(-1)-enumeration of plane partitions with complementation symmetry
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 30, No. 1-2, 53-95 (2003) • Search Publication
We compute the weighted enumeration of plane partitions contained in a given box with complementation symmetry where adding one half of an orbit of cubes and removing the other half of the orbit changes the weight by -1 as proposed by Kuperberg. We use nonintersecting lattice path families to accomplish this for transpose-complementary, cyclically symmetric transpose-complementary and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions. For symmetric transpose-complementary and self-complementary plane partitions we get partial results. We also describe Kuperberg's proof for the case of cyclically symmetric self-complementary plane partitions.

Enumeration of simple random walks and tridiagonal matrices
Published in J.Phys. A35 (2002) 1125-1146 • View PublicationBIB
We present some old and new results in the enumeration of random walks in one dimension, mostly developed in works of enumerative combinatorics. The relation between the trace of the $n$-th power of a tridiagonal matrix and the enumeration of weighted paths of $n$ steps allows an easier combinatorial enumeration of the paths. It also seems promising for the theory of tridiagonal random matrices .

Bipartite graphs with uniquely restricted maximum matchings and their corresponding greedoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A maximum stable set in a graph G is a stable set of maximum size. S is a local maximum stable set if it is a maximum stable set of the subgraph of G spanned by the union of S and N(S), where N(S) is the neighborhood of S. A matching M is uniquely restricted if its saturated vertices induce a subgraph which has a unique perfect matching, namely M itself. One theorem of Nemhauser and Trotter Jr., working as a useful sufficient local optimality condition for the weighted maximum stable set problem, ensures that any local maximum stable set of G can be enlarged to a maximum stable set of G. In one of our previous papers it is proven that the family of all local maximum stable sets of a forest forms a greedoid on its vertex set. In this paper we obtain a generalization of this assertion claiming that the family of all local maximum stable sets of a bipartite graph G is a greedoid if and only if all maximum matchings of G are uniquely restricted.

A Distribution Function Arising in Computational Biology
Published in in "MathPhys Odyssey 2001: Integrable Models and Beyond-In Honor of Barry M. McCoy, eds. M. Kashiwara and T. Miwa, Birkhauser Boston, 2002, pgs. 467-474. • View PublicationBIB
Karlin and Altschul in their statistical analysis for multiple high-scoring segments in molecular sequences introduced a distribution function which gives the probability there are at least r distinct and consistently ordered segment pairs all with score at least x. For long sequences this distribution can be expressed in terms of the distribution of the length of the longest increasing subsequence in a random permutation. Within the past few years, this last quantity has been extensively studied in the mathematics literature. The purpose of these notes is to summarize these new mathematical developments in a form suitable for use in computational biology.

A growth model in a random environment
Published in Ann. Probab. 30 (2002), 1340-1368. • View PublicationBIB
We consider a model of interface growth in two dimensions, given by a height function on the sites of the one--dimensional integer lattice. According to the discrete time update rule, the height above the site $x$ increases to the height above $x-1$, if the latter height is larger; otherwise the height above $x$ increases by 1 with probability $p_x$. We assume that $p_x$ are chosen independently at random with a common distribution $F$, and that the initial state is such that the origin is far above the other sites. We explicitly identify the asymptotic shape and prove that, in the pure regime, the fluctuations about that shape, normalized by the square root of time, are asymptotically normal. This contrasts with the quenched version: conditioned on the environment, and normalized by the cube root of time, the fluctuations almost surely approach a distribution known from random matrix theory.

Restricted permutations and Chebyshev polynomials
We study generating functions for the number of permutations in $\SS_n$ subject to two restrictions. One of the restrictions belongs to $\SS_3$, while the other to $\SS_k$. It turns out that in a large variety of cases the answer can be expressed via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

On multiplicities of points on Schubert varieties in Grassmannians
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 45 (2001), Article B45c, 11 pp • Search Publication
We answer some questions related to multiplicity formulas by Rosenthal and Zelevinsky and by Lakshmibai and Weyman for points on Schubert varieties in Grassmannians. In particular, we give combinatorial interpretations in terms of nonintersecting lattice paths of these formulas, which makes the equality of the two formulas immediately obvious. Furthermore we provide an alternative determinantal formula for these multiplicities, and we show that they count semistandard tableaux of unusual shapes.

Netted Binomial Matrices
In this paper we prove that a matrix property of nettedness (all 2x2 cells satisfy a recurrence) is preserved for powers of such a matrix, where the coefficients are all instances of the same sequence. Also, we find an n-dimensional analog of the Q-matrix for the general Pell(Fibonacci) sequence. We close by giving a conjecture about the spectral properties of the binomial matrix we found.

Spectral Properties of a Binomial Matrix
In this paper we study some further properties of the matrix with entries binom{i-1}{n-j}. We find the generating function for each row and column, and we find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of this matrix. We also find the spectral properties of this matrix modulo 3 and 5.

A `nice' bijection for a content formula for skew semistandard Young tableaux
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 9 (2002), #R18 • View PublicationBIB
Based on Schützenberger's evacuation and a modification of jeu de taquin, we give a bijective proof of an identity connecting the generating function of reverse semistandard Young tableaux with bounded entries with the generating function of all semistandard Young tableaux. This solves Exercise 7.102 b of Richard Stanley's book `Enumerative Combinatorics 2'.

