Lexicographic shellability of sects
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show that the Bruhat order on any sect of a symmetric variety of type $AIII$ is lexicographically shellable. Our proof proceeds from a description of these posets as rook placements in a partition shape which fits in a $p \times q$ rectangle. This allows us to extend an EL-labeling of the rook monoid given by Can to an arbitrary sect. As a special case, our result implies that the Bruhat order on matrix Schubert varieties is lexicographically shellable.

A distinction between the paraboloid and the sphere in weighted restriction
For several weights based on lattice point constructions in $\mathbb{R}^d (d \geq 2)$, we prove that the sharp $L^2$ weighted restriction inequality for the sphere is very different than the corresponding result for the paraboloid. The proof uses Poisson summation, linear algebra, and lattice counting. We conjecture that the $L^2$ weighted restriction is generally better for the circle for a wide variety of general sparse weights.

Motivic Coh and Quot zeta functions of singular curves
We present a general and effective algebraic framework for enumerating finite-length quotients of a torsion-free sheaf of arbitrary rank (the Quot zeta function) and finite-length coherent sheaves (the Coh zeta function) over reduced singular curves. We prove that Quot zeta functions are motivically rational, using a novel parametrization and the geometry of affine Grassmannians, and that they satisfy an arbitrary-rank reflection principle, via harmonic analysis. We show that the a normalized high-rank limit of Quot zeta functions converges to the Coh zeta function. As a first application, we compute explicit formulas for these zeta functions for all $y^2 = x^n$ singularities, revealing a surprising and previously unknown connection to Rogers--Ramanujan type $q$-series. Further applications to affine Springer fibers and commuting varieties are also discussed.

Self-dual toric varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe explicitly all multisets of weights whose defining projective toric varieties are self-dual. In addition, we describe a remarkable and unexpected combinatorial behaviour of the defining ideals of these varieties. The toric ideal of a self-dual projective variety is weakly robust, that means the Graver basis is the union of all minimal binomial generating sets. When, in addition, the self-dual projective variety has a non-pyramidal configuration, then the toric ideal is strongly robust, namely the Graver basis is a minimal generating set, therefore there is only one minimal binomial generating set which is also a reduced Gröbner basis with respect to every monomial order and thus, equals the universal Gröbner basis.
The MatrixSchubert package for Macaulay2
Published in J. Softw. Alg. Geom. 15 (2025) 41-55 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the MatrixSchubert package for the computer algebra system Macaulay2. This package has tools to construct and study matrix Schubert varieties and alternating sign matrix (ASM) varieties. The package also introduces tools for quickly computing homological invariants of such varieties, finding the components of an ASM variety, and checking if a union of matrix Schubert varieties is an ASM variety.

Intersection multiplicity one for the Belkale-Kumar product in G/B
Consider the complete flag variety $X$ of a complex semisimple algebraic group $G$. We show that the structure coefficients of the Belkale-Kumar product $\odot_0$, on the cohomology $\mathrm{H}^{*}(X,\mathbf{Z})$, are all either $0$ or $1$. We also derive some consequences. The proof that is mainly geometric also uses new combinatorial results on root systems. Moreover, it is uniform and avoids case by case considerations.

Existence and orthogonality of stable envelopes for bow varieties
Stable envelopes, introduced by Maulik and Okounkov, provide a family of bases for the equivariant cohomology of symplectic resolutions. The theory of stable envelopes provides a fascinating interplay between geometry, combinatorics and integrable systems. In this expository article, we give a self-contained introduction to cohomological stable envelopes of type A bow varieties (an interesting class of varieties extending Nakajima quiver varieties). Our main focus is on the existence and the orthogonality properties of stable envelopes for bow varieties. The restriction to this specific class of varieties allows us to illustrate the theory combinatorially and to provide simplified proofs, both laying a basis for explicit calculations.

A Method for Finding All Permutiples with a Fixed Set of Digits from a Single Known Example
Published in Integers 24 (2024), #A88 • View PublicationBIB
A permutiple is a natural number that is a nontrivial multiple of a permutation of its digits in some base. Special cases of permutiples include cyclic numbers (multiples of cyclic permutations of their digits) and palintiple numbers (multiples of their digit reversals). While cyclic numbers have a fairly straightforward description, palintiple numbers admit many varieties and cases. A previous paper attempts to get a better handle on the general case by constructing new examples of permutiples with the same set of digits, multiplier, and length as a known example. However, the results are not sufficient for finding all possible examples except when the multiplier divides the base. Using an approach based on the methods of this previous paper, we develop a new method which enables us to find all examples under any conditions.

