Halin's Infinite Ray Theorems: Complexity and Reverse Mathematics: Version E
Published • View PublicationBIB
Halin [1965] proved that if a graph has $n$ many pairwise disjoint rays for each $n$ then it has infinitely many pairwise disjoint rays. We analyze the complexity of this and other similar results in terms of computable and proof theoretic complexity. The statement of Halin's theorem and the construction proving it seem very much like standard versions of compactness arguments such as König's Lemma. Those results, while not computable, are relatively simple. They only use arithmetic procedures or, equivalently, finitely many iterations of the Turing jump. We show that several Halin type theorems are much more complicated. They are among the theorems of hyperarithmetic analysis. Such theorems imply the ability to iterate the Turing jump along any computable well ordering. Several important logical principles in this class have been extensively studied beginning with work of Kreisel, H. Friedman, Steel and others in the 1960s and 1970s. Until now, only one purely mathematical example was known. Our work provides many more and so answers Question 30 of Montalbán's Open Questions in Reverse Mathematics [2011]. Some of these theorems including ones in Halin [1965] are also shown to have unusual proof theoretic strength as well.

Finite simple characteristic quotients of the free group of rank 2
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we describe how to explicitly construct infinitely many finite simple groups as characteristic quotients of the rank 2 free group $F_2$. This shows that a "baby" version of the Wiegold conjecture fails for $F_2$, and provides counterexamples to two conjectures in the theory of noncongruence subgroups of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. Our main result explicitly produces, for every prime power $q\ge 7$, the groups $\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $\text{SU}_3(\mathbb{F}_q)$ as characteristic quotients of $F_2$. Our strategy is to study specializations of the Burau representation for the braid group $B_4$, exploiting an exceptional relationship between $F_2$ and $B_4$ first observed by Dyer, Formanek, and Grossman. Weisfeiler's strong approximation theorem guarantees that our specializations are surjective for infinitely many primes, but it is not effective. To make our result effective, we give another proof of surjectivity via a careful analysis of the maximal subgroup structures of $\text{SL}_3(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $\text{SU}_3(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We also show that our examples of $\text{PSL}_3(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $\text{PSU}_3(\mathbb{F}_q)$ are minimal in the sense that no group of the form $\text{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is a characteristic quotient of $F_2$.

The harmonic strength of shells of lattices and weighted theta series
This is the write-up of a talk given in RIMS conference ``Analytic and arithmetic aspects of automorphic representations", where I outlined two kinds of different results related to the D4 lattice, obtained in a joint work with Hirao and Nozaki. In general, from the design theoretical viewpoints, we are interested in determining the harmonic strength of finite subsets on the unit sphere. When considering the shells of a lattice, this problem shifts to the non-vanishing problem of the Fourier coefficients of elliptic cusp forms. Various instances, mostly from root lattices, are listed in this note.

Distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [Distrance-regular Cayley graphs on dihedral groups, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 97 (2007) 14--33], Miklavič and Potočnik proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as an extension of the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, all distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ with $p$ being an odd prime are determined. It is shown that every such graph is isomorphic to a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or the line graph of a transversal design $TD(r,p)$ with $2\leq r\leq p-1$.