The Sign Representation for Shephard Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Shephard groups are unitary reflection groups arising as the symmetries of regular complex polytopes. For a Shephard group, we identify the representation carried by the principal ideal in the coinvariant algebra generated by the image of the product of all linear forms defining reflecting hyperplanes. This representation turns out to have many equivalent guises making it analogous to the sign representation of a finite Coxeter group. One of these guises is (up to a twist) the cohomology of the Milnor fiber for the isolated singularity at 0 in the hypersurface defined by any homogeneous invariant of minimal degree.

On the mixing time of simple random walk on the super critical percolation cluster
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the robustness under perturbations of mixing times, by studying mixing times of random walks in percolation clusters inside boxes in $\Z^d$. We show that for $d \geq 2$ and $p > p_c(\Z^d)$, the mixing time of simple random walk on the largest cluster inside $\{-n,...,n\}^d$ is $Θ(n^2)$ - thus the mixing time is robust up to constant factor.

Induced representations of affine Hecke algebras and canonical bases of quantum groups
Published in Studies in Memory of Issai Schur, Progress in Mathematics 210, 115-153, Birkhauser 2003 • View PublicationBIB
A criterion of irreducibility for induction products of evaluation modules of type A affine Hecke algebras is given. It is derived from multiplicative properties of the canonical basis of a quantum deformation of the Bernstein-Zelevinsky ring.

The eigenvectors of the right-justified Pascal triangle
We find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the n by n matrix with (i,j) entry \binom(i-1,n-j), establishing a conjecture of Peele and Stanica. Curiously, the eigenvectors can be chosen to form a matrix which is its own inverse.

Restricted single or double signed patterns
Let $E_n^r=\{[τ]_a=(τ_1^{(a_1)},...,τ_n^{(a_n)})| τ\in S_n,\ 1\leq a_i\leq r\}$ be the set of all signed permutations on the symbols 1,2,...,n with signs 1,2,...,r. We prove, for every 2-letter signed pattern $[τ]_a$, that the number of $[τ]_a$-avoiding signed permutations in $E_n^r$ is given by the formula $\sum\limits_{j=0}^n j!(r-1)^j{n\choose j}^2$. Also we prove that there are only one Wilf class for r=1, four Wilf classes for r=2, and six Wilf classes for $r\geq 3$.

Lattice polytopes with distinct pair-sums
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let P be a lattice polytope in R^n, and let P \cap Z^n = {v_1,...,v_N}. If the N + \binom N2 points 2v_1,...,2v_N; v_1+v_2,...v_{N-1}+v_N are distinct, we say that P is a "distinct pair-sum" or "dps" polytope. We show that, if P is a dsp polytope in R^n, then N \le 2^n, and, for every n, we construct dps polytopes in R^n which contain 2^n lattice points. We also discuss the relation between dps polytopes and the study of sums of squares of real polynomials.

Oriented Lagrangian Orthogonal Matroid Representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we extend the theory of oriented matroids to Lagrangian orthogonal matroids and their representations, and give a completely natural transformation from a representation of a classical oriented matroid to a representation of the same oriented matroid considered as a Lagrangian orthogonal matroid. Classical concepts of orientation and this extension may both be thought of as stratifications of thin Schubert cells into unions of connected components.

Orthogonal polynomials associated with root systems
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 45 (2000), Article B45a, 40 pp • Search Publication
Let R and S be two irreducible root systems spanning the same vector space and having the same Weyl group W, such that S (but not necessarily R) is reduced. For each such pair (R,S) we construct a family of W-invariant orthogonal polynomials in several variables, whose coefficients are rational functions of parameters $q,t_1,t_2,...,t_r$, where r (=1,2 or 3) is the number of W-orbits in R. For particular values of these parameters, these polynomials give the values of zonal spherical functions on real and p-adic symmetric spaces. Also when R=S is of type $A_n$, they conincide with the symmetric polynomials described in I. G. Macdonald, Symmetric Functions and Hall Polynomials, 2nd edition, Oxford University Press (1995), Chapter VI.

A non-automatic (!) application of Gosper's algorithm evaluates a determinant from tiling enumeration
Published in Rocky Mountain J. Math. 32 (2002), 589-605. • View PublicationBIB
We evaluate the determinant $\det_{1\leq i,j\leq n}(\binom{x+y+j}{x-i+2j}-\binom{x+y+j}{x+i+2j})$, which gives the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with cut off corners. A particularly interesting feature of this evaluation is that it requires the proof of a certain hypergeometric identity which we accomplish by using Gosper's algorithm in a non-automatic fashion.

Small Maximal Independent Sets and Faster Exact Graph Coloring
Published in J. Graph Algorithms & Applications 7(2):131-140, 2003 • View PublicationBIB
We show that, for any n-vertex graph G and integer parameter k, there are at most 3^{4k-n}4^{n-3k} maximal independent sets I \subset G with |I| <= k, and that all such sets can be listed in time O(3^{4k-n} 4^{n-3k}). These bounds are tight when n/4 <= k <= n/3. As a consequence, we show how to compute the exact chromatic number of a graph in time O((4/3 + 3^{4/3}/4)^n) ~= 2.4150^n, improving a previous O((1+3^{1/3})^n) ~= 2.4422^n algorithm of Lawler (1976).
