Counting compatible indexing systems for $C_{p^n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We count the number of compatible pairs of indexing systems for the cyclic group $C_{p^n}$. Building on work of Balchin--Barnes--Roitzheim, we show that this sequence of natural numbers is another family of Fuss--Catalan numbers. We count this two different ways: showing how the conditions of compatibility give natural recursive formulas for the number of admissible sets and using an enumeration of ways to extend indexing systems by conceptually simpler pieces.

Series acceleration formulas obtained from experimentally discovered hypergeometric recursions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2010, Kh. Hessami Pilehrood and T. Hessami Pilehrood introduced generating function identities used to obtain series accelerations for values of Dirichlet's $β$ function, via the Markov--Wilf--Zeilberger method. Inspired by these past results, together with related results introduced by Chu et al., we introduce a variety of hypergeometric recurrences. We prove these recurrences using the WZ method, and we apply these recurrences to obtain series acceleration identities. We introduce a family of summations generalizing a Ramanujan-type series for $\frac{1}{π^2}$ due to Guillera, and a family of summations generalizing an accelerated series for Catalan's constant due to Lupaş, and many related results.

Counting closed walks in infinite regular trees using Catalan and Borel's triangles
We count the number of closed walks on a vertex in a regular tree using the Catalan's triangle and also the Borel's triangle, showing another combinatorial structure counted by these two array of numbers.

Conjectures on Somos $4$, $6$ and $8$ sequences using Riordan arrays and the Catalan numbers
We give conjectures on the form of families of integer sequences whose Hankel transforms are, respectively, $(α, β)$ Somos $4$ sequences, $(α, 0, γ)$ Somos $6$ sequences, and $(α, β, γ, δ)$ Somos $8$ sequences, for particular values of $α$, $β$, $γ$, $δ$ which we describe. The sequences involved can be described in terms of the application of certain stretched Riordan arrays to the Catalan numbers, accompanied by a (sequence) Hankel transform. The combination of Riordan array and the Catalan numbers results from the study of certain generalized Jacobi continued fractions, based on the Counting Automata Methodology.

$(p,q,t)$-Catalan continued fractions, gamma expansions and pattern avoidances
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a kind of $(p, q, t)$-Catalan numbers of Type A by generalizing the Jacobian type continued fraction formula, we proved that the corresponding expansions could be expressed by the polynomials counting permutations on $§_n(321)$ by various descent statistics. Moreover, we introduce a kind of $(p, q, t)$-Catalan numbers of Type B by generalizing the Jacobian type continued fraction formula, we proved that the Taylor coefficients and their $γ$-coefficients could be expressed by the polynomials counting permutations on $§_n(3124, 4123, 3142, 4132)$ by various descent statistics. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving variations of bijections from permutation patterns to labeled Motzkin paths and modified Foata-Strehl action.

Catalan numbers as discrepancies for a family of substitutions on infinite alphabets
In this work, we consider a class of substitutions on infinite alphabets and show that they exhibit a growth behaviour which is impossible for substitutions on finite alphabets. While for both settings the leading term of the tile counting function is exponential (and guided by the inflation factor), the behaviour of the second-order term is strikingly different. For the finite setting, it is known that the second term is also exponential or exponential times a polynomial. We exhibit a large family of examples where the second term is at least exponential in $n$ divided by half-integer powers of $n$, where $n$ is the number of substitution steps. In particular, we provide an identity for this discrepancy in terms of linear combinations of Catalan numbers.

