Moduli spaces of quantum toric stacks and their compactification
A toric variety is a normal complex variety which is completely described by combinatorial data, namely by a fan of strongly convex rational (with respect to a lattice) cones. Due to this rationality condition, toric varieties are (equivariantly) rigid since a deformation of the lattice can make it dense. A solution to this problem consists in considering quantum toric stacks. The latter is a stacky generalization of toric varieties where the "lattice" is replaced by a finitely generated subgroup of $\mathbb{R}^d$ (in the simplicial case as introduced by L. Katzarkov, E. Lupercio, L. Meersseman and A. Verjovsky). The goal of this paper is to explain the moduli spaces of quantum toric stacks and their compactification.
Partitioning problems via random processes
There are a number of well-known problems and conjectures about partitioning graphs to satisfy local constraints. For example, the majority colouring conjecture of Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen and Wood states that every directed graph has a 3-colouring such that for every vertex $v$, at most half of the out-neighbours of $v$ have the same colour as $v$. As another example, the internal partition conjecture, due to DeVos and to Ban and Linial, states that for every $d$, all but finitely many $d$-regular graphs have a partition into two nonempty parts such that for every vertex $v$, at least half of the neighbours of $v$ lie in the same part as $v$. We prove several results in this spirit: in particular, two of our results are that the majority colouring conjecture holds for Erdős-Rényi random directed graphs (of any density), and that the internal partition conjecture holds if we permit a tiny number of "exceptional vertices". Our proofs involve a variety of techniques, including several different methods to analyse random recolouring processes. One highlight is a "personality-changing" scheme: we "forget" certain information based on the state of a Markov chain, giving us more independence to work with.

K-classes of delta-matroids and equivariant localization
Delta-matroids are "type B" generalizations of matroids in the same way that maximal orthogonal Grassmannians are generalizations of Grassmannians. A delta-matroid analogue of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid is the interlace polynomial. We give a geometric interpretation for the interlace polynomial via the K-theory of maximal orthogonal Grassmannians. To do so, we develop a new Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch-type formula for the type B permutohedral variety.

Cocharge and skewing formulas for $Δ$-Springer modules and the Delta Conjecture
We prove that $ωΔ'_{e_{k}}e_n|_{t=0}$, the symmetric function in the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$, is a skewing operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial, and generalize this formula to the Frobenius series of all $Δ$-Springer modules. We use this to give an explicit Schur expansion in terms of the Lascoux-Schützenberger cocharge statistic on a new combinatorial object that we call a \textit{battery-powered tableau}. Our proof is geometric, and shows that the $Δ$-Springer varieties of Levinson, Woo, and the second author are generalized Springer fibers coming from the partial resolutions of the nilpotent cone due to Borho and MacPherson. We also give alternative combinatorial proofs of our Schur expansion for several special cases, and give conjectural skewing formulas for the $t$ and $t^2$ coefficients of $ωΔ'_{e_{k}}e_n$.

Geometry of the twin manifolds of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and unicellular LLT polynomials
Recently, Masuda-Sato and Precup-Sommers independently proved an LLT version of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture which says that the Frobenius characteristics of the cohomology of the twin manifolds of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are unicellular LLT polynomials. The purpose of this paper is to study the geometry of twin manifolds and we prove that they are related by explicit blowups and fiber bundle maps. Upon taking their cohomology, we obtain a direct proof of the modular law which establishes the LLT Shareshian-Wachs conjecture.

Combinatorics of semi-toric degenerations of Schubert varieties in type C
An approach to Schubert calculus is to realize Schubert classes as concrete combinatorial objects such as Schubert polynomials. Using the polytope ring of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin realized each Schubert class as a sum of reduced Kogan faces. The first named author introduced a generalization of reduced Kogan faces to symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes using a semi-toric degeneration of a Schubert variety, and extended the result of Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin to type C case. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial model to this type C generalization using a kind of pipe dream with self-crossings. As an application, we prove that the type C generalization can be constructed by skew mitosis operators.

