Rigged configurations are combinatorial objects prominent in the study of solvable lattice models. Marginally large tableaux are semi-standard Young tableaux of special form that give a realization of the crystals ${\cal B}(\infty)$. We introduce cascading sequences to characterize marginally large tableaux. Then we use cascading sequences and a non-explicit crystal isomorphism between marginally large tableaux and rigged configurations to give a characterization of the latter set, and to give an explicit bijection between the two sets.

Brualdi and Ma found a connection between involutions of length $n$ with $k$ descents and symmetric $k\times k$ matrices with non-negative integer entries summing to $n$ and having no row or column of zeros. From their main theorem they derived two alternating sums by algebraic means and asked for combinatorial proofs. In this note we provide such demonstrations making use of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence between symmetric matrices and semi-standard Young Tableau. Additionally, we restate the proof of Brualdi and Ma's main result with this perspective which shortens the argument.
Homomesy in products of two chains

Many invertible actions $τ$ on a set ${\mathcal{S}}$ of combinatorial objects, along with a natural statistic $f$ on ${\mathcal{S}}$, exhibit the following property which we dub \textbf{homomesy}: the average of $f$ over each $τ$-orbit in ${\mathcal{S}}$ is the same as the average of $f$ over the whole set ${\mathcal{S}}$. This phenomenon was first noticed by Panyushev in 2007 in the context of the rowmotion action on the set of antichains of a root poset; Armstrong, Stump, and Thomas proved Panyushev's conjecture in 2011. We describe a theoretical framework for results of this kind that applies more broadly, giving examples in a variety of contexts. These include linear actions on vector spaces, sandpile dynamics, Suter's action on certain subposets of Young's Lattice, Lyness 5-cycles, promotion of rectangular semi-standard Young tableaux, and the rowmotion and promotion actions on certain posets. We give a detailed description of the latter situation for products of two chains.

We prove a restriction of an analogue of the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence for semi-skyline augmented fillings, due to Mason, to multisets of cells of a staircase possibly truncated by a smaller staircase at the upper left end corner, or at the bottom right end corner.
The restriction to be imposed on the pairs of semi-skyline augmented fillings is that the pair of shapes, rearrangements of each other, satisfies an inequality in the Bruhat order, w.r.t. the symmetric group, where one shape is bounded by the reverse of the other. For semi-standard Young tableaux the inequality means that the pair of their right keys is such that one key is bounded by the Schützenberger evacuation of the other. This bijection is then used to obtain %recover an expansion formula of the non-symmetric Cauchy kernel, over staircases or truncated staircases, in the basis of Demazure characters of type $A$, and the basis of Demazure atoms. The expansion implies Lascoux expansion formula, when specialised to staircases or truncated staircases, and make explicit, in the latter, the Young tableaux in the Demazure crystal by interpreting Demazure operators via elementary bubble sorting operators acting on weak compositions.

We show that sequences of skew Schur polynomials obtained from stretched semi-standard Young tableaux satisfy a linear recurrence, which we give explicitly. Using this, we apply this to finding certain asymptotic behavior of these Schur polynomials and present conjectures on minimal recurrences for stretched Schur polynomials.
The Boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin Graph: New Proof of Borodin-Olshanski's Formula, and its q-analogue

In the recent paper [arXiv:1109.1412], Borodin and Olshanski have presented a novel proof of the celebrated Edrei-Voiculescu theorem which describes the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. This graph encodes branching of irreducible characters of finite-dimensional unitary groups. Points of the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph can be identified with finite indecomposable (= extreme) characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. An equivalent description identifies the boundary with the set of doubly infinite totally nonnegative sequences.
A principal ingredient of Borodin-Olshanski's proof is a new explicit determinantal formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). We present a simpler and more direct derivation of that formula using the Cauchy-Binet summation involving the inverse Vandermonde matrix. We also obtain a q-generalization of that formula, namely, a new explicit determinantal formula for arbitrary q-specializations of skew Schur polynomials. Its particular case is related to the q-Gelfand-Tsetlin graph and q-Toeplitz matrices introduced and studied by Gorin [arXiv:1011.1769].
The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph: A new approach

The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space.
The paper contains a novel approach to the Edrei-Voiculescu theorem. It is based on a new explicit formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). The formula is obtained via the theory of symmetric functions, and new Schur-like symmetric functions play a key role in the derivation.

