The cd-index of Bruhat intervals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study flag enumeration in intervals in the Bruhat order on a Coxeter group by means of a structural recursion on intervals in the Bruhat order. The recursion gives the isomorphism type of a Bruhat interval in terms of smaller intervals, using basic geometric operations which preserve PL sphericity and have a simple effect on the cd-index. This leads to a new proof that Bruhat intervals are PL spheres as well a recursive formula for the cd-index of a Bruhat interval. This recursive formula is used to prove that the cd-indices of Bruhat intervals span the space of cd-polynomials. The structural recursion leads to a conjecture that Bruhat spheres are "smaller" than polytopes. More precisely, we conjecture that if one fixes the lengths of x and y, then the cd-index of a certain dual stacked polytope is a coefficientwise upper bound on the cd-indices of Bruhat intervals [x,y]. We show that this upper bound would be tight by constructing Bruhat intervals which are the face lattices of these dual stacked polytopes. As a weakening of a special case of the conjecture, we show that the flag h-vectors of lower Bruhat intervals are bounded above by the flag h-vectors of Boolean algebras (i.e. simplices).

Noncommutative algebras related with Schubert calculus on Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any finite Coxeter system $(W,S)$ we construct a certain noncommutative algebra, so-called {\it bracket algebra}, together with a familiy of commuting elements, so-called {\it Dunkl elements.} Dunkl elements conjecturally generate an algebra which is canonically isomorphic to the coinvariant algebra of the group $W.$ We prove this conjecture for classical Coxeter groups and $I_2(m)$. We define a ``quantization'' and a multiparameter deformation of our construction and show that for Lie groups of classical type and $G_2,$ the algebra generated by Dunkl elements in the quantized bracket algebra is canonically isomorphic to the small quantum cohomology ring of the corresponding flag variety, as described by B. Kim. For crystallographic Coxeter systems we define {\it quantum Bruhat representation} of the corresponding bracket algebra. We study in more detail relations and structure of $B_n$-, $D_n$- and $G_2$-bracket algebras, and as an application, discover {\it Pieri type formula} in the $B_n$-bracket algebra. As a corollary, we obtain Pieri type formula for multiplication of arbitrary $B_n$-Schubert classes by some special ones. Our Pieri type formula is a generalization of Pieri's formulas obtained by A. Lascoux and M.-P. Schützenberger for flag varieties of type $A.$ We also introduce a super-version of the bracket algebra together with a family of pairwise anticommutative elements which describes ``noncommutative differential geometry on a finite Coxeter group'' in a sense of S. Majid.

Subword complexes in Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let (Π,Σ) be a Coxeter system. An ordered list of elements in Σand an element in Πdetermine a {\em subword complex}, as introduced in our paper on Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials (math.AG/0110058). Subword complexes are demonstrated here to be homeomorphic to balls or spheres, and their Hilbert series are shown to reflect combinatorial properties of reduced expressions in Coxeter groups. Two formulae for double Grothendieck polynomials, one of which is due to Fomin and Kirillov, are recovered in the context of simplicial topology for subword complexes. Some open questions related to subword complexes are presented.

The Order Dimension of the Poset of Regions in a Hyperplane Arrangement
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the order dimension of the weak order on a Coxeter group of type A, B or D is equal to the rank of the Coxeter group, and give bounds on the order dimensions for the other finite types. This result arises from a unified approach which, in particular, leads to a simpler treatment of the previously known cases, types A and B. The result for weak orders follows from an upper bound on the dimension of the poset of regions of an arbitrary hyperplane arrangement. In some cases, including the weak orders, the upper bound is the chromatic number of a certain graph. For the weak orders, this graph has the positive roots as its vertex set, and the edges are related to the pairwise inner products of the roots.

On rank functions for heaps
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by work of Stembridge, we study rank functions for Viennot's heaps of pieces. We produce a simple and sufficient criterion for a heap to be a ranked poset and apply the results to the heaps arising from fully commutative words in Coxeter groups.

Freely braided elements in Coxeter groups
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 6 (2002), 337-348 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a notion of "freely braided element" for simply laced Coxeter groups. We show that an arbitrary group element $w$ has at most $2^{N(w)}$ commutation classes of reduced expressions, where $N(w)$ is a certain statistic defined in terms of the positive roots made negative by $w$. This bound is achieved if $w$ is freely braided. In the type $A$ setting, we show that the bound is achieved only for freely braided $w$.

