Galois groups of multivariate Tutte polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The multivariate Tutte polynomial $\hat Z_M$ of a matroid $M$ is a generalization of the standard two-variable version, obtained by assigning a separate variable $v_e$ to each element $e$ of the ground set $E$. It encodes the full structure of $M$. Let $\bv = \{v_e\}_{e\in E}$, let $K$ be an arbitrary field, and suppose $M$ is connected. We show that $\hat Z_M$ is irreducible over $K(\bv)$, and give three self-contained proofs that the Galois group of $\hat Z_M$ over $K(\bv)$ is the symmetric group of degree $n$, where $n$ is the rank of $M$. An immediate consequence of this result is that the Galois group of the multivariate Tutte polynomial of any matroid is a direct product of symmetric groups. Finally, we conjecture a similar result for the standard Tutte polynomial of a connected matroid.

The Tutte-Potts connection in the presence of an external magnetic field
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math., 47 (2011) 772-782 • View PublicationBIB
The classical relationship between the Tutte polynomial of graph theory and the Potts model of statistical mechanics has resulted in valuable interactions between the disciplines. Unfortunately, it does not include the external magnetic fields that appear in most Potts model applications. Here we define the V-polynomial, which lifts the classical relationship between the Tutte polynomial and the zero field Potts model to encompass external magnetic fields. The V-polynomial generalizes Nobel and Welsh's W-polynomial, which extends the Tutte polynomial by incorporating vertex weights and adapting contraction to accommodate them. We prove that the variable field Potts model partition function (with its many specializations) is an evaluation of the V-polynomial, and hence a polynomial with deletion-contraction reduction and Fortuin-Kasteleyn type representation. This unifies an important segment of Potts model theory and brings previously successful combinatorial machinery, including complexity results, to bear on a wider range of statistical mechanics models.
Some inequalities for the Tutte polynomial
We prove that the Tutte polynomial of a coloopless paving matroid is convex along the portions of the line segments x+y=p lying in the positive quadrant. Every coloopless paving matroids is in the class of matroids which contain two disjoint bases or whose ground set is the union of two bases of M*. For this latter class we give a proof that T_M(a,a) <= max {T_M(2a,0), T_M(0,2a)} for a >= 2. We conjecture that T_M(1,1) <= max {T_M(2,0), T_M(0,2)} for the same class of matroids. We also prove this conjecture for some families of graphs and matroids.

K-classes of matroids and equivariant localization
Published in Duke Math. J. 161, no. 14 (2012), 2699-2723 • View PublicationBIB
To every matroid, we associate a class in the K-theory of the Grassmannian. We study this class using the method of equivariant localization. In particular, we provide a geometric interpretation of the Tutte polynomial. We also extend results of the second author concerning the behavior of such classes under direct sum, series and parallel connection and two-sum; these results were previously only established for realizable matroids, and their earlier proofs were more difficult.

A Tutte polynomial for toric arrangements
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a multiplicity Tutte polynomial M(x,y), with applications to zonotopes and toric arrangements. We prove that M(x,y) satisfies a deletion-restriction recurrence and has positive coefficients. The characteristic polynomial and the Poincare' polynomial of a toric arrangement are shown to be specializations of the associated polynomial M(x,y), likewise the corresponding polynomials for a hyperplane arrangement are specializations of the ordinary Tutte polynomial. Furthermore, M(1,y) is the Hilbert series of the related discrete Dahmen-Micchelli space, while M(x,1) computes the volume and the number of integral points of the associated zonotope.

Convolution-multiplication identities for Tutte polynomials of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a general multiplication-convolution identity for the multivariate and bivariate rank generating polynomial of a matroid. The bivariate rank generating polynomial is transformable to and from the Tutte polynomial by simple algebraic operations. Several identities, almost all already known in some form, are specializations of this identity. Combinatorial or probabilistic interpretations are given for the specialized identities.

Relative Tutte Polynomials for Colored Graphs and Virtual Knot Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the concept of a relative Tutte polynomial of colored graphs. We show that this relative Tutte polynomial can be computed in a way similar to the classical spanning tree expansion used by Tutte in his original paper on this subject. We then apply the relative Tutte polynomial to virtual knot theory. More specifically, we show that the Kauffman bracket polynomial (hence the Jones polynomial) of a virtual knot can be computed from the relative Tutte polynomial of its face (Tait) graph with some suitable variable substitutions. Our method offers an alternative to the ribbon graph approach, using the face graph obtained from the virtual link diagram directly.

