Hodge Theory of Hypersurfaces in Toric Varieties and Recent Developments in Quantum Physics
This is the author's Habilitation which took place at University of Essen on July 11, 1993. The manuscript contains two parts. The first one is devoted to the author's combinatorial construction of mirrors of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties. The second one contains author's results on the variation of mixed Hodge structures of affine hypersurfaces in algebraic tori and their connection to Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky theory of generalized hypergeometric functions and their applications to the mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for $321$-avoiding Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties
We prove the Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity of 321-avoiding Kazhdan--Lusztig varieties can be computed combinatorially in terms of $K$-theoretic skew excited Young diagrams. We present an algorithm which gives a lower bound for this regularity and describe a setting in which this algorithm provides precise regularity computations. This algorithm specializes to compute the regularity of all two-sided mixed ladder determinantal varieties.
Algebraicity of hypergeometric functions with arbitrary parameters
We provide a complete classification of the algebraicity of (generalized) hypergeometric functions with no restriction on the set of their parameters. Our characterization relies on the interlacing criteria of Christol (1987) and Beukers-Heckman (1989) for globally bounded and algebraic hypergeometric functions, however in a more general setting which allows arbitrary complex parameters with possibly integral differences. We also showcase the adapted criterion on a variety of different examples.
Approximate quadratic varieties
A classical result in additive combinatorics, which is a combination of Balog-Szemerédi-Gowers theorem and a variant of Freiman's theorem due to Ruzsa, says that if a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ contains at least $c |A|^3$ additive quadruples, then there exists a subspace $V$, comparable in size to $A$, such that $|A \cap V| \geq Ω_c(|A|)$. Motivated by the fact that higher order approximate algebraic structures play an important role in the theory of uniformity norms, it would be of interest to find higher order analogues of the mentioned result.
In this paper, we study a quadratic version of the approximate property in question, namely what it means for a set to be an approximate quadratic variety. It turns out that information on the number of additive cubes, which are 8-tuples of the form $(x, x+ a,$ $x+ b, x+ c,$ $x+ a + b, x+ a + c,$ $x+ b + c, x+ a + b + c)$, in a set is insufficient on its own to guarantee quadratic structure, and it is necessary to restrict linear structure in a given set, which is a natural assumption in this context. With this in mind, we say that a subset $V$ of a finite vector space $G$ is a $(c_0, δ, \varepsilon)$-approximate quadratic variety if $|V| = δ|G|$, $\|1_V - δ\|_{\mathsf{U}^2} \leq \varepsilon$ and $V$ contains at least $c_0δ^7 |G|^4$ additive cubes. Our main result is the structure theorem for approximate quadratic varieties, stating that such a set has a large intersection with an exact quadratic variety of comparable size.
Approximating rational points on horospherical varieties
Let $X$ be a smooth projective split horospherical variety over a number field $k$ and $x\in X(k)$. Contingent on Vojta's conjecture, we construct a curve $C$ through $x$ such that (in a precise sense) rational points on $C$ approximate $x$ better than any Zariski dense sequence of rational points. This proves a weakening of a conjecture of McKinnon in the horospherical case. Our results make use of the minimal model program and apply as well to $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial horospherical varieties with terminal singularities.
Wreath Macdonald polynomials, a survey

Wreath Macdonald polynomials arise from the geometry of $Γ$-fixed loci of Hilbert schemes of points in the plane, where $Γ$ is a finite cyclic group of order $r\ge 1$. For $r=1$, they recover the classical (modified) Macdonald symmetric functions through Haiman's geometric realization of these functions. The existence, integrality, and positivity of wreath Macdonald polynomials for $r>1$ was conjectured by Haiman and first proved in work of Bezrukavnikov and Finkelberg by means of an equivalence of derived categories. Despite the power of this approach, a lack of explicit tools providing direct access to wreath Macdonald polynomials -- in the spirit of Macdonald's original works -- has limited progress in the subject.
A recent result of Wen provides a remarkable set of such tools, packaged in the representation theory of quantum toroidal algebras. In this article, we survey Wen's result along with the basic theory of wreath Macdonald polynomials, including its geometric foundations and the role of bigraded reflection functors in the construction of wreath analogs of the $\nabla$ operator. We also formulate new conjectures on the values of important constants arising in the theory of wreath Macdonald $P$-polynomials. A variety of examples are used to illustrate these objects and constructions throughout the paper.

For every connected, almost simple linear algebraic group $G\leq\mathrm{GL}_{n}$ over a large enough field $K$, every subvariety $V\subseteq G$, and every finite generating set $A\subseteq G(K)$, we prove a general dimensional bound, that is, a bound of the form \[|A\cap V(\overline{K})|\leq C_{1}|A^{C_{2}}|^{\frac{\dim(V)}{\dim(G)}}\] with $C_{1},C_{2}$ depending only on $n,\mathrm{deg}(V)$. The dependence of $C_1$ on $n$ (or rather on $\dim (V)$) is doubly exponential, whereas $C_2$ (which is independent of $\mathrm{deg}(V)$) depends simply exponentially on $n$. Bounds of this form have proved useful in the study of growth in linear algebraic groups since 2005 (Helfgott) and, before then, in the study of subgroup structure (Larsen-Pink: $A$ a subgroup). In bounds for general $V$ and $G$ available before our work, the dependence of $C_1$ and $C_2$ on $n$ was of exponential-tower type. We draw immediate consequences regarding diameter bounds for untwisted classical groups $G(\mathbb{F}_{q})$. (In a separate paper, we derive stronger diameter bounds from stronger dimensional bounds we prove for specific families of varieties $V$.)

