Centrally symmetric tilings of fern-cored hexagons
In this paper we enumerate the centrally symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon with a fern removed from its center. The proof is based on a variant of Kuo's graphical condensation method. An unexpected connection with the total number of tilings is established~---~when suitably normalized, the number of centrally symmetric tilings is equal to the square root of the total number of tilings. The results we present can be regarded as a new extension of the enumeration of self-complementary plane partitions that fit in a box.

It is well-known that the zero forcing number of a graph provides a lower bound on the minimum rank of a graph. In this paper we bound and characterize the zero forcing number of certain circulant graphs, including some bipartite circulants, cubic circulants, and circulants which are torus products, to obtain bounds on the minimum rank and the maximum nullity. We also evaluate when the zero forcing number will give equality.
Invariant Schreier decorations of unimodular random networks
We prove that every $2d$-regular unimodular random network carries an invariant random Schreier decoration. Equivalently, it is the Schreier coset graph of an invariant random subgroup of the free group $F_d$. As a corollary we get that every $2d$-regular graphing is the local isomorphic image of a graphing coming from a p.m.p. action of $F_d$. The key ingredients of the analogous statement for finite graphs do not generalize verbatim to the measurable setting. We find a more subtle way of adapting these ingredients and prove measurable coloring theorems for graphings along the way.
Spreading linear triple systems and expander triple systems
The existence of Steiner triple systems STS(n) of order n containing no nontrivial subsystem is well known for every admissible n. We generalize this result in two ways. First we define the expander property of 3-uniform hypergraphs and show the existence of Steiner triple systems which are almost perfect expanders. Next we define the strong and weak spreading property of linear hypergraphs, and determine the minimum size of a linear triple system with these properties, up to a small constant factor. This property is strongly connected to the connectivity of the structure and of the so-called influence maximization. We also discuss how the results are related to Erdős' conjecture on locally sparse STSs, influence maximization, subsquare-free Latin squares and possible applications in finite geometry.
Subdivision of Maps of Digital Images
With a view towards providing tools for analyzing and understanding digitized images, various notions from algebraic topology have been introduced into the setting of digital topology. In the ordinary topological setting, invariants such as the fundamental group are invariants of homotopy type. In the digital setting, however, the usual notion of homotopy leads to a very rigid invariance that does not correspond well with the topological notion of homotopy invariance. In this paper, we establish fundamental results about subdivision of maps of digital images with $1$- or $2$-dimensional domains. Our results lay the groundwork for showing that the digital fundamental group is an invariant of a much less rigid equivalence relation on digital images, that is more akin to the topological notion of homotopy invariance. Our results also lay the groundwork for defining other invariants of digital images in a way that makes them invariants of this less rigid equivalence.

