Wreath products and projective system of non Schurian association schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A wreath product is a method to construct an association scheme from two association schemes. We determine the automorphism group of a wreath product. We show a known result that a wreath product is Schurian if and only if both components are Schurian, which yields large families of non-Schurian association schemes and non-Schurian $S$-rings. We also study iterated wreath products. Kernel schemes by Martin and Stinson are shown to be iterated wreath products of class-one association schemes. The iterated wreath products give examples of projective systems of non-Schurian association schemes, with an explicit description of primitive idempotents.

Derangements in wreath products of permutation groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite group $G$ acting on a set $X$ let $δ_k(G,X)$ denote the proportion of elements in $G$ that have exactly $k$ fixed points in $X$. Let $\mathrm{S}_n$ denote the symmetric group acting on $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$. For $A\le\mathrm{S}_m$ and $B\le\mathrm{S}_n$, the permutational wreath product $A\wr B$ has two natural actions and we give formulas for both, $δ_k(A\wr B,[m]{\times}[n])$ and $δ_k(A\wr B,[m]^{[n]})$. We prove that for $k=0$ the values of these proportions are dense in the intervals $[δ_0(B,[n]),1]$ and $[δ_0(A,[m]),1]$. Among further result, we provide estimates for $δ_0(G,[m]^{[n]})$ for subgroups $G\leq \mathrm{S}_m\wr\mathrm{S}_n$ containing $\mathrm{A}_m^{[n]}$.

Dead ends on wreath products and lamplighter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any finite group $A$ and any finitely generated group $B$, we prove that the corresponding lamplighter group $A\wr B$ admits a standard generating set with unbounded depth, and that if $B$ is abelian then the above is true for every standard generating set. This generalizes the case where $B=\mathbb{Z}$ together with its cyclic generator due to Cleary and Taback. When $B=H*K$ is the free product of two finite groups $H$ and $K$, we characterize which standard generators of the associated lamplighter group have unbounded depth in terms of a geometrical constant related to the Cayley graphs of $H$ and $K$. In particular, we find differences with the one-dimensional case: the lamplighter group over the free product of two sufficiently large finite cyclic groups has uniformly bounded depth with respect to some standard generating set.

On Graphs, Groups and Geometry
A metric space (X,d) is declared to be natural if (X,d) determines an up to isomorphism unique group structure (X,+) on the set X such that all the group translations and group inversion are isometries. A group is called natural if it emerges like this from a natural metric. A simple graph X is declared to be natural if (X,d) with geodesic metric d is natural. We look here at some examples and some general statements like that the graphical regular representations of a finite group is always a natural graphs or that the direct product on groups or the Shannon product of finite graphs preserves the property of being natural. The semi-direct product of finite natural groups is natural too as they are represented by Zig-Zag products of suitable Cayley graphs. It follows that wreath products preserve natural groups. The Rubik cube for example is natural. Also free products of finitely generated natural groups are natural. A major theme is that non-natural groups often can be upgraded to become natural by extending them to become Coxeter groups. Examples of non-natural groups are cyclic groups whose order is divisible by 4, the quaternion group, the integers, the lamplighter group, the free groups or the group of p-adic integers. The prototype feature is to extend the integers and get the infinite dihedral group, replacing the single generator by two free reflections. We conclude with a short discussion of the hypothesis of using the dihedral group as a physical time in dynamical system theory.

Lengths of Cycles in Generalized Pancake Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider the lengths of cycles that can be embedded on the edges of the generalized pancake graphs which are the Cayley graph of the generalized symmetric group $S(m,n)$, generated by prefix reversals. The generalized symmetric group $S(m,n)$ is the wreath product of the cyclic group of order $m$ and the symmetric group of order $n!$. Our main focus is the underlying \emph{undirected} graphs, denoted by $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$. In the cases when the cyclic group has one or two elements, these graphs are isomorphic to the pancake graphs and burnt pancake graphs, respectively. We prove that when the cyclic group has three elements, $\mathbb{P}_3(n)$ has cycles of all possible lengths, thus resembling a similar property of pancake graphs and burnt pancake graphs. Moreover, $\mathbb{P}_4(n)$ has all the even-length cycles. We utilize these results as base cases and show that if $m>2$ is even, $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ has all cycles of even length starting from its girth to a Hamiltonian cycle. Moreover, when $m>2$ is odd, $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ has cycles of all lengths starting from its girth to a Hamiltonian cycle. We furthermore show that the girth of $\mathbb{P}_m(n)$ is $\min\{m,6\}$ if $m\geq3$, thus complementing the known results for $m=1,2.$
The generalized X-join of Cayley graphs
As a main result of this paper we give conditions under which the generalized $X$-join of Cayley graphs is a Cayley graph. In particular, we show that $X$-join of isomorphic Cayley graphs is a Cayley grpah. To do this, new properties for a generalized wreath product of permutation groups are given in the case where the base group acts regularly. These are used to give conditions for the generalized wreath product to contain a regular subgroup, which are then applied to generalized $X$-joins of Cayley graphs. Along the way, it is shown that the generalized $X$-join of isomorphic Cayley graphs will always be a vertex transitive graph.

