Spectral Gap of Random Hyperbolic Graphs and Related Parameters

Random hyperbolic graphs have been suggested as a promising model of social networks. A few of their fundamental parameters have been studied. However, none of them concerns their spectra. We consider the random hyperbolic graph model as formalized by [GPP12] and essentially determine the spectral gap of their normalized Laplacian. Specifically, we establish that with high probability the second smallest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian of the giant component of and $n$-vertex random hyperbolic graph is $Ω(n^{-(2α-1)}/D)$, where $\frac12<α<1$ is a model parameter and $D$ is the network diameter (which is known to be at most polylogarithmic in $n$). We also show a matching (up to a polylogarithmic factor) upper bound of $n^{-(2α-1)}(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$. As a byproduct we conclude that the conductance upper bound on the eigenvalue gap obtained via Cheeger's inequality is essentially tight. We also provide a more detailed picture of the collection of vertices on which the bound on the conductance is attained, in particular showing that for all subsets whose volume is $O(n^{1-\varepsilon})$ the obtained conductance is with high probability $Ω(n^{-(2α-1)\varepsilon+o(1)})$. Finally, we also show consequences of our result for the minimum and maximum bisection of the giant component.

We study the behavior of theta characteristics on an algebraic curve under the specialization map to a tropical curve. We show that each effective theta characteristic on the tropical curve is the specialization of $2^{g-1}$ even theta characteristics and $2^{g-1}$ odd theta characteristics. We then study the relationship between unramified double covers of a tropical curve and its theta characteristics, and use this to define the tropical Prym variety.
Note on the index conjecture in zero-sum theory and its connection to a Dedekind-type sum

Let $S=(a_1)\cdots(a_k)$ be a minimal zero-sum sequence over a finite cyclic group $G$. The index conjecture states that if $k=4$ and $\gcd(|G|,6)=1$, then $S$ has index 1. In this note we study the index conjecture and connect it to a Dedekind-type sum. In particular we reprove a special case of the conjecture when $|G|$ is prime.
Polyhedra with few 3-cuts are hamiltonian

In 1956, Tutte showed that every planar 4-connected graph is hamiltonian. In this article, we will generalize this result and prove that polyhedra with at most three 3-cuts are hamiltonian. In 2002 Jackson and Yu have shown this result for the subclass of triangulations. We also prove that polyhedra with at most four 3-cuts have a hamiltonian path. It is well known that for each $k \ge 6$ non-hamiltonian polyhedra with $k$ 3-cuts exist. We give computational results on lower bounds on the order of a possible non-hamiltonian polyhedron for the remaining open cases of polyhedra with four or five 3-cuts.
Odd length for even hyperoctahedral groups and signed generating functions

We define a new statistic on the even hyperoctahedral groups which is a natural analogue of the odd length statistic recently defined and studied on Coxeter groups of types $A$ and $B$. We compute the signed (by length) generating function of this statistic over the whole group and over its maximal and some other quotients and show that it always factors nicely. We also present some conjectures.
Hopeful windows and fractals in cellular automata and combinatorial games
This paper studies 2-player impartial combinatorial games, where the outcomes correspond to updates of cellular automata (CA) which generalize Wolfram's elementary rule 60 and rule 110 (Cook 2004). The games extend the class of \emph{triangle placing games} (Larsson 2013) where at each stage of the game the previous player has the option to block certain hopeful moves of the next player. We also study fractals and partial convergence in a subclass of the CA.

In this paper we describe the thickened strips and the outside nested decompositions of any skew shape $λ/μ$. For any such decomposition $Φ=(Θ_1,Θ_2,\ldots,Θ_g)$ of the skew shape $λ/μ$ where $Θ_i$ is a thickened strip for every $i$, if $r$ is the number of boxes that are contained in any two distinct thickened strips of $Φ$, we establish a determinantal formula of the function $s_{λ/μ}(X)p_{1^r}(X)$ with the Schur functions of thickened strips as entries, where $s_{λ/μ}(X)$ is the Schur function of the skew shape $λ/μ$ and $p_{1^r}(X)$ is the power sum symmetric function index by the partition $(1^r)$. This generalizes Hamel and Goulden's theorem on the outside decompositions of the skew shape $λ/μ$. As an application of our theorem, we derive the number of $m$-strip tableaux which was first counted by Baryshnikov and Romik via extending the transfer operator approach due to Elkies.
Topological realizations of line arrangements

