Hamilton cycles in pseudorandom graphs
Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $λ(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $λ(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Richardson varieties, projected Richardson varieties and positroid varieties
This is a survey article on Richardson varieties and their combinatorics. A Richardson variety is the intersection, inside the flag manifold GL_n/B_+, of a Schubert cell (B_- u B_+)/B_+ and an opposite Schubert cell (B_+ w B_+)/B_+ (or the similar intersection of Schubert varieties). In this survey, we provide an overview of what is known about (1) homogeneous coordinate rings of Richardson varieties, their bases and degenerations (2) parametrizations of Richardson varieties using Bott-Samelson varieties (3) Deodhar's decompositions of the flag manifold and of Richardson varieties within it and (4) total positivity in the flag manifold. We also provide an overview of the combinatorics of positroid varieties, their relations to Richardson varieties, and how they are parametrized using plabic graphs. Most of this survey is an overview of other authors' work over the last forty years, but there are also some minor original results: For example, that coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties are UFD's (Corollary 3.23), that the Deodhar decomposition is not a stratification in Lie type A (Section 4.3) and explicit descriptions of the Deodhar decomposition in terms of ranks of submatrices (Section 4.4).

The Prym variety of a dilated double cover of metric graphs
We calculate the volume of the tropical Prym variety of a harmonic double cover of metric graphs having non-trivial dilation. We show that the tropical Prym variety behaves discontinuously under deformations of the double cover that change the number of connected components of the dilation subgraph.

Moduli spaces of Delzant polytopes and symplectic toric manifolds
Published in Advances in Mathematics 482, Part B, December 2025, 110624 • View PublicationBIB
This paper introduces modern geometric combinatorial technology from the theory of triangulations in order to derive results in toric symplectic geometry. In the main part of the paper we prove a number of properties of the space $\mathcal{D}(n)$ of $n$-dimensional Delzant polytopes. Two highlights are the construction of examples showing that, in contrast with the classical work of Oda in dimension $2$, no classification of combinatorially minimal Delzant polytopes can be expected in dimension $3$ or higher, and a proof that the space of $n$-dimensional Delzant polytopes is path-connected. Our proof of the latter is based on the fact that every rational fan can be refined to a unimodular fan, which is a standard technique used for resolution of singularities of toric varieties. In the last part of the paper, using the Delzant correspondence, these results allow us to answer several open questions concerning the moduli space $\mathcal{M}(n)$ of symplectic toric manifolds of dimension $2n$, since this space is isometric to the space of Delzant polytopes. Our results imply that no classification of minimal models of symplectic toric manifolds is plausible in dimension $6$ or higher, which answers in the negative a long-standing folklore question originating in Oda's work (1978).

On the geometry of the Hermitian Veronese curve and its quasi-Hermitian surfaces
The complete classification of the orbits on subspaces under the action of the projective stabiliser of (classical) algebraic varieties is a challenging task, and few classifications are complete. We focus on a particular action of $\PGL(2,q^2)$ (and $\PSL(2,q^2)$) arising from the Hermitian Veronese curve in $\PG(3, q^2)$, a maximal rational curve embedded on a smooth Hermitian surface with some fascinating properties. The study of its orbits leads to a new construction of quasi-Hermitian surfaces: sets of points with the same combinatorial and geometric properties as a non-degenerate Hermitian surface.

Signal Propagation in Double Edged Relays
A discrete signal propagation model blending characteristics of linear wave propagation and finite state automata is developed. We show this model obeys a limited form of superposition and is capable of displaying a wide variety of interesting behaviors. We show how the model's superposition properties permit information to be encoded and retained by signals that pass through discrete networks. We outline a SPIDER model replacement for Dijkstra's algorithm.

Strong equivariant positivity for homogeneous varieties and back-stable coproduct coefficients
Using a transversality argument, we demonstrate the positivity of certain coefficients in the equivariant cohomology and K-theory of a generalized flag manifold. This strengthens earlier equivariant positivity theorems (of Graham and Anderson-Griffeth-Miller) by further constraining the roots which can appear in these coefficients. As an application, we deduce that structure constants for comultiplication in the equivariant K-theory of an infinite flag manifold exhibit an unusual positivity property, establishing conjectures of Lam-Lee-Shimozono. Along the way, we present alternative formulas for the back stable Grothendieck polynomials defined by those authors, as well as a new method for computing the coproduct coefficients.

The Isomorphism Problem for cominuscule Schubert Varieties
Published in Selecta Mathematica (2024) • View PublicationBIB
Cominuscule flag varieties generalize Grassmannians to other Lie types. Schubert varieties in cominuscule flag varieties are indexed by posets of roots labeled long/short. These labeled posets generalize Young diagrams. We prove that Schubert varieties in potentially different cominuscule flag varieties are isomorphic as varieties if and only if their corresponding labeled posets are isomorphic, generalizing the classification of Grassmannian Schubert varieties using Young diagrams by the last two authors. Our proof is type-independent.

