A minimal presentation of the cohomology ring of the flag manifold $GL_n/B$ was given in [A. Borel, 1953]. This presentation was extended by [E. Akyildiz-A. Lascoux-P. Pragacz, 1992] to a non-minimal one for all Schubert varieties. Work of [Gasharov-Reiner, 2002] gave a short, i.e. polynomial-size, presentation for a subclass of Schubert varieties that includes the smooth ones. In [V. Reiner-A. Woo-A. Yong, 2011], a general shortening was found; it implies an exponential upper bound of $2^n$ on the number of generators required. That work states a minimality conjecture whose significance would be an exponential lower bound of $\sqrt{2}^{n+2}/\sqrt{πn}$ on the number of generators needed in worst case, giving the first obstructions to short presentations. We prove the minimality conjecture. Our proof uses the Hopf algebra structure of the ring of symmetric functions.

Rhoades defined a skein action of the symmetric group on noncrossing set partitions which generalized an action of the symmetric group on matchings. The $\mathfrak{S}_n$-action on matchings is made possible via the Ptolemy relation, while the action on set partitions is defined in terms of a set of skein relations that generalize the Ptolemy relation. The skein action on noncrossing set partitions has seen applications to coinvariant theory and coordinate rings of partial flag varieties. In this paper, we will show how Rhoades' $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module can be embedded into the $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module generated by matchings, thereby explaining how Rhoades' generalized skein relations all arise from the Ptolemy relation.
Discrete Morse theory for symmetric Delta-complexes
We generalize Forman's discrete Morse theory to the context of symmetric $Δ$-complexes. As an application, we prove that the coloop subcomplex of the link of the origin $LA^{\mathrm{trop},\mathrm{P}}_g$ in the moduli space of principally polarized tropical abelian varieties of dimension $g$ with respect to the perfect cone decomposition is contractible.

Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements, also known as matroid Schubert varieties, play an essential role in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson conjecture and in Kazhdan-Lusztig theory for matroids. We study these varieties as equivariant compactifications of affine spaces, and give necessary and sufficient conditions to characterize them. We also generalize the theory to include partial compactifications and morphisms between them. Our results resemble the correspondence between toric varieties and polyhedral fans.

The present paper is a continuation of \cite{jrz} and is devoted to the study of limit varieties of additively idempotent semirings. A limit variety is a nonfinitely based variety whose proper subvarieties are all finitely based. We present concrete constructions for one infinite family of limit additively idempotent semiring varieties, and one further ad hoc example. Each of these examples can be generated by a finite flat semiring, with the infinite family arising by a way of a complete characterisation of limit varieties that can be generated by the flat extension of a finite group. We also demonstrate the existence of other examples of limit varieties of additively idempotent semirings, including one further continuum-sized family, each with no finite generator, and two further ad hoc examples. While an explicit description of these latter examples is not given, one of the examples is proved to contain only trivial flat semirings.

Introduced by Kodama and Williams, Bruhat interval polytopes are generalized permutohedra closely connected to the study of torus orbit closures and total positivity in Schubert varieties. We show that the 1-skeleton posets of these polytopes are lattices and classify when the polytopes are simple, thereby resolving open problems and conjectures of Fraser, of Lee--Masuda, and of Lee--Masuda--Park. In particular, we classify when generic torus orbit closures in Schubert varieties are smooth.

We introduce generalized Hessenberg varieties and establish basic facts. We show that the Tymoczko action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology of Hessenberg varieties extends to generalized Hessenberg varieties and that natural morphisms among them preserve the action. By analyzing natural morphisms and birational maps among generalized Hessenberg varieties, we give an elementary proof of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture. Moreover we present a natural generalization of the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture that involves generalized Hessenberg varieties and provide an elementary proof. As a byproduct, we propose a generalized Stanley-Stembridge conjecture for weighted graphs. Our investigation into the birational geometry of generalized Hessenberg varieties enables us to modify them into much simpler varieties like projective spaces or permutohedral varieties by explicit sequences of blowups or projective bundle maps. Using this, we provide two algorithms to compute the $S_n$-representations on the cohomology of generalized Hessenberg varieties. As an application, we compute representations on the low degree cohomology of some Hessenberg varieties.

Since the 1974 paper by Peskine and Szpiro, liaison theory via complete intersections, and more generally via Gorenstein varieties, has become a standard tool kit in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, allowing to compare algebraic features of linked varieties. In this paper we develop a liaison theory via quasi-Gorenstein varieties, a much broader class than Gorenstein varieties: it is not misleading to think that quasi-Gorenstein rings are to Gorenstein rings as manifolds are to spheres. As applications, we derive a connectedness property of quasi-Gorenstein subspace arrangements generalizing previous results by Benedetti and the second author, and we deduce the classical topological Lefschetz duality via the Stanley-Reisner correspondence.

