Threefold triple systems with nonsingular $N_2$
There are various results connecting ranks of incidence matrices of graphs and hypergraphs with their combinatorial structure. Here, we consider the generalized incidence matrix $N_2$ (defined by inclusion of pairs in edges) for one natural class of hypergraphs: the triple systems with index three. Such systems with nonsingular $N_2$ (over the rationals) appear to be quite rare, yet they can be constructed with PBD closure. In fact, a range of ranks near $\binom{v}{2}$ is obtained for large orders $v$.

An important combinatorial result in equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory Schubert calculus is represented by the formulas of Billey and Graham-Willems for the localization of Schubert classes at torus fixed points. These formulas work uniformly in all Lie types, and are based on the concept of a root polynomial. In this paper we define formal root polynomials associated with an arbitrary formal group law (and thus a generalized cohomology theory). We focus on the case of the hyperbolic formal group law (corresponding to elliptic cohomology). We study some of the properties of formal root polynomials. We give applications to the efficient computation of the transition matrix between two natural bases of the formal Demazure algebra in the hyperbolic case. As a corollary, we rederive in a transparent and uniform manner the formulas of Billey and Graham-Willems. We also prove the corresponding formula in connective $K$-theory, which seems new, and a duality result in this case. Other applications, including some related to the computation of Bott-Samelson classes in elliptic cohomology, are also discussed.

This paper surveys eight classes of polynomials associated with $A$-type and $BC$-type root systems: Jack, Jacobi, Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials and interpolation (or shifted) Jack and Macdonald polynomials and their $BC$-type extensions. Among these the $BC$-type interpolation Jack polynomials were probably unobserved until now. Much emphasis is put on combinatorial formulas and binomial formulas for (most of) these polynomials. Possibly new results derived from these formulas are a limit from Koornwinder to Macdonald polynomials, an explicit formula for Koornwinder polynomials in two variables, and a combinatorial expression for the coefficients of the expansion of $BC$-type Jacobi polynomials in terms of Jack polynomials which is different from Macdonald's combinatorial expression. For these last coefficients in the two-variable case the explicit expression in Koornwinder & Sprinkhuizen (1978) is now obtained in a quite different way.

We construct a lift of Schur's Q-functions to the peak algebra of the symmetric group, called the noncommutative Schur Q-functions, and extract from them a new natural basis with several nice properties such as the positive right-Pieri rule, combinatorial expansion, etc. Dually, we get a basis of the Stembridge algebra of peak functions refining Schur's P-functions in a simple way.
Equitable Coloring of Graphs with Intermediate Maximum Degree
If the vertices of a graph $G$ are colored with $k$ colors such that no adjacent vertices receive the same color and the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one, then $G$ is said to be equitably $k$-colorable. Let $|G|$ denote the number of vertices of $G$ and $Δ=Δ(G)$ the maximum degree of a vertex in $G$. We prove that a graph $G$ of order at least 6 is equitably $Δ$-colorable if $G$ satisfies $(|G|+1)/3 \leq Δ< |G|/2$ and none of its components is a $K_{Δ+1}$.

We construct supplementary difference sets (SDS) with parameters $(59;28,22;21)$, $(69;31,27;24)$, $(75;36,29;28)$, $(77;34,31;27)$ and $(87;38,36;31)$. These SDSs give D-optimal designs (DO-designs) of two-circulant type of orders 118,138,150,154 and 174. Until now, no DO-designs of orders 138,154 and 174 were known. While a DO-design (not of two-circulant type) of order 150 was constructed previously by Holzmann and Kharaghani, no such design of two-circulant type was known. The smallest undecided order for DO-designs is now 198. We use a novel property of the compression map to speed up some computations.
Combinatorics of hexagonal fully packed loop configurations

In this article, fully packed loop configurations of hexagonal shape (HFPLs) are defined. They generalize triangular fully packed loop configurations. To encode the boundary conditions of an HFPL, a sextuple $(\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{T},\mathsf{t},\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{T};\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{B},\mathsf{b},\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{B})$ of $01$-words is assigned to it. In the first main result of this article, necessary conditions for the boundary $(\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{T},\mathsf{t},\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{T};\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{B},\mathsf{b},\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{B})$ of an HFPL are stated. For instance, the inequality $d(\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{B})+d(\mathsf{b})+d(\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{B})\geq d(\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{T})+d(\mathsf{t})+d(\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{T})+\vert\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{T}\vert_1\vert\mathsf{t}\vert_0+\vert\mathsf{t}\vert_1 \vert\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{T}\vert_0+\vert\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{B}\vert_0\vert\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{B}\vert_1$ has to be fulfilled, where $\vert\cdot\vert_i$ denotes the number of occurrences of $i$ for $i=0,1$ and $d(\cdot)$ denotes the number of inversions. The other main contribution of this article is the enumeration of HFPLs with boundary $(\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{T},\mathsf{t},\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{T};\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{B},\mathsf{b},\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{B})$ such that $d(\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{B})+d(\mathsf{b})+d(\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{B})-d(\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{T})-d(\mathsf{t})-d(\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{T})-\vert\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{T}\vert_1\vert\mathsf{t}\vert_0- \vert\mathsf{t}\vert_1\vert\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{T}\vert_0-\vert\mathsf{r}_\mathsf{B}\vert_0\vert\mathsf{l}_\mathsf{B}\vert_1=0,1$. To be more precise, in the first case they are enumerated by Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and in the second case their number is expressed in terms of Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
Tropicalization of facets of polytopes

