Pattern avoidance and K-orbit closures
We review the various pattern avoidance criteria that have been developed for smoothness and rational smoothness of symmetric subvarieties of flag varieties in the classical cases, including some proofs and giving references for other results.
On automorphisms of undirected Bruhat graphs

The (directed) Bruhat graph $\hatΓ(u,v)$ has the elements of the Bruhat interval $[u,v]$ as vertices, with directed edges given by multiplication by a reflection. Famously, $\hatΓ(e,v)$ is regular if and only if the Schubert variety $X_v$ is smooth, and this condition on $v$ is characterized by pattern avoidance. In this work, we classify when the undirected Bruhat graph $Γ(e,v)$ is vertex-transitive; surprisingly this class of permutations is also characterized by pattern avoidance and sits nicely between the classes of smooth permutations and self-dual permutations. This leads us to a general investigation of automorphisms of $Γ(u,v)$ in the course of which we show that special matchings, which originally appeared in the theory Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, can be characterized as certain $Γ(u,v)$-automorphisms which are conjecturally sufficient to generate the orbit of $e$ under $Aut(Γ(e,v))$.
Bottom complexes
The bottom complex of a finite polyhedal pointed rational cone is the lattice polytopal complex of the compact faces of the convex hull of nonzero lattice points in the cone. The algebra, associated to the bottom complex of a cone, defines a flat deformation of the affine toric variety, associated to the polyhedral cone, set-theoretically. We describe three explicit infinite families of abstract polytopal complexes, defining such flat deformations scheme-theoretically.
A Pattern Avoidance Characterization for Smoothness of Positroid Varieties
Positroids are certain representable matroids originally studied by Postnikov in connection with the totally nonnegative Grassmannian and now used widely in algebraic combinatorics. The positroids give rise to determinantal equations defining positroid varieties as subvarieties of the Grassmannian variety. Rietsch, Knutson-Lam-Speyer and Pawlowski studied geometric and cohomological properties of these varieties. In this paper, we continue the study of the geometric properties of positroid varieties by establishing several equivalent conditions characterizing smooth positroid varieties using a variation of pattern avoidance defined on decorated permutations, which are in bijection with positroids. Furthermore, we give a combinatorial method for determining the dimension of the tangent space of a positroid variety at key points using an induced subgraph of the Johnson graph. We also give a Bruhat interval characterization of positroids.

A natural extension of Heron's 2000 year old formula for the area of a triangle to the volume of a tetrahedron is presented. This gives the fourth power of the volume as a polynomial in six simple rational functions of the areas of its four faces and of its three medial parallelograms, which are accordingly referred to herein as "interior faces." Geometrically, these rational functions are the areas of the triangles into which the exterior faces are divided by the points at which the tetrahedron's in-sphere touches those faces. Part I presents an overview of these results and some necessary but little-known background in areal geometry. Part II derives the promised extension, and ends with a conjecture as to how the formula extends to $n$-dimensional simplices for all $n > 3$. Part III explains how, for $n = 3$, the zeros of the polynomial constitute a five-dimensional semi-algebraic variety consisting almost entirely of collinear tetrahedra with vertices separated by infinite distances, but with generically well-defined distance ratios; it further proves that these unconventional Euclidean configurations can be identified with a quotient of the Klein quadric by an action of a group of reflections isomorphic to $\mathbb Z_2^4$, wherein four-point configurations in the affine plane constitute a distinguished three-dimensional subvariety. Part IV consists of five appendices which show, among other things, that the algebraic structure of the zeros in the affine plane naturally defines the associated four-element, rank $3$ chirotope, aka affine oriented matroid.

We say that a tropical subvariety $V\subset \mathbb R^n$ is $B$-realizable if it can be lifted to an analytic subset of $(Λ^*)^n$. When $V$ is a smooth curve or hypersurface, there always exists a Lagrangian submanifold lift $L_V\subset (\mathbb C^*)^n$. We prove that whenever $L_V$ has well-defined Floer cohomology, we can find for each point of $V$ a Lagrangian torus brane whose Lagrangian intersection Floer cohomology with $L_V$ is non-vanishing. Assuming an appropriate homological mirror symmetry result holds for toric varieties, it follows that whenever $L_V$ is a Lagrangian submanifold that can be made unobstructed by a bounding cochain, the tropical subvariety $V$ is $B$-realizable. As an application, we show that the Lagrangian lift of a genus zero tropical curve is unobstructed, thereby giving a purely symplectic argument for Nishinou and Siebert's proof that genus-zero tropical curves are $B$-realizable. We also prove that tropical curves inside tropical abelian surfaces are $B$-realizable.
The twist for Richardson varieties
We construct the twist automorphism of open Richardson varieties inside the flag variety of a complex semisimple algebraic group. We show that the twist map preserves totally positive parts, and prove a Chamber Ansatz formula for it. Our twist map generalizes the twist maps previously constructed by Berenstein-Fomin-Zelevinsky, Marsh-Scott, and Muller-Speyer. We use it to explain the relationship between the two conjectural cluster structures for Richardson varieties studied by Leclerc and by Ingermanson.

