An improved hypergraph Mantel's Theorem
In a recent paper, Chao and Yu used an entropy method to show that the Turán density of a certain family $\mathcal{F}$ of $\lfloor r/2\rfloor$ triangle-like $r$-uniform hypergraphs is $r!/r^r$. Later, Liu determined for large $n$ the exact Turán number $\text{ex}(n,\mathcal{F})$ of this family, and showed that the unique extremal graph is the balanced complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph. These two results together can be viewed as a hypergraph version of Mantel's Theorem. In this paper, building on their methods, we improve both of these results by showing that they still hold with a subfamily $\mathcal{F}'\subset\mathcal{F}$ of size $\lceil r/e\rceil$ in place of $\mathcal{F}$.
Dense $2$-connected planar graphs and the planar Turán number of $2C_k$
Shi, Walsh and Yu demonstrated that any dense planar graph with certain property (known as circuit graph) contains a large near-triangulation. We extend the result to $2$-connected plane graphs, thereby addressing a question posed by them. Using the result, we prove that the planar Tuán number of $2C_k$ is $\left[3-Θ(k^{\log_23})^{-1}\right]n$ when $k\geq 5$.
On generalized Tur{á}n problems with bounded matching number and circumference
Let \( \mathcal{F} \) be a family of graphs. The generalized Turán number \( \operatorname{ex}(n, K_r, \mathcal{F}) \) is the maximum number of $K_r$ in an \( n \)-vertex graph that does not contain any member of \( \mathcal{F} \) as a subgraph. Recently, Alon and Frankl initiated the study of Turán problems with bounded matching number. In this paper, we determine the generalized Turán number of \( C_{\geq k} \) with bounded matching number.
Turán problems for suspension of a balanced tree
The Turán number $\ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges that an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph can have. The suspension $\widehat{H}$ is obtained from $H$ by adding a new vertex which is adjacent to all vertices of $H$ and a tree is balanced if the sizes of its two color classes differ at most $1$. In this paper, we obtain a sharp bound of $\ex(n,\widehat{T})$ when $n\ge 4(4k)^6$ based on the Erdős-Sós conjecture. We also show the bound is sharp for infinitely many $n$ and characterize all extremal graphs. In particular, if $T$ satisfies some conditions such as $T$ contains a matching covering all vertices in one color class, then the bound is sharp for all $n$. This is a new class of graphs whose decomposition family does not contain a linear forest but we still can determine its Turán number.
The planar Turan number of double star S_(3,5)
Given a graph H and a positive integer n, the planar Turan number of H, denoted by exp(n, H), is the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex H-free planar graph.D.Ghosh, et al.initiated the topic of double stars S_(k,l). Recently Xu et al.[AIMS Mathematics, 2025, 10(1): 1628-1644.] mentioned that exp(n, S_(3,5)) is still unknown. In this paper, we first establish that the planar Turan number S_(3,5) satisfies exp(n, S_(3,5)) <= 23n/8 - 9/2 for all n >= 2. The upper bound is tight for n = 12.
Rainbow Turán numbers for short brooms
A graph $G$ is rainbow-$F$-free if it admits a proper edge-coloring without a rainbow copy of $F$. The rainbow Turán number of $F$, denoted $\mathrm{ex^*}(n,F)$, is the maximum number of edges in a rainbow-$F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We determine bounds on the rainbow Turán numbers of stars with a single edge subdivided twice; we call such a tree with $t$ total edges a $t$-edge \textit{broom} with length-$3$ handle, denoted by $B_{t,3}$. We improve the best known upper bounds on $\mathrm{ex^*}(n,B_{t,3})$ in all cases where $t \neq 2^s - 2$. Moreover, in the case where $t$ is odd and in a few cases when $t \equiv 0 \mod 4$, we provide constructions asymptotically achieving these upper bounds. Our results also demonstrate a dependence of $\mathrm{ex^*}(n,B_{t,3})$ on divisibility properties of $t$.