The diamond cone is a combinatorial description for a basis in a indecomposable module for the nilpotent factor n+ of a semi simple Lie algebra. After N.J. Wildberger who introduced this notion for sl(3), this description was achevied by N. Bel Baraka, N.J. Wildberger and D. A. for sl(n) and by B. Agrebaoui and ourselves for the rank 2 semi-simple Lie algebras. In the present work, we generalize these constructions to the Lie algebras sp(2n). The symplectic semi-standard Young tableaux were defined by C. de Concini, they form a basis for the shape algebra of sp(2n). We introduce here the notion of symplectic quasi-standard Young tableaux, these tableaux describe the diamond cone for sp(2n).

The second author has introduced non-crossing tableaux, objects whose non-nesting analogues are semi-standard Young tableaux. We relate non-crossing tableaux to Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and develop the non-crossing analogue of standard monomial theory. Leclerc and Zelevinsky's weakly separated sets are special cases of non-crossing tableaux, and we suggest that non-crossing tableaux may help illuminate the theory of weakly separated sets.
A combinatorial realization of Schur-Weyl duality via crystal graphs and dual equivalence graphs

For any polynomial representation of the special linear group, the nodes of the corresponding crystal may be indexed by semi-standard Young tableaux. Under certain conditions, the standard Young tableaux occur, and do so with weight 0. Standard Young tableaux also parametrize the vertices of dual equivalence graphs. Motivated by the underlying representation theory, in this paper, we explainthis connection by giving a combinatorial manifestation of Schur-Weyl duality. In particular, we put a dual equivalence graph structure on the 0-weight space of certain crystal graphs, producing edges combinatorially from the crystal edges. The construction can be expressed in terms of the local characterizations given by Stembridge for crystal graphs and the author for dual equivalence graphs.

Demazure characters of type A, which are equivalent to key polynomials, have been decomposed by Lascoux and Schützenberger into standard bases. We prove that the resulting polynomials, which we call Demazure atoms, can be obtained from a certain specialization of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials. This combinatorial interpretation for Demazure atoms accelerates the computation of the right key associated to a semi-standard Young tableau. Utilizing a related construction, we provide a new combinatorial description for the key polynomials.

Consider the single server queue with an infinite buffer and a FIFO discipline, either of type M/M/1 or Geom/Geom/1. Denote by A the arrival process and by s the services. Assume the stability condition to be satisfied. Denote by D the departure process in equilibrium and by r the time spent by the customers at the very back of the queue. We prove that (D,r) has the same law as (A,s) which is an extension of the classical Burke Theorem. In fact, r can be viewed as the departures from a dual storage model. This duality between the two models also appears when studying the transient behavior of a tandem by means of the RSK algorithm: the first and last row of the resulting semi-standard Young tableau are respectively the last instant of departure in the queue and the total number of departures in the store.

Young's lattice, the lattice of all Young diagrams, has the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, the correspondence between certain matrices and pairs of semi-standard Young tableaux with the same shape. Fomin introduced generalized Schur operators to generalize the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. In this sense, generalized Schur operators are generalizations of semi-standard Young tableaux. We define a generalization of Schur polynomials as expansion coefficients of generalized Schur operators. We show that the commutating relation of generalized Schur operators implies Pieri's formula to generalized Schur polynomials.

We exhibit a weight-preserving bijection between semi-standard Young tableaux and semi-skyline augmented fillings to provide a combinatorial proof that the Schur functions decompose into nonsymmetric functions indexed by compositions. The insertion procedure involved in the proof leads to an analogue of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Algorithm for semi-skyline augmented fillings. This procedure commutes with the RSK algorithm, and therefore retains many of its properties.
q-Narayana numbers and the flag h-vector of $J({\bf 2} \times {\bf n})$

The Narayana numbers are $N(n,k) = {1 \over n}{n \choose k}{n \choose {k+1}}$. There are several natural statistics on Dyck paths with a distribution given by N(n,k). We show the equidistribution of Narayana statistics by computing the flag h-vector of $J({\bf 2} \times {\bf n})$ in different ways. In the process we discover new Narayana statistics and provide co-statistics for which the Narayana statistics in question have a distribution given by Fürlinger and Hofbauers q-Narayana numbers. We also interpret the h-vector in terms of semi-standard Young tableaux, which enables us to express the q-Narayana numbers in terms of Schur functions.
