Bernstein-Sato Polynomials on Normal Toric Varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the Bernstein-Sato polynomials of Budur, Mustata and Saito to ideals in normal semigroup rings. In the case of monomial ideals, we also relate the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial to the jumping coefficients of the corresponding multiplier ideals. In order to prove the latter result, we obtain a new combinatorial description for the multiplier ideals of a monomial ideal in a normal semigroup ring.

Enumerative and bijective aspects of combinatorial maps: generalization, unification and application (PhD thesis)
This thesis deals with the enumerative study of combinatorial maps, and its application to the enumeration of other combinatorial objects. Combinatorial maps, or simply maps, form a rich combinatorial model. They have an intuitive and geometric definition, but are also related to some deep algebraic structures. For instance, a special type of maps called constellations provides a unifying framework for some enumeration problems concerning factorizations in the symmetric group. Standing on a position where many domains meet, maps can be studied using a large variety of methods, and their enumeration can also help us count other combinatorial objects. This thesis is a sampling from the rich results and connections in the enumeration of maps. This thesis is structured into four major parts. The first part, including Chapter 1 and 2, consist of an introduction to the enumerative study of maps. The second part, Chapter 3 and 4, contains my work in the enumeration of constellations, which are a special type of maps that can serve as a unifying model of some factorizations of the identity in the symmetric group. The third part, composed by Chapter 5 and 6, shows my research on the enumerative link from maps to other combinatorial objects, such as generalizations of the Tamari lattice and random graphs embeddable onto surfaces. The last part is the closing chapter, in which the thesis concludes with some perspectives and future directions in the enumerative study of maps.
Multicolour containers and the entropy of decorated graph limits
In recent breakthrough results, Saxton--Thomason and Balogh--Morris--Samotij have developed powerful theories of hypergraph containers. These theories have led to a large number of new results on transference, and on counting and characterising typical graphs in hereditary properties. In a different direction, Hatami--Janson--Szegedy proved results on the entropy of graph limits which count and characterise graphs in dense hereditary properties. In this paper, we make a threefold contribution to this area of research: 1) We generalise results of Saxton--Thomason to obtain container theorems for general, dense hereditary properties of multicoloured graphs. Our main tool is the adoption of an entropy-based framework. As corollaries, we obtain general counting, characterization and transference results. We further extend our results to cover a variety of combinatorial structures: directed graphs, oriented graphs, tournaments, multipartite graphs, multi-graphs, hypercubes and hypergraphs. 2) We generalise the results of Hatami--Janson--Szegedy on the entropy of graph limits to the setting of decorated graph limits. In particular we define a cut norm for decorated graph limits and prove compactness of the space of decorated graph limits under that norm. 3) We explore a weak equivalence between the container and graph limit approaches to counting and characterising graphs in hereditary properties. In one direction, we show how our multicolour container results may be used to recover decorated versions of the results of Hatami--Janson--Szegedy. In the other direction, we show that our decorated extensions of Hatami--Janson--Szegedy's results on graph limits imply counting and characterization applications. Similar container results were recently obtained independently by Terry.
Classes and equivalence of linear sets in $PG(1,q^n)$
The equivalence problem of $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of rank n of $PG(1,q^n)$ is investigated, also in terms of the associated variety, projecting configurations, $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear blocking sets of Rédei type and MRD-codes.

Stringy Chern classes of singular toric varieties and their applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let X be a normal projective Q-Gorenstein variety with at worst log-terminal singularities. We prove a formula expressing the total stringy Chern class of a generic complete intersection in X via the total stringy Chern class of X. This formula is motivated by its applications to mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric varieties. We compute stringy Chern classes and give a combinatorial interpretation of the stringy Libgober-Wood identity for arbitrary projective Q-Gorenstein toric varieties. As an application we derive a new combinatorial identity relating d-dimensional reflexive polytopes to the number 12 in dimension d>3.

Dimensions of multi-fan algebras
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan 72:3 (2020), 777-794 • View PublicationBIB
Given an arbitrary non-zero simplicial cycle and a generic vector coloring of its vertices, there is a way to produce a graded Poincare duality algebra associated with these data. The procedure relies on the theory of volume polynomials and multi-fans. This construction includes many important examples, such as cohomology of toric varieties and quasitoric manifolds, and Gorenstein algebras of triangulated homology manifolds, introduced by Novik and Swartz. In all these examples the dimensions of graded components of such duality algebras do not depend on the vector coloring. It was conjectured that the same holds for any simplicial cycle. We disprove this conjecture by showing that the colors of singular points of the cycle may affect the dimensions. However, the colors of smooth points are irrelevant. By using bistellar moves we show that the number of different dimension vectors arising on a given 3-dimensional pseudomanifold with isolated singularities is a topological invariant. This invariant is trivial on manifolds, but nontrivial in general.

