Symmetry in maximal $(s-1,s+1)$ cores
We explain a "curious symmetry" for maximal $(s-1,s+1)$-core partitions first observed by T. Amdeberhan and E. Leven. Specifically, using the $s$-abacus, we show such partitions have empty $s$-core and that their $s$-quotient is comprised of 2-cores. This imposes strong conditions on the partition structure, and implies both the Amdeberhan-Leven result and additional symmetry. We also find a more general family that exhibits these symmetries.
A four-person chess-like game without Nash equilibria in pure stationary strategies
In this short note we give an example of a four-person finite positional game with perfect information that has no positions of chance and no Nash equilibria in pure stationary strategies. The corresponding directed graph has only one directed cycle and only five terminal positions.
It remains open: (i) if the number $n$ of the players can be reduced from $4$ to $3$, (ii) if the number $p$ of the terminals can be reduced from $5$ to $4$, and most important, (iii) whether it is possible to get a similar example in which the outcome $c$ corresponding to all (possibly, more than one) directed cycles is worse than every terminal for each player.
Yet, it is known that (j) $n$ cannot be reduced to $2$, (jj) $p$ cannot be reduced to $3$, and (jjj) there can be no similar example in which each player makes a decision in a unique position.
Keywords: stochastic, positional, chess-like, transition-free games with perfect information and without moves of chance; Nash equilibrium, directed cycles (dicycles), terminal position.
On-line coloring between two lines
We study on-line colorings of certain graphs given as intersection graphs of objects "between two lines", i.e., there is a pair of horizontal lines such that each object of the representation is a connected set contained in the strip between the lines and touches both. Some of the graph classes admitting such a representation are permutation graphs (segments), interval graphs (axis-aligned rectangles), trapezoid graphs (trapezoids) and cocomparability graphs (simple curves). We present an on-line algorithm coloring graphs given by convex sets between two lines that uses $O(ω^3)$ colors on graphs with maximum clique size $ω$.
In contrast intersection graphs of segments attached to a single line may force any on-line coloring algorithm to use an arbitrary number of colors even when $ω=2$.
The {\em left-of} relation makes the complement of intersection graphs of objects between two lines into a poset. As an aside we discuss the relation of the class $\mathcal{C}$ of posets obtained from convex sets between two lines with some other classes of posets: all $2$-dimensional posets and all posets of height $2$ are in $\mathcal{C}$ but there is a $3$-dimensional poset of height $3$ that does not belong to $\mathcal{C}$.
We also show that the on-line coloring problem for curves between two lines is as hard as the on-line chain partition problem for arbitrary posets.

We introduce a method of decomposing the family of intervals along a cyclic permutation into chains to determine the size of the largest family of subsets of $[n]:= \{1,2,...,n\}$ not containing one or more given posets as a subposet. De Bonis, Katona and Swanepoel determined the size of the largest butterfly-free family. We strengthen this result by showing that, for certain posets containing the butterfly poset as a subposet, the same bound holds. We also obtain the corresponding LYM-type inequalities.

We study the number of lines in hypergraphs in a more symmetric setting, where both the hypergraph and its complement are considered. In the general case and in some special cases, the lower bounds on the number of lines are much higher than their counterparts in single hypergraph setting or admit more elegant proofs. We show that the minimum value of product of the number of lines in both hypergraphs on $n$ points is easily determined as $\binom{n}{2}$; and the minimum value of their sum is between $Ω(n)$ and $O(n \log n)$. We also study some restricted classes of hypergraphs; and determine the tight bounds on the minimum sum when the hypergraph is derived from an Euclidean space, a real projective plane, or a tree.
A structure theorem for strong immersions
A graph H is strongly immersed in G if H is obtained from G by a sequence of vertex splittings (i.e., lifting some pairs of incident edges and removing the vertex) and edge removals. Equivalently, vertices of H are mapped to distinct vertices of G (branch vertices) and edges of H are mapped to pairwise edge-disjoint paths in G, each of them joining the branch vertices corresponding to the ends of the edge and not containing any other branch vertices. We describe the structure of graphs avoiding a fixed graph as a strong immersion.

To any graph $G$ one can associate a toric variety $X(\mathcal{P}G)$, obtained as a blowup of projective space along coordinate subspaces corresponding to connected subgraphs of $G$. The polytope of this toric variety is the graph associahedron of $G$, a class of polytopes that includes the permutohedron, associahedron, and stellahedron. We show that the space $X(\mathcal{P}{G})$ is isomorphic to a Hassett compactification of $M_{0,n}$ precisely when $G$ is an iterated cone over a discrete set. This may be viewed as a generalization of the well-known fact that the Losev--Manin moduli space is isomorphic to the toric variety associated to the permutohedron.
Sparse matrices describing iterations of integer-valued functions
We consider iterations of integer-valued functions $φ$, which have no fixed points in the domain of positive integers. We define a local function $φ_n$, which is a sub-function of $φ$ being restricted to the subdomain $\{0, ..., n \}$. The iterations of $φ_n$ can be described by a certain $n \times n$ sparse matrix $M_n$ and its powers. The determinant of the related $n \times n$ matrix $\hat{M}_n = I - M_n$, where $I$ is the identity matrix, acts as an indicator, whether the iterations of the local function $φ_n$ enter a cycle or not. If $φ_n$ has no cycle, then $\det \hat{M}_n = 1$ and the structure of the inverse $\hat{M}_n^{-1}$ can be characterized. Subsequently, we give applications to compute the inverse $\hat{M}_n^{-1}$ for some special functions. At the end, we discuss the results in connection with the $3x+1$ and related problems.

