We use Naito-Sagaki's work [S. Naito & D. Sagaki, J. Algebra 245 (2001) 395--412, J. Algebra 251 (2002) 461--474] on Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths fixed by diagram automorphisms to study the partitions fixed by Mullineux involution. We characterize the set of Mullineux-fixed partitions in terms of crystal graphs of basic representations of twisted affine Lie algebras of type $A_{2\ell}^{(2)}$ and of type $D_{\ell+1}^{(2)}$. We set up bijections between the set of symmetric partitions and the set of partitions into distinct parts. We propose a notion of double restricted strict partitions. Bijections between the set of restricted strict partitions (resp., the set of double restricted strict partitions) and the set of Mullineux-fixed partitions in the odd case (resp., in the even case) are obtained.
New fermionic formula for unrestricted Kostka polynomials

A new fermionic formula for the unrestricted Kostka polynomials of type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ is presented. This formula is different from the one given by Hatayama et al. and is valid for all crystal paths based on Kirillov-Reshetihkin modules, not just for the symmetric and anti-symmetric case. The fermionic formula can be interpreted in terms of a new set of unrestricted rigged configurations. For the proof a statistics preserving bijection from this new set of unrestricted rigged configurations to the set of unrestricted crystal paths is given which generalizes a bijection of Kirillov and Reshetikhin.

In this paper, we continue the development of a new combinatorial model for the irreducible characters of a complex semisimple Lie group. This model, which will be referred to as the alcove path model, can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. It leads to an extensive generalization of the combinatorics of irreducible characters from Lie type A (where the combinatorics is based on Young tableaux, for instance) to arbitrary type. The main results of this paper are: (1) a combinatorial description of the crystal graphs corresponding to the irreducible representations (this result includes a transparent proof, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of the fact that the mentioned description does not depend on the choice involved in our model); (2) a combinatorial realization of Lusztig's involution on the canonical basis (this involution exhibits the crystals as self-dual posets, corresponds to the action of the longest Weyl group element on an irreducible representation, and generalizes Schutzenberger's involution on tableaux); (3) an analog for arbitrary root systems, based on the Yang-Baxter equation, of Schutzenberger's sliding algorithm, which is also known as jeu de taquin (this algorithm has many applications to the representation theory of the Lie algebra of type A).

Rigged configurations are combinatorial objects originating from the Bethe Ansatz, that label highest weight crystal elements. In this paper a new unrestricted set of rigged configurations is introduced for types ADE by constructing a crystal structure on the set of rigged configurations. In type A an explicit characterization of unrestricted rigged configurations is provided which leads to a new fermionic formula for unrestricted Kostka polynomials or q-supernomial coefficients. The affine crystal structure for type A is obtained as well.
The crystal structure on the set of Mirkovic-Vilonen polytopes

In an earlier work, we proved that MV polytopes parameterize both Lusztig's canonical basis and the Mirkovic-Vilonen cycles on the Affine Grassmannian. Each of these sets has a crystal structure (due to Kashiwara-Lusztig on the canonical basis side and due to Braverman-Finkelberg-Gaitsgory on the MV cycles side). We show that these two crystal structures agree. As an application, we consider a conjecture of Anderson-Mirkovic which describes the BFG crystal structure on the level of MV polytopes. We prove their conjecture for sl_n and give a counterexample for sp_6. Finally we explain how Kashiwara data can be recovered from MV polytopes.

Plane partitions naturally appear in many problems of statistical physics and quantum field theory, for instance, in the theory of faceted crystals and of topological strings on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In this paper a connection is made between the exactly solvable model with the boson dynamical variables and a problem of enumeration of boxed plane partitions - three dimensional Young diagrams placed into a box of a finite size. The correlation functions of the boson model may be considered as the generating functionals of the Young diagrams with the fixed heights of its certain columns. The evaluation of the correlation functions is based on the Yang-Baxter algebra. The analytical answers are obtained in terms of determinants and they can also be expressed through the Schur functions.

We study a system of rods on the 2d square lattice, with hard-core exclusion. Each rod has a length between 2 and N. We show that, when N is sufficiently large, and for suitable fugacity, there are several distinct Gibbs states, with orientational long-range order. This is in sharp contrast with the case N=2 (the monomer-dimer model), for which Heilmann and Lieb proved absence of phase transition at any fugacity. This is the first example of a pure hard-core system with phases displaying orientational order, but not translational order; this is a fundamental characteristic feature of liquid crystals.

We present a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible integrable highest weight modules for complex symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. We describe crystal graphs and give a Littlewood-Richardson rule for decomposing tensor products of irreducible representations. The new model is based on the notion of a lambda-chain, which is a chain of positive roots defined by certain interlacing conditions.

The X=M conjecture of Hatayama et al. asserts the equality between the one-dimensional configuration sum X expressed as the generating function of crystal paths with energy statistics and the fermionic formula M for all affine Kac--Moody algebra. In this paper we prove the X=M conjecture for tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals B^{1,s} associated to symmetric powers for all nonexceptional affine algebras.
Standard Bases for Affine SL(n)-Modules
We give an elementary and easily computable basis for the Demazure modules in the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra sl(n)-hat (and the loop group SL(n)-hat). A novel feature is that we define our basis ``bottom-up'' by raising each extremal weight vector, rather than ``top-down'' by lowering the highest weight vector.
Our basis arises naturally from the combinatorics of its indexing set, which consists of certain subsets of the integers first specified by the Kyoto school in terms of crystal operators. We give a new way of defining these special sets in terms of a recursive but very simple algorithm, the roof operator, which is analogous to the left-key construction of Lascoux-Schutzenberger. The roof operator is in a sense orthogonal to the crystal operators.