Generic curves and non-coprime Catalans
Published in Algebraic Geometry, 2024 • Search Publication
We compute the Poincaré polynomials of the compactified Jacobians for plane curve singularities with Puiseaux exponents $(nd,md,md+1)$, and relate them to the combinatorics of $q,t$-Catalan numbers in the non-coprime case. We also confirm a conjecture of Cherednik and Danilenko for such curves.
Towards the Gaussianity of Random Zeckendorf Games
Published • View PublicationBIB
Zeckendorf proved that any positive integer has a unique decomposition as a sum of non-consecutive Fibonacci numbers, indexed by $F_1 = 1, F_2 = 2, F_{n+1} = F_n + F_{n-1}$. Motivated by this result, Baird, Epstein, Flint, and Miller defined the two-player Zeckendorf game, where two players take turns acting on a multiset of Fibonacci numbers that always sums to $N$. The game terminates when no possible moves remain, and the final player to perform a move wins. Notably, studied the setting of random games: the game proceeds by choosing an available move uniformly at random, and they conjecture that as the input $N \to \infty$, the distribution of random game lengths converges to a Gaussian. We prove that certain sums of move counts is constant, and find a lower bound on the number of shortest games on input $N$ involving the Catalan numbers. The works Baird et al. and Cuzensa et al. determined how to achieve a shortest and longest possible Zeckendorf game on a given input $N$, respectively: we establish that for any input $N$, the range of possible game lengths constitutes an interval of natural numbers: every game length between the shortest and longest game lengths can be achieved. We further the study of probabilistic aspects of random Zeckendorf games. We study two probability measures on the space of all Zeckendorf games on input $N$: the uniform measure, and the measure induced by choosing moves uniformly at random at any given position. Under both measures that in the limit $N \to \infty$, both players win with probability $1/2$. We also find natural partitions of the collection of all Zeckendorf games of a fixed input $N$, on which we observe weak convergence to a Gaussian in the limit $N \to \infty$. We conclude the work with many open problems.

q,t-Catalan measures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the $q,t$-Catalan measures, a sequence of piece-wise polynomial measures on $\mathbb{R}^2$. These measures are defined in terms of suitable area, dinv, and bounce statistics on continuous families of paths in the plane, and have many combinatorial similarities to the $q,t$-Catalan numbers. Our main result realizes the $q,t$-Catalan measures as a limit of higher $q,t$-Catalan numbers $C^{(m)}_n(q,t)$ as $m\to\infty$. We also give a geometric interpretation of the $q,t$-Catalan measures. They are the Duistermaat-Heckman measures of the punctual Hilbert schemes parametrizing subschemes of $\mathbb{C}^2$ supported at the origin.

Intersection numbers on fibrations and Catalan numbers
On an elliptic surface or threefold, Catalan numbers appear when one tries to compute the autoequivalence group action on the Bridgeland stability manifold. We explain why this happens by identifying a class of equations in the Chow ring of a fibration, where the solutions always involve Catalan numbers.

Dyck Numbers, I. Successor Function
Dyck paths are among the most heavily studied Catalan families. In the paper we are dealing with the minimal numbering of Dyck paths, with the resulting numbers, the terms of the OEIS sequence A036991, which we have called Dyck numbers. We consider the successor function on the Dyck numbers, closed formulas are obtained. In particular, the formula for the successor of the Mersenne number is calculated (since OEIS A000225 is a subset of A036991). We have obtained the corresponding algorithm of the Dyck successor function, DS-function, and a Python program has been compiled. At the end of the paper, the size of the A036991 ranges is associated with the terms of OEIS A001405. The corresponding hypothesis is formulated.

Optimizing for the Rupert property
Published • View PublicationBIB
A polyhedron is Rupert if it is possible to cut a hole in it and thread an identical polyhedron through the hole. It is known that all 5 Platonic solids, 10 of the 13 Archimedean solids, 9 of the 13 Catalan solids, and 82 of the 92 Johnson solids are Rupert. Here, a nonlinear optimization method is devised that is able to validate the previously known results in seconds. It is also used to show that 2 additional Catalan solids -- the triakis tetrahedron and the pentagonal icositetrahedron -- and 5 additional Johnson solids are Rupert.

On Clusters and Exceptional Sets in Types $\mathbb{A}$ and $\tilde{\mathbb{A}}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we first study clusters in type $\tilde{\mathbb{A}}$ by collecting them into a finite number of infinite families given by Dehn twists of their corresponding triangulations, and show that these families are counted by the Catalan numbers. We also highlight the similarities and differences between the annuli diagrams used to study clusters and those used to study exceptional sets in type $\tilde{\mathbb{A}}$. We then focus on exceptional collections (sets) of modules over path algebras of quivers by first showing that the notion of relative projectivity in exceptional sets is well defined. We finish by counting the number of exceptional sets of representations of type $\mathbb{A}$ quivers with straight orientation and using this to count the number of families of exceptional sets of type $\tilde{\mathbb{A}}$ with straight orientation.