What kind of reduced monomial schemes can be obtained as a Gröbner degeneration of a smooth projective variety? Our conjectured answer is: only Stanley-Reisner schemes associated to acyclic Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. This would imply, in particular, that only curves of genus zero have such a degeneration. We prove this conjecture for degrevlex orders, for elliptic curves over real number fields, for boundaries of cross-polytopes, and for leafless graphs. We discuss consequences for rational and F-rational singularities of algebras with straightening laws.
A conjecture of Verstraëte on vertex-disjoint cycles
Answering a question of Häggkvist and Scott, Verstraëte proved that every sufficiently large graph with average degree at least $k^2+19k+10$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles of consecutive even lengths. He further conjectured that the same holds for every graph $G$ with average degree at least $k^2+3k+2$. In this paper we prove this conjecture for $k\geq 19$ when $G$ is sufficiently large. We also show that for any $ε>0$ and large $k\geq k_ε$, average degree at least $k^2+3k-2+ε$ suffices, which is asymptotically tight for infinitely many graphs.
Peter-Weyl, Howe and Schur-Weyl theorems for current groups
The classical Peter-Weyl theorem describes the structure of the space of functions on a semi-simple algebraic group. On the level of characters (in type A) this boils down to the Cauchy identity for the products of Schur polynomials. We formulate and prove the analogue of the Peter-Weyl theorem for the current groups. In particular, in type A the corresponding characters identity is governed by the Cauchy identity for the products of q-Whittaker functions. We also formulate and prove a version of the Schur-Weyl theorem for current groups. The link between the Peter-Weyl and Schur-Weyl theorems is provided by the (current version of) Howe duality.
Vandermondes in superspace
Superspace of rank $n$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra with $n$ commuting generators $x_1, \dots, x_n$ and $n$ anticommuting generators $θ_1, \dots, θ_n$. We present an extension of the Vandermonde determinant to superspace which depends on a sequence $\mathbf{a} = (a_1, \dots, a_r)$ of nonnegative integers of length $r \leq n$. We use superspace Vandermondes to construct graded representations of the symmetric group. This construction recovers hook-shaped Tanisaki quotients, the coinvariant ring for the Delta Conjecture constructed by Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono, and a superspace quotient related to positroids and Chern plethysm constructed by Billey, Rhoades, and Tewari. We define a notion of partial differentiation with respect to anticommuting variables to construct doubly graded modules from superspace Vandermondes. These doubly graded modules carry a natural ring structure which satisfies a 2-dimensional version of Poincaré duality. The application of polarization operators gives rise to other bigraded modules which give a conjectural module for the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$ appearing in the Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson.
Manifold Matching Complexes
The matching complex of a graph is the simplicial complex whose vertex set is the set of edges of the graph with a face for each independent set of edges. In this paper we completely characterize the pairs (graph, matching complex) for which the matching complex is a homology manifold, with or without boundary. Except in dimension two, all of these manifolds are sphere or balls.
Partitioning ordered hypergraphs
An {\em ordered $r$-graph} is an $r$-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set is linearly ordered. Given $2\leq k\leq r$, an ordered $r$-graph $H$ is {\em interval} $k$-{\em partite} if there exist at least $k$ disjoint intervals in the ordering such that every edge of $H$ has nonempty intersection with each of the intervals and is contained in their union.
Our main result implies that for each $α> k - 1$ and $d>0$, every $n$-vertex ordered $r$-graph with $d \,n^α$ edges has for some $m\leq n$ an $m$-vertex interval $k$-partite subgraph with $Ω(d\, m^α)$ edges. This is an extension to ordered $r$-graphs of the observation by Erd\H os and Kleitman that every $r$-graph contains an $r$-partite subgraph with a constant proportion of the edges. The restriction $α> k-1$ is sharp. We also present applications of the main result to several extremal problems for ordered hypergraphs.
A partial order and cluster-similarity metric on rooted phylogenetic trees
Metrics on rooted phylogenetic trees are integral to a number of areas of phylogenetic analysis. Cluster-similarity metrics have recently been introduced in order to limit skew in the distribution of distances, and to ensure that trees in the neighbourhood of each other have similar hierarchies. In the present paper we introduce a new cluster-similarity metric on rooted phylogenetic tree space that has an associated local operation, allowing for easy calculation of neighbourhoods, a trait that is desirable for MCMC calculations. The metric is defined by the distance on the Hasse diagram induced by a partial order on the set of rooted phylogenetic trees, itself based on the notion of a hierarchy-preserving map between trees. The partial order we introduce is a refinement of the well-known refinement order on hierarchies. Both the partial order and the hierarchy-preserving maps may also be of independent interest.
On Berge-Ramsey problems
Given a graph $G$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a Berge copy of $F$ if $V(G)\subset V(\mathcal{H})$ and there is a bijection $f:E(G)\rightarrow E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for any edge $e$ of $G$ we have $e\subset f(e)$. We study Ramsey problems for Berge copies of graphs, i.e. the smallest number of vertices of a complete $r$-uniform hypergraph, such that if we color the hyperedges with $c$ colors, there is a monochromatic Berge copy of $G$.
We obtain a couple results regarding these problems. In particular, we determine for which $r$ and $c$ the Ramsey number can be super-linear. We also show a new way to obtain lower bounds, and improve the general lower bounds by a large margin. In the specific case $G=K_n$ and $r=2c-1$, we obtain an upper bound that is sharp besides a constant term, improving earlier results.
On the distribution of runners on a circle
Consider $n$ runners running on a circular track of unit length with constant speeds such that $k$ of the speeds are distinct. We show that, at some time, there will exist a sector $S$ which contains at least $|S|n+ Ω(\sqrt{k})$ runners. The result can be generalized as follows. Let $f(x,y)$ be a complex bivariate polynomial whose Newton polytope has $k$ vertices. Then there exists $a\in {\mathbb C}\setminus\{0\}$ and a complex sector $S=\{re^{\imath θ}: r>0, α\leq θ\leq β\}$ such that the univariate polynomial $f(x,a)$ contains at least $\frac{β-α}{2π}n+Ω(\sqrt{k})$ non-zero roots in $S$ (where $n$ is the total number of such roots and $0\leq (β-α)\leq 2π$). This shows that the Real $τ$-Conjecture of Koiran implies the conjecture on Newton polytopes of Koiran et al.
Ihara Zeta Entropy
In this article, we introduce an entropy based on the formal power series expansion of the Ihara Zeta function. We find a number of inequalities based on the values of the Ihara zeta function. These new entropies are applicable in symbolic dynamics and the dynamics of billiards.