The excedance quotient of the Bruhat order, Quasisymmetric Varieties and Temperley-Lieb algebras
Published in J. of London Math Soc. {\bf 110--4} (2024) e13007 • View PublicationBIB
Let $R_n=\mathbb{Q}[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]$ be the ring of polynomial in $n$ variables and consider the ideal $\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+}\rangle\subseteq R_n$ generated by quasisymmetric polynomials without constant term. It was shown by J.~C.~Aval, F.~Bergeron and N.~Bergeron that $\dim\big(R_n\big/\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+} \rangle\big)=C_n$ the $n$th Catalan number. In the present work, we explain this phenomenon by defining a set of permutations $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ with the following properties: first, $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ is a basis of the Temperley--Lieb algebra $\mathsf{TL}_{n}(2)$, and second, when considering $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ as a collection of points in $\mathbb{Q}^{n}$, the top-degree homogeneous component of the vanishing ideal $\mathbf{I}(\mathrm{QSV}_{n})$ is $\langle \mathrm{QSym}_{n}^{+}\rangle$. Our construction has a few byproducts which are independently noteworthy. We define an equivalence relation $\sim$ on the symmetric group $S_{n}$ using weak excedances and show that its equivalence classes are naturally indexed by noncrossing partitions. Each equivalence class is an interval in the Bruhat order between an element of $\mathrm{QSV}_{n}$ and a $321$-avoiding permutation. Furthermore, the Bruhat order induces a well-defined order on $S_{n}\big/\!\!\sim$. Finally, we show that any section of the quotient $S_{n}\big/\!\!\sim$ gives an (often novel) basis for $\mathsf{TL}_{n}(2)$.

Positivity for partial tropical flag varieties
We study positivity notions for the tropicalization of type A flag varieties and the flag Dressian. We focus on the hollow case, where we have one constituent of rank 1 and another of corank 1. We characterize the three different notions that exist for this case in terms of Plücker coordinates. These notions are the tropicalization of the totally non-negative flag variety, Bruhat subdivisions and the non-negative flag Dressian. We show the first example where the first two concepts above do not coincide. In this case the non-negative flag Dressian equals the tropicalization of the Plücker non-negative flag variety and is equivalent to flag positroid subdivisions. Using these characterizations, we provide similar conditions on the Plücker coordinates for flag varieties of arbitrary rank that are necessary for each of these positivity notions, and conjecture them to be sufficient. In particular we show that regular flag positroid subdivisions always come from the non-negative Dressian. Along the way, we show that the set of Bruhat interval polytopes equals the set of twisted Bruhat interval polytopes and we introduce valuated flag gammoids.

Multislant matrices and Jacobi--Trudi determinants over finite fields
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications 91, October 2023, 102262 • View PublicationBIB
The problem of counting the $\mathbb{F}_q$-valued points of a variety has been well-studied from algebro-geometric, topological, and combinatorial perspectives. We explore a combinatorially flavored version of this problem studied by Anzis et al. (2018), which is similar to work of Kontsevich, Elkies, and Haglund. Anzis et al. considered the question: what is the probability that the determinant of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix vanishes if the variables are chosen uniformly at random from a finite field? They gave a formula for various partitions such as hooks, staircases, and rectangles. We give a formula for partitions whose parts form an arithmetic progression, verifying and generalizing one of their conjectures. More generally, we compute the probability of the determinant vanishing for a class of matrices (``multislant matrices'') made of Toeplitz blocks with certain properties. We furthermore show that the determinant of a skew Jacobi-Trudi matrix is equidistributed across the finite field if the skew partition is a ribbon.

Coordinate rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in the open opposite Schubert cell
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e44 • View PublicationBIB
Dale Peterson has discovered a surprising result that the quantum cohomology ring of the flag variety $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})/B$ is isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the intersection of the Peterson variety $\mbox{Pet}_n$ and the opposite Schubert cell associated with the identity element $Ω_e^\circ$ in $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})/B$. This is an unpublished result, so papers of Kostant and Rietsch are referred for this result. An explicit presentation of the quantum cohomology ring of $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})/B$ is given by Ciocan-Fontanine and Givental-Kim. In this paper we introduce further quantizations of their presentation so that they reflect the coordinate rings of the intersections of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties $\mbox{Hess}(N,h)$ and $Ω_e^\circ$ in $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})/B$. In other words, we generalize the Peterson's statement to regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties via the presentation given by Ciocan-Fontanine and Givental-Kim. As an application of our theorem, we show that the singular locus of the intersection of some regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mbox{Hess}(N,h_m)$ and $Ω_e^\circ$ is the intersection of certain Schubert variety and $Ω_e^\circ$ where $h_m=(m,n,\ldots,n)$ for $1<m<n$. We also see that $\mbox{Hess}(N,h_2) \cap Ω_e^\circ$ is related with the cyclic quotient singularity.

Key and Lascoux polynomials for symmetric orbit closures
We introduce shifted analogues of key polynomials related to symplectic and orthogonal orbit closures in the complete flag variety. Our definitions are given by applying isobaric divided difference operators to the analogues of Schubert polynomials for orbit closures that correspond to dominant involutions. We show that our shifted key polynomials are linear combinations of key polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients. We also prove that they are partial versions of the classical Schur $P$- and $Q$-polynomials. Finally, we examine $K$-theoretic generalizations of these functions, which give shifted forms of Lascoux polynomials. In the symplectic case, these generalizations are partial versions of the $GP$-polynomials introduced by Ikeda and Naruse. Besides developing basic properties, we identify a number of conjectures and open problems.