Integer Sequences and Output Arrays
The first author recently introduced an integer sequence now numbered A355519 in OEIS. This sequence arose from counting bracket tournaments; its study evokes the analysis of the Catalan triangle (sequence A009766 in OEIS) and the related Catalan numbers, sequence A000108 in OEIS. We therefore introduce a general construction that places these sequences on the same footing and suggests many new integer sequences. We provide code for performing this construction and a lengthy list of examples. This construction determines a function from input sequences to output sequences. Some of the resulting output sequences are in OEIS and others are not.

A conjectured formula for the rational $q,t$-Catalan polynomial
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 28, 749-795 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We conjecture a formula for the rational $q,t$-Catalan polynomial $\mathcal{C}_{r/s}$ that is symmetric in $q$ and $t$ by definition. The conjecture posits that $\mathcal{C}_{r/s}$ can be written in terms of symmetric monomial strings indexed by maximal Dyck paths. We show that for any finite $d^*$, giving a combinatorial proof of our conjecture on the infinite set of functions $\{ \mathcal{C}_{r/s}^d: r\equiv 1 \mod s, \,\,\, d \leq d^*\}$ is equivalent to a finite counting problem.
Rational Noncrossing Coxeter-Catalan Combinatorics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We solve two open problems in Coxeter-Catalan combinatorics. First, we introduce a family of rational noncrossing objects for any finite Coxeter group, using the combinatorics of distinguished subwords. Second, we give a type-uniform proof that these noncrossing Catalan objects are counted by the rational Coxeter-Catalan number, using the character theory of the associated Hecke algebra and the properties of Lusztig's exotic Fourier transform. We solve the same problems for rational noncrossing parking objects.
Catalan numbers, parking functions, permutahedra and noncommutative Hilbert schemes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We find an explicit $S_n$-equivariant bijection between the integral points in a certain zonotope in $\mathbb{R}^n$, combinatorially equivalent to the permutahedron, and the set of $m$-parking functions of length $n$. This bijection restricts to a bijection between the regular $S_n$-orbits and $(m,n)$-Dyck paths, the number of which is given by the Fuss-Catalan number $A_{n}(m,1)$. Our motivation came from studying tilting bundles on noncommutative Hilbert schemes. As a side result we use these tilting bundles to construct a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived category of noncommutative Hilbert schemes.
On $k$-Mersenne and k-Mersenne-Lucas Octonions
This paper aims to introduce the $k$-Mersenne and $k$-Mersenne-Lucas octonions. We give the closed form formulae for these octonions and obtain some well-known identities like Cassini's identity, d'Ocagne's identity, Catalan identity, Vajda's identity and generating functions of them. As a consequence k=1 yields all the above properties for Mersenne and Mersenne-Lucas octonions.

Statistics of Partial Permutations via Catalan matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
A generalized Catalan matrix $(a_{n,k})_{n,k\ge 0}$ is generated by two seed sequences $\mathbf{s}=(s_0,s_1,\ldots)$ and $\mathbf{t}=(t_1,t_2,\ldots)$ together with a recurrence relation. By taking $s_\ell=2\ell+1$ and $t_\ell=\ell^2$ we can interpret $a_{n,k}$ as the number of partial permutations, which are $n\times n$ $0,1$-matrices of $k$ zero rows with at most one $1$ in each row or column. In this paper we prove that most of fundamental statistics and some set-valued statistics on permutations can also be defined on partial permutations and be encoded in the seed sequences. Results on two interesting permutation families, namely the connected permutations and cycle-up-down permutations, are also given.

Knight's paths towards Catalan numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide enumerating results for partial knight's paths of a given size. We prove algebraically that zigzag knight's paths of a given size ending on the $x$-axis are enumerated by the generalized Catalan numbers, and we give a constructive bijection with peakless Motzkin paths of a given length. After enumerating partial knight's paths of a given length, we prove that zigzag knight's paths of a given length ending on the $x$-axis are counted by the Catalan numbers. Finally, we give a constructive bijection with Dyck paths of a given length.
