The Specter (and Spectra) of Miner Extractable Value
Miner extractable value (MEV) refers to any excess value that a transaction validator can realize by manipulating the ordering of transactions. In this work, we introduce a simple theoretical definition of the 'cost of MEV', prove some basic properties, and show that the definition is useful via a number of examples. In a variety of settings, this definition is related to the 'smoothness' of a function over the symmetric group. From this definition and some basic observations, we recover a number of results from the literature.
Newton-Okounkov polytopes of type $A$ flag varieties of small ranks arising from cluster structures
A flag variety is a smooth projective homogeneous variety. In this paper, we study Newton-Okounkov polytopes of the flag variety $Fl(\mathbb{C}^4)$ arising from its cluster structure. More precisely, we present defining inequalities of such Newton-Okounkov polytopes of $Fl(\mathbb{C}^4)$. Moreover, we classify these polytopes, establishing their equivalence under unimodular transformations.

The cluster complex for cluster Poisson varieties and representations of acyclic quivers
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a skew-symmetrizable cluster Poisson variety. The cluster complex $Δ^+(\mathcal{X})$ was introduced by Gross, Hacking, Keel and Kontsevich. It codifies the theta functions on $\mathcal{X}$ that restrict to a character of a seed torus. Every seed ${ \bf s}$ for $\mathcal{X}$ determines a fan realization $Δ^+_{\bf s}(\mathcal{X})$ of $Δ^+(\mathcal{X})$. For every ${\bf s}$ we provide a simple and explicit description of the cones of $Δ^+_{\bf s}(\mathcal{X})$ and their facets using ${\bf c}$-vectors. Moreover, we give formulas for the theta functions parametrized by the integral points of $Δ^+_{ \bf s}(\mathcal{X})$ in terms of $F$-polynomials. In case $\mathcal{X}$ is skew-symmetric and the quiver $Q$ associated to ${\bf s}$ is acyclic, we describe the normal vectors of the supporting hyperplanes of the cones of $Δ^+_{\bf s}(\mathcal{X})$ using ${\bf g}$-vectors of (non-necessarily rigid) objects in $\mathsf{K}^{\rm b}(\text{proj} \; kQ)$.
Quantum K Whitney relations for partial flag varieties
In a recent paper, we stated conjectural presentations for the equivariant quantum K ring of partial flag varieties, motivated by physics considerations. In this companion paper, we analyze these presentations mathematically. We start by proving a Nakayama type result for quantum K theory: if the conjectured set of relations deforms a complete set of relations of the classical K theory ring, then they must form a complete set of relations for the quantum K ring. We prove the conjectured presentation in the case of the incidence varieties, and we show that if a quantum K divisor axiom holds (as conjectured by Buch and Mihalcea), then the conjectured presentation also holds for the complete flag variety. Finally, we briefly revisit the change of variables relating the mathematics and physics presentations.

Circular external difference families, graceful labellings and cyclotomy
(Strong) circular external difference families (which we denote as CEDFs and SCEDFs) can be used to construct nonmalleable threshold schemes. They are a variation of (strong) external difference families, which have been extensively studied in recent years. We provide a variety of constructions for CEDFs based on graceful labellings ($α$-valuations) of lexicographic products $C_n \boldsymbol{\cdot} K_{\ell}^c$, where $C_n$ denotes a cycle of length $n$. SCEDFs having more than two subsets do not exist. However, we can construct close approximations (more specifically, certain types of circular algebraic manipulation detection (AMD) codes) using the theory of cyclotomic numbers in finite fields.
On quasi-Hermitian varieties in even characteristic and related orthogonal arrays
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Designs, 2025; 33:109-122 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the BM quasi-Hermitian varieties introduced in [A. Aguglia, A. Cossidente, G. Korchmàros, On quasi-Hermitian Varieties, J. Combin. Des. 20 (2012) 433-447.] in characteristc $2$ and dimension $3$. After a brief investigation of their combinatorial properties, we first show that all of these varieties are projectively equivalent, exhibiting a behavior which is strikingly different from what happens in odd characteristic, see [A. Aguglia, L. Giuzzi, On the equivalence of certain quasi-Hermitian varieties, J. Combin. Des. 1-15 (2022)]. This completes the classification project started in that paper. Here we prove more; indeed, by using previous results, we explicitly determine the structure of the full collineation group stabilizing these varieties. Finally, as a byproduct of our investigation, we also construct a family of simple orthogonal arrays $O(q^5,q^4,q,2)$, with entries in $\mathrm{GF}{q}$, where $q$ is an even prime power. Orthogonal arrays (OA's) are principally used to minimize the number of experiments needed in order to investigate how variables in testing interact with each other.

