Identifiability of Points and Rigidity of Hypergraphs under Algebraic Constraints
The identifiability problem arises naturally in a number of contexts in mathematics and computer science. Specific instances include local or global rigidity of graphs and unique completability of partially-filled tensors subject to rank conditions. The identifiability of points on secant varieties has also been a topic of much research in algebraic geometry. It is often formulated as the problem of identifying a set of points satisfying a given set of algebraic relations. A key question then is to prove sufficient conditions for relations to guarantee the identifiability of the points. This paper proposes a new general framework for capturing the identifiability problem when a set of algebraic relations has a combinatorial structure and develops tools to analyse the impact of the underlying combinatorics on the local or global identifiability of points. Our framework is built on the language of graph rigidity, where the measurements are Euclidean distances between two points, but applicable in the generality of hypergraphs with arbitrary algebraic measurements. We establish necessary and sufficient (hyper)graph theoretical conditions for identifiability by exploiting techniques from graph rigidity theory and algebraic geometry of secant varieties. In particular our work analyses combinatorially the effect of non-generic projections of secant varieties.
Non-linear MRD codes from cones over exterior sets
By using the notion of $d$-embedding $Γ$ of a (canonical) subgeometry $Σ$ and of exterior set with respect to the $h$-secant variety $Ω_{h}(\mathcal{A})$ of a subset $\mathcal{A}$, $ 0 \leq h \leq n-1$, in the finite projective space $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$, $n \geq 3$, in this article we construct a class of non-linear $(n,n,q;d)$-MRD codes for any $ 2 \leq d \leq n-1$. A code $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ of this class, where $1\in T \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$ and $σ$ is a generator of $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}|\mathbb{F}_q)$, arises from a cone of $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,q^n)$ with vertex an $(n-d-2)$-dimensional subspace over a maximum exterior set $\mathcal{E}$ with respect to $Ω_{d-2}(Γ)$. We prove that the codes introduced in [Cossidente, A., Marino, G., Pavese, F.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 79, 597--609 (2016); Durante, N., Siciliano, A.: Non-linear maximum rank distance codes in the cyclic model for the field reduction of finite geometries. Electron. J. Comb. (2017); Donati, G., Durante, N.: A generalization of the normal rational curve in $\mathrm{PG}(d,q^n)$ and its associated non-linear MRD codes. Des. Codes Cryptogr. 86, 1175--1184 (2018)] are appropriate punctured ones of $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ and solve completely the inequivalence issue for this class showing that $\mathcal{C}_{σ,T}$ is neither equivalent nor adjointly equivalent to the non-linear MRD code $\mathcal{C}_{n,k,σ,I}$, $I \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q$, obtained in [Otal, K., Özbudak, F.: Some new non-additive maximum rank distance codes. Finite Fields and Their Applications 50, 293--303 (2018).].

Clones of pigmented words and realizations of special classes of monoids
Clones are generalizations of operads forming powerful instruments to describe varieties of algebras wherein repeating variables are allowed in their relations. They allow us in this way to realize and study a large range of algebraic structures. A functorial construction from the category of monoids to the category of clones is introduced. The obtained clones involve words on positive integers where letters are pigmented by elements of a monoid. By considering quotients of these structures, we construct a complete hierarchy of clones involving some families of combinatorial objects. This provides clone realizations of some known and some new special classes of monoids as among others the variety of left-regular bands, bounded semilattices, and regular band monoids.
Ladder determinantal varieties and their symbolic blowups
In this article we show that the symbolic Rees algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is strongly $F$-regular. Furthermore, we prove that the symbolic associated graded algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is $F$-pure. The latter implies that mixed ladder determinantal rings are $F$-pure. We also show that ideals of the poset of minors of a generic matrix give rise to $F$-pure algebras with straightening law.