Matroid Products in Tropical Geometry
Symmetric powers of matroids were first introduced by Lovasz and Mason in the 1970s, where it was shown that not all matroids admit higher symmetric powers. Since these initial findings, the study of matroid symmetric powers has remained largely unexplored. In this paper, we establish an equivalence between valuated matroids with arbitrarily large symmetric powers and tropical linear spaces that appear as the variety of a tropical ideal. In establishing this equivalence, we additionally show that all tropical linear spaces are connected through codimension one. These results provide additional geometric and algebraic connections to the study of matroid symmetric powers, which we leverage to prove that the class of matroids with second symmetric power is minor closed and has infinitely many forbidden minors.
Positive del Pezzo Geometry
Real, complex, and tropical algebraic geometry join forces in a new branch of mathematical physics called positive geometry. We develop the positive geometry of del Pezzo surfaces and their moduli spaces, viewed as very affine varieties. Their connected components are derived from polyhedral spaces with Weyl group symmetries. We study their canonical forms and scattering amplitudes, and we solve the likelihood equations.

On combinatorics of string polytopes in types $B$ and $C$
A string polytope is a rational convex polytope whose lattice points parametrize a highest weight crystal basis, which is obtained from a string cone by explicit affine inequalities depending on a highest weight. It also inherits geometric information of a flag variety such as toric degenerations, Newton-Okounkov bodies, mirror symmetry, Schubert calculus, and so on. In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of string polytopes in types $B$ and $C$ by giving an explicit description of string cones in these types which is analogous to Gleizer-Postnikov's description of string cones in type $A$. As an application, we characterize string polytopes in type $C$ which are unimodularly equivalent to the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope in type $C$ for a specific highest weight.

Space of nilpotent orbits and extension of period maps (I): The weight 3 Calabi-Yau types
In Kato-Nakayama-Usui's theory, a certain space of nilpotent orbits can be constructed and serve as a completion of a given period map. This can be regarded as a generalization of Mumford's toroidal compactification for locally symmetric varieties. Kato-Nakayama-Usui's construction requires the existence of a weak fan, which is not known in general for non-classical cases. In this paper, we show after some slight modifications, such weak fans exist for a large class of period maps of weight 3 Calabi-Yau type. In particular, for these cases a Kato-Nakayama-Usui type completion can be constructed.

Forest polynomials and the class of the permutahedral variety
We study a basis of the polynomial ring that we call forest polynomials. This family of polynomials is indexed by a combinatorial structure called indexed forests and permits several definitions, one of which involves flagged P-partitions. As such, these polynomials have a positive expansion in the basis of slide polynomials. By a novel insertion procedure that may be viewed as a generalization of the Sylvester correspondence we establish that Schubert polynomials decompose positively in terms of forest polynomials. Our insertion procedure involves a correspondence on words which allows us to show that forest polynomials multiply positively. We proceed to show that forest polynomials are a particularly convenient basis in regards to studying the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo the ideal of positive degree quasisymmetric polynomials. This aspect allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative integral description for the Schubert class expansion of the cohomology class of the permutahedral variety in terms of a parking procedure. We study the associated combinatorics in depth and introduce a multivariate extension of mixed Eulerian numbers.

Matching Fields in Macaulay2
This article introduces the package MatchingFields for Macaulay2 and highlights some open problems. A matching field is a combinatorial object whose data encodes a candidate toric degeneration of a Grassmannian or partial flag variety of type A. Each coherent matching field is associated to a certain maximal cone of the respective tropical variety. The MatchingFields package provides methods to construct matching fields along with their rings, ideals, polyhedra and matroids. The package also supplies methods to test whether a matching field is coherent, linkage and gives rise to a toric degeneration.

