Full asymptotic expansion for Polya structures
In order to obtain the full asymptotic expansion for Polya trees, i.e. rooted unlabelled and non-plane trees, Flajolet and Sedgewick observed that their specification could be seen as a slight disturbance of the functional equation satisfied by the Cayley tree function. Such an approach highlights the complicated formal expressions with some combinatorial explanation. They initiated this process in their book but they spared the technical part by only exhibiting the first- order approximation. In this paper we exhibit the university of the method and obtain the full asymptotic expansions for several varieties of trees. We then focus on three different varieties of rooted, unlabelled and non-plane trees, Polya trees, rooted identity trees and hierarchies, in order to calculate explicitly their full singular expansions and asymptotic expansions.

Convex Polytopes for the Central Degeneration of the Affine Grassmannian
Published in Advances in Mathematics 348 (2019) 541-582 • View PublicationBIB
We study the algebraic geometry and combinatorics of the central degeneration (the degeneration that shows up in local models of Shimura varieties and Gaitsgory's central sheaves) in type A. More specifically, we elucidate the central degeneration of semi-infinite orbits and explain its relations with Levi restriction. Also, we discuss the central degeneration of Mirkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$-Vilonen cycles in the affine Grassmannian, and the corresponding transformations of Mirkovi$\acute{\text{c}}$-Vilonen polytopes. In addition, we shed some light on the geometry of Iwahori MV cycles in the affine Grassmannian and generalized MV cycles in the affine flag variety, which are closely related to Demazure modules and affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties respectively.

Faithful tropicalization of hypertoric varieties
The hypertoric variety $\mathfrak{M}_{\mathcal{A}}$ defined by an affine arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ admits a natural tropicalization, induced by its embedding in a Lawrence toric variety. We explicitly describe the polyhedral structure of this tropicalization. Using a recent result of Gubler, Rabinoff, and Werner, we prove that there is a continuous section of the tropicalization map.
A Chevalley formula for the equivariant quantum K-theory of cominuscule varieties
We prove a type-uniform Chevalley formula for multiplication with divisor classes in the equivariant quantum $K$-theory ring of any cominuscule flag variety $G/P$. We also prove that multiplication with divisor classes determines the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of arbitrary flag varieties. These results prove a conjecture of Gorbounov and Korff concerning the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of Grassmannians of Lie type A.

Cohomology of cluster varieties. I. Locally acyclic case
Published in Alg. Number Th. 16 (2022) 179-230 • View PublicationBIB
We initiate a systematic study of the cohomology of cluster varieties. We introduce the Louise property for cluster algebras that holds for all acyclic cluster algebras, and for most cluster algebras arising from marked surfaces. For cluster varieties satisfying the Louise property and of full rank, we show that the cohomology satisfies the curious Lefschetz property of Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas, and that the mixed Hodge structure is split over the rationals. We give a complete description of the highest weight part of the mixed Hodge structure of these cluster varieties, and develop the notion of a standard differential form on a cluster variety. We show that the point counts of these cluster varieties over finite fields can be expressed in terms of Dirichlet characters. Under an additional integrality hypothesis, the point counts are shown to be polynomials in the order of the finite field.

Convergence criteria for FI$_\mathcal{W}$-algebras and polynomial statistics on maximal tori in type B/C
Published in Advances in Mathematics 310 (2017): 121-158 • Search Publication
A result of Lehrer describes a beautiful relationship between topological and combinatorial data on certain families of varieties with actions of finite reflection groups. His formula relates the cohomology of complex varieties to point counts on associated varieties over finite fields. Church, Ellenberg, and Farb use their representation stability results on the cohomology of flag manifolds, together with classical results on the cohomology rings, to prove asymptotic stability for "polynomial" statistics on associated varieties over finite fields. In this paper we investigate the underlying algebraic structure of these families' cohomology rings that makes the formulas convergent. We prove that asymptotic stability holds in general for subquotients of FI$_\mathcal{W}$-algebras finitely generated in degree at most one, a result that is in a sense sharp. As a consequence, we obtain convergence results for polynomial statistics on the set of maximal tori in $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(\overline{F_q})$ and $\mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}(\overline{F_q})$ that are invariant under the Frobenius morphism. Our results also give a new proof of the stability theorem for invariant maximal tori in $\mathrm{GL}_n(\overline{F_q})$ due to Church-Ellenberg-Farb.

Chern class of Schubert cells in the flag manifold and related algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss a relationship between Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds, Fomin-Kirillov algebra, and the generalized nil-Hecke algebra. We show that nonnegativity conjecture in Fomin-Kirillov algebra implies the nonnegativity of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds for type A. Motivated by this connection, we also prove that the (equivariant) Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells in flag manifolds are certain summations of the structure constants of the equivariant cohomology of the Bott-Samelson varieties. We also discuss the refined positivity conjectures of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes for Schubert cells motivated by the nonnegativity conjecture in Fomin-Kirillov algebra.