Towards the horizons of Tits's vision -- on band schemes, crowds and F1-structures
Published in Innov. Incidence Geom. 20 (2023) 353-394 • View PublicationBIB
This text is dedicated to Jacques Tits's ideas on geometry over F1, the field with one element. In a first part, we explain how thin Tits geometries surface as rational point sets over the Krasner hyperfield, which links these ideas to combinatorial flag varieties in the sense of Borovik, Gelfand and White and F1-geometry in the sense of Connes and Consani. A completely novel feature is our approach to algebraic groups over F1 in terms of an alteration of the very concept of a group. In the second part, we study an incidence-geometrical counterpart of (epimorphisms to) thin Tits geometries; we introduce and classify all F1-structures on 3-dimensional projective spaces over finite fields. This extends recent work of Thas and Thas on epimorphisms of projective planes (and other rank 2 buildings) to thin planes.

A universal-algebra and combinatorial approach to the set-theoretic Yang-Baxter equation
We introduce a new variety of set-theoretic non-associative algebras, Płonka bi-magmas, to describe and classify all solutions of the set-theoretic Yang-Baxter (YB) equation of Baaj-Long-Skandalis (BLS) type. We also study new classes of YB-solutions (bi-connected, simple), and classify the BLS-solutions that fit into those classes. There are only countably many isomorphism classes of simple BLS-solutions, for instance, and they are all describable in terms of the odometer transformations familiar from ergodic theory. Placing Drinfel'd's problem of classifying the set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation in a universal-algebra context with a combinatorial flavor, we also prove the existence of adjunctions between various categories of solutions.

Addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials and $B$-sequences of hyperplane arrangements
We prove the addition-deletion theorems for the Solomon-Terao polynomials, which have two important specializations. Namely, one is to the characteristic polynomials of hyperplane arangements, and the other to the Poincarè polynomials of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties. One of the main tools to show them is the free surjection theorem which confirms the right exactness of several important exact sequences among logarithmic modules. Moreover, we introduce a generalized polynomial $B$-theory to the higher order logarithmic modules, whose origin was due to Terao.

Structural rigidity and flexibility using graphs of groups
In structural rigidity, one studies frameworks of bars and joints in Euclidean space. Such a framework is an articulated structure consisting of rigid bars, joined together at joints around which the bars may rotate. In this paper, we will describe articulated motions of realisations of hypergraphs that uses the terminology of graph of groups, and describe the motions of such a framework using group theory. Our approach allows to model a variety of situations, such as parallel redrawings, scenes, polytopes, realisations of graphs on surfaces, and even unique colourability of graphs. This approach allows a concise description of various dualities in rigidity theory. We also provide a lower bound on the dimension of the infinitesimal motions of such a framework in the special case when the underlying group is a Lie group.

Cyclotomic generating functions
It is a remarkable fact that for many statistics on finite sets of combinatorial objects, the roots of the corresponding generating function are each either a complex root of unity or zero. These and related polynomials have been studied for many years by a variety of authors from the fields of combinatorics, representation theory, probability, number theory, and commutative algebra. We call such polynomials \textbf{cyclotomic generating functions} (CGFs). With Konvalinka, we have studied the support and asymptotic distribution of the coefficients of several families of CGFs arising from tableau and forest combinatorics. In this paper, we survey general CGFs from algebraic, analytic, and asymptotic perspectives. We review some of the many known examples of CGFs in combinatorial representation theory; describe their coefficients, moments, cumulants, and characteristic functions; and give a variety of necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence arising from probability, commutative algebra, and invariant theory. As a sample result, we show that CGFs are ``generically'' asymptotically normal, generalizing a result of Diaconis on $q$-binomial coefficients using work of Hwang--Zacharovas. We include several open problems concerning CGFs.

