A matroidal perspective on the tropical Prym variety
We associate a matroid $M(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$ to a harmonic double cover $π:\widetildeΓ\to Γ$ of metric graphs. The matroid $M(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$ is a geometric interpretation of Zaslavsky's signed graphic matroid. We show that the principalization $\mathrm{Prym}_p(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$ of the tropical Prym variety of the double cover can be reconstructed from $M(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$, equipped with certain additional decorations. We describe the simplification of the matroid $M(\widetildeΓ/Γ)$ and show that the Prym variety does not change under simplification.
Multimatroids and rational curves with cyclic action
We study the connection between multimatroids and moduli spaces of rational curves with cyclic action. Multimatroids are generalizations of matroids and delta-matroids introduced by Bouchet, which naturally arise in topological graph theory. The vantage point of moduli of curves provides a tropical framework for studying multimatroids, generalizing the previous connection between type-A permutohedral varieties (Losev--Manin moduli spaces) and matroids, and the connection between type-B permutohedral varieties (Batyrev--Blume moduli spaces) and delta-matroids. Specifically, we equate a combinatorial nef cone of the moduli space with the space of $\mathbb{R}$-multimatroids, a slight generalization of multimatroids, and we introduce the independence polytopal complex of a multimatroid, whose volume is identified with an intersection number on the moduli space. As an application, for the generating set of the Chow ring of the moduli space consisting of all psi-classes and their pullbacks along certain forgetful maps, we give a combinatorial formula for their intersection numbers by relating to the volumes of independence polytopal complexes of multimatroids.
Induced subgraphs and tree decompositions XIII. Basic obstructions in $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs for finite $\mathcal{H}$
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2024:6, 30pp • View PublicationBIB
Unlike minors, the induced subgraph obstructions to bounded treewidth come in a large variety, including, for every $t\geq 1$, the $t$-basic obstructions: the graphs $K_{t+1}$ and $K_{t,t}$, along with the subdivisions of the $t$-by-$t$ wall and their line graphs. But this list is far from complete. The simplest example of a ''non-basic'' obstruction is due to Pohoata and Davies (independently). For every $n \geq 1$, they construct certain graphs of treewidth $n$ and with no $3$-basic obstruction as an induced subgraph, which we call $n$-arrays. Let us say a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ is clean if the only obstructions to bounded treewidth in $\mathcal{G}$ are in fact the basic ones. It follows that a full description of the induced subgraph obstructions to bounded treewidth is equivalent to a characterization of all families $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs for which the class of all $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs is clean (a graph $G$ is $\mathcal{H}$-free if no induced subgraph of $G$ is isomorphic to any graph in $\mathcal{H}$). This remains elusive, but there is an immediate necessary condition: if $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs are clean, then there are only finitely many integers $n\geq 1$ such that there is an $n$-array which is $\mathcal{H}$-free. The above necessary condition is not sufficient in general. However, the situation turns out to be different if $\mathcal{H}$ is finite: we prove that for every finite set $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, the class of all $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs is clean if and only if there is no $\mathcal{H}$-free $n$-array except possibly for finitely many values of $n$.
Geometric Bruhat order on (0,1)-matrices
The combinatorially and the geometrically defined partial orders on the set of permutations coincide. We extend this result to $(0,1)$-matrices with fixed row and column sums. Namely, the Bruhat order induced by the geometry of a Cherkis bow variety of type A coincides with one of the two combinatorially defined Bruhat orders on the same set.

Derived Categories of Permutahedral and Stellahedral Varieties
We utilize the coherent-constructible correspondence to construct full strongly exceptional collections of nef line bundles in the derived category of a toric variety through the combinatorics of constructible sheaves built from polytopes. To show that sequences are full, we build exact complexes of line bundles that categorify the relations in the McMullen polytope algebra. We compute the homomorphisms between certain constructible sheaves on polytopes and use this to reduce the question of exceptionality to showing that certain set differences of polytopes are contractible. As an application of our method, we construct full strongly exceptional collections of nef line bundles for the toric varieties associated to the permutahedron, stellahedron, and the type $B_n$ Coxeter permutahedron. The line bundles in our collections are indexed by base polytopes of loopless Schubert matroids, independence polytopes of all Schubert matroids, and feasible polytopes of loopless Schubert delta matroids, respectively. Our collections satisfy a number of nice properties: First, the quiver with relations that encodes the endomorphism algebra of the tilting sheaf can be described matroid-theoretically as a slight extension of the notion of weak maps and inclusion of matroids; Second, our collections are invariant under the natural symmetries of the corresponding fans; Finally, the induced semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived categories refines the cuspidal semi-orthogonal decomposition as studied by Castravet and Tevelev. This gives a full strongly exceptional collection of nef line bundles for the cuspidal parts of the derived categories of our varieties indexed by loopless and coloopless Schubert matroids and Schubert delta matroids.

Fibered toric varieties
A toric variety is called fibered if it can be represented as a total space of fibre bundle over toric base and with toric fiber. Fibered toric varieties form a special case of toric variety bundles. In this note we first give an introduction to the class of fibered toric varieties. Then we use them to illustrate some known and conjectural results on topology and intersection theory of general toric variety bundles. Finally, using the language of fibered toric varieties, we compute the equivariant cohomology rings of smooth complete toric varieties.