Computation in Coxeter groups II. Minimal roots
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the recent paper (Casselman, 2001) I described how a number of ideas due to Fokko du Cloux and myself could be incorporated into a reasonably efficient program to carry out multiplication in arbitrary Coxeter groups. At the end of that paper I discussed how this algorithm could be used to build the reflection table of minimal roots, which could in turn form the basis of a much more efficient multiplication algorithm. In this paper, following a suggestion of Bob Howlett, I explain how results due to Brigitte Brink can be used to construct the minimal root reflection table directly and more efficiently.

Colimits, Stanley-Reisner algebras, and loop spaces
Published in Categorical decomposition techniques in algebraic topology (Isle of Skye, 2001). Progress in Math. 215. Birkhäuser, Basel, 2004, pp. 261-291 • View PublicationBIB
We study diagrams associated with a finite simplicial complex K, in various algebraic and topological categories. We relate their colimits to familiar structures in algebra, combinatorics, geometry and topology. These include: right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups (and their complex analogues, which we call circulation groups); Stanley-Reisner algebras and coalgebras; Davis and Januszkiewicz's spaces DJ(K) associated with toric manifolds and their generalisations; and coordinate subspace arrangements. When K is a flag complex, we extend well-known results on Artin and Coxeter groups by confirming that the relevant circulation group is homotopy equivalent to the space of loops $ΩDJ(K)$. We define homotopy colimits for diagrams of topological monoids and topological groups, and show they commute with the formation of classifying spaces in a suitably generalised sense. We deduce that the homotopy colimit of the appropriate diagram of topological groups is a model for $ΩDJ(K)$ for an arbitrary complex K, and that the natural projection onto the original colimit is a homotopy equivalence when K is flag. In this case, the two models are compatible.

On 321-avoiding permutations in affine Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of 321-avoiding permutations in the affine Weyl group $W$ of type $A_{n-1}$ by considering the group as a George group (in the sense of Eriksson and Eriksson). This enables us to generalize a result of Billey, Jockusch and Stanley to show that the 321-avoiding permutations in $W$ coincide with the set of fully commutative elements; in other words, any two reduced expressions for a 321-avoiding element of $W$ (considered as a Coxeter group) may be obtained from each other by repeated applications of short braid relations. Using Shi's characterization of the Kazhdan--Lusztig cells in the group $W$, we use our main result to show that the fully commutative elements of $W$ form a union of Kazhdan--Lusztig cells. This phenomenon has been studied by the author and J. Losonczy for finite Coxeter groups, and is interesting partly because it allows certain structure constants for the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis of the associated Hecke algebra to be computed combinatorially. We also show how some of our results can be generalized to a larger group of permutations, the extended affine Weyl group associated to $GL_n({\Bbb C})$.

Gröbner geometry of Schubert polynomials
Published in Annals of Mathematics 161 (May 2005), 1245-1318 • View PublicationBIB
Our main theorems provide a single geometric setting in which polynomial representatives for Schubert classes in the integral cohomology ring of the flag manifold are determined uniquely, and have positive coefficients for geometric reasons. This results in a geometric explanation for the naturality of Schubert polynomials and their associated combinatorics. Given a permutation w in S_n, we consider a determinantal ideal I_w whose generators are certain minors in the generic n x n matrix (filled with independent variables). Using `multidegrees' as simple algebraic substitutes for torus-equivariant cohomology classes on vector spaces, our main theorems describe, for each ideal I_w: - variously graded multidegrees and Hilbert series in terms of ordinary and double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials; - a Gröbner basis consisting of minors in the generic n x n matrix; - the Stanley-Reisner complex of the initial ideal in terms of known combinatorial diagrams associated to permutations in S_n; and - a procedure inductive on weak Bruhat order for listing the facets of this complex, thereby generating the coefficients of Schubert polynomials by a positive recursion on combinatorial diagrams. We show that the initial ideal is Cohen-Macaulay, by identifying the Stanley-Reisner complex as a special kind of ``subword complex in S_n'', which we define generally for arbitrary Coxeter groups, and prove to be shellable by giving an explicit vertex decomposition. We also prove geometrically a general positivity statement for multidegrees of subschemes.

Shuffles on Coxeter groups
The random-to-top and the riffle shuffle are two well-studied methods for shuffling a deck of cards. These correspond to the symmetric group $S_n$, i.e., the Coxeter group of type $A_{n-1}$. In this paper, we give analogous shuffles for the Coxeter groups of type $B_n$ and $D_n$. These can be interpreted as shuffles on a ``signed'' deck of cards. With these examples as motivation, we abstract the notion of a shuffle algebra which captures the connection between the algebraic structure of the shuffles and the geometry of the Coxeter groups. We also briefly discuss the generalisation to buildings which leads to q-analogues.