On $\mathcal{F}$-multicolor Turán number of hypergraph graphs
The Ruzsa-Szemerédi $(6,3)$-problem can be equivalently stated as determining the maximum number of edge-disjoint triangles on $n$ vertices such that no triangle is formed by edges from three distinct triangle-copies. Gowers and Janzer extended this problem by establishing an analogous result for complete graphs. A natural generalization of the two results, first introduced by Imolay, Karl, Nazy and Váli, asks for the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a graph $F$ on $n$ vertices such that no copy of $G$ is formed by edges originating from distinct $F$-copies. This maximum number, denoted by $ex_F(n,G)$, is called the {\em $F$-multicolor Turán number} of $G$. This paper focuses on the setting of uniform hypergraphs. We first prove that for $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{G}$ and $\mathcal{F}$, $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})=o(n^k)$ if and only if there exists a homomorphism from $\mathcal{G}$ to $\mathcal{F}$. For degenerate case, we show that $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})=n^{k-o(1)}$ whenever $\mathcal{G}$ contains a $k$-uniform tight triangle. These results extend previous results. We further establish corresponding supersaturation and blowup statements. In the non-degenerate setting, we derive matching lower and upper bounds for $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$ to fail to attain the upper bound, under the assumption that the extremal graphs for $\mathcal{G}$ are stable. As an application, we refine a result due to Imolay, Karl, Nazy and Váli. Furthermore, we completely characterize $\mathcal{F}$ for which $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n,\mathcal{G})$ does not attain the upper bound when $\mathcal{G}$ is one of the three special intersecting graphs: Fano plane, extended triangle and $r$-book of $r$-edges with $r=3,4$.
Bipartite Turán number of trees
We start a systematic investigation concerning bipartite Turán number for trees. For a graph $F$ and integers $1 \leq a \leq b$ we define:
$(i)$\quad $ex_b(a, b, F)$ is the largest number of edges that an $F$-free bipartite graph can have with part sizes $a$ and $b$. We write $ex_b(n, F)$ for $ex_b(n, n, F)$.
$(ii)$\quad $ex_{b,c}(a, b, F)$ is the largest number of edges that an $F$-free connected, bipartite graph can have with part sizes $a$ and $b$. We write $ex_{b,c}(n, F)$ for $ex{b,c}(n, n, F)$.
Both definitions are similar for a family $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs.
We prove general lower bounds depending on the maximum degree of $F$, as well as on the cardinalities of the two vertex classes of $F$.
We derive upper and lower bounds for $ex_b(n,F)$ in terms of $ex(2n,F)$ and $ex(n, F)$, the corresponding classical (not bipartite) Turán numbers.
We solve both problems for various classes of graphs, including all trees up to six vertices for any $n$, for double stars $D_{s ,t}$ if $a \geq f(s,t )$, for some families of spiders, and more.
We use these results to supply an answer to a problem raised by L. T. Yuan and X. D. Zhang [{\it Graphs and Combinatorics}, 2017] concerning $ex_b( n, \mathcal{T}_{k,\ell} )$, where $\mathcal{T}_{k,\ell}$ is the family of all trees with vertex classes of respective cardinalities $k$ and $\ell$.
The asymptotic worst-case ratios between Turán-type functions are also inverstigated.
Turán densities for matroid basis hypergraphs
Let $U$ be a uniform matroid. For all positive integers $n$ and $r$ with $n \ge r$, what is the maximum number of bases of an $n$-element, rank-$r$ matroid without $U$ as a minor? We show that this question arises by restricting the problem of determining the Turán number of a daisy hypergraph to the family of matroid basis hypergraphs. We then answer this question for several interesting choices of $U$.
Young domination on Hamming rectangles
We introduce a family of domination-type problems in Cartesian products of two graphs. The framework captures several well-studied topics, including variants of bootstrap percolation, line growth, distance domination, and target set selection. We focus on Cartesian products of two complete graphs and formulate the notion of Young domination number in terms of a growth rule determined by a Young diagram; this number is the smallest cardinality of an initial set that covers the entire vertex set in a prescribed number $L$ of iterations of the rule.
