We introduce a new definition for the species of type B, or H-species, analog to the classical species (of type A), but on which we consider the action of the groups Bn of signed permutations. We are interested in algebraic structure on these H-species and give examples of Hopf monoids. The natural way to get a graded vector space from a species, given in this paper in terms of functors, will allow us to deepen our understanding of these species. In particular, the image of the classical species of set compositions under a given functor is isomorphic to the combinatorial Hopf algebra DQSym.

In this paper, we extend the notion of labeled partitions with ordinary permutations to colored permutations in the sense that the colors are endowed with a cyclic structure. We use labeled partitions with colored permutations to derive the generating function of the $\mathrm{fmaj}_k$ indices of colored permutations. The second result is a combinatorial treatment of a relation on the q-derangement numbers with respect to colored permutations which leads to the formula of Chow for signed permutations and the formula of Faliharimalala and Zeng [10] on colored permutations. The third result is an involution on permutations that implies the generating function formula for the signed q-counting of the major indices due to Gessel and Simon. This involution can be extended to signed permutations. In this way, we obtain a combinatorial interpretation of a formula of Adin, Gessel and Roichman.

In this paper, we construct bijections between Dyck paths, noncrossing partitions, and 231-avoiding permutations, which send the area statistic on Dyck paths to the inversion number on noncrossing partitions and on 231-avoiding permutations. This bijection has the additional property that it simultaneously sends the major index on Dyck paths to the sum of the major index and the inverse major index on noncrossing partitions and on 231-avoiding permutations, respectively. Moreover, we provide generalizations of these constructions to the group of signed permutations.
Plactic relations for $r$-domino tableaux
The work of C. Bonnaf{é}, M. Geck, L. Iancu and T. Lam \cite{Geck-Lam} shows through two conjectures that $r$-domino tableaux have an important role in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory of type $B$ with unequal parameters. In this paper we provide plactic relations on signed permutations which determine whether given two signed permutations have the same insertion $r$-domino tableaux in Garfinkle's algorithm \cite{Garfinkle1}.

We show that the principal order ideal below an element w in the Bruhat order on involutions in a symmetric group is a Boolean lattice if and only if w avoids the patterns 4321, 45312 and 456123. Similar criteria for signed permutations are also stated. Involutions with this property are enumerated with respect to natural statistics. In this context, a bijective correspondence with certain Motzkin paths is demonstrated.

By introducing the notion of relative derangements of type $B$, also called signed relative derangements, which are defined in terms of signed permutations, we obtain a type $B$ analogue of the well-known relation between relative derangements and the classical derangements. While this fact can be proved by using the principle of inclusion and exclusion, we present a combinatorial interpretation with the aid of the intermediate structure of signed skew derangements.

We complete the Wilf classification of signed patterns of length 5 for both signed permutations and signed involutions. New general equivalences of patterns are given which prove Jaggard's conjectures concerning involutions in the symmetric group avoiding certain patterns of length 5 and 6. In this way, we also complete the Wilf classification of S_5, S_6, and S_7 for both permutations and involutions.

The notion of an Abstract Young (briefly: AY) representation is a natural generalization of the classical Young orthogonal form. The AY representations of the symmetric group are characterized by Adin, Brenti and Roichman in [U2]. In this paper we present several types of minimal AY representation of $D_n$ associated with standard D-Young tableaux which are a natural generalization of usual standard Young tableaux. We give an explicit combinatorial view (the representation space is spanned by certain standard tableaux while the action is a generalized Young orthogonal form) of representations which are induced into $D_n$ from minimal AY representations of one of the natural embeddings of $S_n$ into $D_n$. Then we show that these induced representations are isomorphic to the direct sum of two or three minimal AY representations of $D_n$ also associated with standard D-Young tableaux. It is done by constructing a continuous path between representation matrices where one end of the path is the mentioned direct sum; another end is the classical form of induced representation. In the last section we briefly explain how the similar results may be obtained for the group $B_n$ instead of $D_n$.
Maximal Degree in the Strong Bruhat Order of Bn
Given a permutation P in Sn, let G(P) be the graph on n vertices {1,...,n}, where two vertices i<j are adjacent if i appears right of j in P and there are no integers k with i<k<j and k appearing between i and j in P. Let G'(P) be the graph obtained by dropping the condition that i appears right of j, i.e. two vertices are adjacent if the rectangle [i,P(i)] x [j,P(j)] is empty. In the study of the strong order on permutation, Adin and Roichman introduced these graphs and computed their maximum number of edges. We generalize these results to the Weyl group of signed permutations Bn, working with graphs on vertices {-n,...,n}\{0}, using new variants of a classical theorem of Turan.

To each permutation $σ$ in $S_{n}$ we associate a triangulation of a fixed $(n+2)$-gon. We then determine the fibers of this association and show that they coincide with the sylvester classes depicted By Novelli, Hivert and Thibon. A signed version of this construction allows us to reformulate the four color theorem in terms of the existence of a signable path between any two permutations in the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_{n}.