Let $k\geq3$ be a fixed integer and let $Z_k(G)$ be the number of $k$-colourings of the graph $G$. For certain values of the average degree, the random variable $Z_k(G(n,m))$ is known to be concentrated in the sense that $\frac1n(\ln Z_k(G(n,m))-\ln E[Z_k(G(n,m))])$ converges to $0$ in probability [Achlioptas and Coja-Oghlan: FOCS 2008]. In the present paper we prove a significantly stronger concentration result. Namely, we show that for a wide range of average degrees, $\frac1ω(\ln Z_k(G(n,m))-\ln E[Z_k(G(n,m))])$ converges to $0$ in probability for any diverging function $ω=ω(n)\to\infty$. For $k$ exceeding a certain constant $k_0$ this result covers all average degrees up to the so-called condensation phase transition, and this is best possible. As an application, we show that the experiment of choosing a $k$-colouring of the random graph $G(n,m)$ uniformly at random is contiguous with respect to the so-called "planted model".
Combinatoire du polynôme de Tutte et des cartes planaires
This thesis deals with the Tutte polynomial, studied from different points of view. In the first part, we address the enumeration of planar maps equipped with a spanning forest, here called forested maps, with a weight $z$ per face and a weight $u$ per non-root component of the forest. Equivalently, we count (with respect to the number of faces) the planar maps $C$ weighted by $T_C(u+1,1)$, where $T_C$ is the Tutte polynomial of $C$. We begin by a purely combinatorial characterization of the corresponding generating function, denoted by $F(z,u)$. We deduce from this that $F(z,u)$ is differentially algebraic in $z$, that is, satisfies a polynomial differential equation in $z$. Finally, for $u \geq -1$, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the $n$th coefficient of $F (z,u)$. We observe a phase transition at $0$, with a very unusual regime in $n^{-3}\ln^{-2} (n)$ for $u \in [-1,0[$, which testifies a new universality class for planar maps. In the second part, we propose a framework unifying the notions of activity used in the literature to describe the Tutte polynomial. The new notion of activity thereby defined is called $Δ$-activity. It gathers all the notions of activities that were already known and has nice properties, as Crapo's property that defines a partition of the lattice of the spanning subgraphs into intervals with respect to the activity. Lastly we conjecture that every activity that describes the Tutte polynomial and that satisfies Crapo's property can be defined in terms of $Δ$-activity.
Schubert slices in the combinatorial geometry of flag domains
Flag domains are open orbits of real semisimple Lie groups in flag manifolds of their complexifications. Certain group theoretically defined compact complex submanifolds, which are regarded as cycles, are of basic importance for their complex geometric and representation theoretic properties. It is known that there are optimal Schubert varieties which intersect the cycles transversally in finitely many points and in particular determine them in homology. Here we give a precise description of these Schubert varieties in terms of certain subsets of the Weyl group and compute their total number for all the real forms of SL(n,C). Furthermore, we give an explicit description of the points of intersection in terms of flags and their number.
Monotonicity properties of certain Laplacian eigenvectors associated with trees
Nath and Paul (Linear Algebra Appl.,460(2014),97-110) have shown that the largest distance Laplacian eigenvalue of a path is simple and the corresponding eigenvector has properties similar to the Fiedler vector. We given an alternative proof, establishing a more general result in the process. It is conjectured that a similar phenomenon holds for any tree.

The general goal of this paper is to identify a transformation group that can be used to describe a class of feedback interconnections involving subsystems which are modeled solely in terms of Chen-Fliess functional expansions or Fliess operators and are independent of the existence of any state space models. This interconnection, called an output affine feedback connection, is distinguished from conventional output feedback by the presence of a multiplier in an outer loop. Once this transformation group is established, three basic questions are addressed. How can this transformation group be used to provide an explicit Fliess operator representation of such a closed-loop system? Is it possible to use this feedback scheme to do system inversion purely in an input-output setting? In particular, can feedback input-output linearization be posed and solved entirely in this framework, i.e., without the need for any state space realization? Lastly, what can be said about feedback invariants under this transformation group? A final objective of the paper is to describe the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters associated with the group in terms of a pre-Lie product.

