Alternating Sign Pentagons and Magog Pentagons
Alternating sign triangles have been introduced by Ayyer, Behrend and Fischer in 2016 and it was proven that there is the same number of alternating sign triangles with $n$ rows as there is of $n\times n$ alternating sign matrices. Later on Fischer gave a refined enumeration of alternating sign triangles with respect to a statistic $ρ$, having the same distribution as the unique 1 in the top row of an alternating sign matrix, by connecting alternating sign triangles to $(0,n,n)$- Magog trapezoids. We introduce two more statistics counting the all $0$-columns on the left and right in an alternating sign triangle yielding objects we call alternating sign pentagons. We then show the equinumeracy of these alternating sign pentagons with Magog pentagons of a certain shape taking into account the statistic $ρ$. Furthermore we deduce a generating function of these alternating sign pentagons with respect to the statistic $ρ$ in terms of a Pfaffian and consider the implications of our new results on some open conjectures.
Diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices
The enumeration of diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DSASMs) is studied, and a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of DSASMs of any fixed size, where the entries for the Pfaffian are positive integers given by simple binomial coefficient expressions. This result provides the first known case of an exact enumeration formula for an alternating sign matrix symmetry class in which a simple product formula does not seem to exist. Pfaffian formulae are also obtained for DSASM generating functions associated with several natural statistics, including the number of nonzero strictly upper triangular entries in a DSASM, the number of nonzero diagonal entries in a DSASM, and the column of the unique 1 in the first row of a DSASM. The proofs of these results involve introducing a version of the six-vertex model whose configurations are in bijection with DSASMs of fixed size, and obtaining a Pfaffian expression for its partition function. Various further results and conjectures are also obtained, including some related to the exact enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices, and some related to the asymptotic enumeration of DSASMs and other classes of alternating sign matrices.

We review the connections between the octahedral recurrence, $λ$-determinants and tiling problems. This provides in particular a direct combinatorial interpretation of the $λ$-determinant (and generalizations thereof) of an arbitrary matrix in terms of domino tilings of Aztec diamonds. We also reinterpret the general Robbins-Rumsey formula for the rational function of consecutive minors, given by a summation over pairs of compatible alternating sign matrices, as the partition function for tilings of Aztec diamonds equipped with a general measure.
Constructing generalized Heffter arrays via near alternating sign matrices
Let $S$ be a subset of a group $G$ (not necessarily abelian) such that $S\,\cap -S$ is empty or contains only elements of order $2$, and let $\mathbf{h}=(h_1,\ldots, h_m)\in \mathbb{N}^m$ and $\mathbf{k}=(k_1, \ldots, k_n)\in \mathbb{N}^n$. A generalized Heffter array GHA$^λ_S(m, n; \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{k})$ over $G$ is an $m\times n$ matrix $A=(a_{ij})$ such that: the $i$-th row (resp. $j$-th column) of $A$ contains exactly $h_i$ (resp. $k_j$) nonzero elements, and the list $\{a_{ij}, -a_{ij}\mid a_{ij}\neq 0\}$ equals $λ$ times the set $S\,\cup\, -S$. We speak of a zero sum (resp. nonzero sum) GHA if each row and each column of $A$ sums to zero (resp. a nonzero element), with respect to some ordering.
In this paper, we use near alternating sign matrices to build both zero and nonzero sum GHAs, over cyclic groups, having the further strong property of being simple. In particular, we construct zero sum and simple GHAs whose row and column weights are congruent to $0$ modulo $4$. This result also provides the first infinite family of simple (classic) Heffter arrays to be rectangular ($m\neq n$) and with less than $n$ nonzero entries in each row. Furthermore, we build nonzero sum GHA$^λ_S(m, n; \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{k})$ over an arbitrary group $G$ whenever $S$ contains enough noninvolutions, thus extending previous nonconstructive results where $\pm S = G\setminus H$ for some subgroup $H$~of~$G$.
Finally, we describe how GHAs can be used to build orthogonal decompositions and biembeddings of Cayley graphs (over groups not necessarily abelian) onto orientable surfaces.
New bijective proofs pertaining to alternating sign matrices
The alternating sign matrices-descending plane partitions (ASM-DPP) bijection problem is one of the most intriguing open problems in bijective combinatorics, which is also relevant to integrable combinatorics. The notion of a signed set and a signed bijection is used in [Fischer, I. \& Konvalinka, M., Electron. J. Comb., 27 (2020) 3-35.] to construct a bijection between $\text{ASM}_n \times \text{DPP}_{n-1}$ and $\text{DPP}_n \times \text{ASM}_{n-1}$. Here, we shall construct a more natural alternative to a signed bijection between alternating sign matrices and shifted Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns which is presented in that paper, based on the notion of compatibility which we introduce to measure the naturalness of a signed bijection. In addition, we give a bijective proof for the refined enumeration of an extension of alternating sign matrices with $n+3$ statistics, first proved in [Fischer, I. \& Schreier-Aigner, F., Advances in Mathematics 413 (2023) 108831.].