An arc space of an affine cone over a projective toric variety is known to be non-reduced in general. It was demonstrated recently that the reduced scheme structure is worth studying due to various connections with representation theory and combinatorics. In this paper we develop a general machinery for the description of the reduced arc spaces of affine cones over toric varieties. We apply our techniques to a number of classical cases and explore some connections with representation theory of current algebras.

Symmetric strongly shifted ideals are a class of monomial ideals which come equipped with an action of the symmetric group and are analogous to the well-studied class of strongly stable monomial ideals. In this paper we focus on algebraic and combinatorial properties of symmetric strongly shifted ideals. On the algebraic side, we elucidate properties that pertain to behavior under ideal operations, primary decomposition, and the structure of their Rees algebra. On the combinatorial side, we develop a notion of partition Borel generators which leads to connections to discrete polymatroids, convex polytopes, and permutohedral toric varieties.
Totally Nonnegative Tropical Flags and the Totally Nonnegative Flag Dressian
We study the totally nonnegative part of the complete flag variety and of its tropicalization. We show that Lusztig's notion of nonnegative complete flag variety coincides with the flags in the complete flag variety which have nonnegative Pl{ü}cker coordinates. This mirrors the characterization of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian as those points in the Grassmannian whose Pl{ü}cker coordinates are all nonnegative. We then study the tropical complete flag variety and complete flag Dressian, which are two tropical versions of the complete flag variety, capturing realizable and abstract flags of tropical linear spaces, respectively. In general, the complete flag Dressian properly contains the tropical complete flag variety. However, we show that the totally nonnegative parts of these spaces coincide.

A flag positroid of ranks $\boldsymbol{r}:=(r_1<\dots <r_k)$ on $[n]$ is a flag matroid that can be realized by a real $r_k \times n$ matrix $A$ such that the $r_i \times r_i$ minors of $A$ involving rows $1,2,\dots,r_i$ are nonnegative for all $1\leq i \leq k$. In this paper we explore the polyhedral and tropical geometry of flag positroids, particularly when $\boldsymbol{r}:=(a, a+1,\dots,b)$ is a sequence of consecutive numbers. In this case we show that the nonnegative tropical flag variety TrFl$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$ equals the nonnegative flag Dressian FlDr$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$, and that the points $\boldsymbolμ = (μ_a,\ldots, μ_b)$ of TrFl$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0} =$ FlDr$_{\boldsymbol{r},n}^{\geq 0}$ give rise to coherent subdivisions of the flag positroid polytope $P(\underline{\boldsymbolμ})$ into flag positroid polytopes. Our results have applications to Bruhat interval polytopes: for example, we show that a complete flag matroid polytope is a Bruhat interval polytope if and only if its $(\leq 2)$-dimensional faces are Bruhat interval polytopes. Our results also have applications to realizability questions. We define a positively oriented flag matroid to be a sequence of positively oriented matroids $(χ_1,\dots,χ_k)$ which is also an oriented flag matroid. We then prove that every positively oriented flag matroid of ranks $\boldsymbol{r}=(a,a+1,\dots,b)$ is realizable.
Geometry of higher rank valuations
The aim of this paper is to introduce a certain number of tools and results suitable for the study of valuations of higher rank on function fields of algebraic varieties. This will be based on a study of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations taking values in the lexicographically ordered group R^k.
We prove a duality theorem that gives a geometric realization of higher rank quasi-monomial valuations as tangent cones of dual cone complexes. Using this duality, we provide an analytic description of quasi-monomial valuations as multi-directional derivative operators on tropical functions.
We consider moreover a refined notion of tropicalization in which we remember the initial terms of power series on each cone of a dual complex, and prove a tropical analogue of the weak approximation theorem in number theory by showing that any compatible collection of initial terms on cones of a dual cone complex is the refined tropicalization of a rational function in the function field of the variety.
Endowing the value group R^k with its Euclidean topology, we study then a natural topology on spaces of higher rank valuations that we call the tropical topology. By using the approximation theorem we provide an explicit description of the tropical topology on tangent cones of dual cone complexes.
Finally, we show that tangent cones of dual complexes provide a notion of skeleton in higher rank non-archimedean geometry. That is, generalizing the picture in rank one to higher rank, we construct retraction maps to tangent cones of dual cone complexes, and use them to obtain limit formulae in which we reconstruct higher rank non-archimedian spaces with their tropical topology as the projective limit of their higher rank skeleta.
We conjecture that these higher rank skeleta provide appropriate bases for the study of variations of Newton-Okounkov bodies.

We prove quadratic generation for the ideal of the Cox ring of the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^3$ at $7$ points, solving a conjecture of Lesieutre and Park. To do this we compute Khovanskii bases, implementing techniques which proved successful in the case of Del Pezzo surfaces. Such bases give us degenerations to toric varieties whose associated polytopes encode toric degenerations with respect to all projective embeddings. We study the edge-graphs of these polytopes and we introduce the Mukai edge graph.