A venerable problem in combinatorics and geometry asks whether a given incidence relation may be realized by a configuration of points and lines. The classic version of this would ask for algebraic lines over some field or possibly real pseudolines: embedded circles (isotopic to $RP^1$) in the real projective plane. In this paper we investigate whether a configuration is realized by a collection of $2$-spheres embedded, in the symplectic, smooth, or topological (locally flat) categories, in the complex projective plane. We find obstructions to realizability in the topological category, which apply to configurations specified by all projective planes over a finite field. Such obstructions are used to show that certain contact graph manifolds are not (strongly) symplectically fillable. We also show that a configuration of real pseudolines can be complexified to give a configuration of smooth, indeed symplectically embedded, $2$-spheres.
Lonely Runner Polyhedra

We study the \emph{Lonely Runner Conjecture}, conceived by Jörg M.~Wills in the 1960's: Given positive integers $n_1, n_2, \dots, n_k$, there exists a positive real number $t$ such that for all $1 \le j \le k$ the distance of $t \, n_j$ to the nearest integer is at least $\frac{ 1 }{ k+1 }$. Continuing a view-obstruction approach by Cusick and recent work by Henze and Malikiosis, our goal is to promote a polyhedral \emph{ansatz} to the Lonely Runner Conjecture. Our results include geometric proofs of some folklore results that are only implicit in the existing literature, a new family of affirmative instances defined by the parities of the speeds, and geometrically motivated conjectures whose resolution would shed further light on the Lonely Runner Conjecture.

Using a connection to lozenge tilings of triangular regions, we establish an easily checkable criterion that guarantees the weak Lefschetz property of a quotient by a monomial ideal. It is also shown that each such ideal also has a semistable syzygy bundle.
Generalized Permutohedra from Probabilistic Graphical Models

A graphical model encodes conditional independence relations via the Markov properties. For an undirected graph these conditional independence relations can be represented by a simple polytope known as the graph associahedron, which can be constructed as a Minkowski sum of standard simplices. There is an analogous polytope for conditional independence relations coming from a regular Gaussian model, and it can be defined using multiinformation or relative entropy. For directed acyclic graphical models and also for mixed graphical models containing undirected, directed and bidirected edges, we give a construction of this polytope, up to equivalence of normal fans, as a Minkowski sum of matroid polytopes. Finally, we apply this geometric insight to construct a new ordering-based search algorithm for causal inference via directed acyclic graphical models.
Walking on the Edge and Cosystolic Expansion
Random walks on regular bounded degree expander graphs have numerous applications. A key property of these walks is that they converge rapidly to the uniform distribution on the vertices. The recent study of expansion of high dimensional simplicial complexes, which are the high dimensional analogues of graphs, calls for the natural generalization of random walks to higher dimensions. In particular, a high order random walk on a $2$-dimensional simplicial complex moves at random between neighboring edges of the complex, where two edges are considered neighbors if they share a common triangle. We show that if a regular $2$-dimensional simplicial complex is a cosystolic expander and the underlying graph of the complex has a spectral gap larger than $1/2$, then the random walk on the edges of the complex converges rapidly to the uniform distribution on the edges.
Three conjectures in extremal spectral graph theory

We prove three conjectures regarding the maximization of spectral invariants over certain families of graphs. Our most difficult result is that the join of $P_2$ and $P_{n-2}$ is the unique graph of maximum spectral radius over all planar graphs. This was conjectured by Boots and Royle in 1991 and independently by Cao and Vince in 1993. Similarly, we prove a conjecture of Cvetković and Rowlinson from 1990 stating that the unique outerplanar graph of maximum spectral radius is the join of a vertex and $P_{n-1}$. Finally, we prove a conjecture of Aouchiche et al from 2008 stating that a pineapple graph is the unique connected graph maximizing the spectral radius minus the average degree. To prove our theorems, we use the leading eigenvector of a purported extremal graph to deduce structural properties about that graph. Using this setup, we give short proofs of several old results: Mantel's Theorem, Stanley's edge bound and extensions, the Kővari-Sós-Turán Theorem applied to $\mathrm{ex}\left(n, K_{2,t}\right)$, and a partial solution to an old problem of Erdős on making a triangle-free graph bipartite.
Linear versus set valued Kronecker representations
A set valued representation of the Kronecker quiver is nothing but a quiver. We apply the forgetful functor from vector spaces to sets and compare linear with set valued representations of the Kronecker quiver.