We prove that the (non-symmetric) adjacency matrix of a uniform random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices is asymptotically almost surely invertible, assuming $\min(d,n-d)\ge C\log^2n$ for a sufficiently large constant $C>0$. The proof makes use of a coupling of random regular digraphs formed by "shuffling" the neighborhood of a pair of vertices, as well as concentration results for the distribution of edges recently obtained by the author (arXiv:1410.5595). We also apply our general approach to prove a.a.s.\ invertibility of Hadamard products $Σ\circ Ξ$, where $Ξ$ is a matrix of iid uniform $\pm1$ signs, and $Σ$ is a 0/1 matrix whose associated digraph satisfies certain "expansion" properties.

In this paper, we are interested in minimizing the sum of block sizes in a pairwise balanced design, where there are some constraints on the size of one block or the size of the largest block. For every positive integers n;m, where m ? n, let S(n;m) be the smallest integer s for which there exists a PBD on n points whose largest block has size m and the sum of its block sizes is equal to s. Also, let S0(n;m) be the smallest integers for which there exists a PBD on n points which has a block of size m and the sum of it block sizes is equal to s. We prove some lower bounds for S(n;m) and S0(n;m). Moreover, we apply these bounds to determine the asymptotic behaviour of the sigma clique partition number of the graph Kn-Km, Cocktail party graphs and complement of paths and cycles.
A property of trivalent graphs related to equidissections
Monsky proved that a square cannot be dissected into an odd number of triangles of equal area. Stein conjectured that the same holds for any polygon whose edges can be paired into parallel and equal-length segments. We prove Stein's conjecture under an assumption that all triangle vertices have rational coordinates. Our result is derived from a more general property of trivalent graphs equipped with a $\mathbb{Q}^2$-valued flow.
Interval cyclic edge-colorings of graphs

A proper edge-coloring of a graph $G$ with colors $1,\ldots,t$ is called an \emph{interval cyclic $t$-coloring} if all colors are used, and the edges incident to each vertex $v\in V(G)$ are colored by $d_{G}(v)$ consecutive colors modulo $t$, where $d_{G}(v)$ is the degree of a vertex $v$ in $G$. A graph $G$ is \emph{interval cyclically colorable} if it has an interval cyclic $t$-coloring for some positive integer $t$. The set of all interval cyclically colorable graphs is denoted by $\mathfrak{N}_{c}$. For a graph $G\in \mathfrak{N}_{c}$, the least and the greatest values of $t$ for which it has an interval cyclic $t$-coloring are denoted by $w_{c}(G)$ and $W_{c}(G)$, respectively. In this paper we investigate some properties of interval cyclic colorings. In particular, we prove that if $G$ is a triangle-free graph with at least two vertices and $G\in \mathfrak{N}_{c}$, then $W_{c}(G)\leq \vert V(G)\vert +Δ(G)-2$. We also obtain bounds on $w_{c}(G)$ and $W_{c}(G)$ for various classes of graphs. Finally, we give some methods for constructing of interval cyclically non-colorable graphs.
The $2nd-$convex hull of every optimal rectilinear drawing of $K_{n}$ is a triangle
A rectilinear drawing of a graph $G$ is optimal if it has the smallest number of crossings among all rectilinear drawings of $G$. In this paper it is shown that for $n\geq 8$, the second convex hull of every optimal rectilinear drawing of the complete graph $K_n$ is a triangle.

A complex Hadamard matrix is a square matrix H with complex entries of absolute value 1 satisfying $HH^*= nI$, where $*$ stands for the Hermitian transpose and I is the identity matrix of order $n$. In this paper, we first determine the image of a certain rational map from the $d$-dimensional complex projective space to $\mathbb{C}^{d(d+1)/2}$. Applying this result with $d=3$, we give constructions of complex Hadamard matrices, and more generally, type-II matrices, in the Bose-Mesner algebra of a certain 3-class symmetric association scheme. In particular, we recover the complex Hadamard matrices of order 15 found by Ada Chan. We compute the Haagerup sets to show inequivalence of resulting type-II matrices, and determine the Nomura algebras to show that the resulting matrices are not decomposable into generalized tensor products.

In this note we develop and clarify some of the basic combinatorial properties of the new notion of $n$-dependence (for $1\leq n < ω$) recently introduced by Shelah. In the same way as dependence of a theory means its inability to encode a bipartite random graph with a definable edge relation, $n$-dependence corresponds to the inability to encode a random $(n+1)$-partite $(n+1)$-hypergraph with a definable edge relation. Most importantly, we characterize $n$-dependence by counting $\varphi$-types over finite sets (generalizing Sauer-Shelah lemma and answering a question of Shelah) and in terms of the collapse of random ordered $(n+1)$-hypergraph indiscernibles down to order-indiscernibles (which implies that the failure of $n$-dependence is always witnessed by a formula in a single free variable).
