On Schubert varieties of complexity one
Published in Pacific J. Math. 315 (2021) 419-447 • View PublicationBIB
Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathbb{T}$ a maximal torus contained in $B$. Then $\mathbb{T}$ acts on $\mathrm{GL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})/B$ and every Schubert variety is $\mathbb{T}$-invariant. We say that a Schubert variety is of complexity $k$ if a maximal $\mathbb{T}$-orbit in $X_w$ has codimension $k$. In this paper, we discuss topology, geometry, and combinatorics related to Schubert varieties of complexity one.

Grossberg-Karshon twisted cubes and hesitant jumping walk avoidance
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics (E-JC) Volume 27, Issue 3 (2020) #P3.34 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a complex simply-laced semisimple algebraic group of rank $r$ and $B$ a Borel subgroup. Let $\mathbf i \in [r]^n$ be a word and let $\mathbf \ell = (\ell_1,\dots,\ell_n)$ be a sequence of non-negative integers. Grossberg and Karshon introduced a virtual lattice polytope associated to $\mathbf i$ and $\mathbf \ell$ called a twisted cube, whose lattice points encode the character of a $B$-representation. More precisely, lattice points in the twisted cube, counted with sign according to a certain density function, yields the character of the generalized Demazure module determined by $\mathbf i$ and $\mathbf \ell$. In recent work, the author and Harada described precisely when the Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted, i.e., the twisted cube is a closed convex polytope, in the situation when the integer sequence $\mathbf \ell$ comes from a weight $λ$ of $G$. However, not every integer sequence $\mathbf \ell$ comes from a weight of $G$. In the present paper, we interpret untwistedness of Grossberg-Karshon twisted cubes associated to any word $\mathbf i$ and any integer sequence $\mathbf \ell$ using the combinatorics of $\mathbf i$ and $\mathbf \ell$. Indeed, we prove that the Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted precisely when $\mathbf i$ is hesitant-jumping-$\mathbf \ell$-walk-avoiding.

The Boolean intervals of Chevalley type are strongly non group-complemented
Let G be a finite Chevalley group and B a Borel subgroup. Then the interval [B,G] in L(G) is Boolean. We prove, using Zsigmondy's theorem, that for any element P in the open interval (B,G), its lattice-complement P^c is not a group-complement.

Torus orbit closures in flag varieties and retractions on Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A finite Coxeter group $W$ has a natural metric $d$ and if $\mathcal{M}$ is a subset of $W$, then for each $u\in W$, there is $q\in \mathcal{M}$ such that $d(u,q)=d(u,\mathcal{M})$. Such $q$ is not unique in general but if $\mathcal{M}$ is a Coxeter matroid, then it is unique, and we define a retraction $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}\colon W\to \mathcal{M}\subset W$ so that $\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}(u)=q$. The $T$-fixed point set $Y^T$ of a $T$-orbit closure $Y$ in a flag variety $G/B$ is a Coxeter matroid, where $G$ is a semisimple algebraic group, $B$ is a Borel subgroup, and $T$ is a maximal torus of $G$ contained in $B$. We define a retraction $\mathcal{R}^g_{Y}\colon W\to Y^T\subset W$ geometrically, where $W$ is the Weyl group of $G$, and show that $\mathcal{R}^g_{Y}=\mathcal{R}^m_{Y^T}$. We introduce another retraction $\mathcal{R}^a_{\mathcal{M}}\colon W\to \mathcal{M}\subset W$ algebraically for an arbitrary subset $\mathcal{M}$ of $W$ when $W$ is a Weyl group of classical Lie type, and show that $\mathcal{R}^a_{\mathcal{M}}=\mathcal{R}^m_{\mathcal{M}}$ when $\mathcal{M}$ is a Coxeter matroid.

Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over the field $\mathbb{C}$ of complex numbers, $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $w$ be an element of the Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in $G/B$ corresponding to $w$. In this article we show that given any parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$ containing $B$ properly, there is an element $w\in W$ such that $P$ is the connected component, containing the identity element of the group of all algebraic automorphisms of $X(w).$

Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of adjoint type over $\mathbb{C},$ whose root system is of type $F_{4}.$ Let $T$ be a maximal torus of $G$ and $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing $T.$ Let $w$ be an element of Weyl group $W$ and $X(w)$ be the Schubert variety in the flag variety $G/B$ corresponding to $w.$ Let $Z(w, \underline{i})$ be the Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety (the desingularization of $X(w)$) corresponding to a reduced expression $\underline{i}$ of $w.$ In this article, we study the cohomology modules of the tangent bundle on $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i}),$ where $w_{0}$ is the longest element of the Weyl group $W.$ We describe all the reduced expressions of $w_{0}$ in terms of a Coxeter element such that $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i})$ is rigid (see Theorem 8.1). Further, if $G$ is of type $G_{2},$ there is no reduced expression $\underline{i}$ of $w_{0}$ for which $Z(w_{0}, \underline{i})$ is rigid (see Theorem 8.2).

