In this paper we give an alternate combinatorial description of the "$(\ell,0)$-JM partitions" (see \cite{F}) that are also $\ell$-regular. Our main theorem is the equivalence of our combinatoric and the one introduced by James and Mathas (\cite{JM}). The condition of being an $(\ell,0)$-JM partition is fundamentally related to the hook lengths of the partition. The representation-theoretic significance of their combinatoric on an $\ell$-regular partition is that it indicates the irreducibility of the corresponding specialized Specht module over the finite Hecke algebra (see \cite{JM}). We use our result to find a generating series which counts the number of such partitions, with respect to the statistic of a partition's first part. We then apply our description of these partitions to the crystal graph $B(Λ_0)$ of the basic representation of $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}_{\ell}}$, whose nodes are labeled by $\ell$-regular partitions. Here we give a fairly simple crystal-theoretic rule which generates all $\ell$-regular $(\ell,0)$-JM partitions in the graph $B(Λ_0)$. Finally, we mention how our construction can be generalized to recent results of M. Fayers (see \cite{F}) and S. Lyle (see \cite{L}) to count the total number of (not necessarily $\ell$-regular) Specht modules which stay irreducible at a primitive $\ell$th root of unity (for $\ell >2$).
Coincidences in 4 dimensions

The coincidence site lattices (CSLs) of prominent 4-dimensional lattices are considered. CSLs in 3 dimensions have been used for decades to describe grain boundaries in crystals. Quasicrystals suggest to also look at CSLs in dimensions $d>3$. Here, we discuss the CSLs of the root lattice $A_4$ and the hypercubic lattices, which are of particular interest both from the mathematical and the crystallographic viewpoint. Quaternion algebras are used to derive their coincidence rotations and the CSLs. We make use of the fact that the CSLs can be linked to certain ideals and compute their indices, their multiplicities and encapsulate all this in generating functions in terms of Dirichlet series. In addition, we sketch how these results can be generalised for 4--dimensional $\Z$--modules by discussing the icosian ring.
$B_2$-crystals: axioms, structure, models
We present a list of ``local'' axioms and an explicit combinatorial construction for the regular $B_2$-crystals (crystal graphs of highest weight integrable modules over $U_q(sp_4)$). Also a new combinatorial model for these crystals is developed.
Creation of ballot sequences in a periodic cellular automaton

Motivated by an attempt to develop a method for solving initial value problems in a class of one dimensional periodic cellular automata (CA) associated with crystal bases and soliton equations, we consider a generalization of a simple proposition in elementary mathematics. The original proposition says that any sequence of letters 1 and 2, having no less 1's than 2's, can be changed into a ballot sequence via cyclic shifts only. We generalize it to treat sequences of cells of common capacity s > 1, each of them containing consecutive 2's (left) and 1's (right), and show that these sequences can be changed into a ballot sequence via two manipulations, cyclic and "quasi-cyclic" shifts. The latter is a new CA rule and we find that various kink-like structures are traveling along the system like particles under the time evolution of this rule.
The crystal commutor and Drinfeld's unitarized R-matrix

Drinfeld defined a unitarized R-matrix for any quantum group U_q(g). This gives a commutor for the category of U_q(g) representations, making it into a coboundary category. Henriques and Kamnitzer defined another commutor which also gives U_q(g) representations the structure of a coboundary category. We show that a particular case of Henriques and Kamnitzer's construction agrees with Drinfeld's commutor. We then describe the action of Drinfeld's commutor on a tensor product of two crystal bases, and explain the relation to the crystal commutor.

We provide the explicit combinatorial structure of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals B^{r,s} of type D_n(1), B_n(1), and A_{2n-1}(2). This is achieved by constructing the crystal analogue sigma of the automorphism of the D_n(1) (resp. B_n(1) or A_{2n-1}(2)) Dynkin diagram that interchanges the 0 and 1 node. The involution sigma is defined in terms of new plus-minus diagrams that govern the D_n to D_{n-1} (resp. B_n to B_{n-1}, or C_n to C_{n-1}) branching. It is also shown that the crystal B^{r,s} is perfect. These crystals have been implemented in MuPAD-Combinat; the implementation is discussed in terms of many examples.

