We introduce Coxeter-sortable elements of a Coxeter group W. For finite W, we give bijective proofs that Coxeter-sortable elements are equinumerous with clusters and with noncrossing partitions. We characterize Coxeter-sortable elements in terms of their inversion sets and, in the classical cases, in terms of permutations.
On the excedance number of colored permutation groups
We generalize the results of Ksavrelof and Zeng about the multidistribution of the excedance number of $S_n$ with some natural parameters to the colored permutation group and to the Coxeter group of type $D$. We define two different orders on these groups which induce two different excedance numbers. Surprisingly, in the case of the colored permutation group, we get the same generalized formulas for both orders.

We construct a quotient ring of the ring of diagonal coinvariants of the complex reflection group $W=G(m,p,n)$ and determine its graded character. This generalises a result of Gordon for Coxeter groups. The proof uses a study of category $\cO$ for the rational Cherednik algebra of $W$.

We introduce and study a family of simplicial complexes associated to an arbitrary finite root system and a nonnegative integer parameter m. For m=1, our construction specializes to the (simplicial) generalized associahedra or, equivalently, to the cluster complexes for the cluster algebras of finite type.
Our computation of the face numbers and h-vectors of these complexes produces the enumerative invariants defined in other contexts by C.A.Athanasiadis, suggesting links to a host of well studied problems in algebraic combinatorics of finite Coxeter groups, root systems, and hyperplane arrangements.
Recurrences satisfied by the face numbers of our complexes lead to combinatorial algorithms for determining Coxeter-theoretic invariants. That is, starting with a Coxeter diagram of a finite Coxeter group, one can compute the Coxeter number, the exponents, and other classical invariants by a recursive procedure that only uses most basic graph-theoretic concepts applied to the input diagram.
In types A and B, we rediscover the constructions and results obtained by E.Tzanaki <math.CO/0501100>.
Generalized descent algebras
If $A$ is a subset of the set of reflections of a finite Coxeter group $W$, we define a sub-${\mathbb{Z}}$-module ${\mathcal{D}}_A(W)$ of the group algebra ${\mathbb{Z}} W$. We provide examples where this submodule is a subalgebra. This family of subalgebras includes strictly the Solomon descent algebra and, if $W$ if of type $B$, the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra.

An axiomatic approach to the representation theory of Coxeter groups and their Hecke algebras was presented in [1]. Combinatorial aspects of this construction are studied in this paper. In particular, the symmetric group case is investigated in detail. The resulting representations are completely classified and include the irreducible ones.
Permutation statistics on involutions

In this paper we look at polynomials arising from statistics on the classes of involutions, $I_n$, and involutions with no fixed points, $J_n$, in the symmetric group. Our results are motivated by F. Brenti's conjecture which states that the Eulerian distribution of $I_n$ is log-concave. Symmetry of the generating functions is shown for the statistics $des, maj$ and the joint distribution $(des, maj)$. We show that $exc$ is log-concave on $I_n$, $inv$ is log-concave on $J_n$ and $des$ is partially unimodal on both $I_n$ and $J_n$. We also give recurrences and explicit forms for the generating functions of the inversions statistic on involutions in Coxeter groups of types $B_n$ and $D_n$. Symmetry and unimodality of $inv$ is shown on the subclass of signed permutations in $D_n$ with no fixed points. In light of these new results, we present further conjectures at the end of the paper.
The combinatorics of twisted involutions in Coxeter groups

The open intervals in the Bruhat order on twisted involutions in a Coxeter group are shown to be PL spheres. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti and sharpens the known fact that these posets are Gorenstein* over Z_2.
We also introduce a Boolean cell complex which is an analogue for twisted involutions of the Coxeter complex. Several classical Coxeter complex properties are shared by our complex. When the group is finite, it is a shellable sphere, shelling orders being given by the linear extensions of the weak order on twisted involutions. Furthermore, the h-polynomial of the complex coincides with the polynomial counting twisted involutions by descents. In particular, this gives a type independent proof that the latter is symmetric.
Hypercube embedding of Wythoffians

The Wythoff construction takes a $d$-dimensional polytope $P$, a subset $S$ of $\{0,..., d\}$ and returns another $d$-dimensional polytope $P(S)$. If $P$ is a regular polytope, then $P(S)$ is vertex-transitive. This construction builds a large part of the Archimedean polytopes and tilings in dimension 3 and 4.
We want to determine, which of those Wythoffians $P(S)$ with regular $P$ have their skeleton or dual skeleton isometrically embeddable into the hypercubes $H_m$ and half-cubes ${1/2}H_m$. We find six infinite series, which, we conjecture, cover all cases for dimension $d>5$ and some sporadic cases in dimension 3 and 4 (see Tables \ref{WythoffEmbeddable3} and \ref{WythoffEmbeddable4}).
Three out of those six infinite series are explained by a general result about the embedding of Wythoff construction for Coxeter groups. In the last section, we consider the Euclidean case; also, zonotopality of embeddable $P(S)$ are addressed throughout the text.