A Quadratic Vinogradov Mean Value Theorem in Finite Fields
Let $p$ be a prime, let $s \geq 3$ be a natural number and let $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p$ be a non-empty set satisfying $|A| \ll p^{1/2}$. Denoting $J_s(A)$ to be the number of solutions to the system of equations \[ \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i - x_{i+s}) = \sum_{i=1}^{s} (x_i^2 - x_{i+s}^2) = 0, \] with $x_1, \dots, x_{2s} \in A$, our main result implies that \[ J_s(A) \ll |A|^{2s - 2 - 1/9}. \] This can be seen as a finite field analogue of the quadratic Vinogradov mean value theorem. Our techniques involve a variety of combinatorial geometric estimates, including studying incidences between cartesian products $A\times A$ and a special family of modular hyperbolae.

Nil-Hecke rings and the Schubert calculus
The purpose of the present notes is to give a self-contained exposition on the use of the techniques of Nil-Hecke algebras in the localization approach to the equivariant Schubert calculus for cohomology of flag varieties. We also demonstrate how these techniques can be applied to non-crystallographic root systems as well as to study (connective) $K$-theory of flag varieties.

Overview on the theory of double flag varieties for symmetric pairs
Let $ G $ be a connected reductive algebraic group and its symmetric subgroup $ K $. The variety $ \dblFV = K/Q \times G/P $ is called a double flag variety, where $ Q $ and $ P $ are parabolic subgroups of $ K $ and $ G $ respectively. In this article, we make a survey on the theory of double flag varieties for a symmetric pair $ (G, K) $ and report entirely new results and theorems on this theory. Most important topic is the finiteness of $ K $-orbits on $ \dblFV $. We summarize the classification of $ \dblFV $ of finite type, which are scattered in the literatures. In some respects such classifications are complete, and in some cases not. In particular, we get a classification of double flag varieties of finite type when a symmetric pair is of type AIII, using the theorems of Homma who describes ``indecomposable'' objects of such double flag varieties. Together with these classifications, newly developed embedding theory provides double flag varieties of finite type, which are new. Other ingredients in this article are Steinberg theory, generalization of Robinson-Schensted correspondence, and orbit classification via quiver representations. We hope this article is useful for those who want to study the theory of double flag varieties.
A Uniform Identification of Stable Sheaf Cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers generalizations of certain arithmetic complexes appearing in the work of Raicu and VandeBogert in connection with the study of stable sheaf cohomology on flag varieties. Defined over the ring of integer valued polynomials, we prove an isomorphism of these complexes as conjectured by Gao, Raicu, and VandeBogert. In particular, this shows that a previously made identification between the stable sheaf cohomology of hook and two column partition Schur functors applied to the cotangent sheaf of projective space can be made to be uniform with respect to these complexes. These results are extended to the projective space defined over the integers.

Standard Monomials for Positroid Varieties
We give an explicit characterization of the standard monomials for positroid varieties with respect to the Hodge degeneration and give a Gröbner basis. Furthermore, we show that promotion and evacuation biject standard monomials of a positroid variety with those of its cyclic shifts and $w_0$-reflection, respectively. The connection to promotion allows us to identify standard monomials of a positroid variety with Lam's cyclic Demazure crystal. Using a recurrence on the Hilbert series, we give an inductive formula for the character of cyclic Demazure modules.

Crystal Structure of Upper Cluster Algebras
We describe the upper seminormal crystal structure for the $μ$-supported $δ$-vectors for any quiver with potential with reachable frozen vertices, or equivalently for the tropical points of the corresponding cluster $\mc{X}$-variety. We show that the crystal structure can be algebraically lifted to the generic basis of the upper cluster algebra. This can be viewed as an additive categorification of the crystal structure arising from cluster algebras. We introduce the biperfect bases in the cluster algebra setting and give a description of all biperfect bases, which are parametrized by lattice points in a product of polyhedral sets. We illustrate this theory from classical examples and new examples.

On the evolution of random integer compositions
We explore how the asymptotic structure of a random $n$-term weak integer composition of $m$ evolves, as $m$ increases from zero. The primary focus is on establishing thresholds for the appearance and disappearance of substructures. These include the longest and shortest runs of zero terms or of nonzero terms, longest increasing runs, longest runs of equal terms, largest squares (runs of $k$ terms each equal to $k$), as well as a wide variety of other patterns. Of particular note is the dichotomy between the appearance and disappearance of exact consecutive patterns, with smaller patterns appearing before larger ones, whereas longer patterns disappear before shorter ones.

Classification of normal phylogenetic varieties for tripods
We provide a complete classification of normal phylogenetic varieties coming from tripods, and more generally, from trivalent trees. Let $G$ be an abelian group. We prove that the group-based phylogenetic variety $X_{G,\mathcal{T}}$, for any trivalent tree $\mathcal{T}$, is projectively normal if and only if $G\in \{\mathbb{Z}_2, \mathbb{Z}_3, \mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2, \mathbb{Z}_4, \mathbb{Z}_5, \mathbb{Z}_7\}$.

