A basis for a quotient of symmetric polynomials
Consider the ring $\mathcal{S}$ of symmetric polynomials in $k$ variables over an arbitrary base ring $\mathbf{k}$. Fix $k$ scalars $a_{1},a_{2},\ldots,a_{k}\in\mathbf{k}$. Let $I$ be the ideal of $\mathcal{S}$ generated by $h_{n-k+1}-a_{1},h_{n-k+2}-a_{2},\ldots,h_{n}-a_{k}$, where $h_{i}$ is the $i$-th complete homogeneous symmetric polynomial. The quotient ring $\mathcal{S}/I$ generalizes both the usual and the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian. We show that $\mathcal{S}/I$ has a $\mathbf{k}$-module basis consisting of (residue classes of) Schur polynomials fitting into an $\left( n-k\right) \times k$-rectangle; and that its multiplicative structure constants satisfy the same $S_3$-symmetry as those of the Grassmannian cohomology. We prove a Pieri rule and a "rim hook algorithm", and conjecture a positivity property generalizing that of Gromov-Witten invariants. We construct two further bases of $\mathcal{S}/I$ as well. We also study the quotient of the whole polynomial ring (not just the symmetric polynomials) by the ideal generated by the same $k$ polynomials as $I$.

Tutte Short Exact Sequences of Graphs
Published in Combinatorial Theory, Volume 2, Issue 2, 2022 • Search Publication
We associate two modules, the $G$-parking critical module and the toppling critical module, to an undirected connected graph $G$. The $G$-parking critical module and the toppling critical module are canonical modules (with suitable twists) of quotient rings of the well-studied $G$-parking function ideal and the toppling ideal, respectively. For each critical module, we establish a Tutte-like short exact sequence relating the modules associated to $G$, an edge contraction $G/e$ and an edge deletion $G \setminus e$ ($e$ is a non-bridge). We obtain purely combinatorial consequences of Tutte short exact sequences. For instance, we reprove a theorem of Merino that the critical polynomial of a graph is an evaluation of its Tutte polynomial, and relate the vanishing of certain combinatorial invariants (the number of acyclic orientations on connected partition graphs satisfying a unique sink property) of $G/e$ to the equality of the corresponding invariants of $G$ and $G \setminus e$.

An Euler phi function for the Eisenstein integers and some applications
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorial Number Theory, 20, Paper No. A20 (2020), 28pp • Search Publication
The Euler phi function on a given integer $n$ yields the number of positive integers less than $n$ that are relatively prime to $n$. Equivalently, it gives the order of the group of units in the quotient ring $\mathbb{Z}/(n)$. We generalize the Euler phi function to the Eisenstein integer ring $\mathbb{Z}[ρ]$ where $ρ$ is the primitive third root of unity $e^{2πi/3}$ by finding the order of the group of units in the ring $\mathbb{Z}[ρ]/(θ)$ for any given Eisenstein integer $θ$. As one application we investigate a sufficiency criterion for when certain unit groups $\left(\mathbb{Z}[ρ]/(γ^n)\right)^\times$ are cyclic where $γ$ is prime in $\mathbb{Z}[ρ]$ and $n \in \mathbb{N}$, thereby generalizing well-known results of similar applications in the integers and some lesser known results in the Gaussian integers. As another application, we prove that the celebrated Euler-Fermat theorem holds for the Eisenstein integers.

On power ideals of transversal matroids and their "parking functions"
Published • View PublicationBIB
To a vector configuration one can associate a polynomial ideal generated by powers of linear forms, known as a power ideal, which exhibits many combinatorial features of the matroid underlying the configuration. In this note we observe that certain power ideals associated to transversal matroids are, somewhat unexpectedly, monomial. Moreover, the (monomial) basis elements of the quotient ring defined by such a power ideal can be naturally identified with the lattice points of a remarkable convex polytope: a polymatroid, also known as generalized permutohedron. We dub the exponent vectors of these monomial basis elements "parking functions" of the corresponding transversal matroid. We highlight the connection between our investigation and Stanley-Reisner theory, and relate our findings to Stanley's conjectured necessary condition on matroid $h$-vectors.

