Polynomials for Crystal Frameworks and the Rigid Unit Mode Spectrum
Published • View PublicationBIB
To each discrete translationally periodic bar-joint framework $\C$ in $\bR^d$ we associate a matrix-valued function $Φ_\C(z)$ defined on the d-torus. The rigid unit mode spectrum $Ω(\C)$ of $\C$ is defined in terms of the multi-phases of phase-periodic infinitesimal flexes and is shown to correspond to the singular points of the function $z \to \rank Φ_\C(z)$ and also to the set of wave vectors of harmonic excitations which have vanishing energy in the long wavelength limit. To a crystal framework in Maxwell counting equilibrium, which corresponds to $Φ_\C(z)$ being square, the determinant of $Φ_\C(z)$ gives rise to a unique multi-variable polynomial $p_\C(z_1,\dots,z_d)$. For ideal zeolites the algebraic variety of zeros of $p_\C(z)$ on the d-torus coincides with the RUM spectrum. The matrix function is related to other aspects of idealised framework rigidity and flexibility and in particular leads to an explicit formula for the number of supercell-periodic floppy modes. In the case of certain zeolite frameworks in dimensions 2 and 3 direct proofs are given to show the maximal floppy mode property (order $N$). In particular this is the case for the cubic symmetry sodalite framework and some other idealised zeolites.

Geometry and Combinatorics of Crystal Melting
Published in Publ.Res.Inst.Math.Sci.Kyoto B28:193,2011 • Search Publication
We survey geometrical and especially combinatorial aspects of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants (also called BPS invariants) for toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, emphasizing the role of plane partitions and their generalizations in the recently proposed crystal melting model. We also comment on equivalence with a vicious walker model and the matrix model representation of the partition function.

Loop symmetric functions and factorizing matrix polynomials
These are notes for my talk at ICCM 2010, Beijing. We survey some results, obtained jointly with Pavlo Pylyavskyy, concerning the ring of loop symmetric functions. Motivations from networks on surfaces, total positivity, crystal graphs, and discrete integrable systems are discussed.

Finite motions from periodic frameworks with added symmetry
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent work from authors across disciplines has made substantial contributions to counting rules (Maxwell type theorems) which predict when an infinite periodic structure would be rigid or flexible while preserving the periodic pattern, as an engineering type framework, or equivalently, as an idealized molecular framework. Other work has shown that for finite frameworks, introducing symmetry modifies the previous general counts, and under some circumstances this symmetrized Maxwell type count can predict added finite flexibility in the structure. In this paper we combine these approaches to present new Maxwell type counts for the columns and rows of a modified orbit matrix for structures that have both a periodic structure and additional symmetry within the periodic cells. In a number of cases, this count for the combined group of symmetry operations demonstrates there is added finite flexibility in what would have been rigid when realized without the symmetry. Given that many crystal structures have these added symmetries, and that their flexibility may be key to their physical and chemical properties, we present a summary of the results as a way to generate further developments of both a practical and theoretic interest.

Compression of Nakajima monomials in type A and C
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe an explicit crystal morphism between Nakajima monomials and monomials which give a realization of crystal bases for finite dimensional irreducible modules over the quantized enveloping algebra for Lie algebras of type A and C. This morphism provides a connection between arbitrary Nakajima monomials and Nakashima Kashiwara tableaux. This yields a translation of Nakajima monomials to the Littelmann path model. Furthermore, as an application of our results we describe an insertion scheme for Nakajima monomials compatible to the insertion scheme for tableaux.

Refined Wall-Crossing, Free Fermions and Crystal Melting
In this paper, we use an M-theory model to conjecture the refined reminiscence of the OSV formula connecting the refined topological string partition function with the refined BPS states partition function for the toric Calabi-Yau threefolds without any compact four cycles. Further, we show how to use the vertex operators in 2d free fermions to reproduce the refined BPS states partition function for the $\mathbb{C}^3$ case and the wall-crossing formulas of the refined BPS states partition function for the resolved conifold and $\mathcal{O}(-2)\oplus\mathcal{O}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ cases.