A new infinite family of star normal quotient graphs of twisted wreath type
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct the first infinite families of locally arc transitive graphs with the property that the automorphism group has two orbits on vertices and is quasiprimitive on exactly one orbit, of twisted wreath type. This work contributes to Giudici, Li and Praeger's program for the classification of locally arc transitive graphs by showing that the star normal quotient twisted wreath category also contains infinitely many graphs.

Wreath Macdonald polynomials at q=t as characters of rational Cherednik algebras
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 375 (2022), 8945-8968 • View PublicationBIB
Using the theory of Macdonald, Gordon showed that the graded characters of the simple modules for the restricted rational Cherednik algebra by Etingof and Ginzburg associated to the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ are given by plethystically transformed Macdonald polynomials specialized at q=t. We generalize this to restricted rational Cherednik algebras of wreath product groups $C_\ell \wr \mathfrak{S}_n$ and prove that the corresponding characters are given by a specialization of the wreath Macdonald polynomials defined by Haiman.
Fire retainment on Cayley graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics Discrete Mathematics, Volume 346, Issue 1, January 2023, 113176 • View PublicationBIB
We study the fire-retaining problem on groups, a quasi-isometry invariant introduced by Martínez-Pedroza and Prytula [8], related to the firefighter problem. We prove that any Cayley graph with degree-$d$ polynomial growth does not satisfy $\{f(n)\}$-retainment, for any $f(n) = o(n^{d-2})$, matching the upper bound given for the firefighter problem for these graphs. In the exponential growth regime we prove general lower bounds for direct products and wreath products. These bounds are tight, and show that for exponential-growth groups a wide variety of behaviors is possible. In particular, we construct, for any $d\geq 1$, groups that satisfy $\{n^{d}\}$-retainment but not $o(n^d)$-retainment, as well as groups that do not satisfy sub-exponential retainment.

On maximum intersecting sets in direct and wreath product of groups
For a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $V$, a subset $I$ of $G$ is said to be an intersecting set if for every pair of elements $g,h\in I$ there exists $v \in V$ such that $g(v) = h(v)$. The intersection density $ρ(G)$ of a transitive permutation group $G$ is the maximum value of the quotient $|I|/|G_v|$ where $G_v$ is a stabilizer of a point $v\in V$ and $I$ runs over all intersecting sets in $G$. If $G_v$ is the largest intersecting set in $G$ then $G$ is said to have the Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR)-property, and moreover, $G$ has the strict-EKR-property if every intersecting set of maximum size in $G$ is a coset of a point stabilizer. Intersecting sets in $G$ coincide with independent sets in the so-called derangement graph $Γ_G$, defined as the Cayley graph on $G$ with connection set consisting of all derangements, that is, fixed-point free elements of $G$. In this paper a conjecture regarding the existence of transitive permutation groups whose derangement graphs are complete multipartite graphs, posed by Meagher, Razafimahatratra and Spiga in [J.Combin. Theory Ser. A 180 (2021), 105390], is proved. The proof uses direct product of groups. Questions regarding maximum intersecting sets in direct and wreath products of groups and the (strict)-EKR-property of these group products are also investigated. In addition, some errors appearing in the literature on this topic are corrected.

On characters of wreath products

A character identity which relates irreducible character values of the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$ to those of the symmetric group $S_{2n}$ was recently proved by Lübeck and Prasad. Their proof is algebraic and involves Lie theory. We present a short combinatorial proof of this identity, as well as a generalization to other wreath products.

The algebra of conjugacy classes of the wreath product of a finite group with the symmetric group
Published in Rocky Mountain Journal of Mathematics 53(2) (2023) 561-577 • View PublicationBIB
For a finite group $G,$ we define the concept of $G$-partial permutation and use it to show that the structure coefficients of the center of the wreath product $G\wr \mathcal{S}_n$ algebra are polynomials in $n$ with non-negative integer coefficients. Our main tool is a combinatorial algebra which projects onto the center of the group $G\wr \mathcal{S}_n$ algebra for every $n.$ This generalizes the Ivanov and Kerov method to prove the polynomiality property for the structure coefficients of the center of the symmetric group algebra.

