Nets in $\mathbb P^2$ and Alexander Duality
Published • View PublicationBIB
A net in $\mathbb{P}^2$ is a configuration of lines $\mathcal A$ and points $X$ satisfying certain incidence properties. Nets appear in a variety of settings, ranging from quasigroups to combinatorial design to classification of Kac-Moody algebras to cohomology jump loci of hyperplane arrangements. For a matroid $M$ and rank $r$, we associate a monomial ideal (a monomial variant of the Orlik-Solomon ideal) to the set of flats of $M$ of rank $\le r$. In the context of line arrangements in $\mathbb{P}^2$, applying Alexander duality to the resulting ideal yields insight into the combinatorial structure of nets.
Idempotent Varieties of Incidence Monoids and Bipartite Posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
The algebraic variety defined by the idempotents of an incidence monoid is investigated. Its irreducible components are determined. The intersection with an antichain submonoid is shown to be the union of these irreducible components. The antichain monoids of bipartite posets are shown to be orthodox semigroups. The Green's relations are explicitly determined, and applications to conjugacy problems are described. In particular, it is shown that two elements in the antichain monoid are primarily conjugate in the monoid if and only if they belong to the same $\mathcal{J}$-class and their multiplication by an idempotent of the same $\mathcal{J}$-class gives conjugate elements in the group.

Landau-Ginzburg potentials via projective representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We interpret the Landau-Ginzburg potentials associated to Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich's partial compactifications of cluster varieties as F-polynomials of projective representations of Jacobian algebras. Along the way, we show that both the projective and the injective representations of Jacobi-finite quivers with potential are well-behaved under Derksen-Weyman-Zelevinsky's mutations of representations.

Waring identifiable subspaces over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
Waring's problem, of expressing an integer as the sum of powers, has a very long history going back to the 17th century, and the problem has been studied in many different contexts. In this paper we introduce the notion of a Waring subspace and a Waring identifiable subspace with respect to a projective algebraic variety $\mathcal X$. When $\mathcal X$ is the Veronese variety, these subspaces play a fundamental role in the theory of symmetric tensors and are related to the Waring decomposition and Waring identifiability of symmetric tensors (homogeneous polynomials). We give several constructions and classification results of Waring identifiable subspaces with respect to the Veronese variety in ${\mathbb{P}}^5({\mathbb{F}}_q)$ and in ${\mathbb{P}}^{9}({\mathbb{F}}_q)$, and include some applications to the theory of linear systems of quadrics in ${\mathbb{P}}^3({\mathbb{F}}_q)$.

Chimney retractions in affine buildings encode orbits in affine flag varieties
Published in Innov. Incidence Geom. 20 (2023) 395-430 • View PublicationBIB
This paper determines the relationship between the geometry of retractions and the combinatorics of folded galleries for arbitrary affine buildings, and so provides a unified framework to study orbits in affine flag varieties. We introduce the notion of labeled folded galleries for any affine building X and use these to describe the preimages of chimney retractions. When X is the building for a group with an affine Tits system, such as the Bruhat-Tits building for a group over a local field, we can then relate labeled folded galleries and shadows to double coset intersections in affine flag varieties. This result generalizes the authors' previous joint work with Naqvi on groups over function fields.

Underlying Flag Polymatroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a natural geometric relationship between matroids and underlying flag matroids by relating the geometry of the greedy algorithm to monotone path polytopes. This perspective allows us to generalize the construction of underlying flag matroids to polymatroids. We show that the polytopes associated to underlying flag polymatroid are simple by proving that they are normally equivalent to certain nestohedra. We use this to show that polymatroids realized by subspace arrangements give rise to smooth toric varieties in flag varieties and we interpret our construction in terms of toric quotients. We give various examples that illustrate the rich combinatorial structure of flag polymatroids. Finally, we study general monotone paths on polymatroid polytopes, that relate to the enumeration of certain Young tableaux.
Cluster structures on braid varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show the existence of cluster $\mathcal{A}$-structures and cluster Poisson structures on any braid variety, for any simple Lie group. The construction is achieved via weave calculus and a tropicalization of Lusztig's coordinates. Several explicit seeds are provided and the quiver and cluster variables are readily computable. We prove that these upper cluster algebras equal their cluster algebras, show local acyclicity, and explicitly determine their DT-transformations as the twist automorphisms of braid varieties. The main result also resolves the conjecture of B. Leclerc on the existence of cluster algebra structures on the coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties.