Classification of Minimal Separating Sets of Low Genus Surfaces
A minimal separating set in a connected topological space $X$ is a subset $L \subset X$ with the property that $X \setminus L$ is disconnected, but if $L^{\prime}$ is a proper subset of $L$, then $X \setminus L^{\prime}$ is connected. Such sets show up in a variety of contexts. For example, in a wide class of metric spaces, if we choose distinct points p and q, then the set of points x satisfying d(x, p) = d(x, q) is a minimal separating set. In this paper we classify which topological graphs can be realized as minimal separating sets in surfaces of low genus. In general the question of whether a graph can be embedded at all in a surface is a difficult one, so our work is partly computational. We classify graphs embeddings which are minimal separating in a given genus and write a computer program to find all such embeddings and their underlying graphs.

Growth Diagrams for Schubert RSK
Motivated by classical combinatorial Schubert calculus on the Grassmannian, Huang--Pylyavskyy introduced a generalized theory of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) correspondence for studying Schubert calculus on the complete flag variety via insertion algorithms. The inputs of the correspondence are certain biwords, the insertion objects are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are certain chains in Bruhat order. In particular, they defined plactic biwords and showed that classical Knuth relations can be generalized to plactic biwords. In this paper, we give an analogue of Fomin's growth diagrams for this generalized RSK correspondence on plactic biwords. We show that this growth diagram recovers the bijection between pipe dreams and bumpless pipe dreams of Gao--Huang.
Equivariant Tutte Polynomial
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. (2025) • View PublicationBIB
We use the equivariant cohomology ring of the permutohedral variety to study matroids and their invariants. Investigating the pushforward of matroid Chern classes defined by A. Berget, C. Eur, H. Spink and D. Tseng to the product space $\mathbb{P}^n \times \mathbb{P}^n$, we establish an equivariant generalization of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid. This was suggested in a survey paper by M.Michałek. We discuss how this polynomial encodes properties of the matroid by looking at special evaluations. We further introduce an equivariant generalization of the reduced characteristic polynomial of a matroid.

Combinatorial decompositions for deformed or decorated classes of maps
The perturbative expansion of tensorial field theories in Feynman graphs can be interpreted as weighted generating series of some piecewise linear varieties. This simple fact establishes a link between two a priori distinct fields: the combinatorics of discrete manifolds on one hand and tensorial field theories on the other hand. In this thesis, we study different aspects revolving around this connection between combinatorics and field theory. First, we consider constellations model, which generalize maps and their algebraic properties. This makes them suited to probe the b-deformation, a deformation of the algebra of symmetric functions. We will study the constraints satisfied by the generating series of cubical b-deformed constellations. Second, we analyze the double scaling limit of particular tensor models of order 3. For tensor of order greater than two, the nature of the 1/N-expansion is qualitatively different from the matrix case of order 2. In particular, only the leading order graphs are fully characterized. Despite this fact, it is possible to identify graphs of subleading orders contributing to the double scaling limit by implementing the scheme decomposition for Feynman graphs of these theories. An analysis of the singularity of the schemes then allows us to give a complete characterization of the graphs contributing to the double scaling limit. Finally, we investigate a particular link between a tensor and a vector field theory which both admit a melonic limit. Namely, we will show that we can obtain the vectorial Amit-Roginski model by considering perturbations around a classical solution of the Boulatov model, a tensorial theory. We give sufficient conditions on the classical solution so that the effective action for the perturbation around this solution takes the form of the Amit-Roginski action.

On the geometry of tensor products over finite fields
In this paper we study finite dimensional algebras, in particular finite semifields, through their correspondence with nonsingular threefold tensors. We introduce a alternative embedding of the tensor product space into a projective space. This model allows us to understand tensors and their contractions in a new geometric way, relating the contraction of a tensor with a natural subspace of a subgeometry. This leads us to new results on invariants and classifications of tensors and algebras and on nonsingular fourfold tensors. A detailed study of the geometry of this setup for the case of the threefold tensor power of a vector space of dimension two over a finite field surprisingly leads to a new construction of quasi-hermitian varieties in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q^2)$.

Towards the classification of finite-dimensional diagonally graded commutative algebras
Any finite-dimensional commutative (associative) graded algebra with all nonzero homogeneous subspaces one-dimensional is defined by a symmetric coefficient matrix. This algebraic structure gives a basic kind of $A$-graded algebras originally studied by Arnold. In this paper, we call them diagonally graded commutative algebras (DGCAs) and verify that the isomorphism classes of DGCAs of dimension $\leq 7$ over an arbitrary field are in bijection with the equivalence classes consisting of coefficient matrices with the same distribution of nonzero entries, while dramatically there may be infinitely many isomorphism classes of dimension $n$ corresponding to one equivalence class of coefficient matrices when $n\geq 8$. Furthermore, we adopt the Skjelbred-Sund method of central extensions to study the isomorphism classes of DGCAs, and associate any DGCA with a undirected simple graph to explicitly describe its corresponding second (graded) commutative cohomology group as an affine variety.

