Some consequences of the valley Delta conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
In (Haglund, Remmel, Wilson 2018) Haglund, Remmel and Wilson introduced their Delta conjectures, which give two different combinatorial interpretations of the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{n-k-1}} e_n$ in terms of rise-decorated or valley-decorated labelled Dyck paths respectively. While the rise version has been recently proved (D'Adderio, Mellit 2021; Blasiak, Haiman, Morse, Pun, Seelinger preprint 2021), not much is known about the valley version. In this work we prove the Schröder case of the valley Delta conjecture, the Schröder case of its square version (Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2021), and the Catalan case of its extended version (Qiu, Wilson 2020). Furthermore, assuming the symmetry of (a refinement of) the combinatorial side of the extended valley Delta conjecture, we deduce also the Catalan case of its square version (Iraci, Vanden Wyngaerd 2021).

Factors of Alternating Convolution of the Gessel Numbers
The Gessel number $P(n,r)$ is the number of the paths in plane with $(1, 0)$ and $(0,1)$ steps from $(0,0)$ to $(n+r, n+r-1)$ that never touch any of the points from the set $\{(x,x)\in \mathbb{Z}^2: x\geq r\}$. We show that there is a close relationship between the Gessel numbers $P(n,r)$ and the super Catalan numbers $S(n,r)$. By using new sums, we prove that an alternating convolution of the Gessel numbers $P(n,r)$ is always divisible by \frac{1}{2}$S(n,r)$.

Raised $k$-Dyck paths
Raised $k$-Dyck paths are a generalization of $k$-Dyck paths that may both begin and end at a nonzero height. In this paper, we develop closed formulas for the number of raised $k$-Dyck paths from $(0,α)$ to $(\ell,β)$ for all height pairs $α,β\geq 0$, all lengths $\ell \geq 0$, and all $k \geq 2$. We then enumerate raised $k$-Dyck paths with a fixed number of returns to ground, a fixed minimum height, and a fixed maximum height, presenting generating functions (in terms of the generating functions $C_k(t)$ for the $k$-Catalan numbers) when closed formulas aren't tractable. Specializing our results to $k=2$ or to $α< k$ reveal connections with preexisting results concerning height-bounded Dyck paths and "Dyck paths with a negative boundary", respectively.

A new statistic on Dyck paths for counting 3-dimensional Catalan words
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 3-dimensional Catalan word is a word on three letters so that the subword on any two letters is a Dyck path. For a given Dyck path $D$, a recently defined statistic counts the number of Catalan words with the property that any subword on two letters is exactly $D$. In this paper, we enumerate Dyck paths with this statistic equal to certain values, including all primes. The formulas obtained are in terms of Motzkin numbers and Motzkin ballot numbers.

Random meander model for links
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry, published online June 2024, 20 p • View PublicationBIB
We suggest a new random model for links based on meander diagrams and graphs. We then prove that trivial links appear with vanishing probability in this model, no link $L$ is obtained with probability 1, and there is a lower bound for the number of non-isotopic knots obtained for a fixed number of crossings. A random meander diagram is obtained through matching pairs of parentheses, a well-studied problem in combinatorics. Hence tools from combinatorics can be used to investigate properties of random links in this model, and, moreover, of the respective 3-manifolds that are link complements in 3-sphere. We use this for exploring geometric properties of a link complement. Specifically, we give expected twist number of a link diagram and use it to bound expected hyperbolic and simplicial volume of random links. The tools from combinatorics that we use include Catalan and Narayana numbers, and Zeilberger's algorithm.

Connecting Scalar Amplitudes using The Positive Tropical Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
The biadjoint scalar partial amplitude, $m_n(\mathbb{I},\mathbb{I})$, can be expressed as a single integral over the positive tropical Grassmannian thus producing a Global Schwinger Parameterization. The first result in this work is an extension to all partial amplitudes $m_n(α,β)$ using a limiting procedure on kinematic invariants that produces indicator functions in the integrand. The same limiting procedure leads to an integral representation of $φ^4$ amplitudes where indicator functions turn into Dirac delta functions. Their support decomposes into $\textrm{C}_{n/2-1}$ regions, with $\textrm{C}_q$ the $q^{\rm th}$-Catalan number. The contribution from each region is identified with a $m_{n/2+1}(α,\mathbb{I})$ amplitude. We provide a combinatorial description of the regions in terms of non-crossing chord diagrams and propose a general formula for $φ^4$ amplitudes using the Lagrange inversion construction. We start the exploration of $φ^p$ theories, finding that their regions are encoded in non-crossing $(p-2)$-chord diagrams. The structure of the expansion of $φ^p$ amplitudes in terms of $φ^3$ amplitudes is the same as that of Green functions in terms of connected Green functions in the planar limit of $Φ^{p-1}$ matrix models. We also discuss possible connections to recent constructions based on Stokes polytopes and accordiohedra.