We define three combinatorial models for \hat{sl(n)} crystals, parametrized by partitions, configurations of beads on an `abacus', and cylindric plane partitions, respectively. These are reducible, but we can identify an irreducible subcrystal corresponding to any dominant integral highest weight. Cylindric plane partitions actually parametrize a basis for the tensor product of an irreducible representation with the space spanned by all partitions. We use this to calculate the partition function for a system of random cylindric plane partitions. We also observe a form of rank level duality. Finally, we use an explicit bijection to relate our work to the Kyoto path model.
On the structure of regular $B_2$-type crystals
For simply-laced Kac-Moody algebras $\frak g$, Stembridge (2003) proposed a `local' axiomatization of crystal graphs of representations of $U_q(\frak g)$. In this paper we propose axioms for edge-2-colored graphs which characterize the crystals of integrable representations of $U_q(sp(4))$, regular crystal graphs of $B_2$-type. An edge-colored directed graph which obeys our Axioms (K0)--(K5) is called an R-{\em graph} (for brevity), and our main result is that the regular crystals of $B_2$-type are R-graphs and vice versa. We give a direct combinatorial construction for the crystals in question. On this way we introduce a new, so-called {\em crossing model}, which does not exploit Young tableaux. This combinatorial model consists of a two-component graph of a rather simple form and of a certain set of integer-valued functions on its vertices.
Matchings and entropies of cylinders
The enumeration of perfect matchings of graphs is equivalent to the dimer problem which has applications in statistical physics. A graph $G$ is said to be $n$-rotation symmetric if the cyclic group of order $n$ is a subgroup of the automorphism group of $G$. Jockusch (Perfect matchings and perfect squares, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 67(1994), 100-115) and Kuperberg (An exploration of the permanent-determinant method, Electron. J. Combin., 5(1998), #46) proved independently that if $G$ is a plane bipartite graph of order $N$ with $2n$-rotation symmetry, then the number of perfect matchings of $G$ can be expressed as the product of $n$ determinants of order $N/2n$. In this paper we give this result a new presentation. We use this result to compute the entropy of a bulk plane bipartite lattice with $2n$-notation symmetry. We obtain explicit expressions for the numbers of perfect matchings and entropies for two types of cylinders. Using the results on the entropy of the torus obtained by Kenyon, Okounkov, and Sheffield (Dimers and amoebae, Ann. Math. 163(2006), 1019--1056) and by Salinas and Nagle (Theory of the phase transition in the layered hydrogen-bonded $SnCl^2\cdot 2H_2O$ crystal, Phys. Rev. B, 9(1974), 4920--4931), we show that each of the cylinders considered and its corresponding torus have the same entropy. Finally, we pose some problems.

Henriques and Kamnitzer defined and studied a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite dimentional complex reductive Lie algebra. We show that the action of this commutor on highest weight elements can be expressed very simply using Kashiwara's involution on the Verma crystal.
Full heaps and representations of affine Kac--Moody algebras
We give a combinatorial construction, not involving a presentation, of almost all untwisted affine Kac--Moody algebras modulo their one-dimensional centres in terms of signed raising and lowering operators on a certain distributive lattice ${\Cal B}$. The lattice ${\Cal B}$ is constructed combinatorially as a set of ideals of a ``full heap'' over the Dynkin diagram, which leads to a kind of categorification of the positive roots for the Kac--Moody algebra. The lattice ${\Cal B}$ is also a crystal in the sense of Kashiwara, and its span affords representations of the associated quantum affine algebra and affine Weyl group. There are analogues of these results for two infinite families of twisted affine Kac--Moody algebras, which we hope to treat more fully elsewhere.
By restriction, we obtain combinatorial constructions of the finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over $\complex$, except those of types $E_8$, $F_4$ and $G_2$. The Chevalley basis corresponding to an arbitrary orientation of the Dynkin diagram is then represented explicitly by raising and lowering operators. We also obtain combinatorial constructions of the spin modules for Lie algebras of types $B$ and $D$, which avoid Clifford algebras, and in which the action of Chevalley bases on the canonical bases of the modules may be explicitly calculated.

We define a set of operations called crystal operations on matrices with entries either in {0,1} or in N. There are horizontal and vertical crystal operations, giving rise to two commuting structures of a crystal graph on these matrices. They provide a new perspective on many aspects of the RSK correspondence and its dual, and related constructions. Under a straightforward encoding of semistandard tableaux by matrices, the operations correspond to crystal operations on tableaux, respectively to individual moves occurring during a jeu de taquin slide. We show that the (dual) RSK correspondence and the Burge correspondence arise as decompositions: a matrix M can be transformed by crystal operations into each of the matrices encoding P and Q symbol associated to M under these correspondences, and it can be reconstructed from P and Q.
These decomposition can also be interpreted as computing Robinson's correspondence, or as the Robinson-Schensted correspondence for pictures. From a particular way of applying crystal operations, the computation of these decompositions by growth diagrams can be deduced, as well as the local rules that are to be used. We show that that crystal operations leave a version of Greene's poset invariant defined for matrices unchanged, so that for such questions in the setting of matrices they can take the place of elementary Knuth transformations on words.

