On the full Kostant-Toda lattice and the flag varieties. I. The singular solutions
The full Kostant-Toda (f-KT) lattice is a natural generalization of the classical tridiagonal Toda lattice. We study singular structure of solutions of the f-KT lattices defined on simple Lie algebras in two different ways: through the $τ$-functions and through the Kowalevski-Painlevé analysis. The $τ$-function formalism relies on and is equivalent to the representation theory of the underlying Lie algebras, while the Kowalevski-Painlevé analysis is representation independent and we are able to characterize all the terms in the Laurent series solutions of the f-KT lattices via the structure theory of the Lie algebras. Through the above analysis we compactify the initial condition spaces of f-KT lattice by the corresponding flag varieties, that is fixing the spectral parameters which are invariant under the f-KT flows, we build a one to one correspondence between solutions of the f-KT lattices and points in the corresponding flag varieties. As all the important characters we obtain in the Kowalevski-Painlevé analysis are integral valued, results in this paper are valid in any field containing the rational field.

Quantum Grassmannians and their Associated Quantum Schubert Varieties at roots of unity
We study the PI degree of various quantum algebras at roots of unity, including quantum Grassmannians, quantum Schubert varieties, partition subalgebras, and their associated quantum affine spaces. By a theorem of De Concini and Procesi, the PI degree of partition subalgebras and their associated quantum affine spaces is controlled by skew-symmetric integral matrices associated to (Cauchon-Le) diagrams. We prove that the invariant factors of these matrices are always powers of 2. This allows us to compute explicitly the PI degree of partition subalgebras. Our results also apply to certain completely prime (homogeneous) quotients of partition subalgebras. In particular, our results allow us to extend results of Jakobsen and Jondrup regarding the PI degree of quantum determinantal rings at roots of unity [JJ01] and we present a method to construct an irreducible representation of maximal dimension for quantum determinantal ideals. Building on these results, we use the strong connection between partition subalgebras and quantum Schubert varieties through noncommutative dehomogenisation [LR08] to obtain expressions for the PI degree of quantum Schubert varieties. In particular, we compute the PI degree of quantum Grassmannians.

Nearly Toric Schubert Varieties of Type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
A notion of a nearly toric variety is introduced. The examples of nearly toric varieties in the context of Schubert varieties are discussed. In particular, combinatorial characterizations of the smooth and singular nearly toric Schubert varieties are found. Furthermore, the counts and generating series are determined. Additionally, a connection between Dyck paths and a certain family of nearly toric Schubert varieties is established.

On Seidel representation in quantum K-theory of Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a direct proof of Seidel representation in the quantum K-theory QK(Gr(k, n)) by studying projected Gromov-Witten varieties concretely. As applications, we give an alternative proof of the K-theoretic quantum Pieri rule by Buch and Mihalcea, reduce certain quantum Schubert structure constants of higher degree to classical Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for K(Gr(k, n)), and provide a quantum Littlewood-Richardson rule for QK(Gr(3, n)).

Ehrhart Limits
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the definition of an Ehrhart limit, that is, a formal power series with integer coefficients that is the limit in the ring of formal power series of a sequence of Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials. We identify a variety of examples of sequences of polytopes that yield Ehrhart limits, with a focus on reflexive polytopes and simplices.

Central Limit Theorems via Analytic Combinatorics in Several Variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
The field of analytic combinatorics is dedicated to the creation of effective techniques to study the large-scale behaviour of combinatorial objects. Although classical results in analytic combinatorics are mainly concerned with univariate generating functions, over the last two decades a theory of analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV) has been developed to study the asymptotic behaviour of multivariate sequences. In this work we survey ACSV from a probabilistic perspective, illustrating how its most advanced methods provide efficient algorithms to derive limit theorems, and comparing the results to past work deriving combinatorial limit theorems. Using the results of ACSV, we provide a SageMath package that can automatically compute (and rigorously verify) limit theorems for a large variety of combinatorial generating functions. To illustrate the techniques involved, we also establish explicit local central limit theorems for a family of combinatorial classes whose generating functions are linear in the variables tracking each parameter. Applications covered by this result include the distribution of cycles in certain restricted permutations (proving a limit theorem stated as a conjecture in recent work of Chung et al.), integer compositions, and $n$-colour compositions with varying restrictions and values tracked. Key to establishing these explicit results in arbitrary dimension is an interesting symbolic determinant, which we compute by conjecturing and then proving an appropriate $LU$-factorization. It is our hope that this work provides readers a blueprint to apply the powerful tools of ACSV to prove central limit theorems in their own work, making them more accessible to combinatorialists, probabilists, and those in adjacent fields.