The Kirillov--Reshetikhin modules W^{r,s} are finite-dimensional representations of quantum affine algebras U'_q(g), labeled by a Dynkin node r of the affine Kac--Moody algebra g and a positive integer s. In this paper we study the combinatorial structure of the crystal basis B^{2,s} corresponding to W^{2,s} for the algebra of type D_n^{(1)}.
The octahedron recurrence and gl(n) crystals
We study the hive model of gl(n) tensor products, following Knutson, Tao, and Woodward. We define a coboundary category where the tensor product is given by hives and where the associator and commutor are defined using a modified octahedron recurrence. We then prove that this category is equivalent to the category of crystals for the Lie algebra gl(n). The proof of this equivalence uses a new connection between the octahedron recurrence and the Jeu de Taquin and Schutzenberger involution procedures on Young tableaux.

We use Kashiwara-Nakashima's combinatorics of crystal graphs associated to the roots sytems $B_{n}$ and $D_{n}$ to extend the results of \QCITE{cite}{}{lec3} and \QCITE{cite}{}{Mor} by showing that Morris type recurrence formulas also exist for the orthogonal root systems. We derive from these formulas a statistic on Kashiwara-Nakashima's tableaux of types $B_{n},C_{n}$ and $D_{n}$ generalizing Lascoux-Sch\UNICODE{0xfc}tzenberger's charge and from which it is possible to compute the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials $K_{λ,μ}(q)$ with restrictive conditions on $(λ,μ)$ . This statistic is different from that obtained in \QCITE{cite}{}{lec3} from the cyclage graph structure on tableaux of type $C_{n}$. We show that such a structure also exists for the tableaux of types $B_{n}$ and $D_{n}$ but can not be simply related to the Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. Finally we give explicit formulas for $K_{λ,μ}(q)$ when $| λ| \leq 3,$ or $n=2$ and $μ=0$.

Following an idea of A. Berenstein, we define a commutor for the category of crystals of a finite dimensional complex reductive Lie algebra. We show that this endows the category of crystals with the structure of a coboundary category. Similar to the case of braided categories, there is a group naturally acting on multiple tensor products in coboundary categories. We call this group the cactus group and identify it as the fundamental group of the moduli space of marked real genus zero stable curves.

Hatayama et al. conjectured fermionic formulas associated with tensor products of U'_q(g)-crystals B^{r,s}. The crystals B^{r,s} correspond to the Kirillov--Reshetikhin modules which are certain finite dimensional U'_q(g)-modules. In this paper we present a combinatorial description of the affine crystals B^{r,1} of type D_n^{(1)}. A statistic preserving bijection between crystal paths for these crystals and rigged configurations is given, thereby proving the fermionic formula in this case. This bijection reflects two different methods to solve lattice models in statistical mechanics: the corner-transfer-matrix method and the Bethe Ansatz.

We give a new realization of arbitrary level perfect crystals and arbitrary level irreducible highest weight crystals of type $D_n^{(1)}$, in the language of Young walls. The notions of splitting of blocks and slices play crucial roles in the construction of crystals. The perfect crystals are realized as the set of equivalence classes of slices. And the irreducible highest weight crystals are realized as the affine crystals consisting of reduced proper Young walls which, in turn, are concatenations of slices.

Creation operators are given for the three distinguished bases of the type BCD universal character ring of Koike and Terada yielding an elegant way of treating computations for all three types in a unified manner. Deformed versions of these operators create symmetric function bases whose expansion in the universal character basis, has polynomial coefficients in $q$ with non-negative integer coefficients. We conjecture that these polynomials are one-dimensional sums associated with crystal bases of finite-dimensional modules over quantized affine algebras for all nonexceptional affine types. These polynomials satisfy a Macdonald-type duality.
A Unified Approach to Combinatorial Formulas for Schubert Polynomials

Schubert polynomials were introduced in the context of the geometry of flag varieties. This paper investigates some of the connections not yet understood between several combinatorial structures for the construction of Schubert polynomials; we also present simplifications in some of the existing approaches to this area. We designate certain line diagrams known as rc-graphs as the main structure. The other structures in the literature we study include: semistandard Young tableaux, Kohnert diagrams, and balanced labelings of the diagram of a permutation. The main tools in our investigation are certain operations on rc-graphs, which correspond to the coplactic operations on tableaux, and thus define a crystal graph structure on rc-graphs; a new definition of these operations is presented. One application of these operations is a straightforward, purely combinatorial proof of a recent formula (due to Buch, Kresch, Tamvakis, and Yong), which expresses Schubert polynomials in terms of products of Schur polynomials. In spite of the fact that it refers to many objects and results related to them, the paper is mostly self-contained.

The calculation of crystal structure from X-ray diffraction data requires that the phases of the ``structure factors'' (Fourier coefficients) determined by scattering be deduced from the absolute values of those structure factors. Motivated by a question of Herbert Hauptman, we consider the problem of determining phases by direct algebraic means in the case of crystal structures with $n$ equal atoms in the unit cell, with $n$ small. We rephrase the problem as a question about multiplicative invariants for a particular finite group action. We show that the absolute values form a generating set for the field of invariants of this action, and consider the problem of making this theorem constructive and practical; the most promising approach for deriving explicit formulas uses SAGBI bases.
Littelmann paths for the basic representation of an affine Lie algebra

We give a new model for the crystal graphs of an affine Lie algebra g^, combining Littelmann's path model with the Kyoto path model. The vertices of the crystal graph are represented by certain infinitely looping paths which we call skeins.
We apply this model to the case when the corresponding finite-dimensional algebra g has a minuscule representation (classical type and E_6, E_7). We prove that the basic level-one representation of g^, when considered as a representation of g, is an infinite tensor product of fundamental representations of g. A similar tensor product phenomenon holds for certain Demazure submodules of the basic representation.