Total positivity for matroid Schubert varieties
We define the totally nonnegative matroid Schubert variety $\mathcal Y_V$ of a linear subspace $V \subset \mathbb R^n$. We show that $\mathcal Y_V$ is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, with strata indexed by pairs of acyclic flats of the oriented matroid of $V$. This closely resembles the regularity theorem for totally nonnegative generalized flag varieties. As a corollary, we obtain a regular CW structure on the real matroid Schubert variety of $V$.

On the Smooth Locus in Flat Linear Degenerations of Flag Varieties
We use some moment graph techniques, recently introduced by Lanini and Pütz, to provide a combinatorial description of the smooth locus in flat linear degenerations of flag varieties, generalizing a result proved by Cerulli Irelli, Feigin and Reineke for the Feigin degeneration. Moreover, we propose a different combinatorial criterion linking the smoothness at a fixed point to transitive tournaments.

Modular law through GKM theory
The solution of Shareshian-Wachs conjecture by Brosnan-Chow and Guay-Paquet tied the graded chromatic symmetric functions on indifference graphs (or unit interval graphs) and the cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties with the dot action. A similar result holds between unicellular LLT polynomials and twins of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. A recent result by Abreu-Nigro enabled us to prove these results by showing the modular law for the geometrical objects, and this is indeed done by Precup-Sommers and Kiem-Lee. In this paper, we give elementary and simpler proofs to the modular law through GKM theory.

Hodge theory for tropical fans
This paper is the first in a series devoted to the development of a Hodge theory for tropical varieties. We introduce a notion of T-stability for tropical fans and prove that various geometric properties of tropical fans are T-stable. As a consequence, we establish Kähler properties for the Chow ring in a large class of tropical fans, going beyond the case of matroids and their Bergman fans. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof of the Kähler package for combinatorial geometries. The approach makes it possible to deal with tropical fans with general weights.

Highest Weight Varieties and Narayana Numbers
In this exposition, we compute the hilbert series of the coordinate ring of some highest weight varieties. We also explain why Narayana numbers (and their generalizations) appear naturally in the numerator of the hilbert series of the coordinate ring of complex grassmanian Gr(d,n+d+1) and of the minimal nilpotent adjoint orbit in sl_n(C). These calculations might be related to some cluster algebra structures.

Euler characteristics of affine ADE Nakajima quiver varieties via collapsing fibers
Published in J. Lond. Math. Soc., Vol 111, Issue 2 (2025), e70074 • Search Publication
We prove a universal substitution formula that compares generating series of Euler characteristics of Nakajima quiver varieties associated with affine ADE diagrams at generic and at certain nongeneric stability conditions via a study of collapsing fibres in the associated variation of GIT map, unifying and generalising earlier results of the last two authors with Némethi and of Nakajima. As a special case, we compute generating series of Euler characteristics of noncommutative Quot schemes of Kleinian orbifolds. In type A and rank 1, we give a second, combinatorial proof of our substitution formula, using torus localisation and partition enumeration. This gives a combinatorial model of the fibers of the variation of GIT map, and also leads to relations between our results and the representation theory of the affine and finite Lie algebras in type A.

Generalized GM-MDS: Polynomial Codes are Higher Order MDS
The GM-MDS theorem, conjectured by Dau-Song-Dong-Yuen and proved by Lovett and Yildiz-Hassibi, shows that the generator matrices of Reed-Solomon codes can attain every possible configuration of zeros for an MDS code. The recently emerging theory of higher order MDS codes has connected the GM-MDS theorem to other important properties of Reed-Solomon codes, including showing that Reed-Solomon codes can achieve list decoding capacity, even over fields of size linear in the message length. A few works have extended the GM-MDS theorem to other families of codes, including Gabidulin and skew polynomial codes. In this paper, we generalize all these previous results by showing that the GM-MDS theorem applies to any polynomial code, i.e., a code where the columns of the generator matrix are obtained by evaluating linearly independent polynomials at different points. We also show that the GM-MDS theorem applies to dual codes of such polynomial codes, which is non-trivial since the dual of a polynomial code may not be a polynomial code. More generally, we show that GM-MDS theorem also holds for algebraic codes (and their duals) where columns of the generator matrix are chosen to be points on some irreducible variety which is not contained in a hyperplane through the origin. Our generalization has applications to constructing capacity-achieving list-decodable codes as shown in a follow-up work by Brakensiek-Dhar-Gopi-Zhang, where it is proved that randomly punctured algebraic-geometric (AG) codes achieve list-decoding capacity over constant-sized fields.

Lawrence Lifts, Matroids, and Maximum Likelihood Degrees
Published in Alg. Stat. 16 (2025) 217-242 • View PublicationBIB
We express the maximum likelihood (ML) degrees of a family toric varieties in terms of Mobius invariants of matroids. The family of interest are those parametrized by monomial maps given by Lawrence lifts of totally unimodular matrices with even circuits. Specifying these matrices to be vertex-edge incidence matrices of bipartite graphs gives the ML degrees of some hierarchical models and three dimensional quasi-independence models. Included in this list are the no-three-way interaction models with one binary random variable, for which, we give closed formulae.