Punctual Quot schemes and Cohen--Lenstra series of the cusp singularity
The Quot scheme of points $\mathrm{Quot}_{d,n}(X)$ on a variety $X$ over a field $k$ parametrizes quotient sheaves of $\mathcal{O}_X^{\oplus d}$ of zero-dimensional support and length $n$. It is a rank-$d$ generalization of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points. When $X$ is a reduced curve with only the cusp singularity $\{x^2=y^3\}$ and $d\geq 0$ is fixed, the generating series for the motives of $\mathrm{Quot}_{d,n}(X)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is studied via Gröbner bases, and shown to be rational. Moreover, the generating series is computed explicitly when $d\leq 3$. The computational results exhibit surprising patterns (despite the fact that the category of finite length coherent modules over a cusp is wild), which not only enable us to conjecture the exact form of the generating series for all $d$, but also suggest a general functional equation whose $d=1$ case is the classical functional equation of the motivic zeta function known for any Gorenstein curve. As another side of the story, Quot schemes are related to the Cohen--Lenstra series. The Cohen--Lenstra series encodes the count of "commuting matrix points'' (or equivalently, coherent modules of finite length) of a variety over a finite field, about which Huang formuated a "rationality'' conjecture for singular curves. We prove a general formula that expresses the Cohen--Lenstra series in terms of the motives of the (punctual) Quot schemes, which together with our main rationality theorem, provides positive evidence for Huang's conjecture for the cusp.

On MSR Subspace Families of Lines
A minimum storage regenerating (MSR) subspace family of $\mathbb{F}_q^{2m}$ is a set $\mathcal{S}$ of $m$-spaces in $\mathbb{F}_q^{2m}$ such that for any $m$-space $S$ in $\mathcal{S}$ there exists an element in $\mathrm{PGL}(2m, q)$ which maps $S$ to a complement and fixes $\mathcal{S} \setminus \{ S \}$ pointwise. We show that an MSR subspace family of $2$-spaces in $\mathbb{F}_q^4$ has at most size $6$ with equality if and only if it is a particular subset of a Segre variety. This implies that an $(n, n-2, 4)$-MSR code has $n \leq 9$.

Chain Tutte polynomials
The Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant are the universal deletion-contraction and valuative matroid and polymatroid invariants, respectively. There are only a handful of well known invariants (like the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials) between (in terms of fineness) the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. The aim of this study is to define a spectrum of generalized Tutte polynomials to fill the gap between the Tutte polynomial and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. These polynomials are built by taking repeated convolution products of universal Tutte characters studied by Dupont, Fink, and Moci and using the framework of Ardila and Sanchez for studying valuative invariants. We develop foundational aspects of these polynomials by showing they are valuative on generalized permutahedra and present a generalized deletion-contraction formula. We apply these results on chain Tutte polynomials to obtain formulas for the Möbius polynomial, the opposite characteristic polynomial, a generalized Möbius polynomial, Ford's expected codimension of a matroid variety, and Derksen's $\mathcal{G}$-invariant.

Applications of Homogeneous Fiber Bundles to the Schubert Varieties
This article explores the relationship between Schubert varieties and equivariant embeddings, using the framework of homogeneous fiber bundles over flag varieties. We show that the homogenous fiber bundles obtained from Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties are always toroidal. Furthermore, we identify the wonderful varieties among them. We give a short proof of a conjecture of Gao, Hodges, and Yong for deciding when a Schubert variety is spherical with respect to an action of a Levi subgroup. By using BP-decompositions, we obtain a characterization of the smooth spherical Schubert varieties. Among the other applications of our results are: 1) a characterization of the spherical Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties, 2) an alternative proof of the fact that, in type A, every singular Schubert variety of torus complexity 1 is a spherical Schubert variety, and 3) a proof of the fact that, for simply laced algebraic groups of adjoint type, every spherical $G$-Schubert variety is locally rigid, that is to say, the first cohomology of its tangent sheaf vanishes.

We prove a short, root-system uniform, combinatorial classification of Levi-spherical Schubert varieties for any generalized flag variety $G/B$ of finite Lie type. We apply this to the study of multiplicity-free decompositions of a Demazure module into irreducible representations of a Levi subgroup.