Numerical characterization of the hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two
We study the numerical characterization of two dimensional hard Lefschetz classes given by the complete intersections of nef classes. In Shenfeld and van Handel's breakthrough work on the characterization of the extremals of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality for convex polytopes, they proposed an open question on the algebraic analogue of the characterization. By taking further inspiration from our previous work with Shang on hard Lefschetz theorems for free line bundles, we formulate and refine the conjectural picture more precisely and settle the open question when the collection of nef classes is given by a rearrangement of supercriticality, which in particular includes the big nef collection as a special case. The main results enable us to refine some previous results and study the extremals of Hodge index inequality, and more importantly provide the first series of examples of hard Lefschetz classes of dimension two both in algebraic geometry and analytic geometry, in which one can allow nontrivial augmented base locus and thus drop the semi-ampleness or semi-positivity assumption. As a key ingredient of the numerical characterization, we establish a local Hodge index inequality for Lorentzian polynomials, which is the algebraic analogue of the local Alexandrov-Fenchel inequality obtained by Shenfeld-van Handel for convex polytopes. This result holds in broad contexts, e.g., it holds on a smooth projective variety, on a compact Kähler manifold and on a Lorentzian fan, which contains the Bergman fan of a matroid or polymatroid as a typical example.
Essentially tight bounds for rainbow cycles in proper edge-colourings
An edge-coloured graph is said to be rainbow if no colour appears more than once. Extremal problems involving rainbow objects have been a focus of much research over the last decade as they capture the essence of a number of interesting problems in a variety of areas. A particularly intensively studied question due to Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte from 2007 asks for the maximum possible average degree of a properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices without a rainbow cycle. Improving upon a series of earlier bounds, Tomon proved an upper bound of $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ for this question. Very recently, Janzer-Sudakov and Kim-Lee-Liu-Tran independently removed the $o(1)$ term in Tomon's bound, showing a bound of $O(\log^2 n)$. We prove an upper bound of $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ for this maximum possible average degree when there is no rainbow cycle. Our result is tight up to the $o(1)$ term, and so it essentially resolves this question. In addition, we observe a connection between this problem and several questions in additive number theory, allowing us to extend existing results on these questions for abelian groups to the case of non-abelian groups.

Quantum Bruhat graphs and tilted Richardson varieties
Quantum Bruhat graph is a weighted directed graph on a finite Weyl group first defined by Brenti-Fomin-Postnikov. It encodes quantum Monk's rule and can be utilized to study the $3$-point Gromov-Witten invariants of the flag variety. In this paper, we provide an explicit formula for the minimal weights between any pair of permutations on the quantum Bruhat graph, and consequently obtain an Ehresmann-like characterization for the tilted Bruhat order. Moreover, for any ordered pair of permutations $u$ and $v$, we define the tilted Richardson variety $T_{u,v}$, with a stratification that gives a geometric meaning to intervals in the tilted Bruhat order. We provide a few equivalent definitions to this new family of varieties that include Richardson varieties, and establish some fundamental geometric properties including their dimensions and closure relations.

The HHMP decomposition of the permutohedron and degenerations of torus orbits in flag varieties
Let $Z\subset Fl(n)$ be the closure of a generic torus orbit in the full flag variety. Anderson-Tymoczko express the cohomology class of $Z$ as a sum of classes of Richardson varieties. Harada-Horiguchi-Masuda-Park give a decomposition of the permutohedron, the moment map image of $Z$, into subpolytopes corresponding to the summands of the Anderson-Tymoczko formula. We construct an explicit toric degeneration inside $Fl(n)$ of $Z$ into Richardson varieties, whose moment map images coincide with the HHMP decomposition, thereby obtaining a new proof of the Anderson-Tymoczko formula.
Chern Classes of Tropical Manifolds
We extend the definitions of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) cycles of matroids to tropical manifolds. To do this, we provide an alternate description of CSM cycles of matroids which is invariant under integer affine transformations. Utilising results of Esterov and Katz-Stapledon, we prove correspondence theorems for the CSM classes of tropicalisations of subvarieties of toric varieties. We also provide an adjunction formula relating the CSM cycles of a tropical manifold and a codimension-one tropical submanifold. Lastly, we establish Noether's Formula for compact tropical surfaces with a Delzant face structure. This extends the class of surfaces for which the formula had been previously proved by the third author.

A note on transverse sets and bilinear varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ and $H$ be finite-dimensional vector spaces over $\mathbb{F}_p$. A subset $A \subseteq G \times H$ is said to be transverse if all of its rows $\{x \in G \colon (x,y) \in A\}$, $y \in H$, are subspaces of $G$ and all of its columns $\{y \in H \colon (x,y) \in A\}$, $x \in G$, are subspaces of $H$. As a corollary of a bilinear version of Bogolyubov argument, Gowers and the author proved that dense transverse sets contain bilinear varieties of bounded codimension. In this paper, we provide a direct combinatorial proof of this fact. In particular, we improve the bounds and evade the use of Fourier analysis and Freiman's theorem and its variants.