Stability versions of Erdős-Ko-Rado type theorems, via isoperimetry
Published • View PublicationBIB
Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) type theorems yield upper bounds on the sizes of families of sets, subject to various intersection requirements on the sets in the family. Stability versions of such theorems assert that if the size of a family is close to the maximum possible size, then the family itself must be close (in some appropriate sense) to a maximum-sized family. In this paper, we present an approach to obtaining stability versions of EKR-type theorems, via isoperimetric inequalities for subsets of the hypercube. Our approach is rather general, and allows the leveraging of a wide variety of exact EKR-type results into strong stability versions of these results, without going into the proofs of the original results. We use this approach to obtain tight stability versions of the EKR theorem itself and of the Ahlswede-Khachatrian theorem on $t$-intersecting families of $k$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots.n\}$ (for $k < \frac{n}{t+1}$), and to show that, somewhat surprisingly, all these results hold when the intersection requirement is replaced by a much weaker requirement. Other examples include stability versions of Frankl's recent result on the Erdős matching conjecture, the Ellis-Filmus-Friedgut proof of the Simonovits-Sós conjecture, and various EKR-type results on $r$-wise (cross)-$t$-intersecting families.

Distinct and repeated distances on a surface and incidences between points and spheres
In this paper we show that the number of distinct distances determined by a set of $n$ points on a constant-degree two-dimensional algebraic variety $V$ (i.e., a surface) in $\mathbb R^3$ is at least $Ω\left(n^{7/9}/{\rm polylog} \,n\right)$. This bound is significantly larger than the conjectured bound $Ω(n^{2/3})$ for general point sets in $\mathbb R^3$. We also show that the number of unit distances determined by $n$ points on a surface $V$, as above, is $O(n^{4/3})$, a bound that matches the best known planar bound, and is worst-case tight in 3-space. This is in sharp contrast with the best known general bound $O(n^{3/2})$ for points in three dimensions. To prove these results, we establish an improved upper bound for the number of incidences between a set $P$ of $m$ points and a set $S$ of $n$ spheres, of arbitrary radii, in $\mathbb R^3$, provided that the points lie on an algebraic surface $V$ of constant degree, which does not have linear or spherical components. Specifically, the bound is $$ O\left( m^{2/3}n^{2/3} + m^{1/2}n^{7/8}\log^β(m^4/n) + m + n + \sum_{c} |P_{c}|\cdot |S_{c}| \right) , $$ where the constant of proportionality and the constant exponent $β$ depend on the degree of $V$, and where the sum ranges over all circles $c$ that are fully contained in $V$, so that, for each such $c$, $P_c = P\cap c$ and $S_c$ is the set of the spheres of $S$ that contain $c$. In addition, $\sum_{c} |P_{c}| = O(m)$ and $\sum_{c} |S_{c}| = O(n)$. This bound too improves upon earlier known bounds. These have been obtained for arbitrary point sets but only under severe restrictions about the spheres, which are dropped in our result. Another interesting application of our result is an incidence bound for arbitrary points and spheres in 3-space, where we improve and generalize the previous work of Apfelbaum and Sharir[AS].

Some results on chromatic number as a function of triangle count
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 33(1), pp. 546-563 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
A variety of powerful extremal results have been shown for the chromatic number of triangle-free graphs. Three noteworthy bounds are in terms of the number of vertices, edges, and maximum degree given by Poljak \& Tuza (1994), and Johansson. There have been comparatively fewer works extending these types of bounds to graphs with a small number of triangles. One noteworthy exception is a result of Alon et. al (1999) bounding the chromatic number for graphs with low degree and few triangles per vertex; this bound is nearly the same as for triangle-free graphs. This type of parametrization is much less rigid, and has appeared in dozens of combinatorial constructions. In this paper, we show a similar type of result for $χ(G)$ as a function of the number of vertices $n$, the number of edges $m$, as well as the triangle count (both local and global measures). Our results smoothly interpolate between the generic bounds true for all graphs and bounds for triangle-free graphs. Our results are tight for most of these cases; we show how an open problem regarding fractional chromatic number and degeneracy in triangle-free graphs can resolve the small remaining gap in our bounds.

Complete Homogeneous Varieties via Representation Theory
Given an algebraic variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$ with stabilizer $H$, the quotient $PGL_{N+1}/H$ can be interpreted a parameter space for all $PGL_{N+1}$-translates of $X$. We define $X$ to be a $\textit{homogeneous variety}$ if $H$ acts on it transitively, and satisfies a few other properties, such as $H$ being semisimple. Some examples of homogeneous varieties are quadric hypersurfaces, rational normal curves, and Veronese and Segre embeddings. In this case, we construct new compactifications of the parameter spaces $PGL_{N+1}/H$, obtained compactifying $PGL_{N+1}$ to the classically known space of \textit{complete collineations}, and taking the G.I.T. quotient by $H$, and we will call the result space of \textit{complete homogeneous varieties}; this extends the same construction for quadric hypersurfaces in [36]. We establish a few properties of these spaces: in particular, we find a formula for the volume of divisors that depends only on the dimension of $H$-invariants in irreducible representations of $SL_{N+1}$. We then develop some tools in invariant theory, combinatorics and spline approximation to calculate such invariants, and carry out the entire calculations for the case of $SL_2$-invariants in irreducible representations of $SL_4$, that gives us explicit values for the volume function in the case of $X$ being a twisted cubic. Afterwards, we focus our attention on the case of twisted cubics, giving a more explicit description of these compactifications, including the relation with the previously known moduli spaces. In the end, we make some conjectures about how the volume function might be used in solving some enumerative problems.