Refined enumeration of $k$-plane trees and $k$-noncrossing trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-plane tree is a plane tree whose vertices are assigned labels between $1$ and $k$ in such a way that the sum of the labels along any edge is no greater than $k+1$. These trees are known to be related to $(k+1)$-ary trees, and they are counted by a generalised version of the Catalan numbers. We prove a surprisingly simple refined counting formula, where we count trees with a prescribed number of labels of each kind. Several corollaries are derived from this formula, and an analogous theorem is proven for $k$-noncrossing trees, a similarly defined family of labelled noncrossing trees that are related to $(2k+1)$-ary trees.

Feynman Checkers with Absorption
We give a new elementary proof of the theorem by Ambainis et al. that for a quantum walk, the probability amplitudes of absorption at the initial point after 4n steps are proportional to the Catalan numbers. We also calculate the absorption probabilities at points close to the initial one for the first time.

Fibonacci-Catalan Series
We study certain series with Catalan numbers and reciprocal Catalan numbers, respectively, and provide seemingly new closed form evaluations of these series with Fibonacci (Lucas) entries. In addition, we state some combinatorial sums that can be inferred from the series.
Refinements of the braid arrangement and two parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, volume 57, pages 687 - 707 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
A hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a finite collection of affine hyperplanes. Counting regions of hyperplane arrangements is an active research direction in enumerative combinatorics. In this paper, we consider the arrangement $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ given by $\{x_i=0 \mid i \in [n]\} \cup \{x_i=a^kx_j \mid k \in [-m,m], 1\leq i<j \leq n\}$ for some fixed $a>1$. It turns out that this family of arrangements is closely related to the well-studied extended Catalan arrangement of type $A$. We prove that the number of regions of $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ is a certain generalization of Catalan numbers called two parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers. We then exhibit a bijection between these regions and certain decorated Dyck paths. We also compute the characteristic polynomial and give a combinatorial interpretation for its coefficients. Most of our results also generalize to sub-arrangements of $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ by relating them to deformations of the braid arrangement.

Product-Coproduct Prographs and Triangulations of the Sphere
In this paper, we explain how the classical Catalan families of objects involving paths, tableaux, triangulations, parentheses configurations and more generalize canonically to a three-dimensional version. In particular, we present product-coproduct prographs as central objects explaining the combinatorics of the triangulations of the sphere. Then we expose a natural way to extend the Tamari lattice to the product-coproduct prographs.

Splitting Kronecker squares, 2-decomposition numbers, Catalan Combinatorics, and the Saxl conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
While there has been some progress on the decomposition of Kronecker products of characters of the symmetric groups in recent times, results on the symmetric and alternating part of Kronecker squares are still scarce. Here, new results (and conjectures) are presented on this splitting of the squares that contribute to a refined understanding of the Kronecker squares. Furthermore, connections to 2-modular decomposition numbers, Catalan combinatorics, and to the Saxl conjecture are discussed which further motivate the study of these splittings.

Bogoyavlensky lattices and generalized Catalan numbers
Published in Russian J. Math. Phys. 31, 1-23 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of the decay of initial data in the form of a unit step for the Bogoyavlensky lattices. In contrast to the Gurevich--Pitaevskii problem of the decay of initial discontinuity for the KdV equation, it turns out to be exactly solvable, since the dynamics is linearizable due to termination on the half-line. The answer is written in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions, which serve as exponential generating functions for generalized Catalan numbers. This can be proved by the fact that the generalized Hankel determinants for these numbers are equal to 1, which is a well-known result in combinatorics. Another method is based on a non-autonomous symmetry reduction consistent with the dynamics. It reduces the lattice equation to a finite-dimensional system and makes it possible to solve the problem for a more general finite-parameter family of initial data.