Stellahedral geometry of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use the geometry of the stellahedral toric variety to study matroids. We identify the valuative group of matroids with the cohomology ring of the stellahedral toric variety, and show that valuative, homological, and numerical equivalence relations for matroids coincide. We establish a new log-concavity result for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid, answering a question of Wagner and Shapiro-Smirnov-Vaintrob on Postnikov-Shapiro algebras, and calculate the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of matroid Schubert cells. The central construction is the "augmented tautological classes of matroids," modeled after certain vector bundles on the stellahedral toric variety.

Seshadri stratifications and Schubert varieties: a geometric construction of a standard monomial theory
Published in Pure and Applied Mathematics Quarterly, Volume 20, Number 1, 139--169, 2024 • Search Publication
A standard monomial theory for Schubert varieties is constructed exploiting (1) the geometry of the Seshadri stratifications of Schubert varieties by their Schubert subvarieties and (2) the combinatorial LS-path character formula for Demazure modules. The general theory of Seshadri stratifications is improved by using arbitrary linearization of the partial order and by weakening the definition of balanced stratification.
An algorithm for Berenstein-Kazhdan decoration functions and trails for classical Lie algebras

For a simply connected connected simple algebraic group $G$, it is known that a variety $B_{w_0}^-:=B^-\cap U\overline{w_0}U$ has a geometric crystal structure with a positive structure $θ^-_{\mathbf{i}}:(\mathbb{C}^{\times})^{l(w_0)}\rightarrow B_{w_0}^-$ for each reduced word $\mathbf{i}$ of the longest element $w_0$ of Weyl group. A rational function $Φ^h_{BK}=\sum_{i\in I}Δ_{w_0Λ_i,s_iΛ_i}$ on $B_{w_0}^-$ is called a half-potential, where $Δ_{w_0Λ_i,s_iΛ_i}$ is a generalized minor. Computing $Φ^h_{BK}\circ θ^-_{\mathbf{i}}$ explicitly, we get an explicit form of string cone or polyhedral realization of $B(\infty)$ for the finite dimensional simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. In this paper, for an arbitrary reduced word $\mathbf{i}$, we give an algorithm to compute the summand $Δ_{w_0Λ_i,s_iΛ_i}\circ θ^-_{\mathbf{i}}$ of $Φ^h_{BK}\circ θ^-_{\mathbf{i}}$ in the case $i\in I$ satisfies that for any weight $μ$ of $V(-w_0Λ_i)$ and $t\in I$, it holds $\langle h_t,μ\rangle\in\{2,1,0,-1,-2\}$. In particular, if $\mathfrak{g}$ is of type ${\rm A}_n$, ${\rm B}_n$, ${\rm C}_n$ or ${\rm D}_n$ then all $i\in I$ satisfy this condition so that one can completely calculate $Φ^h_{BK}\circ θ^-_{\mathbf{i}}$. We will also prove that our algorithm works in the case $\mathfrak{g}$ is of type ${\rm G}_2$.

Initial degenerations of flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the initial degenerations of the flag variety admit closed immersions into finite inverse limits of flag matroid strata, where the diagrams are derived from matroidal subdivisions of a suitable flag matroid polytope. As an application, we prove that the initial degenerations of $\operatorname{F\ell}^{\circ}(n)$ -- the open subvariety of the complete flag variety $\operatorname{F\ell}(n)$ consisting of flags in general position -- are smooth and irreducible when $n\leq 4$. We also study the Chow quotient of $\operatorname{F\ell}(n)$ by the diagonal torus of $\operatorname{PGL}(n)$, and show that, for $n=4$, this is a log crepant resolution of its log canonical model.