Infinite Bar-Joint Frameworks, Crystals and Operator Theory
A theory of flexibility and rigidity is developed for general infinite bar-joint frameworks (G,p). Determinations of nondeformability through vanishing flexibility are obtained as well as sufficient conditions for deformability. Forms of infinitesimal flexibility are defined in terms of the operator theory of the associated infinite rigidity matrix R(G,p). The matricial symbol function of an abstract crystal framework is introduced, being the matrix-valued function on the $d$-torus representing R(G,p) as a Hilbert space operator. The symbol function is related to infinitesimal flexibility, deformability and isostaticity. Various generic abstract crystal frameworks which are in Maxwellian equilibrium, such as certain 4-regular planar frameworks, are proven to be square-summably infinitesimally rigid as well as smoothly deformable in infinitely many ways. The symbol function of a three-dimensional crystal framework determines the infinitesimal wave flexes in models for the low energy vibrational modes (RUMs) in material crystals. For crystal frameworks with inversion symmetry it is shown that the RUMS appear in surfaces, generalising a result of F. Wegner for tetrahedral crystals.

Crystals and total positivity on orientable surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a combinatorial model of networks on orientable surfaces, and study weight and homology generating functions of paths and cycles in these networks. Network transformations preserving these generating functions are investigated. We describe in terms of our model the crystal structure and R-matrix of the affine geometric crystal of products of symmetric and dual symmetric powers of type A. Local realizations of the R-matrix and crystal actions are used to construct a double affine geometric crystal on a torus, generalizing the commutation result of Kajiwara-Noumi-Yamada and an observation of Berenstein-Kazhdan. We show that our model on a cylinder gives a decomposition and parametrization of the totally nonnegative part of the rational unipotent loop group of GL_n.

Wall Crossing, Quivers and Crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the spectrum of BPS D-branes on a Calabi-Yau manifold using the 0+1 dimensional quiver gauge theory that describes the dynamics of the branes at low energies. The results of Kontsevich and Soibelman predict how the degeneracies change. We argue that Seiberg dualities of the quiver gauge theories, which change the basis of BPS states, correspond to crossing the "walls of the second kind." There is a large class of examples, including local del Pezzo surfaces, where the BPS degeneracies of quivers corresponding to one D6 brane bound to arbitrary numbers of D4, D2 and D0 branes are counted by melting crystal configurations. We show that the melting crystals that arise are a discretization of the Calabi-Yau geometry. The shape of the crystal is determined by the Calabi-Yau geometry and the background B-field, and its microscopic structure by the quiver Q. We prove that the BPS degeneracies computed from Q and Q' are related by the Kontsevich Soibelman formula, using a geometric realization of the Seiberg duality in the crystal. We also show that, in the limit of infinite B-field, the combinatorics of crystals arising from the quivers becomes that of the topological vertex. We thus re-derive the Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence.

Affine geometric crystals in unipotent loop groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study products of the affine geometric crystal of type A corresponding to symmetric powers of the standard representation. The quotient of this product by the R-matrix action is constructed inside the unipotent loop group. This quotient crystal has a semi-infinite limit, where the crystal structure is described in terms of limit ratios previously appearing in the study of total positivity of loop groups.

Intrinsic energy is a loop Schur function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit subtraction-free formula for the energy function in tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin crystals for symmetric powers of the standard representation of U_q'(\hat sl_n). The energy function is shown to be the tropicalization of a stretched staircase shape loop Schur function. The latter were introduced by the authors in the study of total positivity in loop groups.

Affine crystals, one-dimensional sums and parabolic Lusztig q-analogues
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is concerned with one-dimensional sums in classical affine types. We prove a conjecture of the third author and Zabrocki by showing they all decompose in terms of one-dimensional sums related to affine type A provided the rank of the root system considered is sufficiently large. As a consequence, any one-dimensional sum associated to a classical affine root system with sufficiently large rank can be regarded as a parabolic Lusztig q-analogue.

Crystal bases of modified quantized enveloping algebras and a double RSK correspondence
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 118 (2011), no. 7, 2131-2156 • View PublicationBIB
The crystal base of the modified quantized enveloping algebras of type $A_{+\infty}$ or $A_\infty$ is realized as a set of integral bimatrices. It is obtained by describing the decomposition of the tensor product of a highest weight crystal and a lowest weight crystal into extremal weight crystals, and taking its limit using a tableaux model of extremal weight crystals. This realization induces in a purely combinatorial way a bicrystal structure of the crystal base of the modified quantized enveloping algebras and hence its Peter-Weyl type decomposition generalizing the classical RSK correspondence.

Generalized energies and integrable D^{(1)}_n cellular automaton
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce generalized energies for a class of U_q(D^{(1)}_n) crystals by using the piecewise linear functions that are building blocks of the combinatorial R. They include the conventional energy in the theory of affine crystals as a special case. It is shown that the generalized energies count the particles and anti-particles in a quadrant of the two dimensional lattice generated by time evolutions of an integrable D^{(1)}_n cellular automaton. Explicit formulas are conjectured for some of them in the form of ultradiscrete tau functions.