On the Erdős-Burgess constant of the multiplicative semigroup of a factor ring of $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a commutative semigroup endowed with a binary associative operation $+$. An element $e$ of $\mathcal{S}$ is said to be idempotent if $e+e=e$. The {\sl Erdős-Burgess constant} of $\mathcal{S}$ is defined as the smallest $\ell\in \mathbb{N}\cup \{\infty\}$ such that any sequence $T$ of terms from $S$ and of length $\ell$ contains a nonempty subsequence the sum of whose terms is idempotent. Let $q$ be a prime power, and let $\F_q[x]$ be the polynomial ring over the finite field $\F_q$. Let $R=\F_q[x]\diagup K$ be a quotient ring of $\F_q[x]$ modulo any ideal $K$. We gave a sharp lower bound of the Erdős-Burgess constant of the multiplicative semigroup of the ring $R$, in particular, we determined the Erdős-Burgess constant in the case when $K$ is the power of a prime ideal or a product of pairwise distinct prime ideals in $\F_q[x]$.

Hall-Littlewood polynomials and a Hecke action on ordered set partitions
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 147(5) (2019) pp. 1839-1850 • View PublicationBIB
We construct an action of the Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$ on a quotient of the polynomial ring $F[x_1, \dots, x_n]$, where $F = \mathbb{Q}(q)$. The dimension of our quotient ring is the number of $k$-block ordered set partitions of $\{1, 2, \dots, n \}$. This gives a quantum analog of a construction of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono and interpolates between their result at $q = 1$ and work of Huang-Rhoades at $q = 0$.
Splines over integer quotient rings
Given a graph with edges labeled by elements in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$, a generalized spline is a labeling of each vertex by an integer $\mod m$ such that the labels of adjacent vertices agree modulo the label associated to the edge connecting them. These generalize the classical splines that arise in analysis as well as in a construction of equivariant cohomology often referred to as GKM-theory. We give an algorithm to produce minimum generating sets for the $\mathbb{Z}$-module of splines on connected graphs over $\mathbb{Z}/m \mathbb{Z}$. As an application, we give a quick heuristic to determine the minimum number of generators of the module of splines over $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. We also completely determine the ring of splines over $\mathbb{Z}/p^k\mathbb{Z}$ by providing explicit multiplication tables with respect to the elements of our minimum generating set. Our final result extends some of these results to splines over $\mathbb{Z}$.

A problem of Wang on Davenport constant for the multiplicative semigroup of the quotient ring of $\F_2[x]$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\F_q[x]$ be the ring of polynomials over the finite field $\F_q$, and let $f$ be a polynomial of $\F_q[x]$. Let $R=\frac{\F_q[x]}{(f)}$ be a quotient ring of $\F_q[x]$ with $0\neq R\neq \F_q[x]$. Let $\mathcal{S}_R$ be the multiplicative semigroup of the ring $R$, and let ${\rm U}(\mathcal{S}_R)$ be the group of units of $\mathcal{S}_R$. The Davenport constant ${\rm D}(\mathcal{S}_R)$ of the multiplicative semigroup $\mathcal{S}_R$ is the least positive integer $\ell$ such that for any $\ell$ polynomials $g_1,g_2,\ldots,g_{\ell}\in \F_q[x]$, there exists a subset $I\subsetneq [1,\ell]$ with $$\prod\limits_{i\in I} g_i \equiv \prod\limits_{i=1}^{\ell} g_i\pmod f.$$ In this manuscript, we proved that for the case of $q=2$, $${\rm D}({\rm U}(\mathcal{S}_R))\leq {\rm D}(\mathcal{S}_R)\leq {\rm D}({\rm U}(\mathcal{S}_R))+δ_f,$$ where \begin{displaymath} δ_f=\left\{\begin{array}{ll} 0 & \textrm{if $\gcd(x*(x+1_{\mathbb{F}_2}),\ f)=1_{\F_{2}}$}\\ 1 & \textrm{if $\gcd(x*(x+1_{\mathbb{F}_2}),\ f)\in \{x, \ x+1_{\mathbb{F}_2}\}$}\\ 2 & \textrm{if $gcd(x*(x+1_{\mathbb{F}_2}),f)=x*(x+1_{\mathbb{F}_2}) $}\\ \end{array} \right. \end{displaymath} which partially answered an open problem of Wang on Davenport constant for the multiplicative semigroup of $\frac{\F_q[x]}{(f)}$ (G.Q. Wang, \emph{Davenport constant for semigroups II,} Journal of Number Theory, 155 (2015) 124--134).