Polyhedral combinatorics of bisectors
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any polyhedral norm, the bisector of two points is a polyhedral complex. We study combinatorial aspects of this complex. We investigate the sensitivity of the presence of labelled maximal cells in the bisector relative to the position of the two points. We thereby extend work of Criado, Joswig and Santos (2022) who showed that for the tropical distance function the presence of maximal cells is encoded by a polyhedral fan, the bisection fan. We initiate the study of bisection cones and bisection fans with respect to arbitrary polyhedral norms. In particular, we show that the bisection fan always exists for polyhedral norms in two dimensions. Furthermore, we determine the bisection fan of the $\ell_{1}$-norm and the $\ell_{\infty}$-norm as well as the discrete Wasserstein distance in arbitrary dimensions. Intricate combinatorial structures, such as the resonance arrangement, make their appearance. We apply our results to obtain bounds on the combinatorial complexity of the bisectors.
New Hindman spaces
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 150 (2022), 891-902 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a method that allows to turn topological questions about Hindman spaces into purely combinatorial questions about the Katětov order of ideals on $\mathbb{N}$. We also provide two applications of the method. (1) We characterize $F_σ$ ideals $\mathcal{I}$ for which there is a Hindman space which is not an $\mathcal{I}$-space under the continuum hypothesis. This reduces a topological question of Albin L. Jones about consistency of existence of a Hindman space which is not van der Waerden to the question whether the ideal of all non AP-sets is not below the ideal of all non IP-sets in the Katětov order. (2) Under the continuum hypothesis, we construct a Hindman space which is not an $\mathcal{I}_{1/n}$-space. This answers a question posed by Jana Flašková at the 22nd Summer Conference on Topology and its Applications.
Mutual visibility in hypercube-like graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph and $X\subseteq V(G)$. Then, vertices $x$ and $y$ of $G$ are $X$-visible if there exists a shortest $u,v$-path where no internal vertices belong to $X$. The set $X$ is a mutual-visibility set of $G$ if every two vertices of $X$ are $X$-visible, while $X$ is a total mutual-visibility set if any two vertices from $V(G)$ are $X$-visible. The cardinality of a largest mutual-visibility set (resp. total mutual-visibility set) is the mutual-visibility number (resp. total mutual-visibility number) $μ(G)$ (resp. $μ_t(G)$) of $G$. It is known that computing $μ(G)$ is an NP-complete problem, as well as $μ_t(G)$. In this paper, we study the (total) mutual-visibility in hypercube-like networks (namely, hypercubes, cube-connected cycles, and butterflies). Concerning computing $μ(G)$, we provide approximation algorithms for both hypercubes and cube-connected cycles, while we give an exact formula for butterflies. Concerning computing $μ_t(G)$ (in the literature, already studied in hypercubes), we provide exact formulae for both cube-connected cycles and butterflies.

A Decomposition of Cylindric Partitions and Cylindric Partitions into Distinct Parts
We show that cylindric partitions are in one-to-one correspondence with a pair which has an ordinary partition and a colored partition into distinct parts. Then, we show the general form of the generating function for cylindric partitions into distinct parts and give some examples. We prove part of a conjecture by Corteel, Dousse, and Uncu. The approaches and proofs are elementary and combinatorial.

On linear preservers of permanental rank
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 680 (2024): 325-340 • View PublicationBIB
Let ${\rm Mat}_n(\mathbb{F})$ denote the set of square $n\times n$ matrices over a field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic different from two. The permanental rank ${\rm prk}\,(A)$ of a matrix $A \in{\rm Mat}_{n}(\mathbb{F})$ is the size of the maximal square submatrix in $A$ with nonzero permanent. By $Λ^{k}$ and $Λ^{\leq k}$ we denote the subsets of matrices $A \in {\rm Mat}_{n}(\mathbb{F})$ with ${\rm prk}\,(A) = k$ and ${\rm prk}\,(A) \leq k$, respectively. In this paper for each $1 \leq k \leq n-1$ we obtain a complete characterization of linear maps $T: {\rm Mat}_{n}(\mathbb{F}) \to {\rm Mat}_{n}(\mathbb{F})$ satisfying $T(Λ^{\leq k}) = Λ^{\leq k}$ or bijective linear maps satisfying $T(Λ^{\leq k}) \subseteq Λ^{\leq k}$. Moreover, we show that if $\mathbb{F}$ is an infinite field, then $Λ^{k}$ is Zariski dense in $Λ^{\leq k}$ and apply this to describe such bijective linear maps satisfying $T(Λ^{k}) \subseteq Λ^{k}$.
Storage codes and recoverable systems on lines and grids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A storage code is an assignment of symbols to the vertices of a connected graph $G(V,E)$ with the property that the value of each vertex is a function of the values of its neighbors, or more generally, of a certain neighborhood of the vertex in $G$. In this work we introduce a new construction method of storage codes, enabling one to construct new codes from known ones via an interleaving procedure driven by resolvable designs. We also study storage codes on $\mathbb Z$ and ${\mathbb Z}^2$ (lines and grids), finding closed-form expressions for the capacity of several one and two-dimensional systems depending on their recovery set, using connections between storage codes, graphs, anticodes, and difference-avoiding sets.
A precise condition for independent transversals in bipartite covers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a bipartite graph $H=(V=V_A\cup V_B,E)$ in which any vertex in $V_A$ (resp.~$V_B$) has degree at most $D_A$ (resp.~$D_B$), suppose there is a partition of $V$ that is a refinement of the bipartition $V_A\cup V_B$ such that the parts in $V_A$ (resp.~$V_B$) have size at least $k_A$ (resp.~$k_B$). We prove that the condition $D_A/k_B+D_B/k_A\le 1$ is sufficient for the existence of an independent set of vertices of $H$ that is simultaneously transversal to the partition, and show moreover that this condition is sharp. This result is a bipartite refinement of two well-known results on independent transversals, one due to the second author and the other due to Szabó and Tardos.