Reconnectads
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 7 (2024) 801-842 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new operad-like structure that we call a reconnectad; the ``input'' of an element of a reconnectad is a finite simple graph, rather than a finite set, and ``compositions'' of elements are performed according to the notion of the reconnected complement of a subgraph. The prototypical example of a reconnectad is given by the collection of toric varieties of graph associahedra of Carr and Devadoss, with the structure operations given by inclusions of orbits closures. We develop the general theory of reconnectads, and use it to study the ``wonderful reconnectad'' assembled from homology groups of complex toric varieties of graph associahedra.

Incidence-free sets and edge domination in incidence graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set of edges $Γ$ of a graph $G$ is an edge dominating set if every edge of $G$ intersects at least one edge of $Γ$, and the edge domination number $γ_e(G)$ is the smallest size of an edge dominating set. Expanding on work of Laskar and Wallis, we study $γ_e(G)$ for graphs $G$ which are the incidence graph of some incidence structure $D$, with an emphasis on the case when $D$ is a symmetric design. In particular, we show in this latter case that determining $γ_e(G)$ is equivalent to determining the largest size of certain incidence-free sets of $D$. Throughout, we employ a variety of combinatorial, probabilistic and geometric techniques, supplemented with tools from spectral graph theory.

Row-Hamiltonian Latin squares and Falconer varieties
Published in Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 128 (2024), e12575 • View PublicationBIB
A \emph{Latin square} is a matrix of symbols such that each symbol occurs exactly once in each row and column. A Latin square $L$ is \emph{row-Hamiltonian} if the permutation induced by each pair of distinct rows of $L$ is a full cycle permutation. Row-Hamiltonian Latin squares are equivalent to perfect $1$-factorisations of complete bipartite graphs. For the first time, we exhibit a family of Latin squares that are row-Hamiltonian and also achieve precisely one of the related properties of being column-Hamiltonian or symbol-Hamiltonian. This family allows us to construct non-trivial, anti-associative, isotopically $L$-closed loop varieties, solving an open problem posed by Falconer in 1970.

Total positivity in twisted product of flag varieties
We show that the totally nonnegative part of the twisted product of flag varieties of a Kac-Moody group admits a cellular decomposition, and the closure of each cell is a topological manifold with boundary. We also establish explicit parameterizations of each totally positive cell. In the special cases of double flag varieties and braid varieties, we show that the totally nonnegative parts are regular CW complexes homeomorphic to closed balls. Moreover, we prove that the link of any totally nonnegative double Bruhat cell in a reductive group is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, solving an open problem of Fomin and Zelevinsky.

Immanant varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce immanant varieties, associated to simple characters of a finite group. They include well-studied classes of varieties, as Segre embeddings, Grassmannians and certain other classes of Chow varieties. For a one-dimensional character $χ$, we define $χ$-matroids by a maximality property. For trivial characters, by exploring the combinatorics of incidence stratifications, we provide a set of generators for the Chow vector spaces of the corresponding immanant varieties.