It is known that any tropical polytope is the image under the valuation map of ordinary polytopes over the Puiseux series field. The latter polytopes are called lifts of the tropical polytope. We prove that any pure tropical polytope is the intersection of the tropical half-spaces given by the images under the valuation map of the facet-defining half-spaces of a certain lift. We construct this lift explicitly, taking into account geometric properties of the given polytope. Moreover, when the generators of the tropical polytope are in general position, we prove that the above property is satisfied for any lift. This solves a conjecture of Develin and Yu.
A note on statistical averages for oscillating tableaux

We define a statistic called the weight of oscillating tableaux. Oscillating tableaux, a generalization of standard Young tableaux, are certain walks in Young's lattice of partitions. The weight of an oscillating tableau is the sum of the sizes of all the partitions that it visits. We show that the average weight of all oscillating tableaux of shape lambda and length 2n plus the size of lambda has a surprisingly simple formula: it is a quadratic polynomial in the size of lambda and n. Our proof via the theory of differential posets is largely computational. We suggest how the homomesy paradigm of Propp and Roby may lead to a more conceptual proof of this result and reveal a hidden symmetry in the set of perfect matchings.
Stability of Kronecker coefficients via discrete tomography

In this paper we give a new sufficient condition for a general stability of Kronecker coefficients, which we call it additive stability. It was motivated by a recent talk of J. Stembridge at the conference in honor of Richard P. Stanley's 70th birthday, and it is based on work of the author on discrete tomography along the years. The main contribution of this paper is the discovery of the connection between additivity of integer matrices and stability of Kronecker coefficients. Additivity, in our context, is a concept from discrete tomography. Its advantage is that it is very easy to produce lots of examples of additive matrices and therefore of new instances of stability properties. We also show that Stembridge's hypothesis and additivity are closely related, and prove that all stability properties of Kronecker coefficients discovered before fit into additive stability.
Efficient winning strategies in random-turn Maker-Breaker games

We consider random-turn positional games, introduced by Peres, Schramm, Sheffield and Wilson in 2007. A $p$-random-turn positional game is a two-player game, played the same as an ordinary positional game, except that instead of alternating turns, a coin is being tossed before each turn to decide the identity of the next player to move (the probability of Player I to move is $p$). We analyze the random-turn version of several classical Maker-Breaker games such as the game Box (introduced by Chvátal and Erd\H os in 1987), the Hamilton cycle game and the $k$-vertex-connectivity game (both played on the edge set of $K_n$). For each of these games we provide each of the players with a (randomized) efficient strategy which typically ensures his win in the asymptotic order of the minimum value of $p$ for which he typically wins the game, assuming optimal strategies of both players.

We apply lattice point counting methods to compute the multiplicities in the plethysm of $GL(n)$. Our approach gives insight into the asymptotic growth of the plethysm and makes the problem amenable to computer algebra. We prove an old conjecture of Howe on the leading term of plethysm. For any partition $μ$ of 3,4, or 5 we obtain an explicit formula in $λ$ and $k$ for the multiplicity of $S^λ$ in $S^μ(S^k)$.

We give a brief history of Catalan numbers, from their first discovery in the 18th century to modern times. This note will appear as an appendix in Richard Stanley's forthcoming book on Catalan numbers.