Webs yield an especially important realization of certain Specht modules, irreducible representations of symmetric groups, as they provide a pictorial basis with a convenient diagrammatic calculus. In recent work, the last three authors associated polynomials to noncrossing partitions without singleton blocks, so that the corresponding polynomials form a web basis of the pennant Specht module $S^{(d,d,1^{n-2d})}$. These polynomials were interpreted as global sections of a line bundle on a 2-step partial flag variety.
Here, we both simplify and extend this construction. On the one hand, we show that these polynomials can alternatively be situated in the homogeneous coordinate ring of a Grassmannian, instead of a 2-step partial flag variety, and can be realized as tensor invariants of classical (but highly nonplanar) tensor diagrams. On the other hand, we extend these ideas from the pennant Specht module $S^{(d,d,1^{n-2d})}$ to more general flamingo Specht modules $S^{(d^r,1^{n-rd})}$. In the hook case $r=1$, we obtain a spanning set that can be restricted to a basis in various ways. In the case $r>2$, we obtain a basis of a well-behaved subspace of $S^{(d^r,1^{n-rd})}$, but not of the entire module.
Demazure weaves for reduced plabic graphs (with a proof that Muller-Speyer twist is Donaldson-Thomas)
First, this article develops the theory of weaves and their cluster structures for the affine cones of positroid varieties. In particular, we explain how to construct a weave from a reduced plabic graph, show it is Demazure, compare their associated cluster structures, and prove that the conjugate surface of the graph is Hamiltonian isotopic to the Lagrangian filling associated to the weave. The T-duality map for plabic graphs has a surprising key role in the construction of these weaves. Second, we use the above established bridge between weaves and reduced plabic graphs to show that the Muller-Speyer twist map on positroid varieties is the Donaldson-Thomas transformation. This latter statement implies that the Muller-Speyer twist is a quasi-cluster automorphism. An additional corollary of our results is that target labeled seeds and the source labeled seeds are related by a quasi-cluster transformation.
Sullivant-Talaska ideal of the cyclic Gaussian Graphical Model
In this paper, we settle a conjecture due to Sturmfels and Uhler concerning generation of the prime ideal of the variety associated to the Gaussian graphical model of any cycle graph. Our methods are general and applicable to a large class of ideals with radical initial ideals.
An Elekes-Rónyai theorem for sets with few products
Given $d,n \in \mathbb{N}$, we write a polynomial $F \in \mathbb{C}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ to be degenerate if there exist $P\in \mathbb{C}[y_1, \dots, y_{n-1}]$ and $m_j = x_1^{v_{j,1}}\dots x_n^{v_{j,n}}$ with $v_{j,1}, \dots, v_{j,n} \in \mathbb{Q}$, for every $1 \leq j \leq n-1$, such that $F = P(m_1, \dots, m_{n-1})$. Our main result shows that whenever $F$ is non-degenerate, then for every finite set $A\subseteq \mathbb{C}$ such that $|A\cdot A| \leq K|A|$, one has \[ |F(A, \dots, A)| \gg_{d,n} |A|^n 2^{-O_{d,n}((\log 2K)^{3 + o(1)})}. \] This is sharp up to a factor of $O_{d,n,K}(1)$ since we have the upper bound $|F(A,\dots,A)| \leq |A|^n$ and the fact that for every degenerate $F$ and finite set $A \subseteq \mathbb{C}$ with $|A\cdot A| \leq K|A|$, one has \[ |F(A,\dots,A)| \ll K^{O_F(1)}|A|^{n-1}.\] Our techniques rely on a variety of combinatorial and linear algebraic arguments combined with Freiman type inverse theorems and Schmidt's subspace theorem.
Linear Degenerate Tropical Flag Varieties
We study linear degenerations of flag varieties from the point of view of tropical geometry. We define the linear degenerate flag Dressian and prove a correspondence between: $(a)$ points in the linear degenerate flag Dressian, $(b)$ linear degenerate flags of valuated matroids, $(c)$ linear degenerate flags of tropical linear spaces, and $(d)$ morphisms of valuated matroids arising from projection maps.
The structure of monotone blow-ups in symplectic toric geometry and a question of McDuff
Monotone polytopes, also known as smooth reflexive polytopes, are the polytopes associated to monotone symplectic toric manifolds and Gorenstein Fano toric varieties. We first show that the only monotone polytopes admitting blow-ups at vertices are the simplex and the result of a codimension-two blow-up in it (this is the polyhedral version of a result of Bonavero from 2002). Then we show that the $n$-simplex admits disjoint blow-ups at faces if and only if the faces are disjoint and have dimensions adding up to $n-1$ or $n-2$. These results answer a question posed by Dusa McDuff in 2011.
Morphisms from projective spaces to $G/P$
We study maps between projective spaces and flag varieties. Let $G = SL(n,\mathbb{C})$. We show that there is no map from $\mathbb{P}^2$ to full flag variety $G/B$. We classify the minimal parabolic subgroups $P$ for which there is a map from $\mathbb{P}^3$ to $G/P$.