We compute the Young domination number with $L=1$ for several natural cases, including $k$-domination for Cartesian products of two complete graphs of the same order, thereby proving a conjecture from 2009 due to Burchett, Lane, and Lachniet. We show that the case of $L=1$ of Young domination is equivalent to computing bipartite Turán numbers for families of double stars, yielding implications of our results in extremal graph theory. For arbitrary fixed $L$, we devise constant-factor approximation algorithms for the problem. Our approach is based on a variety of techniques, including duality between Young diagrams, algebraic formulations, explicit constructions, and dynamic programming.
Generalized Turán problems for a matching and long cycles
Let $\mathscr{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph $G$ is $\mathscr{F}$-free if $G$ does not contain any $F\in \mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. The general Turán number, denoted by $ex(n, H,\mathscr{F})$, is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $\mathscr{F}$-free graph. Then $ex(n, K_2,\mathscr{F})$, also denote by $ex(n, \mathscr{F})$, is the Turán number. Recently, Alon and Frankl determined the exact value of $ex(n, \{K_{k},M_{s+1}\})$, where $K_{k}$ and $M_{s+1}$ are a complete graph on $k $ vertices and a matching of size $s +1$, respectively. Then many results were obtained by extending $K_{k}$ to a general fixed graph or family of graphs. Let $C_k$ be a cycle of order $k$. Denote $C_{\ge k}=\{C_k,C_{k+1},\ldots\}$. In this paper, we determine the value of $ex(n,K_r, \{C_{\ge k},M_{s+1}\})$ for large enough $n$ and obtain the extremal graphs when $k$ is odd. Particularly, the exact value of $ex(n, \{C_{\ge k},M_{s+1}\})$ and the extremal graph are given for large enough $n$.
Planar Turán number of two adjacent cycles
The planar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. The planar Turán number of $k(k\geq 3)$ vertex-disjoint union of cycles is the trivial value $3n-6$. We determine the planar Turán number of $C_{3}\text{-}C_{3}$ and $C_{3}\text{-}C_{4}$, where $C_{k}\text{-}C_{\ell}$ denotes the graph consisting of two disjoint cycles $C_k$ with an edge connecting them.
Turán numbers of cycles plus a general graph
For a family of graphs $\cal F$, a graph $G$ is $\cal F$-free if it does not contain a member of $\cal F$ as a subgraph. The Turán number $\textrm{ex}(n,{\cal F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which is $\cal F$-free. Let ${\cal C}_{\geq k}$ be the set of cycles with length at least $k$. In this paper, we investigate the Turán number of $\{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, F\}$ for a general graph $F$. To be precise, we determine $\textrm{ex}(n, \{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, F\})$ apart from a constant additive term, where $F$ either is a 2-connected nonbipartite graph or is a 2-connected bipartite graph under some conditions. This is an extension of a previous result on the Turán number of $\{{\cal C}_{\geq k}, K_r\}$ by the first author, Ning, and the third author.

Given a set of graphs $\mathcal{H}$, we say that a graph $G$ is \textit{$\mathcal{H}$-free} if it does not contain any member of $\mathcal{H}$ as a subgraph. Let $\text{ex}(n,\mathcal{H})$ (resp. $\text{ex}_{sp}(n,\mathcal{H})$) denote the maximum size (resp. spectral radius) of an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free graph. Denote by $\text{Ex}(n, \mathcal{H})$ the set of all $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs with $\text{ex}(n, \mathcal{H})$ edges. Similarly, let $\mathrm{Ex}_{sp}(n,\mathcal{H})$ be the set of all $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs with spectral radius $\text{ex}_{sp}(n, \mathcal{H})$. For positive integers $a, b$ with $a\leqslant b$, an $[a,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $F$ of $G$ such that $a\leqslant d_F(v)\leqslant b$ for all $v\in V(G)$, where $d_F(v)$ denotes the degree of the vertex $v$ in $F.$ Let $\mathcal{F}_{a,b}$ be the set of all the $[a,b]$-factors of an $n$-vertex complete graph $K_n$. In this paper, we determine the Turán number $\text{ex}(n,\mathcal{F}_{a,b})$ and the spectral Turán number $\text{ex}_{sp}(n,\mathcal{F}_{a,b}),$ respectively. Furthermore, the bipartite analogue of $\text{ex}(n,\mathcal{F}_{a,b})$ (resp. $\text{ex}_{sp}(n,\mathcal{F}_{a,b})$) is also obtained. All the corresponding extremal graphs are identified. Consequently, one sees that $\mathrm{Ex}_{sp}(n,\mathcal{F}_{a,b})\subseteq \text{Ex}(n, \mathcal{F}_{a,b})$ holds for graphs and bipartite graphs. This partially answers an open problem proposed by Liu and Ning \cite{LN2023}. Our results may deduce a main result of Fan and Lin \cite{FL2022}.