Bounds for the collapsibility number of a simplicial complex and non-cover complexes of hypergraphs
The collapsibility number of simplicial complexes was introduced by Wegner in order to understand the intersection patterns of convex sets. This number also plays an important role in a variety of Helly type results. We show that the non-cover complex of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is $|V(\mathcal{H)}|- γ_i(\mathcal{H})-1$-collapsible, where $γ_i(\mathcal{H})$ is the generalization of independence domination number of a graph to hypergraph. This extends the result of Choi, Kim and Park from graphs to hypergraphs. Moreover, the upper bound in terms of strong independence domination number given by Kim and Kim for the Leray number of the non-cover complex of a hypergraph can be obtained as a special case of our result. In general, there can be a large gap between the collapsibility number of a complex and its well-known upper bounds. In this article, we construct a sequence of upper bounds $\mathcal{M}_k(X)$ for the collapsibility number of a simplicial complex $X$, which lie in this gap. We also show that the bound given by $\mathcal{M}_k$ is tight if the underlying complex is $k$-vertex decomposable.
Sharp lower bounds for the number of maximum matchings in bipartite multigraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the minimum number of maximum matchings in a bipartite multigraph G with parts $X$ and $Y$ under various conditions, refining the well-known lower bound due to M. Hall. When $|X|=n$, every vertex in $X$ has degree at least $k$, and every vertex in $X$ has at least $r$ distinct neighbors, the minimum is $r!(k-r+1)$ when $n\ge r$ and is $[r+n(k-r)]\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}(r-i)$ when $n<r$. When every vertex has at least two neighbors and $|Y|-|X|=t\ge 0$, the minimum is $[(n-1)t+2+b](t+1)$, where $b=|E(G)|-2(n+t)$. We also determine the minimum number of maximum matchings in several other situations. We provide a variety of sharpness constructions.

Unique-Neighbor-Like Expansion and Group-Independent Cosystolic Expansion
In recent years, high dimensional expanders have been found to have a variety of applications in theoretical computer science, such as efficient CSPs approximations, improved sampling and list-decoding algorithms, and more. Within that, an important high dimensional expansion notion is \emph{cosystolic expansion}, which has found applications in the construction of efficiently decodable quantum codes and in proving lower bounds for CSPs. Cosystolic expansion is considered with systems of equations over a group where the variables and equations correspond to faces of the complex. Previous works that studied cosystolic expansion were tailored to the specific group $\mathbb{F}_2$. In particular, Kaufman, Kazhdan and Lubotzky (FOCS 2014), and Evra and Kaufman (STOC 2016) in their breakthrough works, who solved a famous open question of Gromov, have studied a notion which we term ``parity'' expansion for small sets. They showed that small sets of $k$-faces have proportionally many $(k+1)$-faces that contain \emph{an odd number} of $k$-faces from the set. Parity expansion for small sets could be used to imply cosystolic expansion only over $\mathbb{F}_2$. In this work we introduce a stronger \emph{unique-neighbor-like} expansion for small sets. We show that small sets of $k$-faces have proportionally many $(k+1)$-faces that contain \emph{exactly one} $k$-face from the set. This notion is fundamentally stronger than parity expansion and cannot be implied by previous works. We then show, utilizing the new unique-neighbor-like expansion notion introduced in this work, that cosystolic expansion can be made \emph{group-independent}, i.e., unique-neighbor-like expansion for small sets implies cosystolic expansion \emph{over any group}.

The Graph Density Domination Exponent
For graphs $G$ and $H$, what relations can be determined between $t(G,W)$ and $t(H,W)$ for a general graph $W$? We study this problem through the framework of the density domination exponent, which is defined to be the smallest constant $c$ such that $t(G,W)\ge t(H,W)^c$ for every graph $W$. This broad generalization encompasses the Sidorenko conjecture, the Erdős-Simonovits Theorem on paths, and a variety of other statements relating graph homomorphism densities. We introduce some general tools for estimating the density domination exponent, and extend previous results to new graph regimes.
Certified Severi dimensions for hyperelliptic and supersymmetric cusps
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a previous paper, the first three authors formulated a precise conjecture about the dimension of the {\it generalized Severi variety} $M^n_{d,g; {\rm S}, {\bf k}}$ of degree-$d$ holomorphic maps $\mathbb{P}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^n$ whose images' singularities are singleton cusps with value semigroups ${\rm S}$ and ramification profiles ${\bf k}$. In this paper, we prove that an adjusted form of the conjecture holds for generic profiles ${\bf k}$ associated with two distinguished (infinite) classes of semigroups ${\rm S}$.

