We prove sharp upper bounds on the volume and the number of lattice points on edges of higher-dimensional reflexive simplices. These convex-geometric results are derived from new number-theoretic bounds on the denominators of unit fractions summing up to one. The main algebro-geometric application is a sharp upper bound on the anticanonical degree of higher-dimensional Q-factorial Gorenstein toric Fano varieties with Picard number one, where we completely characterize the case of equality.
Equipartitions of measures in $\mathbb{R}^4$
We prove that each measure $μ$ in $R^4$ admits an equipartition by 4 hyperplanes, provided that it is symmetric with respect to a 2-dimensional, affine subspace $L$ of $R^4$. Moreover we show, by computing the complete obstruction in the relevant group of normal bordisms, that without the symmetry condition, a naturally associated topological problem has a negative solution. The computation is based on the Koschorke's exact singularity sequence and the remarkable properties of the essentially unique, balanced binary Gray code in dimension 4.

We define a q-chromatic function on graphs, list some of its properties and provide some formulas in the class of general chordal graphs. Then we relate the q-chromatic function to the colored Jones function of knots. This leads to a curious expression of the colored Jones function of a knot diagram as a 'defected chromatic operator' applied to a power series whose coefficients are linear combinations of chord diagrams constructed from 'flows' on the reduced knot diagram.
The Trivial L(F_1)-Valued moment Series of the Generating Operator of L(F_2)
In [13] and [14], we found so-called the reccurence diagram. This paper is the application of such recurrence diagram. As a first application for the reccurence diagram, we will re-compute the well-known moment series of the generating opeator of the free group factor L(F_N). Also, we will compute the trivial L(F_1)-valued moment series of the generating operator of L(F_2). This result can be extended for the general case when we have L(F_N), instead of L(F_2). To study operator-valued moment series is to study the operator-valued distribution. By doing that, we can get some algebraic and combinatorial free probability information about the operator-valued distribution of certain random variables. So, this paper provides a good example for studying the operator-valued distribution.
Longest common subsequences and the Bernoulli matching model: numerical work and analyses of the r-reach simplification
The expected length of longest common subsequences is a problem that has been in the literature for at least twenty five years. Determining the limiting constants γ_k appears to be quite difficult, and the current best bounds leave much room for improvement. Boutet de Monvel explores an independent version of the problem he calls the Bernoulli Matching model. He explores this problem and its relation to the longest common subsequence problem. This paper continues this pursuit by focusing on a simplification we term r-reach. For the string model, L_r(u,v) is the longest common subsequence of u and v given that each matched pair of letters is no more than r letters apart.

The X=M conjecture of Hatayama et al. asserts the equality between the one-dimensional configuration sum X expressed as the generating function of crystal paths with energy statistics and the fermionic formula M for all affine Kac--Moody algebra. In this paper we prove the X=M conjecture for tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals B^{1,s} associated to symmetric powers for all nonexceptional affine algebras.
Noise Stability of Weighted Majority

Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm (2001) showed that weighted majority functions of $n$ independent unbiased bits are uniformly stable under noise: when each bit is flipped with probability $ε$, the probability $p_ε$ that the weighted majority changes is at most $Cε^{1/4}$. They asked what is the best possible exponent that could replace 1/4. We prove that the answer is 1/2. The upper bound obtained for $p_ε$ is within a factor of $\sqrt{π/2}+o(1)$ from the known lower bound when $ε\to 0$ and $nε\to \infty$.
Parking functions and Haglund--Loehr data
A parking function is a sequence of N nonnegative integers majorated by a permutation of the set {0, ..., N-1}. We provide a way to encode parking functions by data suggested by J.Haglund and N.Loehr. This coding is compared with another one proposed earlier by M.Shapiro and the author.

In this paper we are concerned with three lattice problems: the lattice packing problem, the lattice covering problem and the lattice packing-covering problem. One way to find optimal lattices for these problems is to enumerate all finitely many, locally optimal lattices. For the lattice packing problem there are two classical algorithms going back to Minkowski and Voronoi. For the covering and for the packing-covering problem we propose new algorithms. Here we give a brief survey about these approaches. We report on some recent computer based computations where we were able to reproduce and partially extend the known classification of locally optimal lattices. Furthermore we found new record breaking covering and packing-covering lattices. We describe several methods with examples to show that a lattice is a locally optimal solution to one of the three problems.
SPM Bulletin 11
This issue contains, in addition to the usual contents, a special festive announcement: A book. This book by Banakh and Zdomsky seems to be the first in a planned series by these authors. We believe that the book will become a cornerstone in many future mathematical investigations, in particular in the field of infinite-combinatorial topology. The book's preliminary version is available online, as seen in the announcement, and the readers of the SPM Bulletin are encouraged to take a look and make comments.
Zdomsky has also made two detailed contributions to this issue. This is the ideal form of a contribution to the SPM Bulletin, and we urge all contributors to consider this possibility from time to time.