Valuative invariants for polymatroids
Published in Advances in Mathematics 225 (2010) pp. 1840-1892 • View PublicationBIB
Many important invariants for matroids and polymatroids, such as the Tutte polynomial, the Billera-Jia-Reiner quasi-symmetric function, and the invariant $\mathcal G$ introduced by the first author, are valuative. In this paper we construct the $\Z$-modules of all $\Z$-valued valuative functions for labeled matroids and polymatroids on a fixed ground set, and their unlabeled counterparts, the $\Z$-modules of valuative invariants. We give explicit bases for these modules and for their dual modules generated by indicator functions of polytopes, and explicit formulas for their ranks. Our results confirm a conjecture of the first author that $\mathcal G$ is universal for valuative invariants.

Inapproximability of the Tutte polynomial of a planar graph
Published in Computational Complexity, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
The Tutte polynomial of a graph G is a two-variable polynomial T(G;x,y) that encodes many interesting properties of the graph. We study the complexity of the following problem, for rationals x and y: given as input a planar graph G, determine T(G;x,y). Vertigan completely mapped the complexity of exactly computing the Tutte polynomial of a planar graph. He showed that the problem can be solved in polynomial time if (x,y) is on the hyperbola H_q given by (x-1)(y-1)=q for q=1 or q=2 or if (x,y) is one of the two special points (x,y)=(-1,-1) or (x,y)=(1,1). Otherwise, the problem is #P-hard. In this paper, we consider the problem of approximating T(G;x,y), in the usual sense of "fully polynomial randomised approximation scheme" or FPRAS. Roughly speaking, an FPRAS is required to produce, in polynomial time and with high probability, an answer that has small relative error. Assuming that NP is different from RP, we show that there is no FPRAS for the Tutte polynomial in a large portion of the (x,y) plane. In particular, there is no FPRAS if x>1, y<-1 or if y>1, x<-1 or if x<0, y<0 and q>5. Also, there is no FPRAS if x<1, y<1 and q=3. For q>5, our result is intriguing because it shows that there is no FPRAS at (x,y)=(1-q/(1+epsilon),-epsilon) for any positive epsilon but it leaves open the limit point epsilon=0, which corresponds to approximately counting q-colourings of a planar graph.

Ehrhart theory, Modular flow reciprocity, and the Tutte polynomial
Published in Math. Z. 270 (2012), no. 1-2, 1-18 • View PublicationBIB
Given an oriented graph G, the modular flow polynomial counts the number of nowhere-zero Z_k-flows of G. We give a description of the modular flow polynomial in terms of (open) Ehrhart polynomials of lattice polytopes. Using Ehrhart-Macdonald reciprocity we give a combinatorial interpretation for the values of the modular flow polynomial at negative arguments which answers a question of Beck and Zaslavsky (2006). Our construction extends to Z_l-tensions and we recover Stanley's reciprocity theorem for the chromatic polynomial. Combining the combinatorial reciprocity statements for flows and tensions, we give an enumerative interpretation for positive evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of G.

Some Exact Results on the Potts Model Partition Function in a Magnetic Field
Published in J. Phys. A 42, 385004 (2009) • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Potts model in a magnetic field on an arbitrary graph $G$. Using a formula of F. Y. Wu for the partition function $Z$ of this model as a sum over spanning subgraphs of $G$, we prove some properties of $Z$ concerning factorization, monotonicity, and zeros. A generalization of the Tutte polynomial is presented that corresponds to this partition function. In this context we formulate and discuss two weighted graph-coloring problems. We also give a general structural result for $Z$ for cyclic strip graphs.

Products of Linear Forms and Tutte Polynomials

Let Δbe a finite sequence of n vectors from a vector space over any field. We consider the subspace of \operatorname{Sym}(V) spanned by \prod_{v \in S} v, where S is a subsequence of Δ. A result of Orlik and Terao provides a doubly indexed direct sum of this space. The main theorem is that the resulting Hilbert series is the Tutte polynomial evaluation T(Δ;1+x,y). Results of Ardila and Postnikov, Orlik and Terao, Terao, and Wagner are obtained as corollaries.
On uniqueness of the q-state Potts model on a self-dual family of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper deals with the location of the complex zeros of the Tutte polynomial for a class of self-dual graphs. For this class of graphs, as the form of the eigenvalues is known, the regions of the complex plane can be focused on the sets where there is only one dominant eigenvalue in particular containing the positive half plane. Thus, in these regions, the analyticity of the pressure can be derived easily. Next, some examples of graphs with their Tutte polynomial having a few number of eigenvalues are given. The cases of the strip of triangles with a double edge, the wheel and the cycle with an edge having a high order of multiplicity are presented. In particular, for this last example, we remark that the well known conjecture of Chen et al. is false in the finite case.