We propose an algorithm to compute the GIT-fan for torus actions on affine varieties with symmetries. The algorithm combines computational techniques from commutative algebra, convex geometry and group theory. We have implemented our algorithm in the Singular library gitfan.lib. Using our implementation, we compute the Mori chamber decomposition of the cone of movable divisors of $\bar{M}_{0,6}$.

Brill-Noether varieties of k-gonal curves
Published in Adv. Math. 312 (2017), 46-63 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a general curve of fixed gonality k and genus g. We propose an estimate for the dimension of the variety $W^r_d(C)$ of special linear series on C, by solving an analogous problem in tropical geometry. Using work of Coppens and Martens, we prove that this estimate is exactly correct if k is at least g/5 + 2, and is an upper bound in all other cases. We also completely characterize the cases in which $W^r_d(C)$ has the same dimension as for a general curve of genus g.
Jigsaw percolation on random hypergraphs
The jigsaw percolation process on graphs was introduced by Brummitt, Chatterjee, Dey, and Sivakoff as a model of collaborative solutions of puzzles in social networks. Percolation in this process may be viewed as the joint connectedness of two graphs on a common vertex set. Our aim is to extend a result of Bollobás, Riordan, Slivken, and Smith concerning this process to hypergraphs for a variety of possible definitions of connectedness. In particular, we determine the asymptotic order of the critical threshold probability for percolation when both hypergraphs are chosen binomially at random.

On the combinatorics of exact Lagrangian surfaces
We study Weinstein 4-manifolds which admit Lagrangian skeleta given by attaching disks to a surface along a collection of simple closed curves. In terms of the curves describing one such skeleton, we describe surgeries that preserve the ambient Weinstein manifold, but change the skeleton. The surgeries can be iterated to produce more such skeleta --- in many cases, infinitely many more. Each skeleton is built around a Lagrangian surface. Passing to the Fukaya category, the skeletal surgeries induce cluster transformations on the spaces of rank one local systems on these surfaces, and noncommutative analogues of cluster transformations on the spaces of higher rank local systems. In particular, the problem of producing and distinguishing such Lagrangians maps to a combination of combinatorial-geometric questions about curve configurations on surfaces and algebraic questions about exchange graphs of cluster algebras. Conversely, this expands the dictionary relating the cluster theory of character varieties, positroid strata, and related spaces to the symplectic geometry of Lagrangian fillings of Legendrian knots, by incorporating cluster charts more general than those associated to bicolored surface graphs.

The Betti numbers of regular Hessenberg varieties are palindromic
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently Brosnan and Chow have proven a conjecture of Shareshian and Wachs describing a representation of the symmetric group on the cohomology of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$. A key component of their argument is that the Betti numbers of regular Hessenberg varieties for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ are palindromic. In this paper, we extend this result to all reductive algebraic groups, proving that the Betti numbers of regular Hessenberg varieties are palindromic.

Analytic number theory for 0-cycles
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 166 (2019) 123-146 • View PublicationBIB
There is a well-known analogy between integers and polynomials over $F_q$, and a vast literature on analytic number theory for polynomials. From a geometric point of view, polynomials are equivalent to effective 0-cycles on the affine line. This leads one to ask: Can the analogy between integers and polynomials be extended to 0-cycles on more general varieties? In this paper we study prime factorization of effective 0-cycles on an arbitrary connected variety $V$ over $F_q$, emphasizing the analogy between integers and 0-cycles. For example, inspired by the works of Granville and Rhoades, we prove that the prime factors of 0-cycles are typically Poisson distributed.

Potential Methods for Extending Galvin and Jónsson's Characterization of Distributive Sublattices of Free Lattices
In 1959, F.Galvin and B.Jonsson characterized distributive sublattices of free lattices in their paper. In this paper, I will create new proofs to a portion of Galvin and Jónsson's results. Based on these new proofs, I will explore possible generalizations of F.Galvin and B.Jónsson's work by defining \emph{spanning pairs} and proving partial results which may help with analysing finite width sublattices of free lattices; and by making some new observations on finitely generated lattices over semidistributive varieties. The work done in this paper may assist in attacking the following long-standing open problem: Which countable lattices are isomorphic to a sublattice of a free lattice?
The chromatic number of finite type-graphs
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory B 122 (2017), 877-896 • View PublicationBIB
By a finite type-graph we mean a graph whose set of vertices is the set of all $k$-subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ for some integers $n\ge k\ge 1$, and in which two such sets are adjacent if and only if they realise a certain order type specified in advance. Examples of such graphs have been investigated in a great variety of contexts in the literature with particular attention being paid to their chromatic number. In recent joint work with Tomasz Łuczak, two of the authors embarked on a systematic study of the chromatic numbers of such type-graphs, formulated a general conjecture determining this number up to a multiplicative factor, and proved various results of this kind. In this article we fully prove this conjecture.