Positive codegree Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós theorem for the generalized triangle
The celebrated Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós Theorem from 1974 shows that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with minimum degree greater than $2n/5$ must be bipartite.
We establish a positive codegree extension of this result for the $r$-uniform generalized triangle $\mathrm{T}_{r} = \left\{\{1,\ldots, r-1,r\}, \{1,\ldots, r-1,r+1\},\{r,r+1, \ldots, 2r-1\}\right\}$$\colon$ For every $n \ge (r-1)(2r+1)/2$, if $\mathcal{H}$ is an $n$-vertex $\mathrm{T}_{r}$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph in which each $(r-1)$-tuple of vertices is contained in either zero edges or more than $2n/(2r+1)$ edges of $\mathcal{H}$, then $\mathcal{H}$ is $r$-partite. This result provides the first tight positive codegree Andr{á}sfai--Erdős--Sós type theorem for hypergraphs. It also immediately implies that the positive codegree Turán number of $\mathrm{T}_{r}$ is $\lfloor n/r \rfloor$ for all $r$. Additionally, for $r=3$, our result answers one of the questions posed by Hou et al.~\cite{HLYZZ22} in a strong form.
Tight bounds for intersection-reverse sequences, edge-ordered graphs and applications
In 2006, Marcus and Tardos proved that if $A^1,\dots,A^n$ are cyclic orders on some subsets of a set of $n$ symbols such that the common elements of any two distinct orders $A^i$ and $A^j$ appear in reversed cyclic order in $A^i$ and $A^j$, then $\sum_{i} |A^i|=O(n^{3/2}\log n)$. This result is tight up to the logarithmic factor and has since become an important tool in Discrete Geometry. We improve this to the optimal bound $O(n^{3/2})$. In fact, we show that if $A^1,\dots,A^n$ are linear orders on some subsets of a set of $n$ symbols such that no three symbols appear in the same order in any two distinct linear orders, then $\sum_{i} |A^i|=O(n^{3/2})$. Using this result, we resolve several open problems in Discrete Geometry and Extremal Graph Theory as follows.
We prove that every $n$-vertex topological graph that does not contain a self-crossing four-cycle has $O(n^{3/2})$ edges. This resolves a problem of Marcus and Tardos from 2006. We also show that $n$ pseudo-circles in the plane can be cut into $O(n^{3/2})$ pseudo-segments, which, in turn, implies new bounds on point-circle incidences and on other geometric problems. Moreover, we prove that the edge-ordered Turán number of the four-cycle $C_4^{1243}$ is $Θ(n^{3/2})$. This answers a question of Gerbner, Methuku, Nagy, Pálvölgyi, Tardos and Vizer.
Using different methods, we determine the largest possible extremal number that an edge-ordered forest of order chromatic number two can have. Kucheriya and Tardos showed that every such graph has extremal number at most $n2^{O(\sqrt{\log n})}$, and conjectured that this can be improved to $n(\log n)^{O(1)}$. We disprove their conjecture by showing that for every $C>0$, there exists an edge-ordered tree of order chromatic number two whose extremal number is $Ω(n 2^{C\sqrt{\log n}})$.
On generalized Turán problems with bounded matching number
The generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n, H, \mathcal{F})$ is defined as the maximum number of copies of a graph $H$ in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain any graph $F \in \mathcal{F}$. Alon and Frankl initiated the study of Turán problems with a bounded matching number. In this paper, we establish stability results for generalized Turán problems with bounded matching number.Using the stability results, we provide exact values of $\ex(n,K_r,\{F,M_{s+1}\})$ for $F$ being any non-bipartite graph or a path on $k$ vertices.