Pieri and Murnaghan--Nakayama type Rules for Chern classes of Schubert Cells

We develop Pieri type as well as Murnaghan--Nakayama type formulas for equivariant Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes of Schubert cells in the classical flag variety. These formulas include as special cases many previously known multiplication formulas for Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes or Schubert classes. We apply the equivariant Murnaghan--Nakayama formula to the enumeration of rim hook tableaux.

A unipotent realization of the chromatic quasisymmetric function
Published in Alg. Number Th. 18 (2024) 1737-1766 • View PublicationBIB
This paper realizes of two families of combinatorial symmetric functions via the complex character theory of the finite general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$: chromatic quasisymmetric functions and vertical strip LLT polynomials. The associated $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ characters are elementary in nature and can be obtained by induction from certain well-behaved characters of the unipotent upper triangular groups $\mathrm{UT}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$. The proof of these results also gives a general Hopf algebraic approach to computing the induction map. Additional results include a connection between the relevant $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ characters and Hessenberg varieties and a re-interpretation of known theorems and conjectures about the relevant symmetric functions in terms of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$.

A generalization to networks of Young's characterization of the Borda rule
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that, for any given set of networks satisfying suitable conditions, the net-oudegree network solution, the net-indegree network solution, and the total network solution are the unique network solutions on that set satisfying neutrality, consistency and cancellation. The generality of the result obtained allows to get an analogous result for social choice correspondences: for any given set of preference profiles satisfying suitable conditions, the net-oudegree social choice correspondence, the net-indegree social choice correspondence and the total social choice correspondence are the unique social choice correspondences on that set satisfying neutrality, consistency and cancellation. Using the notable fact that several well-known voting rules coincide with the restriction of net-oudegree social choice correspondence to appropriate sets of preference profiles, we are able to deduce a variety of new and known characterization theorems for the Borda rule, the Partial Borda rule, the Averaged Borda rule, the Approval Voting, the Plurality rule and the anti-Plurality rule, among which Young's characterization of the Borda rule and Fishburn's characterization of the Approval Voting.

Decomposition of Probability Marginals for Security Games in Max-Flow/Min-Cut Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a set system $(E, \mathcal{P})$ with $ρ\in [0, 1]^E$ and $π\in [0,1]^{ \mathcal{P}}$, our goal is to find a probability distribution for a random set $S \subseteq E$ such that $\operatorname{Pr}[e \in S] = ρ_e$ for all $e \in E$ and $\operatorname{Pr}[P \cap S \neq \emptyset] \geq π_P$ for all $P \in \mathcal{P}$. We extend the results of Dahan, Amin, and Jaillet (MOR 2022) who studied this problem motivated by a security game in a directed acyclic graph (DAG). We focus on the setting where $π$ is of the affine form $π_P = 1 - \sum_{e \in P} μ_e$ for $μ\in [0, 1]^E$. A necessary condition for the existence of the desired distribution is that $\sum_{e \in P} ρ_e \geq π_P$ for all $P \in \mathcal{P}$. We show that this condition is sufficient if and only if $\mathcal{P}$ has the weak max-flow/min-cut property. We further provide an efficient combinatorial algorithm for computing the corresponding distribution in the special case where $(E, \mathcal{P})$ is an abstract network. As a consequence, equilibria for the security game by Dahan et al. can be efficiently computed in a wide variety of settings (including arbitrary digraphs). As a subroutine of our algorithm, we provide a combinatorial algorithm for computing shortest paths in abstract networks, partially answering an open question by McCormick (SODA 1996). We further show that a conservation law proposed by Dahan et al. for the requirement vector $π$ in DAGs can be reduced to the setting of affine requirements described above.