Logarithmic forms and anti-invariant forms of reflection groups
Published in Advanced Studies in Pure Math., 27, Arrangements, Tokyo 1998, (ed. M. Falk, H. Terao) 2000, Kinokuniya and North-Holland, Tokyo-Amsterdam • View PublicationBIB
Let W be a finite group generated by unitary reflections and A be the set of reflecting hyperplanes. We will give a characterization of the logarithmic differential forms with poles along A in terms of anti-invariant differential forms. If W is a Coxeter group defined over the real numbers, then the characterization provides a new method to find a basis for the module of logarithmic differential forms out of basic invariants.

The Sign Representation for Shephard Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Shephard groups are unitary reflection groups arising as the symmetries of regular complex polytopes. For a Shephard group, we identify the representation carried by the principal ideal in the coinvariant algebra generated by the image of the product of all linear forms defining reflecting hyperplanes. This representation turns out to have many equivalent guises making it analogous to the sign representation of a finite Coxeter group. One of these guises is (up to a twist) the cohomology of the Milnor fiber for the isolated singularity at 0 in the hypersurface defined by any homogeneous invariant of minimal degree.

Stratified spaces formed by totally positive varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
By a theorem of A.Björner, for every interval $[u,v]$ in the Bruhat order of a Coxeter group $W$, there exists a stratified space whose strata are labeled by the elements of $[u,v]$, adjacency is described by the Bruhat order, and each closed stratum (resp., the boundary of each stratum) has the homology of a ball (resp., of a sphere). Answering a question posed by Björner, we suggest a natural geometric realization of these stratified spaces for a Weyl group $W$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$, and prove its validity in the case of the symmetric group. Our stratified spaces arise as links in the Bruhat decomposition of the totally nonnegative part of the unipotent radical of $G$.
Simply-laced Coxeter groups and groups generated by symplectic transvections
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, the number of Gamma_i(F_2)-orbits in F_2^m is equal to 3\times 2^s, where s is the number of simple reflections that appear in a reduced decomposition for u or v and F_2 is the two-element field.

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling on Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Random walk on the chambers of hyperplanes arrangements is used to define a family of card shuffling measures $H_{W,x}$ for a finite Coxeter group W and real $x \neq 0$. By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple orbits of the adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Choosing such a semisimple orbit uniformly at random thereby induces a probability measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. For types A, B, and the identity conjugacy class of W for all types, it is proved that for q very good, this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from $H_{W,q}$.

A Pieri-type formula for isotropic flag manifolds
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 354 No. 7, (2002), 2659-2705 • View PublicationBIB
We give the formula for multiplying a Schubert class on an odd orthogonal or symplectic flag manifold by a special Schubert class pulled back from a Grassmannian of maximal isotropic subspaces. This is also the formula for multiplying a type $B$ (respectively, type $C$) Schubert polynomial by the Schur $P$-polynomial $p_m$ (respectively, the Schur $Q$-polynomial $q_m$). Geometric constructions and intermediate results allow us to ultimately deduce this from formulas for the classical flag manifold. These intermediate results are concerned with the Bruhat order of the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$, identities of the structure constants for the Schubert basis of cohomology, and intersections of Schubert varieties. We show these identities follow from the Pieri-type formula, except some `hidden symmetries' of the structure constants. Our analysis leads to a new partial order on the Coxeter group ${\mathcal B}_\infty$ and formulas for many of these structure constants.

An independent set axiomatization for symplectic matroids
One of the simplest axiomatizations of a matroid is in terms of independent sets. Curiously, no such independent set axiomatization is known for Gelfand and Serganova's WP-matroids (which are ``Coxeter group analogues'' of matroids). Here we state and prove such an axiomatization in the special case of symplectic matroids. No prior knowledge of WP-matroids is assumed; we believe the paper should be accessible and interesting to anyone with some interest in matroids.

A Generalization of an Alternating Sum Formula for Finite Coxeter Groups
For W a finite Coxeter group, a formula is found for the size of W equivalence classes of subsets of a base. The proof is a case-by-case analysis using results and tables of Carter and Orlik/Solomon. As a corollary we obtain an alternating sum identity which generalizes a well-known identity from the theory of Coxeter groups.