Invariants of Binomial Edge Ideals via Linear Programs
We associate to every graph a linear program for packings of vertex disjoint paths. We show that the optimal primal and dual values of the corresponding integer program are the binomial grade and height of the binomial edge ideal of the graph. We deduce from this a new combinatorial characterization of graphs of König type and use it to show that all trees are of König type. The log canonical threshold and the F-threshold are important invariants associated to the singularities of a variety in characteristic $0$ and characteristic $p$. We show that the optimal value of the linear program (computed over the rationals) agrees with both the F-threshold and the log canonical threshold of the binomial edge ideal if the graph is a block graph or of König type. We conjecture that this linear program computes the log canonical threshold of the binomial edge ideal of any graph. Our results resemble theorems on monomial ideals arising from hypergraphs due to Howald and others.

Fast Evaluation of Generalized Todd Polynomials: Applications to MacMahon's Partition Analysis and Integer Programming
The Todd polynomials, denoted as $td_k(b_1,b_2,\ldots,b_m)$, are characterised by their generating functions: $$\sum_{k\ge 0} td_k s^k = \prod_{i=1}^m \frac{b_i s}{e^{b_i s}-1}.$$ These polynomials serve as fundamental components in the Todd class of toric varieties, a concept of significant relevance in the study of lattice polytopes and number theory. We identify that generalised Todd polynomials emerge naturally within the framework of MacMahon's partition analysis, particularly in the context of computing Ehrhart series. We introduce an efficient method for the evaluation of generalised Todd polynomials for numerical values of $b_i$. This is achieved through the development of expedited operations in the quotient ring $\mathbb{Z}_p[[s]]$ modulo $s^{d}$, where $p$ is a large prime. The practical implications of our work are demonstrated through two applications: firstly, we facilitate a recalculated resolution of the Ehrhart series for magic squares of order 6, a problem initially addressed by the first author, reducing computation time from 70 days to approximately 1 day; secondly, we present a polynomial-time algorithm for Integer Linear Programming when the dimension is fixed, exhibiting a notable enhancement in computational efficiency.

Lorentzian fans
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of Lorentzian fans, which form a special class of tropical fans that are particularly well-suited for proving Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities. To demonstrate the utility of Lorentzian fans, we prove a practical characterization of them in terms of their two-dimensional star fans. We also show that Lorentzian fans are closed under many common tropical fan operations, and we discuss how the Lorentzian property descends to the underlying tropical variety, allowing us to deduce Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequalities in the general setting of tropical intersection theory on tropical fan varieties.
Fractional eternal domination: securely distributing resources across a network
This paper initiates the study of fractional eternal domination in graphs, a natural relaxation of the well-studied eternal domination problem. We study the connections to flows and linear programming in order to obtain results on the complexity of determining the fractional eternal domination number of a graph $G$, which we denote $γ_{\,\textit{f}}^{\infty}(G)$. We study the behaviour of $γ_{\,\textit{f}}^{\infty}(G)$ as it relates to other domination parameters. We also determine bounds on, and in some cases exact values for, $γ_{\,\textit{f}}^{\infty}(G)$ when $G$ is a member of one of a variety of important graph classes, including trees, split graphs, strongly chordal graphs, Kneser graphs, abelian Cayley graphs, and graph products.

James reduced product schemes and double quasisymmetric functions
Symmetric function theory is a key ingredient in the Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Quasisymmetric functions are analogues that are similarly central to algebraic combinatorics, but for which the associated geometry is poorly developed. Baker and Richter (2008) showed that $\textrm{QSym}$ manifests topologically as the cohomology ring of the loop suspension of infinite projective space or equivalently of its combinatorial homotopy model, the James reduced product $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. In recent work, we used this viewpoint to develop topologically-motivated bases of $\textrm{QSym}$ and initiate a Schubert calculus for $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$ in both cohomology and $K$-theory. Here, we study the torus-equivariant cohomology of $J\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^\infty$. We identify a cellular basis and introduce double monomial quasisymmetric functions as combinatorial representatives, analogous to the factorial Schur functions and double Schubert polynomials of classical Schubert calculus. We also provide a combinatorial Littlewood--Richardson rule for the structure coefficients of this basis. Furthermore, we introduce an algebro-geometric analogue of the James reduced product construction. In particular, we prove that the James reduced product of a complex projective variety also carries the structure of a projective variety.