The number of edges in graphs with bounded clique number and circumference
Let $\cal H$ be a family of graphs. The Turán number ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ is the maximum possible number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which does not contain any member of $\cal H$ as a subgraph. As a common generalization of Turán's theorem and Erdős-Gallai theorem on the Turán number of matchings, Alon and Frankl determined ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for ${\cal H}=\{K_r,M_k\}$, where $M_k$ is a matching of size $k$. Replacing $M_k$ by $P_k$, Katona and Xiao obtained the Turán number of ${\cal H}=\{K_r,P_k\}$ for $r \leq \lfloor k/2 \rfloor$ and sufficiently large $n$. In addition, they proposed a conjecture for the case of $r \geq \lfloor k/2 \rfloor+1$ and sufficiently large $n$. Motivated by the fact that the result for ${\rm ex}(n,P_k)$ can be deduced from the one for ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal C}_{\geq k})$, we investigate the Turán number of ${\cal H}=\{K_r, {\cal C}_{\geq k}\}$ in this paper. In other words, we aim to determine the maximum number of edges in graphs with clique number at most $r-1$ and circumference at most $k-1$. For ${\cal H}=\{K_r, {\cal C}_{\geq k}\}$, we are able to show the value of ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for $r \geq \lfloor (k-1)/2\rfloor+2$ and all $n$. As an application of this result, we confirm Katona and Xiao's conjecture in a stronger form. For $r \leq \lfloor (k-1)/2\rfloor+1$, we manage to show the value of ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for sufficiently large $n$.
Graphs with constant links and induced Turán numbers
A graph $G$ of constant link $L$ is a graph in which the neighborhood of any vertex induces a graph isomorphic to $L$. Given two different graphs, $H$ and $G$, the induced Turán number ${\rm ex}(n; H, G{\rm -ind})$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph having no subgraph isomorphic to $H$ and no copy from $G$ as an induced subgraph.
Our main motivation in this paper is to establish a bridge between graphs with constant link and induced Turán numbers via the class of $t$-regular, $k$-uniform (linear) hypergraphs of girth at least $4$, as well as to present several methods of constructing connected graphs with constant link.
We show that, for integers $t \geq 3$ and $k \geq 3$, ${\rm ex}(n; C_k, K_{1,t}{\rm -ind}) \leq (k - 2)(t - 1)n/2$ and that equality holds for infinitely many values of $n$. This result is built upon the existence of graphs with constant link $tL$ with restricted cycle length, which we prove in another theorem. More precisely, we show that, given a graph $F$ with constant link $L$ and circumference $c$, then, for all integers $t \geq 2$ and $g > c$, there exists a graph with constant link $tL$ which is free of cycles of length $l$, for all $c < l < g$. We provide two proofs of this result using distinct approaches. We further present constructions of graphs with constant links $tL$, $t \geq 2$, and restricted cycle length based on Steiner Systems. Finally, starting from a connected graph of constant link $tL$, for $t \geq 2$, having order $n$ and restricted cycle lengths, we provide a method to construct an infinite collection of connected graphs of constant link $tL$ that preserves the cycle length restriction, and whose orders form an arithmetic progression $qn$, $q \geq 1$.
Generalized Turán problem for a path and a clique
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a family of graphs. The generalized Turán number $ex(n, K_r, \mathcal{H})$ is the maximum number of copies of the clique $K_r$ in any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{H}$-free graph. In this paper, we determine the value of $ex(n, K_r, \{P_k, K_m \} )$ for sufficiently large $n$ with an exceptional case, and characterize all corresponding extremal graphs, which generalizes and strengthens the results of Katona and Xiao [EJC, 2024] on $ex(n, K_2, \{P_k, K_m \} )$. For the exceptional case, we obtain a tight upper bound for $ex(n, K_r, \{P_k, K_m \} )$ that confirms a conjecture on $ex(n, K_2, \{P_k, K_m \} )$ posed by Katona and Xiao.