$DIII$ clan combinatorics for the orthogonal Grassmannian
Borel subgroup orbits of the classical symmetric space $SO_{2n}/GL_n$ are parametrized by $DIII$ $(n,n)$-clans. We group the clans into "sects" corresponding to Schubert cells of the orthogonal Grassmannian, thus providing a cell decomposition for $SO_{2n}/GL_n$. We also compute a recurrence for the rank polynomial of the weak order poset on $DIII$ clans, and then describe explicit bijections between such clans, diagonally symmetric rook placements, certain pairs of minimally intersecting set partitions, and a class of weighted Delannoy paths. Clans of the largest sect are in bijection with fixed-point-free partial involutions.

Sects and lattice paths over the Lagrangian Grassmannian
We examine Borel subgroup orbits in the classical symmetric space of type CI, which are parametrized by skew symmetric (n, n)-clans. We describe bijections between such clans, certain weighted lattice paths, and pattern-avoiding signed involutions, and we give a cell decomposition of the symmetric space in terms of collections of clans called sects. The largest sect with a conjectural closure order is isomorphic (as a poset) to the Bruhat order on partial involutions.
Convolution Algebras for Finite Reductive Monoids
For an arbitrary finite monoid $M$ and subgroup $K$ of the unit group of $M$, we prove that there is a bijection between irreducible representations of $M$ with nontrivial $K$-fixed space and irreducible representations of $\mathcal{H}_K$, the convolution algebra of $K\times K$-invariant functions from $M$ to $F$, where $F$ is a field of characteristic not dividing $|K|$. When $M$ is reductive and $K = B$ is a Borel subgroup of the group of units, this indirectly provides a connection between irreducible representations of $M$ and those of $F[R]$, where $R$ is the Renner monoid of $M$. We conclude with a quick proof of Frobenius Reciprocity for monoids for reference in future papers.

Gradedness of the set of rook placements in $A_{n-1}$
A rook placement is a subset of a root system consisting of positive roots with pairwise non-positive inner products. To each rook placement in a root system one can assign the coadjoint orbit of the Borel subgroup of a reductive algebraic group with this root system. Degenerations of such orbits induce a natural partial order on the set of rook placements. We study combinatorial structure of the set of rook placements in $A_{n-1}$ with respect to a slightly different order and prove that this poset is graded.

On involutions in the Weyl group and $B$-orbit closures in the orthogonal case
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study coadjoint $B$-orbits on $\mathfrak{n}^*$, where $B$ is a Borel subgroup of a complex orthogonal group $G$, and $\mathfrak{n}$ is the Lie algebra of the unipotent radical of $B$. To each basis involution $w$ in the Weyl group $W$ of $G$ one can assign the associated $B$-orbit $Ω_w$. We prove that, given basis involutions $σ$, $τ$ in $W$, if the orbit $Ω_σ$ is contained in the closure of the orbit $Ω_τ$ then $σ$ is less than or equal to $τ$ with respect to the Bruhat order on $W$. For a basis involution $w$, we also compute the dimension of $Ω_w$ and present a conjectural description of the closure of $Ω_w$.
Parabolic orbits of $2$-nilpotent elements for classical groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the conjugation-action of the Borel subgroup of the symplectic or the orthogonal group on the variety of nilpotent complex elements of nilpotency degree $2$ in its Lie algebra. We translate the setup to a representation-theoretic context in the language of a symmetric quiver algebra. This makes it possible to provide a parametrization of the orbits via a combinatorial tool that we call symplectic/orthogonal oriented link patterns. We deduce information about numerology. We then generalize these classifications to standard parabolic subgroups for all classical groups. Finally, our results are restricted to the nilradical.

Association schemes on the Schubert cells of a Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be any field. The Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(m,n)$ is the set of $m$-dimensional subspaces in $\mathbb{F}^n$, and the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{F})$ acts transitively on it. The Schubert cells of $\mathrm{Gr}(m,n)$ are the orbits of the Borel subgroup $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{F})$ on $\mathrm{Gr}(m,n)$. We consider the association scheme on each Schubert cell defined by the $\mathcal{B}$-action and show it is symmetric and it is the generalized wreath product of one-class association schemes, which was introduced by R. A. Bailey [European Journal of Combinatorics 27 (2006) 428--435].

Combinatorial Models for the Variety of Complete Quadrics
We develop several combinatorial models that are useful in the study of the $SL_n$-variety $\mathcal{X}$ of complete quadrics. Barred permutations parameterize the fixed points of the action of a maximal torus $T$ of $SL_n$, while $μ$-involutions parameterize the orbits of a Borel subgroup of $SL_n$. Using these combinatorial objects, we characterize the $T$-stable curves and surfaces on $\mathcal{X}$, compute the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of $\mathcal{X}$, and describe a Białynicki-Birula cell decomposition for $\mathcal{X}$. Furthermore, we give a computational characterization of the Bruhat order on Borel orbits in $\mathcal{X}$.