The Hamilton-Waterloo problem on wreath product graph $C_m \wr K_{16}$
The Hamilton-Waterloo problem is a problem of graph factorization. The Hamilton-Waterloo problem HWP$(H;m,n;α,β)$ asks for a $2$-factorization of $H$ containing $α$ $C_m$-factors and $β$ $C_n$-factors. In this paper, we almost completely solve the Hamilton-Waterloo problem on wreath product graph $C_m \wr K_{16}$ with $C_{16}$-factors and $C_m$-factors for an odd integer $m$.

The diagonal graph
According to the O'Nan--Scott Theorem, a finite primitive permutation group either preserves a structure of one of three types (affine space, Cartesian lattice, or diagonal semilattice), or is almost simple. However, diagonal groups are a much larger class than those occurring in this theorem. For any positive integer $m$ and group $G$ (finite or infinite), there is a diagonal semilattice, a sub-semilattice of the lattice of partitions of a set $Ω$, whose automorphism group is the corresponding diagonal group. Moreover, there is a graph (the diagonal graph), bearing much the same relation to the diagonal semilattice and group as the Hamming graph does to the Cartesian lattice and the wreath product of symmetric groups. Our purpose here, after a brief introduction to this semilattice and graph, is to establish some properties of this graph. The diagonal graph $Γ_D(G,m)$ is a Cayley graph for the group~$G^m$, and so is vertex-transitive. We establish its clique number in general and its chromatic number in most cases, with a conjecture about the chromatic number in the remaining cases. We compute the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of the graph, using a calculation of the Möbius function of the diagonal semilattice. We also compute some other graph parameters and symmetry properties of the graph. We believe that this family of graphs will play a significant role in algebraic graph theory.

Transition matrices between Young's natural and seminormal representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive a formula for the entries in the change-of-basis matrix between Young's seminormal and natural representations of the symmetric group. These entries are determined as sums over weighted paths in the weak Bruhat graph on standard tableaux, and we show that they can be computed recursively as the weighted sum of at most two previously-computed entries in the matrix. We generalize our results to work for affine Hecke algebras, Ariki-Koike algebras, Iwahori-Hecke algebras, and complex reflection groups given by the wreath product of a finite cyclic group with the symmetric group.

Powers in the wreath product of $G$ with $S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we compute powers in the wreath product $G\wr S_n$, for any finite group $G$. For $r\geq 2$, a prime, consider $ω_r: G\wr S_n\to G\wr S_n$ defined by $g \mapsto g^r$. Let $P_{r}(G\wr S_n)=\frac{|ω_r(G\wr S_n)|}{|G|^n n!}$, be the probability that a randomly chosen element in $G\wr S_n$ is a $r^{th}$ power. We prove, $P_r(G\wr S_{n+1})=P_r(G\wr S_n)$ for all $n\not \equiv -1(\text{mod } r)$ if, order of $G$ is coprime to $r$. We also give a formula for the number of conjugacy classes that are $r^{th}$ powers in $G\wr S_n$.

Signed Mahonian on Parabolic Quotients of Colored Permutation Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the generating polynomial of the flag major index with each one-dimensional character, called signed Mahonian polynomial, over the colored permutation group, the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. Using the insertion lemma of Han and Haglund-Loehr-Remmel and a signed extension established by Eu et al., we derive the signed Mahonian polynomial over the quotients of parabolic subgroups of the colored permutation group, for a variety of systems of coset representatives in terms of subsequence restrictions. This generalizes the related work over parabolic quotients of the symmetric group due to Caselli as well as to Eu et al. As a byproduct, we derive a product formula that generalizes Biagioli's result about the signed Mahonian on the even signed permutation groups.

Generating functions for monomial characters of wreath products $\mathbb Z/d \mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ denote the wreath product of the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z$ with the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. We define generating functions for monomial (induced one-dimensional) characters of $\mathbb Z/d\mathbb Z \wr \mathfrak S_n$ and express these in terms of determinants and permanents. This extends work of Littlewood ({\em The Theory of Group Characters and Representations of Groups}, 1940) and Merris and Watkins ({\em Linear Algebra Appl.}, {\bf 64}, 1985) on generating functions for the monomial characters of $\mathfrak S_n$.