Symmetric functions in superspace
We construct a generalization of the theory of symmetric functions involving functions of commuting and anticommuting (Grassmannian) variables. These new functions, called symmetric functions in superspace, are invariant under the diagonal action of the symmetric group acting on the sets of commuting and anticommuting variables. We first obtain superspace analogues of a number of standard objects and concepts in the theory of symmetric functions: partitions, monomials, elementary symmetric functions, completely symmetric functions, power sums, involutions, generating functions, Cauchy formulas, and scalar products. We then consider a one-parameter extension of the combinatorial scalar product. It provides the natural setting for the definition of a family of ``combinatorial'' orthogonal Jack polynomials in superspace. We show that this family coincides with that of ``physical'' Jack polynomials in superspace that were previously introduced by the authors as orthogonal eigenfunctions of a supersymmetric quantum mechanical many-body problem. The equivalence of the two families is established by showing that the ``physical'' Jack polynomials are also orthogonal with respect to the combinatorial scalar product. This equivalence is also directly demonstrated for particular values of the free parameter.
Word Representations of m x n x p Proper Arrays
Let $m\neq n$. An $m\times n\times p$ proper array is a three-dimensional array composed of directed cubes that obeys certain constraints. Because of these constraints, the $m\times n\times p$ proper arrays may be classified via a schema in which each $m\times n\times p$ proper array is associated with a particular $m\times n$ planar face. By representing each connencted component present in the $m\times n$ planar face with a distinct letter, and the position of each outward pointing connector by a circle, an $m\times n$ array of circled letters is formed. This $m\times n$ array of circled letters is the word representation associated with the $m\times n\times p$ proper array. The main result of this paper involves the enumeration of all $m\times n$ word representations modulo symmetry, where the symmetry is derived from the group $D_2 = C_2\times C_2$ acting on the set of word representations. This enumeration is achieved by forming a linear combination of four exponential generating functions, each of which is derived from a particular symmetry operation. This linear combination counts the number of partitions of the set of $m\times n$ words representations that are inequivalent under $D_2$.
Some positive differences of products of Schur functions
The product $s_μs_ν$ of two Schur functions is one of the most famous examples of a Schur-positive function, i.e. a symmetric function which, when written as a linear combination of Schur functions, has all positive coefficients.
We ask when expressions of the form $s_λs_ρ- s_μs_ν$ are Schur-positive. This general question seems to be a difficult one, but a conjecture of Fomin, Fulton, Li and Poon says that it is the case at least when $λ$ and $ρ$ are obtained from $μ$ and $ν$ by redistributing the parts of $μ$ and $ν$ in a specific, yet natural, way. We show that their conjecture is true in several significant cases. We also formulate a skew-shape extension of their conjecture, and prove several results which serve as evidence in favor of this extension. Finally, we take a more global view by studying two classes of partially ordered sets suggested by these questions.
Extended finite operator calculus as an example of algebraization of analysis
A wardian calculus of sequences started almost seventy years ago constitutes the general scheme for extensions of the classical umbral operator calculus considered by many afterwards . At the same time this calculus is an example of the algebraization of the analysis here restricted to the algebra of formal series. This is a review article based on the recent first author contributions. As the survey article it is supplemented by the short indicatory glossaries of notation and terms used by prominent contributors to the domain.
Concerning the shape of a geometric lattice

A well-known conjecture states that the Whitney numbers of the second kind of a geometric lattice (simple matroid) are logarithmically concave. We show this conjecture to be equivalent to proving an upper bound on the number of new copoints in the free erection of the associated simple matroid M. A bound on the number of these new copoints is given in terms of the copoints and colines of M. Also, the points-lines-planes conjecture is shown to be equivalent to a problem concerning the number subgraphs of a certain bipartite graph whose vertices are the points and lines of a geometric lattice.
Letter Representations of m x n x p Proper Arrays
Let $m\neq n$. An $m\times n\times p$ {\it proper array} is a three-dimensional rectangular array composed of directed cubes that obeys certain constraints. Because of these constraints, the $m\times n\times p$ proper arrays may be classified via a schema in which each $m\times n\times p$ proper array is associated with a particular $m\times n$ planar face. By representing each connected component present in the $m\times n$ planar face with a distinct letter, an $m\times n$ array of letters is formed. This $m\times n$ array of letters is the {\it letter representation} associated with the $m\times n\times p$ proper array. The main result of this paper involves the enumeration of all $m\times n$ letter representations modulo symmetry, where the symmetry is derived from the group $D_2 = C_2\times C_2$ acting on the set of letter representations. The enumeration is achieved by forming a linear combination of four exponential generating functions, each of which is derived from a particular symmetry operation. This linear combination counts the number of partitions of the set of $m\times n$ letter representations that are inequivalent under $D_2$. This is done by forming four generating functions, each of which derives from a particular symmetry operation.
Free quasi-symmetric functions, product actions and quantum field theory of partitions
We examine two associative products over the ring of symmetric functions related to the intransitive and Cartesian products of permutation groups. As an application, we give an enumeration of some Feynman type diagrams arising in Bender's QFT of partitions. We end by exploring possibilities to construct noncommutative analogues.

For each graph we construct graded cohomology groups whose graded Euler characteristic is the chromatic polynomial of the graph. We show the cohomology groups satisfy a long exact sequence which corresponds to the well-known deletion-contraction rule. This work is motivated by Khovanov's work on categorification of the Jones polynomial of knots.