Criteria for smoothness of Positroid varieties via pattern avoidance, Johnson graphs, and spirographs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Positroids are certain representable matroids originally studied by Postnikov in connection with the totally nonnegative Grassmannian and now used widely in algebraic combinatorics. The positroids give rise to determinantal equations defining positroid varieties as subvarieties of the Grassmannian variety. Rietsch, Knutson-Lam-Speyer, and Pawlowski studied geometric and cohomological properties of these varieties. In this paper, we continue the study of the geometric properties of positroid varieties by establishing several equivalent conditions characterizing smooth positroid varieties using a variation of pattern avoidance defined on decorated permutations, which are in bijection with positroids. This allows us to give two formulas for counting the number of smooth positroids along with two $q$-analogs. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial method for determining the dimension of the tangent space of a positroid variety at key points using an induced subgraph of the Johnson graph. We also give a Bruhat interval characterization of positroids.

Polysymmetric functions and motivic measures of configuration spaces
We introduce a generalization of symmetric functions and apply the resulting theory to compute the class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of the space of geometrically irreducible hypersurfaces of a fixed degree in projective space.
Motzkin numbers and flag codes
Motzkin numbers have been widely studied since they count many different combinatorial objects. In this paper we present a new appearance of this remarkable sequence in the network coding setting through a particular case of multishot codes called flag codes. A flag code is a set of sequences of nested subspaces (flags) of a vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. If the list of dimensions is $(1, \dots, n-1)$, we speak about a full flag code. The flag distance is defined as the sum of the respective subspace distances and can be represented by means of the so-called distance vectors. We show that the number of distance vectors corresponding to the full flag variety on $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is exactly the $n$-th Motzkin number. Moreover, we can identify the integer sequence that counts the number of possible distance vectors associated to a full flag code with prescribed minimum distance.

On torus quotients of Schubert varieties in Orthogonal Grassmannian

Let $G=Spin(8n, \mathbb{C})(n\ge 1)$ and $T_{G}$ be a maximal torus of $G.$ Let $P^{α_{4n}}(\supset T_{G})$ be the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_{4n}.$ Let $X$ be a Schubert variety in $G/P^{α_{4n}}$ admitting semi-stable point with respect to the $T$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(2ω_{4n}).$ Let $R=\bigoplus_{k \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}}R_k,$ where $R_k=H^{0}(X, \mathcal{L}^{\otimes k}(2ω_{4n}))^{T_{G}}.$ In this article, we prove that for $n=1$ and $X=G/P^{α_4},$ the graded $\mathbb{C}$-algebra $R$ is generated by $R_1.$ As a consequence, we prove that the GIT quotient of $G/P^{α_{4}}$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of the $T_{G}$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(2ω_{4})$ and is isomorphic to the projective space $(\mathbb{P}^{2},\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{2}}(1))$ as a polarized variety. Further, we prove that $R$ is generated by $R_1$ and $R_2$ for some Schubert varieties in $G/P^{α_{4n}}$ (for $n \geq 2$). As a consequence, we prove that the GIT quotient of those Schubert varieties are projectively normal with respect to the descent of the $T_G$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(4ω_{4n}).$ Moreover, for $G = Spin(2n,\mathbb{C})(n \ge 4)$ (respectively, $G=Sp(2n, \mathbb{C}) (n\ge 2)$) and a maximal torus $T_G$ of $G,$ we prove that the GIT quotient of $G/P^{α_{1}}$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of the $T_G$-linearized very ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}(2ω_{1})$ and is isomorphic to the projective space $(\mathbb{P}^{n-2},\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n-2}}(1))$ (respectively, $(\mathbb{P}^{n-1},\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{n-1}}(1))$ as a polarized variety.

