved that every minimally $γ_g$-imperfect graph has domination number $2$. All minimally $γ_g$-imperfect triangle-free graphs are determined. It is also proved that $γ_{tg}$-perfect graphs are precisely $\overline{2P_3}$-free cographs.

We consider the problem of finding a subgraph of a given graph minimizing the sum of given functions at vertices evaluated at their subgraph degrees. While the problem is NP-hard already for bipartite graphs when the functions are convex on one side and concave on the other, we show that when all functions are convex, the problem can be solved in polynomial time for any graph. We also provide polynomial time solutions for bipartite graphs with one side fixed for arbitrary functions, and for arbitrary graphs when all but a fixed number of functions are either nondecreasing or nonincreasing. We note that the general factor problem and the (l,u)-factor problem over a graph are special cases of our problem, as well as the intriguing exact matching problem. The complexity of the problem remains widely open, particularly for arbitrary functions over complete graphs.

Permutations in the image of the pop-stack operator are said to be pop-stacked. We give a polynomial-time algorithm to count pop-stacked permutations up to a fixed length and we use it to compute the first 1000 terms of the corresponding counting sequence. Only the first 16 terms had previously been computed. With the 1000 terms we prove some negative results concerning the nature of the generating function for pop-stacked permutations. We also predict the asymptotic behavior of the counting sequence using differential approximation.