Torus quotients of Richardson varieties in $G_{r,qr+1}$
Let $r$ and $q$ be positive integers and $n=qr+1.$ Let $G = SL(n, \mathbb{C})$ and $T$ be a maximal torus of $G.$ Let $P^{α_r}$ be the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_r.$ Let $ω_r$ be the fundamental weight corresponding to $α_r.$ Let $W$ be the Weyl group of $G$ and $W_{P^{α_r}}$ be the Weyl group of $P^{α_r}.$ Let $W^{P^{α_r}}$ be the set of all minimal coset representatives of $W/W_{P^{α_r}}$ in $W.$ Let $w_{r,n}$ (respectively, $v_{r,n}$) be the minimal (respectively, maximal) element in $W^{P^{α_{r}}}$ such that $w_{r,n}(nω_r) \leq 0$ (respectively, $v_{r,n}(nω_r) \geq 0$). Let $v \leq v_{r,n}$ and $X^v_{w_{r,n}}$ be the Richardson variety in $G_{r,n}$ corresponding to $v$ and $w_{r,n}.$ In this article, we give a sufficient condition on $v$ such that the GIT quotient of $X^{v}_{w_{r,n}}$ for the action of $T$ is the product of projective spaces with respect to the descent of the line bundle $\mathcal{L}(nω_r).$

Standard Extension Algebras I: Perverse Sheaves and Fukaya Calculus
In this first of a series of articles on standard extension algebras we study standard perverse sheaves on varieties with $\mathbb{G}_m$-actions. Based on Braden's hyperbolic localisation, we describe their extension algebra geometrically via a convolution structure on the intersections of attracting with repelling cells. We introduce a multiplicative structure on open Richardson varieties which provides a practical way to compose these extensions in case of flag varieties. For open Richardson varieties in Grassmannians we construct two explicit cell decompositions, of Gauss- and of Deodhar-type. It is shown that the latter is a stratification with the same combinatorics as Deodhar's decomposition. We introduce a calculus of Fukaya diagrams to encode the geometry of the decompositions. It provides a model for the cohomology of open Richardson varieties and thus for standard extensions. The calculus is motivated by the Mak-Smith Fukaya-Seidel category of a natural Lefschetz fibration and should allow to compute morphism spaces in there. We finally discuss the relation of our work to extensions of (parabolic) Verma modules in category O as well as to the computation of R- and R'-polynomials.
Integer diagonal forms for subset intersection relations
For integers $0 \leq \ell \leq k_{r} \leq k_{c} \leq n$, we give a description for the Smith group of the incidence matrix with rows (columns) indexed by the size $k_r$ ($k_c$, respectively) subsets of an $n$-element set, where incidence means intersection in a set of size $\ell$. This generalizes work of Wilson and Bier from the 1990s which dealt only with the case where incidence meant inclusion. Our approach also describes the Smith group of any matrix in the $\mathbb{Z}$-linear span of these matrices so includes all integer matrices in the Bose-Mesner algebra of the Johnson association scheme: for example, the association matrices themselves as well as the Laplacian, signless Laplacian, Seidel adjacency matrix, etc. of the associated graphs. In particular, we describe the critical (also known as sandpile) groups of these graphs. The complexity of our formula grows with the parameters $k_{r}$ and $k_{c}$, but is independent of $n$ and $\ell$, which often leads to an efficient algorithm for computing these groups. We illustrate our techniques to give diagonal forms of matrices attached to the Kneser and Johnson graphs for subsets of size $3$, whose invariants have never before been described, and recover results from a variety of papers in the literature in a unified way.

Real phase structures on tropical manifolds and patchworks in higher codimension
This paper generalises the homeomorphism theorem behind Viro's combinatorial patchworking of hypersurfaces in toric varieties to arbitrary codimension using tropical geometry. We first define the patchwork of a polyhedral space equipped with a real phase structure. When the polyhedral subspace is tropically non-singular, we show that the patchwork is a topological manifold. When a non-singular tropical variety appears as a tropical limit of a real analytic family, we show that the real part of a fibre of the family near the tropical limit is homeomorphic to the patchwork. Finally we extend the spectral sequence introduced by the last two authors in the case of hypersurfaces to non-singular tropical varieties with real phase structures. As a corollary, we obtain bounds on the Betti numbers of the patchwork in terms of the dimensions of the tropical homology groups with coefficients modulo two.

Lattices of varieties of plactic-like monoids
We study the equational theories and bases of meets and joins of several varieties of plactic-like monoids. Using those results, we construct sublattices of the lattice of varieties of monoids, generated by said varieties. We calculate the axiomatic ranks of their elements, obtain plactic-like congruences whose corresponding factor monoids generate varieties in the lattice, and determine which varieties are joins of the variety of commutative monoids and a finitely generated variety. We also show that the hyposylvester and metasylvester monoids generate the same variety as the sylvester monoid.