Hypergraph Fuss-Catalan Numbers
The Catalan numbers $C_n$ are an extremely well-studied sequence of numbers that appear as the answer to many combinatorial problems. Two generalizations of these numbers that have been studied are the Fuss-Catalan numbers and the Hypergraph Catalan numbers. In this paper, we study the combination of these, the Hypergraph Fuss-Catalan numbers. We provide some combinatorial interpretations of these numbers, as well as describe their generating function.
Pattern-avoidance and Fuss-Catalan numbers
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences, Vol. 26 (2023), Article 23.4.2 • Search Publication
We study a subset of permutations, where entries are restricted to having the same remainder as the index, modulo some integer $k \geq 2$. We show that when also imposing the classical 132- or 213-avoidance restriction on the permutations, we recover the Fuss--Catalan numbers and some special cases of the Raney numbers. Surprisingly, an analogous statement also holds when we impose the mod $k$ restriction on a Catalan family of subexcedant functions. Finally, we completely enumerate all combinations of mod-$k$-alternating permutations, avoiding two patterns of length 3. This is analogous to the systematic study by Simion and Schmidt, of permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3.

Cassini, d'Ocagne, and Vajda identities for n-step Fibonacci numbers
Results of this paper concern $n$-determinants which we defined in the paper \cite{jan}. In the paper \cite{jabo}, $2$-determinants are considered. In this paper, we extend results from \cite{jabo} on $n$-determinants by proving that Cassini, d'Ocagne, Catalan and Vajda identities may be extended to hold for $n$-step Fibonacci numbers.

{T}he Gröbner Basis of a Catalan Path Ideal
Published • View PublicationBIB
For the ideal $I = \langle y_1 + \dots + y_n, y^2_1, \dots , y^2_n \rangle$ in $R = {\mathbb F}[y_1, \dots , y_n]$ with char($\mathbb F$) = 0, we show that the reduced Gröbner basis with lex-order consists of polynomials $g_α$ that are represented in terms of paths, moving northeast in the Cartesian plane, that stay above the diagonal and cross the diagonal at the last step. This implies that a linear basis for the quotient ring $R/I$ is given by a set of Catalan paths. We show that the dimension is the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ and height at most two. The graded Frobenius characteristic of $R/I$ as a symmetric group module is given by $\sum_{k=0}^{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor } s_{n-k,k}q^k$.

We study a certain family of infinite series with reciprocal Catalan numbers. We first evaluate two special candidates of the family in closed form, where we also present some Catalan-Fibonacci relations. Then we focus on the general properties of the family and prove explicit formulas, including two types of integral representations.

The threshold for stacked triangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A \emph{stacked triangulation} of a $d$-simplex $\mathbf{o}=\{1,\ldots,d+1\}$ ($d\geq 2$) is a triangulation obtained by repeatedly subdividing a $d$-simplex into $d+1$ new ones via a new vertex (the case $d=2$ is known as an Appolonian network). We study the occurrence of such a triangulation in the Linial--Meshulam model, i.e., for which $p$ does the random simplicial complex $Y\sim \mathcal{Y}_d(n,p)$ contain the faces of a stacked triangulation of the $d$-simplex $\mathbf{o}$, with its internal vertices labeled in $[n]$. In the language of bootstrap percolation in hypergraphs, it pertains to the threshold for $K_{d+2}^{d+1}$, the $(d+1)$-uniform clique on $d+2$ vertices. Our main result identifies this threshold for every $d\geq 2$, showing it is asymptotically $(α_d n)^{-1/d}$, where $α_d$ is the growth rate of the Fuss--Catalan numbers of order $d$. The proof hinges on a second moment argument in the supercritical regime, and on Kalai's algebraic shifting in the subcritical regime.

Symmetric Functions and Rectangular Catalan Combinatorics
Symmetric functions provide one of the most efficient tools for combinatorial enumeration, in the context of objects that may be acted upon by permutations. Only assuming a basic knowledge of linear algebra, we introduce and describe the classical toolbox of symmetric functions, and give many examples of their uses. In particular, we present how classical formulas of enumerative combinatorics afford a natural generalization in terms of symmetric functions. We then rapidly present Macdonald symmetric functions and associated operators, to go on with the description of their relations to rectangular Catalan combinatorics. We also discuss the link with a realization of the elliptic Hall algebra, as an algebra of operators on symmetric functions.