Distribution of the number of zeros of polynomials over a finite field
Published in Involve 18 (2025) 707-718 • View PublicationBIB
We study the probability distribution of the number of zeros of multivariable polynomials with bounded degree over a finite field. We find the probability generating function for each set of bounded degree polynomials. In particular, in the single variable case, we show that as the degree of the polynomials and the order of the field simultaneously approach infinity, the distribution converges to a Poisson distribution.

Expected Number of Dice Rolls Until an Increasing Run of Three
A closed form is found for the expected number of rolls of a fair n-sided die until three consecutive increasing values are seen. The answer is rational, and the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator is given in terms of n. As n goes to infinity, the probability generating function is found for the limiting case, which is also the exponential generating function for permutations ending in a double rise and without other double rises. Thus exact values are found for the limiting expectation and variance, which are approximately 7.92437 and 27.98133 respectively.

Twin-width of graphs with tree-structured decompositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The twin-width of a graph measures its distance to co-graphs and generalizes classical width concepts such as tree-width or rank-width. Since its introduction in 2020 (Bonnet et. al. 2020), a mass of new results has appeared relating twin width to group theory, model theory, combinatorial optimization, and structural graph theory. We take a detailed look at the interplay between the twin-width of a graph and the twin-width of its components under tree-structured decompositions: We prove that the twin-width of a graph is at most twice its strong tree-width, contrasting nicely with the result of (Bonnet and Déprés 2022), which states that twin-width can be exponential in tree-width. Further, we employ the fundamental concept from structural graph theory of decomposing a graph into highly connected components, in order to obtain an optimal linear bound on the twin-width of a graph given the widths of its biconnected components. For triconnected components we obtain a linear upper bound if we add red edges to the components indicating the splits which led to the components. Extending this approach to quasi-4-connectivity, we obtain a quadratic upper bound. Finally, we investigate how the adhesion of a tree decomposition influences the twin-width of the decomposed graph.

On some extremal and probabilistic questions for tree posets
Given two posets $P,Q$ we say that $Q$ is $P$-free if $Q$ does not contain a copy of $P$. The size of the largest $P$-free family in $2^{[n]}$, denoted by $La(n,P)$, has been extensively studied since the 1980s. We consider several related problems. Indeed, for posets $P$ whose Hasse diagrams are trees and have radius at most $2$, we prove that there are $2^{(1+o(1))La(n,P)}$ $P$-free families in $2^{[n]}$, thereby confirming a conjecture of Gerbner, Nagy, Patkós and Vizer [Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2021] in these cases. For such $P$ we also resolve the random version of the $P$-free problem, thus generalising the random version of Sperner's theorem due to Balogh, Mycroft and Treglown [Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 2014], and Collares Neto and Morris [Random Structures and Algorithms, 2016]. Additionally, we make a general conjecture that, roughly speaking, asserts that subfamilies of $2^{[n]}$ of size sufficiently above $La(n,P)$ robustly contain $P$, for any poset $P$ whose Hasse diagram is a tree.

Borel versions of the Local Lemma and LOCAL algorithms for graphs of finite asymptotic separation index
Published • View PublicationBIB
Asymptotic separation index is a parameter that measures how easily a Borel graph can be approximated by its subgraphs with finite components. In contrast to the more classical notion of hyperfiniteness, asymptotic separation index is well-suited for combinatorial applications in the Borel setting. The main result of this paper is a Borel version of the Lovász Local Lemma -- a powerful general-purpose tool in probabilistic combinatorics -- under a finite asymptotic separation index assumption. As a consequence, we show that locally checkable labeling problems that are solvable by efficient randomized distributed algorithms admit Borel solutions on bounded degree Borel graphs with finite asymptotic separation index. From this we derive a number of corollaries, for example a Borel version of Brooks's theorem for graphs with finite asymptotic separation index.