Computing Vanishing Ideals for Toric Codes
Motivated by applications to the theory of error-correcting codes, we give methods for computing a generating set for the ideal generated by $β$-graded polynomials vanishing on certain subsets of a simplicial complete toric variety $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where $β$ is a $d\times r$ matrix whose columns generate a subsemigroup $\mathbb{N}β$ of $\mathbb{N}^d$. We also give a method for computing the vanishing ideal of the set of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points of $X$. When $β=[w_1 \cdots w_r]$ is a row matrix corresponding to a numerical semigroup $\mathbb{N}β=\langle w_1,\dots,w_r \rangle$, $X$ is a weighted projective space and generators of the relevant vanishing ideal is given using generators of defining (toric) ideals of numerical semigroup rings corresponding to semigroups generated by subsets of $\{w_1,\dots,w_r\}$.
Subspaces Fixed by a Nilpotent Matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
The linear spaces that are fixed by a given nilpotent $n \times n$ matrix form a subvariety of the Grassmannian. We classify these varieties for small $n$. Mutiah, Weekes and Yacobi conjectured that their radical ideals are generated by certain linear forms known as shuffle equations. We prove this conjecture for $n \leq 7$, and we disprove it for $n=8$. The question remains open for nilpotent matrices arising from the affine Grassmannian.

Treewidth versus clique number. III. Tree-independence number of graphs with a forbidden structure
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue the study of $(\mathrm{tw},ω)$-bounded graph classes, that is, hereditary graph classes in which the treewidth can only be large due to the presence of a large clique, with the goal of understanding the extent to which this property has useful algorithmic implications for the Independent Set and related problems. In the previous paper of the series [Dallard, Milanič, and Štorgel, Treewidth versus clique number. II. Tree-independence number], we introduced the tree-independence number, a min-max graph invariant related to tree decompositions. Bounded tree-independence number implies both $(\mathrm{tw},ω)$-boundedness and the existence of a polynomial-time algorithm for the Maximum Weight Independent Set problem, provided that the input graph is given together with a tree decomposition with bounded independence number. In this paper, we consider six graph containment relations and for each of them characterize the graphs $H$ for which any graph excluding $H$ with respect to the relation admits a tree decomposition with bounded independence number. The induced minor relation is of particular interest: we show that excluding either a $K_5$ minus an edge or the $4$-wheel implies the existence of a tree decomposition in which every bag is a clique plus at most $3$ vertices, while excluding a complete bipartite graph $K_{2,q}$ implies the existence of a tree decomposition with independence number at most $2(q-1)$. Our constructive proofs are obtained using a variety of tools, including $\ell$-refined tree decompositions, SPQR trees, and potential maximal cliques. They imply polynomial-time algorithms for the Independent Set and related problems in an infinite family of graph classes; in particular, the results apply to the class of $1$-perfectly orientable graphs, answering a question of Beisegel, Chudnovsky, Gurvich, Milanič, and Servatius from 2019.

Earthquake theorem for cluster algebras of finite type
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, rnae027, Published 23 February 2024 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a cluster algebraic generalization of Thurston's earthquake map for the cluster algebras of finite type, which we call the \emph{cluster earthquake map}. It is defined by gluing exponential maps, which is modeled after the earthquakes along ideal arcs. We prove an analogue of the earthquake theorem, which states that the cluster earthquake map gives a homeomorphism between the spaces of $\mathbb{R}^\mathrm{trop}$- and $\mathbb{R}_{>0}$-valued points of the cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety. For those of type $A_n$ and $D_n$, the cluster earthquake map indeed recovers the earthquake maps for marked disks and once-punctured marked disks, respectively. Moreover, we investigate certain asymptotic behaviors of the cluster earthquake map, which give rise to "continuous deformations" of the Fock--Goncharov fan.

Bumpless pipe dream RSK, growth diagrams, and Schubert structure constants
We introduce analogs of left and right RSK insertion for Schubert calculus of complete flag varieties. The objects being inserted are certain biwords, the insertion objects are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are decorated chains in Bruhat order. As an application, we adopt Lenart's growth diagrams of permutations to give a combinatorial rule for Schubert structure constants in the separated descent case.