Invariant tensors and the cyclic sieving phenomenon
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 23 (2016), no. 4, Paper 4.25 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a large class of examples of the cyclic sieving phenomenon by expoiting the representation theory of semi-simple Lie algebras. Let $M$ be a finite dimensional representation of a semi-simple Lie algebra and let $B$ be the associated Kashiwara crystal. For $r\ge 0$, the triple $(X,c,P)$ which exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon is constructed as follows: the set $X$ is the set of isolated vertices in the crystal $\otimes^rB$; the map $c\colon X\rightarrow X$ is a generalisation of promotion acting on standard tableaux of rectangular shape and the polynomial $P$ is the fake degree of the Frobenius character of a representation of $\mathfrak{S}_r$ related to the natural action of $\mathfrak{S}_r$ on the subspace of invariant tensors in $\otimes^rM$. Taking $M$ to be the defining representation of $\mathrm{SL}(n)$ gives the cyclic sieving phenomenon for rectangular tableaux.

Wall-crossing, free fermions and crystal melting
Published in Commun. Math. Phys.301:517-562, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
We describe wall-crossing for local, toric Calabi-Yau manifolds without compact four-cycles, in terms of free fermions, vertex operators, and crystal melting. Firstly, to each such manifold we associate two states in the free fermion Hilbert space. The overlap of these states reproduces the BPS partition function corresponding to the non-commutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants, given by the modulus square of the topological string partition function. Secondly, we introduce the wall-crossing operators which represent crossing the walls of marginal stability associated to changes of the B-field through each two-cycle in the manifold. BPS partition functions in non-trivial chambers are given by the expectation values of these operators. Thirdly, we discuss crystal interpretation of such correlators for this whole class of manifolds. We describe evolution of these crystals upon a change of the moduli, and find crystal interpretation of the flop transition and the DT/PT transition. The crystals which we find generalize and unify various other Calabi-Yau crystal models which appeared in literature in recent years.

The Non-commutative Topological Vertex and Wall Crossing Phenomena
Published in Adv.Theor.Math.Phys.14:1147-1181,2010 • View PublicationBIB
We propose a generalization of the topological vertex, which we call the "non-commutative topological vertex". This gives open BPS invariants for a toric Calabi-Yau manifold without compact 4-cycles, where we have D0/D2/D6-branes wrapping holomorphic 0/2/6-cycles, as well as D2-branes wrapping disks whose boundaries are on D4-branes wrapping non-compact Lagrangian 3-cycles. The vertex is defined combinatorially using the crystal melting model proposed recently, and depends on the value of closed string moduli at infinity. The vertex in one special chamber gives the same answer as that computed by the ordinary topological vertex. We prove an identify expressing the non-commutative topological vertex of a toric Calabi-Yau manifold X as a specialization of the closed BPS partition function of an orbifold of X, thus giving a closed expression for our vertex. We also clarify the action of the Weyl group of an affine A_L Lie algebra on chambers, and comment on the generalization of our results to the case of refined BPS invariants.

Bethe Ansatz, Inverse Scattering Transform and Tropical Riemann Theta Function in a Periodic Soliton Cellular Automaton for A^{(1)}_n
Published in SIGMA 6 (2010), 013, 52 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study an integrable vertex model with a periodic boundary condition associated with U_q(A_n^{(1)}) at the crystallizing point q=0. It is an (n+1)-state cellular automaton describing the factorized scattering of solitons. The dynamics originates in the commuting family of fusion transfer matrices and generalizes the ultradiscrete Toda/KP flow corresponding to the periodic box-ball system. Combining Bethe ansatz and crystal theory in quantum group, we develop an inverse scattering/spectral formalism and solve the initial value problem based on several conjectures. The action-angle variables are constructed representing the amplitudes and phases of solitons. By the direct and inverse scattering maps, separation of variables into solitons is achieved and nonlinear dynamics is transformed into a straight motion on a tropical analogue of the Jacobi variety. We decompose the level set into connected components under the commuting family of time evolutions and identify each of them with the set of integer points on a torus. The weight multiplicity formula derived from the q=0 Bethe equation acquires an elegant interpretation as the volume of the phase space expressed by the size and multiplicity of these tori. The dynamical period is determined as an explicit arithmetical function of the n-tuple of Young diagrams specifying the level set. The inverse map, i.e., tropical Jacobi inversion is expressed in terms of a tropical Riemann theta function associated with the Bethe ansatz data. As an application, time average of some local variable is calculated.