We give some new Wilf equivalences for signed patterns which allow the complete classification of signed patterns of lengths three and four. The problem is considered for pattern avoidance by general as well as involutive signed permutations.
Conway's napkin problem

The napkin problem was first posed by John H. Conway, and written up as a `toughie' in "Mathematical Puzzles: A Connoisseur's Collection," by Peter Winkler. To paraphrase Winkler's book, there is a banquet dinner to be served at a mathematics conference. At a particular table, $n$ men are to be seated around a circular table. There are $n$ napkins, exactly one between each of the place settings. Being doubly cursed as both men and mathematicians, they are all assumed to be ignorant of table etiquette. The men come to sit at the table one at a time and in random order. When a guest sits down, he will prefer the left napkin with probability $p$ and the right napkin with probability $q=1-p$. If there are napkins on both sides of the place setting, he will choose the napkin he prefers. If he finds only one napkin available, he will take that napkin (though it may not be the napkin he wants). The third possibility is that no napkin is available, and the unfortunate guest is faced with the prospect of going through dinner without any napkin!
We think of the question of how many people don't get napkins as a statistic for signed permutations, where the permutation gives the order in which people sit and the sign tells us whether they initially reach left or right. We also keep track of the number of guests who get a napkin, but not the napkin they prefer. We build a generating function for the joint distribution of these statistics, and use it to answer questions like: What is the probability that every guest receives a napkin? How many guests do we expect to be without a napkin? How many guests are happy with the napkin they receive?

In this paper we look at polynomials arising from statistics on the classes of involutions, $I_n$, and involutions with no fixed points, $J_n$, in the symmetric group. Our results are motivated by F. Brenti's conjecture which states that the Eulerian distribution of $I_n$ is log-concave. Symmetry of the generating functions is shown for the statistics $des, maj$ and the joint distribution $(des, maj)$. We show that $exc$ is log-concave on $I_n$, $inv$ is log-concave on $J_n$ and $des$ is partially unimodal on both $I_n$ and $J_n$. We also give recurrences and explicit forms for the generating functions of the inversions statistic on involutions in Coxeter groups of types $B_n$ and $D_n$. Symmetry and unimodality of $inv$ is shown on the subclass of signed permutations in $D_n$ with no fixed points. In light of these new results, we present further conjectures at the end of the paper.

We show the existence of a unital subalgebra of the symmetric group algebra linearly spanned by sums of permutations with a common peak set, which we call the peak algebra. We show that this algebra is the image of the descent algebra of type B under the map to the descent algebra of type A which forgets the signs, and also the image of the descent algebra of type D. The peak algebra contains a two sided ideal which is defined in terms of interior peaks. This object was introduced in previous work by Nyman; we find that it is the image of certain ideals of the descent algebras of types B and D introduced in previous work of N. Bergeron et al. We derive an exact sequence involving the peak ideal and the peak algebras of degrees $n$ and $n-2$. We obtain this and many other properties of the peak algebra and its peak ideal by first establishing analogous results for signed permutations and then forgetting the signs. In particular, we construct two new commutative semisimple subalgebras of the descent algebra by grouping permutations according to their number of peaks or interior peaks. We discuss the Hopf algebraic structures that exist on the direct sums of these spaces over $n\geq 0$ and explain the connection with previous work of Stembridge; we also obtain new properties of his descents-to-peaks map and construct a type B analog.
Avoiding 2-letter signed patterns
Let B_n be the hyperoctahedral group; that is, the set of all signed permutations on n letters, and let B_n(T) be the set of all signed permutations in B_n which avoids a set T of signed patterns. In this paper, we find all the cardinalities of the sets B_n(T) where $T \subseteq B_2$. This allow us to express these cardinalities via inverse of binomial coefficients, binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and Fibonacci numbers.
Restricted single or double signed patterns
Let $E_n^r=\{[τ]_a=(τ_1^{(a_1)},...,τ_n^{(a_n)})| τ\in S_n,\ 1\leq a_i\leq r\}$ be the set of all signed permutations on the symbols 1,2,...,n with signs 1,2,...,r. We prove, for every 2-letter signed pattern $[τ]_a$, that the number of $[τ]_a$-avoiding signed permutations in $E_n^r$ is given by the formula $\sum\limits_{j=0}^n j!(r-1)^j{n\choose j}^2$. Also we prove that there are only one Wilf class for r=1, four Wilf classes for r=2, and six Wilf classes for $r\geq 3$.
Symmetrized random permutations

Selecting N random points in a unit square corresponds to selecting a random permutation. By putting 5 types of symmetry restrictions on the points, we obtain subsets of permutations : involutions, signed permutations and signed involutions. We are interested in the statistics of the length of the longest up/right path of random points selections in each symmetry type as the number of points increases to infinity. The limiting distribution functions are expressed in terms of Painlevé II equation. Some of them are Tracy-Widom distributions in random matrix theory, while there are two new classes of distribution functions interpolating GOE and GSE, and GUE and GOE^2 Tracy-Widom distribution functions. Also some applications and related topics are discussed.

We compute the limit distribution for (centered and scaled) length of the longest increasing subsequence of random colored permutations. The limit distribution function is a power of that for usual random permutations computed recently by Baik, Deift, and Johansson (math.CO/9810105). In two--colored case our method provides a different proof of a similar result by Tracy and Widom about longest increasing subsequences of signed permutations (math.CO/9811154).
Our main idea is to reduce the `colored' problem to the case of usual random permutations using certain combinatorial results and elementary probabilistic arguments.