Toric manifolds over 3-polytopes
Published in Chapter in Toric Topology and Polyhedral Products. Fields Institute Communications, vol 89, 2024, pp. 13-25 • View PublicationBIB
In this note we gather and review some facts about existence of toric spaces over 3-dimensional simple polytopes. First, over every combinatorial 3-polytope there exists a quasitoric manifold. Second, there exist combinatorial 3-polytopes, that do not correspond to any smooth projective toric variety. We restate the proof of the second claim which does not refer to complicated algebro-geometrical technique. If follows from these results that any fullerene supports quasitoric manifolds but does not support smooth projective toric varieties.

A cluster realization of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl_n})$ from quantum character varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct an injective algebra homomorphism of the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})$ into a quantum cluster algebra $\mathbf{L}_n$ associated to the moduli space of framed $PGL_{n+1}$-local systems on a marked punctured disk. We obtain a description of the coproduct of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})$ in terms of the corresponding quantum cluster algebra associated to the marked twice punctured disk, and express the action of the $R$-matrix in terms of a mapping class group element corresponding to the half-Dehn twist rotating one puncture about the other. As a consequence, we realize the algebra automorphism of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1})^{\otimes 2}$ given by conjugation by the $R$-matrix as an explicit sequence of cluster mutations, and derive a refined factorization of the $R$-matrix into quantum dilogarithms of cluster monomials.

Generalizations of Joints Problem
We generalize the joints problem to sets of varieties and prove almost sharp bound on the number of joints. As a special case, given a set of $N$ $2$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^6$, the number of points at which three $2$-planes intersect and span $\mathbb{R}^6$ is at most $CN^{3/2+ε}$. We also get almost sharp bound on the number of joints with multiplicities. The main tools are polynomial partitioning and induction on dimension.

The twist for positroid varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to connect two maps related to certain graphs embedded in the disc. The first is Postnikov's boundary measurement map, which combines partition functions of matchings in the graph into a map from an algebraic torus to an open positroid variety in a Grassmannian. The second is a rational map from the open positroid variety to an algebraic torus, given by certain Plücker coordinates which are expected to be a cluster in a cluster structure. This paper clarifies the relationship between these two maps, which has been ambiguous since they were introduced by Postnikov in 2001. The missing ingredient supplied by this paper is a twist automorphism of the open positroid variety, which takes the target of the boundary measurement map to the domain of the (conjectural) cluster. Among other applications, this provides an inverse to the boundary measurement map, as well as Laurent formulas for twists of Plücker coordinates.

Maximal Newton points and the quantum Bruhat graph
We discuss a surprising relationship between the partially ordered set of Newton points associated to an affine Schubert cell and the quantum cohomology of the complex flag variety. The main theorem provides a combinatorial formula for the unique maximum element in this poset in terms of paths in the quantum Bruhat graph, whose vertices are indexed by elements in the finite Weyl group. Key to establishing this connection is the fact that paths in the quantum Bruhat graph encode saturated chains in the strong Bruhat order on the affine Weyl group. This correspondence is also fundamental in the work of Lam and Shimozono establishing Peterson's isomorphism between the quantum cohomology of the finite flag variety and the homology of the affine Grassmannian. One important geometric application of the present work is an inequality which provides a necessary condition for non-emptiness of certain affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine flag variety.

On the f-vectors of Gelfand-Cetlin polytopes
Published in European J. Combin., 67 (2018), 61-77 • View PublicationBIB
A Gelfand-Cetlin polytope is a convex polytope obtained as an image of certain completely integrable system on a partial flag variety. In this paper, we give an equivalent description of the face structure of a GC-polytope in terms of so called the face structure of a ladder diagram. Using our description, we obtain a partial differential equation whose solution is the exponential generating function of f-vectors of GC-polytopes. This solves the open problem (2) posed by Gusev, Kritchenko, and Timorin in [GKT].

Systems of sets of lengths: Transfer Krull monoids versus weakly Krull monoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Transfer Krull monoids are monoids which allow a weak transfer homomorphism to a commutative Krull monoid, and hence the system of sets of lengths of a transfer Krull monoid coincides with that of the associated commutative Krull monoid. We unveil a couple of new features of the system of sets of lengths of transfer Krull monoids over finite abelian groups G, and we provide a complete description of the system for all groups G having Davenport constant D(G) = 5 (these are the smallest groups for which no such descriptions were known so far). Under reasonable algebraic finiteness assumptions, sets of lengths of transfer Krull monoids and of weakly Krull monoids satisfy the Structure Theorem for Sets of Lengths. In spite of this common feature we demonstrate that systems of sets of lengths for a variety of classes of weakly Krull monoids are different from the system of sets of lengths of any transfer Krull monoid.