We prove that the moduli space of rational curves with cyclic action, constructed in our previous work, is realizable as a wonderful compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in a product of projective spaces. By proving a general result on such wonderful compactifications, we conclude that this moduli space is Chow-equivalent to an explicit toric variety (whose fan can be understood as a tropical version of the moduli space), from which a computation of its Chow ring follows.
Remixed Eulerian numbers

Remixed Eulerian numbers are a polynomial $q$-deformation of Postnikov's mixed Eulerian numbers. They arose naturally in previous work by the authors concerning the permutahedral variety and subsume well-known families of polynomials such as $q$-binomial coefficients and Garsia--Remmel's $q$-hit numbers. We study their combinatorics in more depth. As polynomials in $q$, they are shown to be symmetric and unimodal. By interpreting them as computing success probabilities in a simple probabilistic process we arrive at a combinatorial interpretation involving weighted trees. By decomposing the permutahedron into certain combinatorial cubes, we obtain a second combinatorial interpretation. At $q=1$, the former recovers Postnikov's interpretation whereas the latter recovers Liu's interpretation, both of which were obtained via methods different from ours.

We construct small resolutions of the moduli space $\overline{Q}_n$ of stable scaled $n$-marked lines of Ziltener and Ma'u--Woodward and of the moduli space $\overline{P}_n$ of stable $n$-marked ${\mathbb G}_a$-rational trees introduced in earlier work. The resolution of $\overline{P}_n$ is the augmented wonderful variety corresponding to the graphic matroid of the complete graph. The resolution of $\overline{Q}_n$ is a further blowup, also a wonderful model of an arrangement in ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$.
Fine Grained Analysis of High Dimensional Random Walks

One of the most important properties of high dimensional expanders is that high dimensional random walks converge rapidly. This property has proven to be extremely useful in variety of fields in the theory of computer science from agreement testing to sampling, coding theory and more. In this paper we present a state of the art result in a line of works analyzing the convergence of high dimensional random walks~\cite{DBLP:conf/innovations/KaufmanM17,DBLP:conf/focs/DinurK17, DBLP:conf/approx/KaufmanO18,DBLP:journals/corr/abs-2001-02827}, by presenting a \emph{structured} version of the result of~\cite{DBLP:journals/corr/abs-2001-02827}. While previous works examined the expansion in the viewpoint of the worst possible eigenvalue, in this work we relate the expansion of a function to the entire spectrum of the random walk operator using the structure of the function; We call such a theorem a Fine Grained High Order Random Walk Theorem. In sufficiently structured cases the fine grained result that we present here can be much better than the worst case while in the worst case our result is equivalent to~\cite{DBLP:journals/corr/abs-2001-02827}.
In order to prove the Fine Grained High Order Random Walk Theorem we introduce a way to bootstrap the expansion of random walks on the vertices of a complex into a fine grained understanding of higher order random walks, provided that the expansion is good enough.
In addition, our \emph{single} bootstrapping theorem can simultaneously yield our Fine Grained High Order Random Walk Theorem as well as the well known Trickling down Theorem. Prior to this work, High order Random walks theorems and Tricking down Theorem have been obtained from different proof methods.

Edge ideals of finite simple graphs are well-studied over polynomial rings. In this paper, we initiate the study of edge ideals over exterior algebras, specifically focusing on the depth and singular varieties of such ideals. We prove an upper bound on the depth of the edge ideal associated to a general graph and a more refined bound for bipartite graphs, and we show that both are tight. We also compute the depth of several large families of graphs including cycles, complete multipartite graphs, spider graphs, and Ferrers graphs. Finally, we focus on the effect whiskering a graph has on the depth of the associated edge ideal.
Pattern-Avoiding Fishburn Permutations and Ascent Sequences
A Fishburn permutation is a permutation which avoids the bivincular pattern $(231, \{1\}, \{1\})$, while an ascent sequence is a sequence of nonnegative integers in which each entry is less than or equal to one more than the number of ascents to its left. Fishburn permutations and ascent sequences are linked by a bijection $g$ of Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, and Kitaev. We write $F_n(σ_1,\ldots,σ_k)$ to denote the set of Fishburn permutations of length $n$ which avoid each of $σ_1,\ldots,σ_k$ and we write $A_n(α_1,\ldots,α_k)$ to denote the set of ascent sequences which avoid each of $α_1,\ldots,α_k$. We settle a conjecture of Gil and Weiner by showing that $g$ restricts to a bijection between $F_n(3412)$ and $A_n(201)$. Building on work of Gil and Weiner, we use elementary techniques to enumerate $F_n(123)$ with respect to inversion number and number of left-to-right maxima, obtaining expressions in terms of $q$-binomial coefficients, and to enumerate $F_n(123,σ)$ for all $σ$. We use generating tree techniques to study the generating functions for $F_n(321, 1423)$, $F_n(321,3124)$, and $F_n(321,2143)$ with respect to inversion number and number of left-to-right maxima. We use these results to show $|F_n(321,1423)| = |F_n(321,3124)| = F_{n+2} - n - 1$, where $F_n$ is a Fibonacci number, and $|F_n(321,2143)| = 2^{n-1}$. We conclude with a variety of conjectures and open problems.
