Flag Descents and Eulerian Polynomials for Wreath Product Quotients
We investigate the $α$-colored Eulerian polynomials and a notion of descents introduced in a recent paper of Hedmark and show that such polynomials can be computed as a polynomial encoding descents computed over a quotient of the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_α\wr\mathfrak{S}_n$. Moreover, we consider the flag descent statistic computed over this same quotient and find that the flag Eulerian polynomial remains palindromic. We prove that the flag descent polynomial is palindromic over this same quotient by giving a combinatorial proof that the flag descent statistic is symmetrically distributed over the collection of colored permutations with fixed last color by way of a new combinatorial tool, the colored winding number of a colored permutation. We conclude with some conjectures, observations, and open questions.

Eulerian polynomials and descent statistics
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 90: 86-144, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We prove several identities expressing polynomials counting permutations by various descent statistics in terms of Eulerian polynomials, extending results of Stembridge, Petersen, and Brändén. Additionally, we find $q$-exponential generating functions for $q$-analogues of these descent statistic polynomials that also keep track of the inversion number or inverse major index. We also present identities relating several of these descent statistic polynomials to refinements of type B Eulerian polynomials and flag descent polynomials by the number of negative letters of a signed permutation. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving noncommutative symmetric functions, Brändén's modified Foata-Strehl action, and a group action of Petersen on signed permutations. Notably, the modified Foata-Strehl action yields an analogous relation between Narayana polynomials and the joint distribution of the peak number and descent number over 231-avoiding permutations, which we also interpret in terms of binary trees and Dyck paths.
$h^\ast$-polynomials of zonotopes
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 371 (2019), 2021-2042 • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial of a lattice polytope $P$ encodes information about the number of integer lattice points in positive integral dilates of $P$. The $h^\ast$-polynomial of $P$ is the numerator polynomial of the generating function of its Ehrhart polynomial. A zonotope is any projection of a higher dimensional cube. We give a combinatorial description of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of a lattice zonotope in terms of refined descent statistics of permutations and prove that the $h^\ast$-polynomial of every lattice zonotope has only real roots and therefore unimodal coefficients. Furthermore, we present a closed formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial of a zonotope in matroidal terms which is analogous to a result by Stanley (1991) on the Ehrhart polynomial. Our results hold not only for $h^\ast$-polynomials but carry over to general combinatorial positive valuations. Moreover, we give a complete description of the convex hull of all $h^\ast$-polynomials of zonotopes in a given dimension: it is a simplicial cone spanned by refined Eulerian polynomials.

On pattern avoiding indecomposable permutations
Comtet introduced the notion of indecomposable permutations in 1972. A permutation is indecomposable if and only if it has no proper prefix which is itself a permutation. Indecomposable permutations were studied in the literature in various contexts. In particular, this notion has been proven to be useful in obtaining non-trivial enumeration and equidistribution results on permutations. In this paper, we give a complete classification of indecomposable permutations avoiding a classical pattern of length 3 or 4, and of indecomposable permutations avoiding a non-consecutive vincular pattern of length 3. Further, we provide a recursive formula for enumerating $12\cdots k$-avoiding indecomposable permutations for $k\geq 3$. Several of our results involve the descent statistic. We also provide a bijective proof of a fact relevant to our studies.

In this paper we study the cycle descent statistic on permutations. Several involutions on permutations and derangements are constructed. Moreover, we construct a bijection between negative cycle descent permutations and Callan perfect matchings.
Two descent statistics over 321-avoiding centrosymmetric involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Centrosymmetric involutions in the symmetric group S_{2n} are permutations πsuch that π=π^{-1} and π(i)+π(2n+1-i)=2n+1 for all i, and they are in bijection with involutions of the hyperoctahedral group. We describe the distribution of some natural descent statistics on 321-avoiding centrosymmetric involutions, including the number of descents in the first half of the involution, and the sum of the positions of these descents. Our results are based on two new bijections, one between centrosymmetric involutions in S_{2n} and subsets of {1,...,n}, and another one showing that certain statistics on Young diagrams that fit inside a rectangle are equidistributed. We also use the latter bijection to refine a known result stating that the distribution of the major index on 321-avoiding involutions is given by the q-analogue of the central binomial coefficients.
Order-Chain Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two families $X$ and $Y$ of integral polytopes with nice combinatorial and algebraic properties, a natural way to generate new class of polytopes is to take the intersection $\mathcal{P}=\mathcal{P}_1\cap\mathcal{P}_2$, where $\mathcal{P}_1\in X$, $\mathcal{P}_2\in Y$. Two basic questions then arise: 1) when $\mathcal{P}$ is integral and 2) whether $\mathcal{P}$ inherits the "old type" from $\mathcal{P}_1, \mathcal{P}_2$ or has a "new type", that is, whether $\mathcal{P}$ is unimodularly equivalent to some polytope in $X\cup Y$ or not. In this paper, we focus on the families of order polytopes and chain polytopes and create a new class of polytopes following the above framework, which are named order-chain polytopes. In the study on their volumes, we discover a natural relation with Ehrenborg and Mahajan's results on maximizing descent statistics.