On the Reconstruction of Graph Invariants
Published in Electronic Notes in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 34 (2009), pp. 375-379 • View PublicationBIB
The reconstruction conjecture has remained open for simple undirected graphs since it was suggested in 1941 by Kelly and Ulam. In an attempt to prove the conjecture, many graph invariants have been shown to be reconstructible from the vertex-deleted deck, and in particular, some prominent graph polynomials. Among these are the Tutte polynomial, the chromatic polynomial and the characteristic polynomial. We show that the interlace polynomial, the U -polynomial, the universal edge elimination polynomial xi and the colored versions of the latter two are reconstructible.

Graphs, links, and duality on surfaces
Published in Combin. Probab. Comput. 20 (2011), 267-287 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a polynomial invariant of graphs on surfaces, $P_G$, generalizing the classical Tutte polynomial. Topological duality on surfaces gives rise to a natural duality result for $P_G$, analogous to the duality for the Tutte polynomial of planar graphs. This property is important from the perspective of statistical mechanics, where the Tutte polynomial is known as the partition function of the Potts model. For ribbon graphs, $P_G$ specializes to the well-known Bollobas-Riordan polynomial, and in fact the two polynomials carry equivalent information in this context. Duality is also established for a multivariate version of the polynomial $P_G$. We then consider a 2-variable version of the Jones polynomial for links in thickened surfaces, taking into account homological information on the surface. An analogue of Thistlethwaite's theorem is established for these generalized Jones and Tutte polynomials for virtual links.
A recipe theorem for the topological Tutte polynomial of Bollobas and Riordan

In [A polynomial invariant of graphs on orientable surfaces, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III Ser. 83, No. 3, 513-531 (2001)] and [A polynomial of graphs on surfaces, Math. Ann. 323, 81-96 (2002)], Bollobas and Riordan generalized the classical Tutte polynomial to graphs cellularly embedded in surfaces, i.e. ribbon graphs, thus encoding topological information not captured by the classical Tutte polynomial. We provide a `recipe theorem' for their new topological Tutte polynomial, R(G). We then relate R(G) to the generalized transition polynomial Q(G) via a medial graph construction, thus extending the relation between the classical Tutte polynomial and the Martin, or circuit partition, polynomial to ribbon graphs. We use this relation to prove a duality property for R(G) that holds for both oriented and unoriented ribbon graphs. We conclude by placing the results of Chumutov and Pak [The Kauffman bracket and the Bollobas-Riordan polynomial of ribbon graphs, Moscow Mathematical Journal 7(3) (2007) 409-418] for virtual links in the context of the relation between R(G) and Q(R).

The Enumeration of Vertex Induced Subgraphs with respect to the Number of Components
Published in Eur. J. Comb. 32(7): 954-974 (2011) • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by the study of community structure in connection networks, we introduce the graph polynomial $Q(G;x,y)$, the bivariate generating function which counts the number of connected components in induced subgraphs. We give a recursive definition of $Q(G;x,y)$ using vertex deletion, vertex contraction and deletion of a vertex together with its neighborhood and prove a universality property. We relate $Q(G;x,y)$ to other known graph invariants and graph polynomials, among them partition functions, the Tutte polynomial, the independence and matching polynomials, and the universal edge elimination polynomial introduced by I. Averbouch, B. Godlin and J.A. Makowsky (2008). We show that $Q(G;x,y)$ is vertex reconstructible in the sense of Kelly and Ulam, discuss its use in computing residual connectedness reliability. Finally we show that the computation of $Q(G;x,y)$ is $\sharp \mathbf{P}$-hard, but Fixed Parameter Tractable for graphs of bounded tree-width and clique-width.

Tutte polynomial and G-parking functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph with vertex set $\{0,1,2,...,n\}$. We allow $G$ to have multiple edges and loops. In this paper, we give a characterization of external activity by some parameters of $G$-parking functions. In particular, we give the definition of the bridge vertex of a $G$-parking function and obtain an expression of the Tutte polynomial $T_G(x,y)$ of $G$ in terms of $G$-parking functions. We find the Tutte polynomial enumerates the $G$-parking function by the number of the bridge vertices.

We prove the invariance of Z under the recently defined partial duality of S. Chmutov [J. Combinatorial Theory, Ser. B, 99 (3): 617-638, 2009] and show that the duality transformation of the multivariate Tutte polynomial is a direct consequence of it.

Complex zero-free regions at large |q| for multivariate Tutte polynomials (alias Potts-model partition functions) with general complex edge weights
Published in J. Combin. Theory B 103, 21-45 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
We find zero-free regions in the complex plane at large |q| for the multivariate Tutte polynomial (also known in statistical mechanics as the Potts-model partition function) Z_G(q,w) of a graph G with general complex edge weights w = {w_e}. This generalizes a result of Sokal (cond-mat/9904146) that applies only within the complex antiferromagnetic regime |1+w_e| \le 1. Our proof uses the polymer-gas representation of the multivariate Tutte polynomial together with the Penrose identity.