This paper is a direct generalization of Baker-Bowler theory to flag matroids, including its moduli interpretation as developed by Baker and the second author for matroids. More explicitly, we extend the notion of flag matroids to flag matroids over any tract, provide cryptomorphic descriptions in terms of basis axioms (Grassmann-Plücker functions), circuit/vector axioms and dual pairs, including additional characterizations in the case of perfect tracts. We establish duality of flag matroids and construct minors. Based on the theory of ordered blue schemes, we introduce flag matroid bundles and construct their moduli space, which leads to algebro-geometric descriptions of duality and minors. Taking rational points recovers flag varieties in several geometric contexts: over (topological) fields, in tropical geometry, and as a generalization of the MacPhersonian.

In this article, we will expand on the notions of maximal green and reddening sequences for quivers associated to cluster algebras. The existence of these sequences has been studied for a variety of applications related to Fomin and Zelevinsky's cluster algebras. Ahmad and Li considered a numerical measure of how close a quiver is to admitting a maximal green sequence called a red number. In this paper we generalized this notion to what we call unrestricted red numbers which are related to reddening sequences. In addition to establishing this more general framework we completely determine the red numbers and unrestricted red numbers for all finite mutation type quivers. Furthermore, we give conjectures on the possible values of red numbers and unrestricted red numbers in general.

A dissection of a polygon is obtained by drawing diagonals such that no two diagonals intersect in their interiors. In this paper, we define a toric variety of Schröder type as a smooth toric variety associated with a polygon dissection. Toric varieties of Schröder type are Fano generalized Bott manifolds, and they are isomorphic if and only if the associated Schröder trees are the same as unordered rooted trees. We describe the cohomology ring of a toric variety of Schröder type using the associated Schröder tree and discuss the cohomological rigidity problem.
Torus orbit closures in the flag variety
The study of torus orbit closures in the (complete) flag variety was initiated by Klyachko and Gelfand--Serganova in the mid-1980s, but it seems that not much has been done since then. In this chapter, we present some of the work by Klyachko and Gelfand--Serganova and our recent work on the topology, geometry, and combinatorics of torus orbit closures in the flag variety.

Nakada's colored hook formula is a vast generalization of many important formulae in combinatorics, such as the classical hook length formula and the Peterson's formula for the number of reduced expressions of minuscule Weyl group elements. In this paper, we utilize cohomological properties of Segre-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells and varieties to prove a generalization of a cohomological version of Nakada's formula, in terms of smoothness properties of Schubert varieties. A key ingredient in the proof is the study of a decorated version of the Bruhat graph. Summing over weighted paths of this graph give the terms in the generalized Nakada's formula, and also provide algorithms to calculate structure constants of multiplications of Segre-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells. For simply laced Weyl groups, we also show the equality of `skew' and `straight' Nakada's formulae. This utilizes a criterion for smoothness in terms of excited diagrams of heaps of minuscule elements, which might be of independent interest.

A subset of an abelian group is {\em sequenceable} if there is an ordering $(x_1, \ldots, x_k)$ of its elements such that the partial sums $(y_0, y_1, \ldots, y_k)$, given by $y_0 = 0$ and $y_i = \sum_{j=1}^i x_i$ for $1 \leq i \leq k$, are distinct, with the possible exception that we may have $y_k = y_0 = 0$. We demonstrate the sequenceability of subsets of size $k$ of $\mathbb{Z}_n \setminus \{ 0 \}$ when $n = mt$ in many cases, including when $m$ is either prime or has all prime factors larger than $k! /2$ for $k \leq 11$ and $t \leq 5$ and for $k=12$ and $t \leq 4$. We obtain similar, but partial, results for $13 \leq k \leq 15$. This represents progress on a variety of questions and conjectures in the literature concerning the sequenceability of subsets of abelian groups, which we combine and summarize into the conjecture that if a subset of an abelian group does not contain 0 then it is sequenceable.

Recently, Blasiak-Morse-Seelinger introduced symmetric functions called Katalan functions, and proved that the $K$-theoretic $k$-Schur functions due to Lam-Schilling-Shimozono form a subfamily of the Katalan functions. They conjectured that another subfamily of Katalan functions called the closed $k$-Schur Katalan functions are identified with the Schubert structure sheaves in the $K$-homology of the affine Grassmannian. The main result is a proof of the conjecture.
We also study a $K$-theoretic Peterson isomorphism that Ikeda, Iwao, and Maeno constructed, in a non-geometric manner, based on the unipotent solution of the relativistic Toda lattice of Ruijsenaars. We prove that the map sends a Schubert class of the quantum $K$-theory ring of the flag variety to a closed $K$-$k$-Schur Katalan function up to an explicit factor related to a translation element with respect to an anti-dominant coroot. In fact, we prove the above map coincides with a map whose existence was conjectured by Lam, Li, Mihalcea, Shimozono, and proved by Kato, and more recently by Chow and Leung.