For every $n\in\mathbb N$ we construct a finite graph $G$ such that every orientation $\vec G$ of $G$ contains an isometric copy of any oriented tree on $n$ vertices, and evaluate the smallest possible cardinality of $G$. On the other hand, we prove that every graph $G$ admits an orientation containing no directed $ω$-paths of infinite diameter.
Absolute Combinatorial Game Theory

We propose a unifying additive theory for standard conventions in Combinatorial Game Theory, including normal-, misère- and scoring-play, studied by Berlekamp, Conway, Dorbec, Ettinger, Guy, Larsson, Milley, Neto, Nowakowski, Renault, Santos, Siegel, Sopena, Stewart (1976-2019), and others. A game {\em universe} is a set of games that satisfies some standard closure properties. Here, we reveal when the fundamental game comparison problem, ``Is $G\su H$?'', simplifies to a constructive `local' solution, which generalizes Conway's foundational result in ONAG (1976) for normal-play games. This happens in a broad and general fashion whenever a given game universe is {\em absolute}. Games in an absolute universe satisfy two properties, dubbed {\em parentality} and {\em saturation}, and we prove that the latter is implied by the former. Parentality means that any pair of non-empty finite sets of games is admissible as options, and saturation means that, given any game, the first player can be favored in a disjunctive sum. Game comparison is at the core of combinatorial game theory, and for example efficiency of potential reduction theorems rely on a local comparison. We distinguish between three levels of game comparison; superordinate (global), basic (semi-constructive) and subordinate (local) comparison. In proofs, a sometimes tedious challenge faces a researcher in CGT: in order to disprove an inequality, an explicit distinguishing game might be required. Here, we explain how this job becomes obsolete whenever a universe is absolute. Namely, it suffices to see if a pair of games satisfies a certain Proviso together with a Maintenance of an inequality.

Using the theory of PBW bases, one can realize the crystal $B(\infty)$ for any semisimple Lie algebra over $\mathbf{C}$ using Kostant partitions as the underlying set. In fact there are many such realizations, one for each reduced expression for the longest element of the Weyl group. There is an algorithm to calculate the actions of the crystal operators, but it can be quite complicated. Here we show that, for certain reduced expressions, the crystal operators can also be described by a much simpler bracketing rule. We give conditions describing these reduced expressions, and show that there is at least one example in every type except possibly $E_8$, $F_4$ and $G_2$. We then discuss some examples.
Filters in the partition lattice

Given a filter $Δ$ in the poset of compositions of $n$, we form the filter $Π^{*}_Δ$ in the partition lattice. We determine all the reduced homology groups of the order complex of $Π^{*}_Δ$ as ${\mathfrak S}_{n-1}$-modules in terms of the reduced homology groups of the simplicial complex $Δ$ and in terms of Specht modules of border shapes. We also obtain the homotopy type of this order complex. These results generalize work of Calderbank--Hanlon--Robinson and Wachs on the $d$-divisible partition lattice. Our main theorem applies to a plethora of examples, including filters associated to integer knapsack partitions and filters generated by all partitions having block sizes $a$ or~$b$. We also obtain the reduced homology groups of the filter generated by all partitions having block sizes belonging to the arithmetic progression $a, a + d, \ldots, a + (a-1) \cdot d$, extending work of Browdy.

We study the Bakry-Émery curvature function $\mathcal{K}_{G,x}:(0,\infty]\to \mathbb{R}$ of a vertex $x$ in a locally finite graph $G$ systematically. Here $\mathcal{K}_{G,x}(\mathcal{N})$ is defined as the optimal curvature lower bound $\mathcal{K}$ in the Bakry-Émery curvature-dimension inequality $CD(\mathcal{K},\mathcal{N})$ that $x$ satisfies. We prove the curvature functions of the Cartesian product of two graphs $G_1,G_2$ equal an abstract product of curvature functions of $G_1,G_2$. We relate the curvature functions of $G$ with various spectral properties of (weighted) graphs constructed from local structures of $G$. We explore the curvature functions of Cayley graphs, strongly regular graphs, and many particular (families of) examples including Johnson graphs and complete bipartite graphs. We construct an infinite family of $6$-regular graphs which satisfy $CD(0,\infty)$ but are not Cayley graphs.