Succinct Encodings of Binary Trees with Application to AVL Trees
We use a novel decomposition to create succinct data structures -- supporting a wide range of operations on static trees in constant time -- for a variety tree classes, extending results of Munro, Nicholson, Benkner, and Wild. Motivated by the class of AVL trees, we further derive asymptotics for the information-theoretic lower bound on the number of bits needed to store tree classes whose generating functions satisfy certain functional equations. In particular, we prove that AVL trees require approximately $0.938$ bits per node to encode.

Strongly dominant weight polytopes are cubes
For any root system of rank $r$, we study the "dominant weight polytope" $P^λ$ associated with a strongly dominant weight $λ$. We prove that $P^λ$ is combinatorially equivalent to the $r$-dimensional cube. As an application, we give a new proof of the known formulas for Betti numbers of Peterson varieties in classical Lie types.
Lattice Path Delta Matroids
We initiate the study of a type $C_n$ generalization of the lattice path matroids defined by Bonin, de Mier, and Noy. These are delta matroids whose feasible sets are in bijection with lattice paths which are symmetric along the main diagonal. We describe deletion, contraction, enveloping matroids, and the homogeneous components of these delta matroids in terms of the combinatorics of symmetric lattice paths. In the second half, we study the convex geometry of the feasible polytopes of lattice path delta matroids. We show that these polytopes decompose into the feasible polytope of special lattice paths corresponding to intervals in the type $C_n$ Gale order whose related Richardson variety is a toric variety. Further, these special polytopes inherit a unimodular triangulation from Stanley's Eulerian triangulation of the hypercube. As a consequence, the volume of these polytopes is the proportion of permutations with specific ascent sets.

Likelihood Geometry of Reflexive Polytopes
Published in Alg. Stat. 15 (2024) 113-143 • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of maximum likelihood (ML) estimation for statistical models defined by reflexive polytopes. Our focus is on the maximum likelihood degree of these models as an algebraic measure of complexity of the corresponding optimization problem. We compute the ML degrees of all 4319 classes of three-dimensional reflexive polytopes, and observe some surprising behavior in terms of the presence of gaps between ML degrees and degrees of the associated toric varieties. We interpret these drops in the context of discriminants and prove formulas for the ML degree for families of reflexive polytopes, including the hypercube and its dual, the cross polytope, in arbitrary dimension. In particular, we determine a family of embeddings for the $d$-cube that implies ML degree one. Finally, we discuss generalized constructions of families of reflexive polytopes in terms of their ML degrees.

Toric Schubert varieties and directed Dynkin diagrams
A flag variety is a homogenous variety $G/B$ where $G$ is a simple algebraic group over the complex numbers and $B$ is a Boel subgroup of $G$. A Schubert variety $X_w$ is a subvariety of $G/B$ indexed by an element $w$ in the Weyl group of $G$. It is called toric if it is a toric variety with respect to the maximal torus of $G$ in $B$. In this paper, we associate an edge-labeled digraph $\mathcal{G}_w$ with a toric Schubert variety $X_w$ and classify toric Schubert varieties up to isomorphism. We also give a simple criterion of when a toric Schubert variety $X_w$ is (weak) Fano in terms of $\mathcal{G}_w$. Finally, we discuss whether toric Schubert varieties can be distinguished by their integral cohomology rings up to isomorphism and show that this is the case when $G$ is of simply-laced type.
Chromatic functions, interval orders and increasing forests
The chromatic quasisymmetric functions (csf) of Shareshian and Wachs associated to unit interval orders have attracted a lot of interest since their introduction in 2016, both in combinatorics and geometry, because of their relation to the famous Stanley-Stembridge conjecture (1993) and to the topology of Hessenberg varieties, respectively. In the present work we study the csf associated to the larger class of interval orders with no restriction on the length of the intervals. Inspired by an article of Abreu and Nigro, we show that these csf are weighted sums of certain quasisymmetric functions associated to the increasing spanning forests of the associated incomparability graphs. Furthermore, we define quasisymmetric functions that include the unicellular LLT symmetric functions and generalize an identity due to Carlsson and Mellit. Finally we conjecture a formula giving their expansion in the type 1 power sum quasisymmetric functions which should extend a theorem of Athanasiadis.