Combinatorial description of the cohomology of the affine flag variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct the affine version of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra, called the affine FK algebra, to investigate the combinatorics of affine Schubert calculus for type $A$. We introduce Murnaghan-Nakayama elements and Dunkl elements in the affine FK algebra. We show that they are commutative as Bruhat operators, and the commutative algebra generated by these operators is isomorphic to the cohomology of the affine flag variety. We show that the cohomology of the affine flag variety is product of the cohomology of an affine Grassmannian and a flag variety, which are generated by MN elements and Dunkl elements respectively. The Schubert classes in cohomology of the affine Grassmannian (resp. the flag variety) can be identified with affine Schur functions (resp. Schubert polynomials) in a quotient of the polynomial ring. Affine Schubert polynomials, polynomial representatives of the Schubert class in the cohomology of the affine flag variety, can be defined in the product of two quotient rings using the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand operators interpreted as divided difference operators acting on the affine Fomin-Kirillov algebra. As for other applications, we obtain Murnaghan-Nakayama rules both for the affine Schubert polynomials and affine Stanley symmetric functions. We also define $k$-strong-ribbon tableaux from Murnaghan-Nakayama elements to provide a new formula of $k$-Schur functions. This formula gives the character table of the representation of the symmetric group whose Frobenius characteristic image is the $k$-Schur function.

Davenport constant for semigroups II

Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite commutative semigroup. The Davenport constant of $\mathcal{S}$, denoted ${\rm D}(\mathcal{S})$, is defined to be the least positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $T$ of elements in $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $\ell$ contains a proper subsequence $T'$ ($T'\neq T$) with the sum of all terms from $T'$ equaling the sum of all terms from $T$. Let $q>2$ be a prime power, and let $\F_q[x]$ be the ring of polynomials over the finite field $\F_q$. Let $R$ be a quotient ring of $\F_q[x]$ with $0\neq R\neq \F_q[x]$. We prove that $${\rm D}(\mathcal{S}_R)={\rm D}(U(\mathcal{S}_R)),$$ where $\mathcal{S}_R$ denotes the multiplicative semigroup of the ring $R$, and $U(\mathcal{S}_R)$ denotes the group of units in $\mathcal{S}_R$.

Davenport constant of the multiplicative semigroup of the quotient ring $\frac{\F_p[x]}{\langle f(x)\rangle}$

Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite commutative semigroup. The Davenport constant of $\mathcal{S}$, denoted $D(\mathcal{S})$, is defined to be the least positive integer $d$ such that every sequence $T$ of elements in $\mathcal{S}$ of length at least $d$ contains a subsequence $T'$ with the sum of all terms from $T'$ equaling the sum of all terms from $T$. Let $\F_p[x]$ be a polynomial ring in one variable over the prime field $\F_p$, and let $f(x)\in \F_p[x]$. In this paper, we made a study of the Davenport constant of the multiplicative semigroup of the quotient ring $\frac{\F_p[x]}{\langle f(x)\rangle}$. Among other results, we mainly prove that, for any prime $p>2$ and any polynomial $f(x)\in \F_p[x]$ which can be factorized into several pairwise non-associted irreducible polynomials in $\F_p[x]$, then $$D(\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p)=D(U(\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p)),$$ where $\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p$ denotes the multiplicative semigroup of the quotient ring $\frac{\F_p[x]}{\langle f(x)\rangle}$ and $U(\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p)$ denotes the group of units of the semigroup $\mathcal{S}_{f(x)}^p$.

On decomposing Betti tables and $O$-sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Boij-Söderberg characterization decomposes a Betti table into a unique positive integral linear combination of pure diagrams. Given a module with a pure resolution, we describe explicit formulae for computing the decomposition of the Betti table of the module given the decomposition of the truncation of the Betti table, and vice versa. Nagel and Sturgeon described the decomposition of Betti tables of ideals with $d$-linear resolutions; indeed, the coefficients are precisely finite $O$-sequences. Using the extension formulae, we provide an explicit description of the coefficients of the decomposition of the Betti table of the quotient ring of such an ideal. Following from this, we describe the closed convex simplicial cone of $O$-sequences.