We characterize totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions (TSSCPP) as bounded compatible sequences satisfying a Yamanouchi-like condition. As such, they are in bijection with certain pipe dreams. Using this characterization and the recent bijection of [Gao-Huang] between reduced pipe dreams and reduced bumpless pipe dreams, we give a bijection between alternating sign matrices and TSSCPP in the reduced, 1432-avoiding case. We also give a different bijection in the 1432- and 2143-avoiding case that preserves natural poset structures on the associated pipe dreams and bumpless pipe dreams.
Off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond

We introduce a new symmetry class of domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, called the off-diagonal symmetry class, which is motivated by the off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices introduced by Kuperberg in 2002. We use the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths to enumerate our new symmetry class. The number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond can be expressed as a Pfaffian of a matrix whose entries satisfy a nice and simple recurrence relation.
(-1)-Enumerations of arrowed Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns
Arrowed Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns have recently been introduced to study alternating sign matrices. In this paper, we show that a $(-1)$-enumeration of arrowed Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns can be expressed by a simple product formula. The numbers are a one-parameter generalization of the numbers $2^{n(n-1)/2} \prod_{j=0}^{n-1} \frac{(4j+2)!}{(n+2j+1)!}$ that appear in recent work of Di Francesco. A second result concerns the (-1)-enumeration of arrowed Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns when excluding double-arrows as decoration in which case we also obtain a simple product formula. We are also able to provide signless interpretations of our results. The proofs of the enumeration formulas are based on a recent Littlewood-type identity, which allows us to reduce the problem to the evaluations of two determinants. The evaluations are accomplished by means of the LU-decompositions of the underlying matrices, and an extension of Sister Celine's algorithm as well as creative telescoping to evaluate certain triple sums. In particular, we use implementations of such algorithms by Koutschan, and by Wegschaider and Riese.
Bounded Littlewood identity related to alternating sign matrices

An identity that is reminiscent of the Littlewood identity plays a fundamental role in recent proofs of the facts that alternating sign triangles are equinumerous with totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions and that alternating sign trapezoids are equinumerous with holey cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon. We establish a bounded version of a generalization of this identity. Further, we provide combinatorial interpretations of both sides of the identity. The ultimate goal would be to construct a combinatorial proof of this identity (possibly via an appropriate variant of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence) and its unbounded version as this would improve the understanding of the relation between alternating sign trapezoids and plane partition objects.
Weighted projections of alternating sign matrices: Latin-like squares and the ASM polytope
The weighted projection of an alternating sign matrix (ASM) was introduced by Brualdi and Dahl (2018) as a step towards characterising a generalisation of Latin squares they introduced using alternating sign hypermatrices. If $z_n = (n,\dots,2,1)$, then the weighted projection of an ASM $A$ is equal to $z_n^TA$. Brualdi and Dahl proved that the weighted projection of an $n \times n$ ASM is majorized by the vector $z_n$, and conjectured that any positive integer vector majorized by $z_n$ is the weighted projection of some ASM. The main result of this paper presents a proof of this conjecture, via monotone triangles. A relaxation of a monotone triangle, called a row-increasing triangle, is introduced. It is shown that for any row-increasing triangle $T$, there exists a monotone triangle $M$ such that each entry of $M$ occurs the same number of times as in $T$. A construction is also outlined for an ASM with given weighted projection. The relationship of the main result to existing results concerning the ASM polytope $ASM_n$ is examined, and a characterisation is given for the relationship between elements of $ASM_n$ corresponding to the same point in the permutohedron of order $n$. Finally, the limitations of the main result for characterising alternating sign hypermatrix Latin-like squares is considered.
Alternating sign matrices with reflective symmetry and plane partitions: $n+3$ pairs of equivalent statistics and a Cauchy-type identity

Vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices (VSASMs) of order $2n+1$ are known to be equinumerous with lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $2n+2$, $2n$, $2n+2$, $2n$, $2n+2$, $2n$ and a central triangular hole of size $2$ that exhibit a cyclical as well as a vertical symmetry, but finding an explicit bijection proving this belongs to the most difficult problems in bijective combinatorics. Towards constructing such a bijection, we generalize the result by introducing certain natural extensions for both objects along with $n+3$ parameters and show that the multivariate generating functions with respect to these parameters coincide. This is a significant step from a constant number of equidistributed statistics to a linear number of statistics in $n$. The equinumeracy of VSASMs and the lozenge tilings is then an easy consequence of this result, which is obtained by specializing the generating functions to signed enumerations for both types of objects and then applying certain sign-reversing involutions. Another main result concerns the expansion of the multivariate generating function into symplectic characters as a sum over totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions, which is in perfect analogy to the situation for ordinary ASMs where the Schur expansion can be written as a sum over totally symmetric plane partitions. This is exciting as it is reminiscent of the well-known Cauchy identity, and the Cauchy identity does have a bijective proof using the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence, and thus the result raises the question of whether there is a variation of the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence that does eventually lead to a bijective proof.

Combinatorial Exploration is a new domain-agnostic algorithmic framework to automatically and rigorously study the structure of combinatorial objects and derive their counting sequences and generating functions. We describe how it works and provide an open-source Python implementation. As a prerequisite, we build up a new theoretical foundation for combinatorial decomposition strategies and combinatorial specifications.
We then apply Combinatorial Exploration to the domain of permutation patterns, to great effect. We rederive hundreds of results in the literature in a uniform manner and prove many new ones. These results can be found in a new public database, the Permutation Pattern Avoidance Library (PermPAL) at https://permpal.com. Finally, we give three additional proofs-of-concept, showing examples of how Combinatorial Exploration can prove results in the domains of alternating sign matrices, polyominoes, and set partitions.

We introduce a new family $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}$ of Schur positive symmetric functions, which are defined as sums over totally symmetric plane partitions. In the first part, we show that, for $k=1$, this family is equal to a multivariate generating function involving $n+3$ variables of objects that extend alternating sign matrices (ASMs), which have recently been introduced by the authors. This establishes a new connection between ASMs and a class of plane partitions, thereby complementing the fact that ASMs are equinumerous with totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions as well as with descending plane partitions. The proof is based on a new antisymmetrizer-to-determinant formula for which we also provide a bijective proof. In the second part, we relate three specialisation of $\mathcal{A}_{n,k}$ to a weighted enumeration of certain well-known classes of column strict shifted plane partitions that generalise descending plane partitions.
Cylindric plane partitions, Lambda determinants, Commutants in semicircular systems
This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part deals with cylindric plane partitions. The second with lambda-determinants and the third with commutators in semi-circular systems. For more detailed abstract please see inside.
Cylindric plane partitions may be thought of as a natural generalization of reverse plane partitions. A generating series for the enumeration of cylindric plane partitions was recently given by Borodin. The first result of section one is a new bijective proof of Borodin's identity which makes use of Fomin's growth diagram framework for generalized RSK correspondences. The second result is a $(q,t)$-analog of Borodin's identity which extends previous work by Okada in the reverse plane partition case. The third result is an explicit combinatorial interpretation of the Macdonald weight occurring in the $(q,t)$-analog using the non-intersecting lattice path model for cylindric plane partitions.
Alternating sign matrices were discovered by Robbins and Rumsey whilst studying \emph{$λ$-determinants}. In the second part of this thesis we prove a multi-parameter generalization of the $λ$-determinant, generalizing a recent result by di Francesco. Like the original $λ$-determinant, our formula exhibits the \emph{Laurent phenomenon}.
Semicircular systems were first introduced by Voiculescu as a part of his study of von Neumann algebras. In the third part of this thesis we study certain commutator subalgebras of the semicircular system. We find a projection matrix with an interesting self-similar structure. Making use of our projection formula we given an alternative, elementary proof that the semicircular system is a factor.
Alternating sign matrices of finite multiplicative order
We investigate alternating sign matrices that are not permutation matrices, but have finite order in a general linear group. We classify all such examples of the form $P+T$, where $P$ is a permutation matrix and $T$ has four non-zero entries, forming a square with entries $1$ and $-1$ in each row and column. We show that the multiplicative orders of these matrices do not always coincide with those of permutation matrices of the same size. We pose the problem of identifying finite subgroups of general linear groups that are generated by alternating sign matrices.