We construct a family of infinite-dimensional positive sub-coalgebras within the Grothendieck ring of Hecke algebras, when viewed as a Hopf algebra with respect to the induction and restriction functor. These sub-coalgebras have as structure constants the 3-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannians and are spanned by what we call cylindric Hecke characters, a particular set of virtual characters for whose computation we give several explicit combinatorial formulae. One of these expressions is a generalisation of Ram's formula for irreducible Hecke characters and uses cylindric broken rim hook tableaux. We show that the latter are in bijection with so-called `ice configurations' on a cylindrical square lattice, which define the asymmetric six-vertex model in statistical mechanics. A key ingredient of our construction is an extension of the boson-fermion correspondence to Hecke algebras and employing the latter we find new expressions for Jing's vertex operators of Hall-Littlewood functions in terms of the six-vertex transfer matrices on the infinite planar lattice.
Nearly $k$-distance sets
We say that a set of points $S\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is an $\varepsilon$-nearly $k$-distance set if there exist $1\le t_1\le \ldots\le t_k,$ such that the distance between any two distinct points in $S$ falls into $[t_1,t_1+\varepsilon]\cup\ldots\cup[t_k,t_k+\varepsilon]$. In this paper, we study the quantity $M_k(d) = \lim_{\varepsilon\to 0}\max\{|S|\ :\ S\text{ is an }\varepsilon\text{-nearly } k \text{-distance set in } \mathbb{R}^d\}$ and its relation to the classical quantity $m_k(d)$: the size of the largest $k$-distance set in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We obtain that $M_k(d) = m_k(d)$ for $k=2,3$, as well as for any fixed $k$, provided that $d$ is sufficiently large. The last result answers a question, proposed by Erdős, Makai and Pach.
We also address a closely related Turán-type problem, studied by Erdős, Makai, Pach, and Spencer in the 80's: given $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, how many pairs of them form a distance that belongs to $[t_1,t_1+1]\cup\ldots\cup[t_k,t_k+1],$ where $t_1,\ldots, t_k$ are fixed and any two points in the set are at distance at least $1$ apart? We establish the connection between this quantity and a quantity closely related to $M_k(d-1)$, as well as obtain an exact answer for the same ranges $k,d$ as above.
Circular automata synchronize with high probability
In this paper we prove that a uniformly distributed random circular automaton $\mathcal{A}_n$ of order $n$ synchronizes with high probability (whp). More precisely, we prove that $$ \mathbb{P}\left[\mathcal{A}_n \text{ synchronizes}\right] = 1- O\left(\frac{1}{n}\right). $$ The main idea of the proof is to translate the synchronization problem into properties of a random matrix; these properties are then handled with tools of the probabilistic method. Additionally, we provide an upper bound for the probability of synchronization of circular automata in terms of chromatic polynomials of circulant graphs.

The minimum distance of all binary linear codes with dimension at most eight is known. The smallest open case for dimension nine is length $n=46$ with known bounds $19\le d\le 20$. Here we present a $[46,9,20]_2$ code and show its uniqueness. Interestingly enough, this unique optimal code is asymmetric, i.e., it has a trivial automorphism group. Additionally, we show the non-existence of $[47,10,20]_2$ and $[85,9,40]_2$ codes.

We introduce the family of Theta operators $Θ_f$ indexed by symmetric functions $f$ that allow us to conjecture a compositional refinement of the Delta conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and Wilson for $Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$. We show that the $4$-variable Catalan theorem of Zabrocki is precisely the Schröder case of our compositional Delta conjecture, and we show how to relate this conjecture to the Dyck path algebra introduced by Carlsson and Mellit, extending one of their results. Again using the Theta operators, we conjecture a touching refinement of the generalized Delta conjecture for $Δ_{h_m}Δ_{e_{n-k-1}}'e_n$, and prove the case $k=0$, extending the shuffle theorem of Carlsson and Mellit to a generalized shuffle theorem for $Δ_{h_m}\nabla e_n$. Moreover we show how this implies the case $k=0$ of our generalized Delta square conjecture for $\frac{[n-k]_t}{[n]_t}Δ_{h_m}Δ_{e_{n-k}}ω(p_n)$, extending the square theorem of Sergel to a generalized square theorem for $Δ_{h_m}\nabla ω(p_n)$. Still the Theta operators will provide a conjectural formula for the Frobenius characteristic of super-diagonal coinvariants with two sets of Grassmanian variables, extending the one of Zabrocki for the case with one set of such variables. We propose a combinatorial interpretation of this last formula at $q=1$, leaving open the problem of finding a dinv statistic that gives the whole symmetric function.