Louis Solomon showed that the group algebra of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ has a subalgebra called the descent algebra, generated by sums of permutations with a given descent set. In fact, he showed that every Coxeter group has something that can be called a descent algebra. There is also a commutative, semisimple subalgebra of Solomon's descent algebra generated by sums of permutations with the same number of descents: an "Eulerian" descent algebra. For any Coxeter group that is also a Weyl group, Paola Cellini proved the existence of a different Eulerian subalgebra based on a modified definition of descent. We derive the existence of Cellini's subalgebra for the case of the symmetric group and of the hyperoctahedral group using a variation on Richard Stanley's theory of $P$-partitions.

We extend the weak Bruhat order of a finite Coxeter group to the set of its coclasses, modulo parabolic standard subgroups. We use this order to describe associative algebra structures on the vector spaces spanned by the faces of permutahedra on one side, and on the vector space spanned by the planar rooted trees, on the other one.

Applying a classical theorem of Smith, we show that the poset property of being Gorenstein$^*$ over $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is inherited by the subposet of fixed points under an involutive poset automorphism. As an application, we prove that every interval in the Bruhat order on (twisted) involutions in an arbitrary Coxeter group has this property, and we find the rank function. This implies results conjectured by F. Incitti. We also show that the Bruhat order on the fixed points of an involutive automorphism induced by a Coxeter graph automorphism is isomorphic to the Bruhat order on the fixed subgroup viewed as a Coxeter group in its own right.

For an arbitrary finite Coxeter group W we define the family of Cambrian lattices for W as quotients of the weak order on W with respect to certain lattice congruences. We associate to each Cambrian lattice a complete fan, which we conjecture is the normal fan of a polytope combinatorially isomorphic to the generalized associahedron for W. In types A and B we obtain, by means of a fiber-polytope construction, combinatorial realizations of the Cambrian lattices in terms of triangulations and in terms of permutations. Using this combinatorial information, we prove in types A and B that the Cambrian fans are combinatorially isomorphic to the normal fans of the generalized associahedra and that one of the Cambrian fans is linearly isomorphic to Fomin and Zelevinsky's construction of the normal fan as a "cluster fan." Our construction does not require a crystallographic Coxeter group and therefore suggests a definition, at least on the level of cellular spheres, of a generalized associahedron for any finite Coxeter group. The Tamari lattice is one of the Cambrian lattices of type A, and two "Tamari" lattices in type B are identified and characterized in terms of signed pattern avoidance. We also show that open intervals in Cambrian lattices are either contractible or homotopy equivalent to spheres.

We give a unified explanation of the geometric and algebraic properties of two well-known maps, one from permutations to triangulations, and another from permutations to subsets. Furthermore we give a broad generalization of the maps. Specifically, for any lattice congruence of the weak order on a Coxeter group we construct a complete fan of convex cones with strong properties relative to the corresponding lattice quotient of the weak order. We show that if a family of lattice congruences on the symmetric groups satisfies certain compatibility conditions then the family defines a sub Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. Such a sub Hopf algebra has a basis which is described by a type of pattern-avoidance. Applying these results, we build the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra as the limit of an infinite sequence of smaller algebras, where the second algebra in the sequence is the Hopf algebra of non-commutative symmetric functions. We also associate both a fan and a Hopf algebra to a set of permutations which appears to be equinumerous with the Baxter permutations.

We give a combinatorial description of closed curves on oriented surfaces in terms of certain permutations, called charts. We describe automorphisms of curves in terms of charts and compute the total number of curves counted with appropriate weights. We also discuss relations between curves, Grothendieck dessins d'enfants, Riemann surfaces, Coxeter groups, and words.

We study the congruence lattice of the poset of regions of a hyperplane arrangement, with particular emphasis on the weak order on a finite Coxeter group. Our starting point is a theorem from a previous paper which gives a geometric description of the poset of join-irreducibles of the congruence lattice of the poset of regions in terms of certain polyhedral decompositions of the hyperplanes. For a finite Coxeter system (W,S) and a subset K of S, let η_K:w \mapsto w_K be the projection onto the parabolic subgroup W_K. We show that the fibers of η_K constitute the smallest lattice congruence with 1\equiv s for every s\in(S-K). We give an algorithm for determining the congruence lattice of the weak order for any finite Coxeter group and for a finite Coxeter group of type A or B we define a directed graph on subsets or signed subsets such that the transitive closure of the directed graph is the poset of join-irreducibles of the congruence lattice of the weak order.
Invariance Combinatoire des Polynomes de Kazhdan-Lusztig sur les intervalles partant de l'origine
We show that for Bruhat intervals starting from the origin in simply-laced Coxeter groups the conjecture of Lusztig and Dyer holds, that is, the R-polynomials and the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials defined on [e,u] only depend on the isomorphism type of [e,u].

The purpose of the present article is to define and study a new class of descent algebras, called twisted descent algebras. These algebras are associated to the Barratt-Joyal theory of twisted bialgebras in the same way than classical descent algebras are associated to classical bialgebras. The formal properties of twisted descent algebras seem particularly meaningful in view of applications to discrete probabilities, to the geometry of Coxeter groups and buildings, and to symmetric group combinatorics.

We continue the study of freely braided elements of simply laced Coxeter groups, which we introduced in a previous work (math.CO/0301104). A known upper bound for the number of commutation classes of reduced expressions for an element of a simply laced Coxeter group is shown to be achieved only when the element is freely braided; this establishes the converse direction of a previous result. It is also shown that a simply laced Coxeter group has finitely many freely braided elements if and only if it has finitely many fully commutative elements.