In this paper we describe a relation between the notion of graphicahedron, introduced by Araujo-Pardo, Del Río-Francos, López-Dudet, Oliveros, and Schulte in 2010, and toric topology of manifolds of sparse isospectral Hermitian matrices. More precisely, we recall the notion of a cluster-permutohedron, a certain finite poset defined for a simple graph $Γ$. This poset is build as a combination of cosets of the symmetric group, and the geometric lattice of the graphical matroid of $Γ$. This poset is similar to the graphicahedron of $Γ$, in particular, 1-skeleta of both posets are isomorphic to Cayley graphs of the symmetric group. We describe the relation between cluster-permutohedron and graphicahedron using Galois connection and the notion of a core of a finite topology. We further prove that the face poset of the natural torus action on the manifold of isospectral $Γ$-shaped Hermitian matrices is isomorphic to the cluster-permutohedron. Using recent results in toric topology, we show that homotopy properties of graphicahedra may serve an obstruction to equivariant formality of isospectral matrix manifolds. We introduce a generalization of a cluster-permutohedron and describe the combinatorial structure of a large family of manifolds with torus actions, including Grassmann manifolds and partial flag manifolds.
Seshadri stratification for Schubert varieties and Standard Monomial Theory
The theory of Seshadri stratifications has been developed by the authors with the intention to build up a new geometric approach towards a standard monomial theory for embedded projective varieties with certain nice properties. In this article, we investigate the Seshadri stratification on a Schubert variety arising from its Schubert subvarieties. We show that the standard monomial theory developed in [32] is compatible with this new strategy.

In this paper, we propose an algebraic approach via Lakshmibai-Seshadri (LS) algebras to establish a link between standard monomial theories, Newton-Okounkov bodies and valuations. This is applied to Schubert varieties, where this approach is compatible with the one using Seshadri stratifications by the same authors (arXiv:2112.03776), showing that LS paths encode vanishing multiplicities with respect to the web of Schubert varieties.
Spread approximations for forbidden intersections problems

We develop a new approach to approximate families of sets, complementing the existing `$Δ$-system method' and `junta approximations method'. The approach, which we refer to as `spread approximations method', is based on the notion of $r$-spread families and builds on the recent breakthrough result of Alweiss, Lovett, Wu and Zhang for the Erd\H os--Rado `Sunflower Conjecture'. Our approach can work in a variety of sparse settings.
To demonstrate the versatility and strength of the approach, we present several of its applications to forbidden intersection problems, including bounds on the size of regular intersecting families, the resolution of the Erd\H os--Sós problem for sets in a new range and, most notably, the resolution of the $t$-intersection and Erd\H os--Sós problems for permutations in a new range. Specifically, we show that any collection of permutations of an $n$-element set with no two permutations intersecting in at most (exactly) $t-1$ elements has size at most $(n-t)!$, provided $t\le n^{1-ε}$ ($t \le n^{\frac{1}{3}-ε}$) for an arbitrary $ε>0$ and $n>n_0(ε)$. Previous results for these problems only dealt with the case of fixed $t$. The proof follows the structure vs. randomness philosophy, which proved to be very efficient in proving results throughout mathematics and computer science.
Graph coloring-related properties of (generating functions of) Hodge-Deligne polynomials
Motivated by a connection between the topology of (generalized) configuration spaces and chromatic polynomials, we show that generating functions of Hodge-Deligne polynomials of quasiprojective varieties and colorings of acyclic directed graphs with the complete graph $K_n$ as the underlying undirected graph. In order to do this, we combine an interpretation of Crew-Spirkl for plethysms involving chromatic symmetric polynomials using colorings of directed acyclic graphs to plethystic exponentials often appearing Hodge-Deligne polynomials of varieties. Applying this to a recent result of Florentino-Nozad-Zamora, we find a connection between $GL_n$-character varieties of finitely presented groups and colorings of these "complete" directed graphs by (signed) variables used in the Hodge-Deligne polynomials of the irreducible representations.
As a consequence of the constructions used, generators of Hodge-Deligne polynomials carry over to generators of the plethystic exponentials as a power series in a way that is compatible with this graph coloring interpretation and gives interesting combinatorial information that simplifies when we consider Hodge-Deligne polynomials of birationally equivalent varieties to be equivalent. Finally, we give an application of methods used to symmetries of Hodge-Deligne polynomials of varieties and their configuration spaces and their relation to chromatic symmetric polynomials.