Planar networks and simple Lie groups beyond type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
The general linear group $GL_{n}$, along with its adjoint simple group $PGL_n$, can be described by means of weighted planar networks. In this paper we give a network description for simple Lie groups of types $B$ and $C$. The corresponding networks are axially symmetric modulo a sequence of cluster mutations along the axis of symmetry. We extend to this setting the result of Gekhtman, Shapiro, and Vainshtein on the Poisson property of Postnikov's boundary measurement map. We also show that $B$ and $C$ type networks with positive weights parametrize the totally nonnegative part of the respective group. Finally, we construct network parametrizations of double Bruhat cells in symplectic and odd-dimensional orthogonal groups, and identify the corresponding face weights with Fock-Goncharov cluster coordinates.

Shift Graphs, Chromatic Number and Acyclic One-Path Orientations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Shift graphs, which were introduced by Erdős and Hajnal, have been used to answer various questions in extremal graph theory. In this paper, we prove two new results using shift graphs and their induced subgraphs. 1. Recently Girao [Combinatorica2023], showed that for every graph $F$ with at least one edge, there is a constant $c_F$ such that there are graphs of arbitrarily large chromatic number and the same clique number as $F$, in which every $F$-free induced subgraph has chromatic number at most $c_F$. We significantly improve the value of the constant $c_F$ for the special case where $F$ is the complete bipartite graph $K_{a,b}$. We show that any $K_{a,b}$-free induced subgraph of the triangle-free shift graph $G_{n,2}$ has chromatic number bounded by $\mathcal{O}(\log(a+b))$. 2. An undirected simple graph $G$ is said to have the AOP Property if it can be acyclically oriented such that there is at most one directed path between any two vertices. We prove that the shift graph $G_{n,2}$ does not have the AOP property for all $n\geq 9$. Despite this, we construct induced subgraphs of shift graph $G_{n,2}$ with an arbitrarily high chromatic number and odd-girth that have the AOP property. Furthermore, we construct graphs with arbitrarily high odd-girth that do not have the AOP Property and also prove the existence of graphs with girth equal to $5$ that do not have the AOP property.

An upper bound on stability of powers of matroidal ideals
Let $R=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and $I$ be a matroidal ideal of degree $d$. Let $\astab(I)$ and $\dstab(I)$ be the smallest integers $l$ and $k$, for which $\Ass(I^l)$ and $\depth(R/I^k)$ stabilize, respectively. In this paper, we show that $\astab(I),\dstab(I)\leq\min\{d,\ell(I)\}$, where $\ell(I)$ is the analytic spread of $I$. Furthermore, by a counterexample we give a negative answer to the conjecture of Herzog and Qureshi \cite{HQ} about stability of matroidal ideals.

On the $C$-diversity of intersecting hypergraphs
Let $\mathcal{F}\subset \binom{X}{k}$ be a family consisting of $k$-subsets of the $n$-set $X$. Suppose that $\mathcal{F}$ is intersecting, i.e., $F\cap F'\neq \emptyset$ for all $F,F'\in \mathcal{F}$. Let $Δ(\mathcal{F})$ be the maximum degree of $\mathcal{F}$. For a constant $C\geq 1$ the $C$-diversity, $γ_C(\mathcal{F})$ is defined as $|\mathcal{F}|-CΔ(\mathcal{F})$. Define $\mathcal{F}_{123} =\left\{F\in \binom{X}{k}\colon |F\cap \{1,2,3\}|=2\right\}$. It has $C$-diversity $(3-2C)\binom{n-3}{k-2}$. The main result shows that for $1< C<\frac{3}{2}$ and $n\geq \frac{42}{3-2C}k$, $γ_C(\mathcal{F})\leq γ_C(\mathcal{F}_{123})$ with equality if and only if $\mathcal{F}$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}_{123}$. For the case of ordinary diversity $(C=1)$ a strong stability is proven.