We show that each cluster seed in the augmentation variety is inhabited by an embedded exact Lagrangian filling. This resolves the matter of surjectivity of the map from Lagrangian fillings to cluster seeds. The main new technique to produce these Lagrangian fillings is the construction and study of a quiver with potential associated to curve configurations. We prove that its deformation space is trivial and show how to use it to manipulate Lagrangian fillings with $\mathbb{L}$-compressing systems via Lagrangian disk surgeries.
Towards combinatorial characterization of the smoothness of Hessenberg Schubert varieties
A \emph{Hessenberg Schubert variety} is an irreducible component of the intersection of a Schubert variety and a Hessenberg variety, defined as the closure of a Schubert cell inside the Hessenberg variety. We consider the smoothness of Hessenberg Schubert varieties of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties of type $A$ in this paper.
We consider the smoothness of the intersection of a Schubert variety and a Hessenberg variety to ensure the smoothness of the corresponding Hessenberg Schubert variety. Specifically, we analyze the structure of the GKM graphs of the intersection of a Schubert variety indexed by some special permutations and a Hessenberg variety. The regularity of the GKM graph is completely characterized in terms of pattern avoidance, which is a necessary (and also sufficient conjecturally) condition for the intersection to be smooth. We then extend the pattern avoidance result to all permutations, which is believed to be a sufficient condition for the corresponding Hessenberg Schubert variety to be smooth.
Quasi-coincidence of cluster structures on positroid varieties

By work of a number of authors, beginning with Scott and culminating with Galashin and Lam, the coordinate rings of positroid varieties in the Grassmannian carry cluster algebra structures. In fact, they typically carry many such structures, the two best understood being the source-labelled and target-labelled structures, referring to how the initial cluster is computed from a Postnikov diagram or plabic graph. In this article, we show that these two cluster algebra structures quasi-coincide, meaning in particular that a cluster variable in one structure may be expressed in the other structure as the product of a cluster variable and a Laurent monomial in the frozen variables. This resolves a conjecture attributed to Muller and Speyer from 2017. The proof depends critically on categorification: of the relevant cluster algebra structures by the author, of perfect matchings and twists by the author with Çanakçı and King, and of quasi-equivalences of cluster algebras by Fraser and Keller. By similar techniques, we also show that Muller and Speyer's left twist map is a quasi-cluster equivalence from the target-labelled structure to the source-labelled structure.
Taylor is prime
We study the Taylor varieties and obtain new characterizations of them via compatible reflexive digraphs. Based on our findings, we prove that in the lattice of interpretability types of varieties, the filter of the types of all Taylor varieties is prime.
Relative cluster categories and Higgs categories with infinite-dimensional morphism spaces
Cluster algebras *with coefficients* are important since they appear in nature as coordinate algebras of varieties like Grassmannians, double Bruhat cells, unipotent cells, ... . The approach of Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer often yields Frobenius exact categories which allow to categorify such cluster algebras. In previous work, the third-named author has constructed Higgs categories and relative cluster categories in the relative Jacobi-finite setting (arXiv:2109.03707). Higgs categories generalize the Frobenius categories used by Geiss-Leclerc-Schröer.
In this article, we construct the Higgs category and the relative cluster category in the relative Jacobi-infinite setting under suitable hypotheses. These cover for example the case of Jensen-King-Su's Grassmannian cluster category. As in the relative Jacobi-finite case, the Higgs category is no longer exact but still extriangulated in the sense of Nakaoka-Palu. We also construct a cluster character refining Plamondon's.
In the appendix, Chris Fraser and the second-named author categorify quasi-cluster morphisms using Frobenius categories. A recent application of this result is due to Matthew Pressland, who uses it to prove a conjecture by Muller-Speyer.
On the geography of $3$-folds via asymptotic behavior of invariants
Roughly speaking, the problem of geography asks for the existence of varieties of general type after we fix some invariants. In dimension $1$, where we fix the genus, the geography question is trivial, but already in dimension $2$, it becomes a hard problem in general. In higher dimensions, this problem is essentially wide open. In this paper, we focus on geography in dimension $3$. We generalize the techniques which compare the geography of surfaces with the geography of arrangements of curves via asymptotic constructions. In dimension $2$ this involves resolutions of cyclic quotient singularities and a certain asymptotic behavior of the associated Dedekind sums and continued fractions. We discuss the general situation with emphasis on dimension $3$, analyzing the singularities and various resolutions that show up, and proving results about the asymptotic behavior of the invariants we fix.