On a class of power ideals
Published in Journal of Pure and Applied Algebra 219(8):3158-3180, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the class of power ideals generated by the $k^n$ forms $(x_0+ξ^{g_1}x_1+\ldots+ξ^{g_n}x_n)^{(k-1)d}$ where $ξ$ is a fixed primitive $k^{th}$-root of unity and $0\leq g_j\leq k-1$ for all $j$. For $k=2$, by using a $\mathbb{Z}_k^{n+1}$-grading on $\mathbb{C}[x_0,\ldots,x_n]$, we compute the Hilbert series of the associated quotient rings via a simple numerical algorithm. We also conjecture the extension for $k>2$. Via Macaulay duality, those power ideals are related to schemes of fat points with support on the $k^n$ points $[1:ξ^{g_1}:\ldots:ξ^{g_n}]$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We compute Hilbert series, Betti numbers and Gröbner basis for such $0$-dimensional schemes. This explicitly determines the Hilbert series of the power ideal for all $k$: that this agrees with our conjecture for $k>2$ is supported by several computer experiments.
Faithful representations of Chevalley groups over quotient rings of non-Archimedean local fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field with the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}$ and the prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ and let $G={\bf G}\left(\mathcal{O}/\mathfrak{p}^n\right)$ be the adjoint Chevalley group. Let $m_f(G)$ denote the smallest possible dimension of a faithful representation of $G$. Using the Stone-von Neumann theorem, we determine a lower bound for $m_f(G)$ which is asymptotically the same as the results of Landazuri, Seitz and Zalesskii for split Chevalley groups over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our result yields a conceptual explanation of the exponents that appear in the aforementioned results

Hilbert functions of colored quotient rings and a generalization of the Clements-Lindström theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a polynomial ring $S = \Bbbk[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ over a field $\Bbbk$, and a monomial ideal $M$ of $S$, we say the quotient ring $R = S/M$ is Macaulay-Lex if for every graded ideal of $R$, there exists a lexicographic ideal of $R$ with the same Hilbert function. In this paper, we introduce a class of quotient rings with combinatorial significance, which we call colored quotient rings. This class of rings include Clements-Lindström rings and colored squarefree rings as special cases that are known to be Macaulay-Lex. We construct two new classes of Macaulay-Lex rings, characterize all colored quotient rings that are Macaulay-Lex, and give a simultaneous generalization of both the Clements-Lindström theorem and the Frankl-Füredi-Kalai theorem. We also show that the $f$-vectors of $(a_1, \dots, a_n)$-colored simplicial complexes or multicomplexes are never characterized by "reverse-lexicographic" complexes or multicomplexes when $n>1$ and $(a_1, \dots, a_n) \neq (1, \dots, 1)$.

Weakly closed graphs and F-purity of binomial edge ideals

Herzog-Hibi-Hreindóttir-Kahle-Rauh introduced the class of closed graph and they proved that the binomial edge ideal $J(G)$ of a graph $G$ has quadratic Gröbner bases if $G$ is closed. In this paper, we introduce the class of weakly closed graph as a generalization of the closed graph and prove that the quotient ring $S/J(G)$ is $F$-pure if $G$ is weakly closed. This fact is a generalization of Ohtani's theorem.

Frobenius circulant graphs of valency six, Eisenstein-Jacobi networks, and hexagonal meshes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Frobenius group is a transitive but not regular permutation group such that only the identity element can fix two points. A finite Frobenius group can be expressed as $G = K \rtimes H$ with $K$ a nilpotent normal subgroup. A first-kind $G$-Frobenius graph is a Cayley graph on $K$ with connection set $S$ an $H$-orbit on $K$ generating $K$, where $H$ is of even order or $S$ consists of involutions. We classify all 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulant graphs such that the underlying kernel $K$ is cyclic. We give optimal gossiping and routing algorithms for such a circulant and compute its forwarding indices, Wiener indices and minimum gossip time. We also prove that its broadcasting time is equal to its diameter plus two or three. We prove that all 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulants with cyclic kernels are Eisenstein-Jacobi graphs, the latter being Cayley graphs on quotient rings of the ring of Eisenstein-Jacobi integers. We also prove that larger Eisenstein-Jacobi graphs can be constructed from smaller ones as topological covers, and a similar result holds for 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulants. As a corollary any Eisenstein-Jacobi graph with order congruent to 1 modulo 6 and underlying Eisenstein-Jacobi integer not an associate of a real integer, is a cover of a 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulant. A distributed real-time computing architecture known as HARTS or hexagonal mesh is a special 6-valent first-kind Frobenius circulant.

Combinatorial Interpretations of some Boij-Söderberg Decompositions

Boij-Söderberg theory shows that the Betti table of a graded module can be written as a liner combination of pure diagrams with integer coefficients. Using Ferrers hypergraphs and simplicial polytopes, we provide interpretations of these coefficients for ideals with a d-linear resolution, their quotient rings, and for Gorenstein rings whose resolution has essentially at most two linear strands. We also establish a structural result on the decomposition in the case of quasi-Gorenstein modules.

Sequentially Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs: vertex decomposability and regularity

Let G be a bipartite graph with edge ideal I(G) whose quotient ring R/I(G) is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. We prove: (1) the independence complex of G must be vertex decomposable, and (2) the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of R/I(G) can be determined from the invariants of G.