The geometry and combinatorics of Springer fibers
Published • View PublicationBIB
This survey paper describes Springer fibers, which are used in one of the earliest examples of a geometric representation. We will compare and contrast them with Schubert varieties, another family of subvarieties of the flag variety that play an important role in representation theory and combinatorics, but whose geometry is in many respects simpler. The end of the paper describes a way that Springer fibers and Schubert varieties are related, as well as open questions.

Hypercellular graphs: partial cubes without $Q_3^-$ as partial cube minor
We investigate the structure of isometric subgraphs of hypercubes (i.e., partial cubes) which do not contain finite convex subgraphs contractible to the 3-cube minus one vertex $Q^-_3$ (here contraction means contracting the edges corresponding to the same coordinate of the hypercube). Extending similar results for median and cellular graphs, we show that the convex hull of an isometric cycle of such a graph is gated and isomorphic to the Cartesian product of edges and even cycles. Furthermore, we show that our graphs are exactly the class of partial cubes in which any finite convex subgraph can be obtained from the Cartesian products of edges and even cycles via successive gated amalgams. This decomposition result enables us to establish a variety of results. In particular, it yields that our class of graphs generalizes median and cellular graphs, which motivates naming our graphs hypercellular. Furthermore, we show that hypercellular graphs are tope graphs of zonotopal complexes of oriented matroids. Finally, we characterize hypercellular graphs as being median-cell -- a property naturally generalizing the notion of median graphs.

Tropicalization of theta characteristics, double covers, and Prym varieties
Published in Selecta Mathematica, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We study the behavior of theta characteristics on an algebraic curve under the specialization map to a tropical curve. We show that each effective theta characteristic on the tropical curve is the specialization of $2^{g-1}$ even theta characteristics and $2^{g-1}$ odd theta characteristics. We then study the relationship between unramified double covers of a tropical curve and its theta characteristics, and use this to define the tropical Prym variety.

Beyond the Borsuk-Ulam theorem: The topological Tverberg story
Bárány's "topological Tverberg conjecture" from 1976 states that any continuous map of an $N$-simplex $Δ_N$ to $\mathbb{R}^d$, for $N\ge(d+1)(r-1)$, maps points from $r$ disjoint faces in $Δ_N$ to the same point in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The proof of this result for the case when $r$ is a prime, as well as some colored version of the same result, using the results of Borsuk-Ulam and Dold on the non-existence of equivariant maps between spaces with a free group action, were main topics of Matoušek's 2003 book "Using the Borsuk-Ulam theorem." In this paper we show how advanced equivariant topology methods allow one to go beyond the prime case of the topological Tverberg conjecture. First we explain in detail how equivariant cohomology tools (employing the Borel construction, comparison of Serre spectral sequences, Fadell-Husseini index, etc.) can be used to prove the topological Tverberg conjecture whenever $r$ is a prime power. Our presentation includes a number of improved proofs as well as new results, such as a complete determination of the Fadell-Husseini index of chessboard complexes in the prime case. Then we introduce the "constraint method," which applied to suitable "unavoidable complexes" yields a great variety of variations and corollaries to the topological Tverberg theorem, such as the "colored" and the "dimension-restricted" (Van Kampen-Flores type) versions. Both parts have provided crucial components to the recent spectacular counter-examples in high dimensions for the case when $r$ is not a prime power.

A combinatorial description of dual defects of toric varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
From a finite set in a lattice, we can define a toric variety embedded in a projective space. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the dual defect of the toric variety using the structure of the finite set as a Cayley sum with suitable conditions. We also interpret the description geometrically.
Rhombic tilings and Bott-Samelson varieties
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 146 (2018), no. 5, 1921-1935 • View PublicationBIB
S.~Elnitsky (1997) gave an elegant bijection between rhombic tilings of $2n$-gons and commutation classes of reduced words in the symmetric group on $n$ letters. P.~Magyar (1998) found an important construction of the Bott-Samelson varieties introduced by H.C.~Hansen (1973) and M.~Demazure (1974). We explain a natural connection between S.~Elnitsky's and P.~Magyar's results. This suggests using tilings to encapsulate Bott-Samelson data (in type $A$). It also indicates a geometric perspective on S.~Elnitsky's combinatorics. We also extend this construction by assigning desingularizations to the zonotopal tilings considered by B.~Tenner (2006).

Integrality of HLV kernels

We prove that the coefficients of the generating function of Hausel, Letellier, Villegas, and its recent generalization by Carlsson and Villegas, which according to various conjectures should compute mixed Hodge numbers of character varieties and moduli spaces of Higgs bundles of curves of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ with integer coefficients for any $g,n\geq 0$.