Discrete point sets $\mathcal{S}$ such as lattices or quasiperiodic Delone sets may permit, beyond their symmetries, certain isometries $R$ such that $\mathcal{S}\cap R\mathcal{S}$ is a subset of $\mathcal{S}$ of finite density. These are the so-called coincidence isometrie. They are important in understanding and classifying grain boundaries and twins in crystals and quasicrystals. It is the purpose of this contribution to introduce the corresponding coincidence problem in a mathematical setting and to demonstrate how it can be solved algebraically in dimensions 2, 3 and 4. Various examples both from crystals and quasicrystals are treated explicitly, in particular (hyper-)cubic lattices and quasicrystals with non-crystallographic point groups of type $H_2$, $H_3$ and $H_4$. We derive parametrizations of all linear coincidence isometries, determine the corresponding coincidence index (the reciprocal of the density of coinciding points, also called $\varSigma$-factor), and finally encapsulate their statistics in suitable Dirichlet series generating functions.
Crystal bases and combinatorics of infinite rank quantum groups

The tensor powers of the vector representation associated to an infinite rank quantum group decompose into irreducible components with multiplicities independant of the infinite root system considered. Although the irreducible modules obtained in this way are not of highest weight, they admit a crystal basis and a canonical basis. This permits in particular to obtain for each familly of classical Lie algebras a Robinson-Schensted correspondence on biwords defined on infinite alphabets. We then depict a structure of bi-crystal on these bi-words. This RS-correspondence yields also a plactic algebra and plactic Schur functions distinct for each infinite root system. Surprisingly, the algebras spanned by these plactic Schur functions are all isomorphic to the algebra of symmetric functions.

We explicitly describe the local structure of $B$, confirming a conjecture of Stembridge.

We study natural quantizations of branching coefficients corresponding to the restrictions of the classical Lie groups to their Levi subgroups. We show that they admit a stable limit which can be regarded as a $q$-analogue of a tensor product multiplicity. According to a conjecture by Shimozono, the stable one-dimensional sum for nonexceptional affine crystals are expected to occur as special cases of these $q$-analogues.

This paper makes precise the close connection between the affine Hecke algebra, the path model, and the theory of crystals. Section 2 is a basic pictorial exposition of Weyl groups and affine Weyl groups and Section 5 is an exposition of the theory of (a) symmetric functions, (b) crystals and (c) the path model. Sections 3 and 4 give an exposition of the affine Hecke algebra and recent results regarding the combinatorics of spherical functions on p-adic groups (Hall-Littlewood polynomials). The $q$-analogue of the theory of crystals developed in Section 4 specializes to the path model version of the ``classical'' crystal theory. The connection to the affine Hecke algebra and the approach to spherical functions for a $p$-adic group in Nelsen-Ram was made concrete by C. Schwer who told me that ``the periodic Hecke module encodes the positively folded galleries'' of Gaussent-Littelmann. This paper is a further development of this point of view.
Fermionic Formulas For Unrestricted Kostka Polynomials And Superconformal Characters
The problem of finding fermionic formulas for the many generalizations of Kostka polynomials and for the characters of conformal field theories has been a very exciting research topic for the last few decades. In this dissertation we present new fermionic formulas for the unrestricted Kostka polynomials extending the work of Kirillov and Reshetikhin. We also present new fermionic formulas for the characters of N=1 and N=2 superconformal algebras which extend the work of Berkovich, McCoy and Schilling.
Fermionic formulas for the unrestricted Kostka polynomials of type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ in the case of symmetric and anti-symmetric crystal paths were given by Hatayama et al. We present new fermionic formulas for the unrestricted Kostka polynomials of type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ for all crystal paths based on Kirillov-Reshetihkin modules. We interpret the fermionic formulas in terms of a new set of unrestricted rigged configurations.
Fermionic formulas for the N=1 and N=2 superconformal algebras are derived using the Bailey lemma by establishing new Bailey flows from the nonunitary minimal models to the superconformal models.

We give a review of the current status of the X=M conjecture. Here X stands for the one-dimensional configuration sum and M for the corresponding fermionic formula. There are three main versions of this conjecture: the unrestricted, the classically restricted and the level-restricted version. We discuss all three versions and illustrate the methods of proof with many examples for type A_{n-1}^{(1)}. In particular, the combinatorial approach via crystal bases and rigged configurations is discussed. Each section ends with a conglomeration of open problems.