The six-vertex model is an important toy-model in statistical mechanics for two-dimensional ice with a natural parameter $Δ$. When $Δ= 0$, the so-called free-fermion point, the model is in natural correspondence with domino tilings of the Aztec diamond. Although this model is integrable for all $Δ$, there has been very little progress in understanding its statistics in the scaling limit for other values. In this work, we focus on the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions at $Δ= 1/2$, where it corresponds to alternating sign matrices (ASMs). We consider the level lines in a height function representation of ASMs. We show that the maximum of the topmost level line for a uniformly random ASMs has the GOE Tracy--Widom distribution after appropriate rescaling. A key ingredient in our proof is Zeilberger's proof of the ASM conjecture. As far as we know, this is the first edge fluctuation result away from the tangency points for the domain-wall six-vertex model when we are not in the free fermion case.

We show that the poset of alternating sign matrices, with Bruhat order, is isomorphic to the poset of certain submodules of the dominant Verma module for the special linear Lie algebra $\frak{sl}_n$. The latter poset consists of the intersections of Verma submodules and can also be defined in terms of a Kazhdan-Lusztig cell.
Connectivity of Alternating Sign Triangle
Alternating sign triangles were introduced by Carroll and Speyer in relation to cube recurrence, by analogy to alternating sign matrices for octahedron recurrence. In this paper, we prove the connectivity of alternating sign triangles, which is analogous to the connectivity of alternating sign matrices.
The relation between alternating sign matrices and descending plane partitions: $n+3$ pairs of equivalent statistics

There is the same number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices (ASMs) as there is of descending plane partitions (DPPs) with parts no greater than $n$, but finding an explicit bijection is an open problem for about $40$ years now. So far, quadruples of statistics on ASMs and on DPPs that have the same joint distribution have been identified. We introduce extensions of ASMs and of DPPs along with $n+3$ statistics on each extension, and show that the two families of statistics have the same joint distribution. The ASM-DPP equinumerosity is obtained as an easy consequence by considering the $(-1)$-enumerations of these extended objects with respect to one pair of the $n+3$ pairs of statistics. One may speculate that the fact that these extensions might be necessary to have this significance increase in the number of statistics, as well as the involvement of signs when specializing to ASMs and DPPs may hint at the obstacles in finding an explicit bijection between ASMs and DPPs. One important tool for our proof is a multivariate generalization of the operator formula for the number of monotone triangles with prescribed bottom row that generalizes Schur functions.
Characterizing Alternating Sign Triangles
Alternating sign triangles were introduced by Carroll and Speyer in relation to cube recurrence, by analogy to alternating sign matrices for octahedron recurrence. Permutation triangles are the alternating sign triangles whose entries are either 0 or 1, by analogy with permutation matrices. In this paper, we prove a simple characterization of permutation triangles, originally conjectured by Glick. We will also prove some properties of alternating sign triangles.