On Permutation Trinomials of the type $X^{q^2-q+1}+AX^{q^2}+BX$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$
Necessary and sufficient conditions on $A,B\in \mathbb{F}_{q^3}^*$ for $f(X)=X^{q^2-q+1}+AX^{q^2}+BX$ being a permutation polynomial of $\mathbb{F}_{q^3}$ are investigated via a connection with algebraic varieties over finite fields.
Noncrossing Partition Lattices from Planar Configurations
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry (2024) • View PublicationBIB
The lattice of noncrossing partitions is well-known for its wide variety of combinatorial appearances and properties. For example, the lattice is rank-symmetric and enumerated by the Catalan numbers. In this article, we introduce a large family of new noncrossing partition lattices with both of these properties, each parametrized by a configuration of n points in the plane.
New Calabi-Yau Manifolds from Genetic Algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Calabi-Yau manifolds can be obtained as hypersurfaces in toric varieties built from reflexive polytopes. We generate reflexive polytopes in various dimensions using a genetic algorithm. As a proof of principle, we demonstrate that our algorithm reproduces the full set of reflexive polytopes in two and three dimensions, and in four dimensions with a small number of vertices and points. Motivated by this result, we construct five-dimensional reflexive polytopes with the lowest number of vertices and points. By calculating the normal form of the polytopes, we establish that many of these are not in existing datasets and therefore give rise to new Calabi-Yau four-folds. In some instances, the Hodge numbers we compute are new as well.

Matrix Schubert varieties, binomial ideals, and reduced Gröbner bases
We prove a sharp lower bound on the number of terms in an element of the reduced Gröbner basis of a Schubert determinantal ideal $I_w$ under the term order of [Knutson-Miller '05]. We give three applications. First, we give a pattern-avoidance characterization of the matrix Schubert varieties whose defining ideals are binomial. This complements a result of [Escobar-Mészáros '16] on matrix Schubert varieties that are toric with respect to their natural torus action. Second, we give a combinatorial proof that the recent formulas of [Rajchgot-Robichaux-Weigandt '23] and [Almousa-Dochtermann-Smith '22] computing the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of vexillary $I_w$ and toric edge ideals of bipartite graphs respectively agree for binomial $I_w$. Third, we demonstrate that the Gröbner basis for $I_w$ given by minimal generators [Gao-Yong '22] is reduced if and only if the defining permutation $w$ is vexillary.

Complete $(q+1)$-arcs in $\mathrm{PG}(2,\mathbb{F}_{q^6})$ from the Hermitian curve
We prove that, if $q$ is large enough, the set of the $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}$-rational points of the Hermitian curve is a complete $(q+1)$-arc in $\mathrm{PG}(2,\mathbb{F}_{q^6})$, addressing an open case from a recent paper by Korchmáros, Szőnyi and Nagy. An algebraic approach based on the investigation of some algebraic varieties attached to the arc is used.
The $q$-Analogue of Zero Forcing for Certain Families of Graphs
Zero forcing is a combinatorial game played on a graph with the ultimate goal of changing the colour of all the vertices at minimal cost. Originally this game was conceived as a one player game, but later a two-player version was devised in-conjunction with studies on the inertia of a graph, and has become known as the $q$-analogue of zero forcing. In this paper, we study and compute the $q$-analogue zero forcing number for various families of graphs. We begin with by considering a concept of contraction associated with trees. We then significantly generalize an equation between this $q$-analogue of zero forcing and a corresponding nullity parameter for all threshold graphs. We close by studying the $q$-analogue of zero forcing for certain Kneser graphs, and a variety of cartesian products of structured graphs.

Integral equivariant cohomology of affine Grassmannians
Published in Can. Math. Bull. 67 (2024) 727-741 • View PublicationBIB
We give explicit presentations of the integral equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannians and flag varieties in type A, arising from their natural embeddings in the corresponding infinite (Sato) Grassmannian and flag variety. These presentations are compared with results obtained by Lam and Shimozono, for rational equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, and by Larson, for the integral cohomology of the moduli stack of vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$.