Three-dimensional random tensor models are a natural generalization of the celebrated matrix models. The associated tensor graphs, or 3D maps, can be classified with respect to a particular integer or half-integer, the degree of the respective graph. In this paper we analyze the general term of the asymptotic expansion in N, the size of the tensor, of a particular random tensor model, the multi-orientable tensor model. We perform their enumeration and we establish which are the dominant configurations of a given degree.
The Stanley Depth in the Upper Half of the Koszul Complex
Let $R = K[X_1, ..., X_n]$ be a polynomial ring over some field $K$. In this paper, we prove that the $k$-th syzygy module of the residue class field $K$ of $R$ has Stanley depth $n-1$ for $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor \leq k < n$, as it had been conjectured by Bruns et. al. in 2010. In particular, this gives the Stanley depth for a whole family of modules whose graded components have dimension greater than $1$. So far, the Stanley depth is known only for a few examples of this type. Our proof consists in a close analysis of a matching in the Boolean algebra.
The Bounds for Eigenvalues of Normalized and Signless Laplacian Matrices

An improvement of the general bound on the largest family of subsets avoiding a subposet

Let $La(n,P)$ be the maximum size of a family of subsets of $[n]= \{1,2, ..., n \}$ not containing $P$ as a (weak) subposet, and let $h(P)$ be the length of a longest chain in $P$. The best known upper bound for $La(n,P)$ in terms of $|P|$ and $h(P)$ is due to Chen and Li, who showed that $La(n,P) \le \frac{1}{m+1} \left(|P| + \frac{1}{2}(m^2 +3m-2)(h(P)-1) -1 \right) {\binom {n} {\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}}$ for any fixed $m \ge 1$.
In this paper we show that $La(n,P) \le \frac{1}{2^{k-1}} (|P| + (3k-5)2^{k-2}(h(P)-1) - 1 ) {n \choose {\lfloor n/2\rfloor} }$ for any fixed $k \ge 2$, improving the best known upper bound. By choosing $k$ appropriately, we obtain that $La(n,P) = O\left( h(P) \log_2\left(\frac{|P|}{h(P)}+2\right) \right) {n \choose \lfloor n/2 \rfloor }$ as a corollary, which we show is best possible for general $P$. We also give a different proof of this corollary by using bounds for generalized diamonds. We also show that the Lubell function of a family of subsets of $[n]$ not containing $P$ as an induced subposet is $O(n^c)$ for every $c>\frac{1}{2}$.
On the joints problem with multiplicities
In this short note we apply a recent theorem of Kollár about the arithmetic genus of curves to give a bound on the number of joints weighted by the multiplicities. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Carbery in the generic case.
An extension of MacMahon's Equidistribution Theorem to ordered set partitions

We prove a conjecture of Haglund which can be seen as an extension of the equidistribution of the inversion number and the major index over permutations to ordered set partitions. Haglund's conjecture implicitly defines two statistics on ordered set partitions and states that they are equidistributed. The implied inversion statistic is equivalent to a statistic on ordered set partitions studied by Steingrímsson, Ishikawa, Kasraoui, and Zeng, and is known to have a nice distribution in terms of $q$-Stirling numbers. The resulting major index exhibits a combinatorial relationship between $q$-Stirling numbers and the Euler-Mahonian distribution on the symmetric group, solving a problem posed by Steingrímsson.
Distinguishing extension numbers for $\mathbf R^n$ and $S^n$
In the setting of a group $Γ$ acting faithfully on a set $X$, a $k$-coloring $c: X\rightarrow \{1, 2, ..., k\}$ is called $Γ$-distinguishing if the only element of $Γ$ that fixes $c$ is the identity element. The distinguishing number $D_Γ(X)$ is the minimum value of $k$ such that a $Γ$-distinguishing $k$-coloring of $X$ exists. Now, fixing $k= D_Γ(X)$, a subset $W\subset X$ with trivial pointwise stabilizer satisfies the precoloring extension property $P(W)$ if every precoloring $c: X-W\rightarrow \{1, ..., k\}$ can be extended to a $Γ$-distinguishing $k$-coloring of $X$. The distinguishing extension number $\text{ext}_D(X, Γ)$ is then defined to be the minimum $n$ such that for all applicable $W\subset X$, $|W|\geq n$ implies that $P(W)$ holds. In this paper, we compute $\text{ext}_D(X, Γ)$ in two particular instances: when $X = S^1$ is the unit circle and $Γ= \text{Isom}(S^1) = O(2)$ is its isometry group, and when $X = V(C_n)$ is the set of vertices of the cycle of order $n$ and $Γ= \text{Aut}(C_n) = D_n$, the dihedral group of a regular $n$-gon. This resolves two conjectures of Ferrara, Gethner, Hartke, Stolee, and Wenger. In the case of $X=\mathbf R^2$, we prove that $\text{ext}_D(\mathbf R^2, SE(2))<\infty$, which is consistent with (but does not resolve) another conjecture of Ferrara et al. On the other hand, we also prove that for all $n\geq 3$, $\text{ext}_D(S^{n-1}, O(n)) = \infty$, and for all $n\geq 3$, $\text{ext}_D(\mathbf R^n, E(n))=\infty$, disproving two other conjectures from the same authors.