On Boolean intervals of finite groups
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 157 (2018), 49-69 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a dual version of Øystein Ore's theorem on distributive intervals in the subgroup lattice of finite groups, having a nonzero dual Euler totient $\hat{\varphi}$. For any Boolean group-complemented interval, we observe that $\hat{\varphi} = \varphi \neq 0$ by the original Ore's theorem. We also discuss some applications in representation theory. We conjecture that $\hat{\varphi}$ is always nonzero for Boolean intervals. In order to investigate it, we prove that for any Boolean group-complemented interval $[H,G]$, the graded coset poset $\hat{P} = \hat{C}(H,G)$ is Cohen-Macaulay and the nontrivial reduced Betti number of the order complex $Δ(P)$ is $\hat{\varphi}$, so nonzero. We deduce that these results are true beyond the group-complemented case with $|G:H|<32$. One observes that they are also true when $H$ is a Borel subgroup of $G$.

Accessible Proof of Standard Monomial Basis for Coordinatization of Schubert Sets of Flags
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main results of this paper are accessible with only basic linear algebra. Given an increasing sequence of dimensions, a flag in a vector space is an increasing sequence of subspaces with those dimensions. The set of all such flags (the flag manifold) can be projectively coordinatized using products of minors of a matrix. These products are indexed by tableaux on a Young diagram. A basis of "standard monomials" for the vector space generated by such projective coordinates over the entire flag manifold has long been known. A Schubert variety is a subset of flags specified by a permutation. Lakshmibai, Musili, and Seshadri gave a standard monomial basis for the smaller vector space generated by the projective coordinates restricted to a Schubert variety. Reiner and Shimozono made this theory more explicit by giving a straightening algorithm for the products of the minors in terms of the right key of a Young tableau. Since then, Willis introduced scanning tableaux as a more direct way to obtain right keys. This paper uses scanning tableaux to give more-direct proofs of the spanning and the linear independence of the standard monomials. In the appendix it is noted that this basis is a weight basis for the dual of a Demazure module for a Borel subgroup of GL(n). This paper contains a complete proof that the characters of these modules (the key polynomials) can be expressed as the sums of the weights for the tableaux used to index the standard monomial bases.

Non-Archimedean Whittaker functions as characters: a probabilistic approach to the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2016) • View PublicationBIB
For a reductive group $G$ over a non-Archimedean local field (e.g $GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$ ), Jacquet's Whittaker function is essentially proportional to a character of an irreducible representation of the Langlands dual group $G^\vee( \mathbb{C} )$ ( a Schur function if $G = GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$). We propose a probabilistic approach to this claim, known as the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula, when the group $G$ has at least one minuscule cocharacter in the coweight lattice. Our presentation goes along the following lines. Thanks to a minuscule random walk $W^{(z)}$ on the coweight lattice and a related random walk on the Borel subgroup, we establish a Poisson kernel formula for the non-Archimedean Whittaker function. The expression and its ingredients are similar to the one previously obtained by the author in the Archimedean case. A simple manipulation reduces the problem to evaluating the probability of $W^{(z)}$ never exiting the Weyl chamber. Then, an implementation of the reflection principle forces the appearance of the Weyl character formula and therefore retrieves characters of $G^\vee\left( \mathbb{C} \right)$. The construction of the random walk on the Borel subgroup requires some care. It is extracted from a spherical random walk whose increments have a distribution that can be understood as elements from the spherical Hecke algebra.

On the order of Borel subgroups of group amalgams and an application to locally-transitive graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A permutation group is called semiprimitive if each of its normal subgroups is either transitive or semiregular. Given nontrivial finite transitive permutation groups $L_1$ and $L_2$ with $L_1$ not semiprimitive, we construct an infinite family of rank two amalgams of permutation type $[L_1,L_2]$ and Borel subgroups of strictly increasing order. As an application, we show that there is no bound on the order of edge-stabilisers in locally $[L_1,L_2]$ graphs. We also consider the corresponding question for amalgams of rank $k\geq 3$. We completely resolve this by showing that the order of the Borel subgroup is bounded by the permutation type $[L_1,...,L_k]$ only in the trivial case where each of $L_1,...,L_k$ is regular.

$q$-Analogs of $t$-Wise Balanced Designs from Borel Subgroups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $t\text{-}(n,K,λ;q)$ design, also called the $q$-analog of a $t$-wise balanced design, is a set ${\mathcal B}$ of subspaces with dimensions contained in $K$ of the $n$-dimensional vector space ${\mathbb F}_q^n$ over the finite field with $q$ elements such that each $t$-subspace of ${\mathbb F}_q^n$ is contained in exactly $λ$ elements of ${\mathcal B}$. In this paper we give a construction of an infinite series of nontrivial $t\text{-}(n,K,λ;q)$ designs with $|K|=2$ for all dimensions $t\ge 1$ and all prime powers $q$ admitting the standard Borel subgroup as group of automorphisms. Furthermore, replacing $q=1$ gives an ordinary $t$-wise balanced design defined on sets.