Generalized juggling patterns, quiver Grassmannians and affine flag varieties
The goal of this paper is to clarify the connection between certain structures from the theory of totally nonnegative Grassmannians, quiver Grassmannians for cyclic quivers and the theory of local models of Shimura varieties. More precisely, we generalize the construction from our previous paper relating the combinatorics and geometry of quiver Grassmanians to that of the totally nonnegative Grassmannians. The varieties we are interested in serve as realizations of local models of Shimura varieties. We exploit quiver representation techniques to study the quiver Grassmannians of interest and, in particular, to describe explicitly embeddings into affine flag varieties which allow us to realize our quiver Grassmannians as a union of Schubert varieties therein.

On torus quotients of Schubert varieties in orthogonal Grassmannian-II
Let $G=SO(8n+4,\mathbb{C})$ ($n\ge 1$). Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $P (\supset B)$ denote the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_{4n+2}$. In this article, we prove projective normality of the GIT quotients of certain Schubert varieties in the orthogonal Grassmannian $G/P$ with respect to the descent of a suitable $T$-linearized very ample line bundle.

Hecke algebra action on twisted motivic Chern classes and K-theoretic stable envelopes
Let $G$ be a linear semisimple algebraic group and $B$ its Borel subgroup. Let $\mathbb{T}\subset B$ be the maximal torus. We study the inductive construction of Bott-Samelson varieties to obtain recursive formulas for the twisted motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in $G/B$. To this end we introduce two families of operators acting on the equivariant K-theory $K_\mathbb{T}(G/B)[y]$, the right and left Demazure-Lusztig operators depending on a parameter. The twisted motivic Chern classes coincide (up to normalization) with the K-theoretic stable envelopes. Our results imply wall-crossing formulas for a change of the weight chamber and slope parameters. The right and left operators generate a twisted double Hecke algebra. We show that in the type $A$ this algebra acts on the Laurent polynomials. This action is a natural lift of the action on $K_\mathbb{T}(G/B)[y]$ with respect to the Kirwan map. We show that the left and right twisted Demazure-Lusztig operators provide a recursion for twisted motivic Chern classes of matrix Schubert varieties.

The quotient set of the quadratic distance set over finite fields
Let $\mathbb F_q^d$ be the $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$ with $q$ elements. For each non-zero $r$ in $\mathbb F_q$ and $E\subset \mathbb F_q^d$, we define $W(r)$ as the number of quadruples $(x,y,z,w)\in E^4$ such that $ Q(x-y)/Q(z-w)=r,$ where $Q$ is a non-degenerate quadratic form in $d$ variables over $\mathbb F_q.$ When $Q(α)=\sum_{i=1}^d α_i^2$ with $α=(α_1, \ldots, α_d)\in \mathbb F_q^d,$ Pham (2022) recently used the machinery of group actions and proved that if $E\subset \mathbb F_q^2$ with $q\equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ and $|E|\ge C q$, then we have $W(r)\ge c |E|^4/q$ for any non-zero square number $r \in \mathbb F_q,$ where $C$ is a sufficiently large constant, $ c$ is some number between $0$ and $1,$ and $|E|$ denotes the cardinality of the set $E.$ In this article, we improve and extend Pham's result in two dimensions to arbitrary dimensions with general non-degenerate quadratic distances. As a corollary of our results, we also generalize the sharp results on the Falconer type problem for the quotient set of distance set due to the first two authors and Parshall (2019). Furthermore, we provide improved constants for the size conditions of the underlying sets. The key new ingredient is to relate the estimate of the $W(r)$ to a quadratic homogeneous variety in $2d$-dimensional vector space. This approach is fruitful because it allows us to take advantage of Gauss sums which are more handleable than the Kloosterman sums appearing in the standard distance type problems.

Bracelets bases are theta bases
The skein algebra of a marked surface, possibly with punctures, admits the basis of (tagged) bracelet elements constructed by Fock-Goncharov and Musiker-Schiffler-Williams. As a cluster algebra, it also admits the theta basis of Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich, quantized by Davison-Mandel. We show that these two bases coincide (with a caveat for notched arcs in once-punctured tori). In unpunctured cases, one may consider the quantum skein algebra. We show that the quantized bases also coincide. Even for cases with punctures, we define quantum bracelets for the cluster algebras with coefficients, and we prove that these are again theta functions. On the corresponding cluster Poisson varieties (parameterizing framed $PGL_2$-local systems), we prove in general that the canonical coordinates of Fock-Goncharov, quantized by Bonahon-Wong and Allegretti-Kim, coincide with the associated (quantum) theta functions. Long-standing conjectures on strong positivity and atomicity follow as corollaries. Of potentially independent interest, we examine the behavior of cluster scattering diagrams under folding.