Coefficients of the Inflated Eulerian Polynomial
It follows from work of Chung and Graham that for a certain family of polynomials $T_{n}(x)$, derived from the descent statistic on permutations, the coefficient sequence of $T_{n-1}(x)$ coincides with that of the polynomial $T_{n}(x)/\left(1+x+\cdots+x^{n-1}\right)$. We observed computationally that the inflated $\mathbf{s}$-Eulerian polynomial $Q_{n}^{(\mathbf{s})}(x)$, which satisfies $Q_{n}^{(\mathbf{s})}(x) = T_{n}(x)$ when $\mathbf{s}=(1,2,\ldots,n)$, also satisfies this property for many sequences $\mathbf{s}$. In this work we characterize those sequences $\mathbf{s}$ for which the coefficient sequence of $Q_{n-1}^{(\mathbf{s})}(x)$ coincides with that of the polynomial $Q_{n}^{(\mathbf{s})}(x)/\left(1+x+\cdots+x^{s_{n}-1}\right)$. In particular, we show that all nondecreasing sequences satisfy this property. We also settle a conjecture of Pensyl and Savage by showing that the inflated $\mathbf{s}$-Eulerian polynomials are unimodal for all choices of positive integer sequences ${\bf s}$. In addition, we determine when these polynomials are palindromic and show our characterization is equivalent to another of Beck, Braun, Köppe, Savage, and Zafeirakopoulos.

Refining enumeration schemes to count according to permutation statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the question of computing the distribution of a permutation statistics over restricted permutations via enumeration schemes. The restricted permutations are those avoiding sets of vincular patterns (which include both classical and consecutive patterns), and the statistics are described in the number of copies of certain vincular patterns such as the descent statistic and major index. An enumeration scheme is a polynomial-time algorithm (specifically, a system of recurrence relations) to compute the number of permutations avoiding a given set of vincular patterns. Enumeration schemes' most notable feature is that they may be discovered and proven via only finite computation. We prove that when a finite enumeration scheme exists to compute the number of permutations avoiding a given set of vincular patterns, the scheme can also compute the distribution of certain permutation statistics with very little extra computation.

On the descent polynomial of signed multipermutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a conjecture of Savage and Visontai about the equidistribution of the descent statistic on signed permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\ldots,n,n\}$ and the ascent statistic on $(1,4,3,8,\ldots,2n-1,4n)$-inversion sequences, we investigate the descent polynomial of the signed permutations of a general multiset. We obtain a factorial generating function formula for a $q$-analog of these descent polynomials and apply it to show that they have only real roots. Two different proofs of the conjecture of Savage and Visontai are provided.

Permutation Statistics and Multiple Pattern Avoidance

For a set of permutation patterns $Π$, let $F^\text{st}_n(Π,q)$ be the st-polynomial of permutations avoiding all patterns in $Π$. Suppose $312\inΠ$. For a class of permutation statistics which includes inversion and descent statistics, we give a formula that expresses $F^\text{st}_n(Π;q)$ in terms of these st-polynomials where we take some subblocks of the patterns in $Π$. Using this formula, we can construct many examples of nontrivial st-Wilf equivalences. In particular, this disproves a conjecture by Dokos, Dwyer, Johnson, Sagan, and Selsor that all $\text{inv}$-Wilf equivalences are trivial.

Stirling permutations on multisets
A permutation $σ$ of a multiset is called Stirling permutation if $σ(s)\ge σ(i)$ as soon as $σ(i)=σ(j)$ and $i<s<j.$ In our paper we study Stirling polynomials that arise in the generating function for descent statistics on Stirling permutations of any multiset. We develop generalizations of the classical Stirling numbers and present their combinatorial interpretations. Particularly, we apply the theory of $P$-partitions. Using certain specifications we also introduce the Stirling numbers of odd type and generalizations of the central factorial numbers.

The $\s$-Eulerian polynomials have only real roots
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 367 (2015), 1441-1466 • View PublicationBIB
We study the roots of generalized Eulerian polynomials via a novel approach. We interpret Eulerian polynomials as the generating polynomials of a statistic over inversion sequences. Inversion sequences (also known as Lehmer codes or subexcedant functions) were recently generalized by Savage and Schuster, to arbitrary sequences $\s$ of positive integers, which they called $\s$-inversion sequences. Our object of study is the generating polynomial of the {\em ascent} statistic over the set of $\s$-inversion sequences of length $n$. Since this ascent statistic over inversion sequences is equidistributed with the descent statistic over permutations we call this generalized polynomial the \emph{$\s$-Eulerian polynomial}. The main result of this paper is that, for any sequence $\s$ of positive integers, the $\s$-Eulerian polynomial has only real roots. This result is first shown to generalize many existing results about the real-rootedness of various Eulerian polynomials. We then show that it can be used to settle a conjecture of Brenti, that Eulerian polynomials for all finite Coxeter groups have only real roots. It is then extended to several $q$-analogs. We also show that the MacMahon--Carlitz $q$-Eulerian polynomial has only real roots whenever $q$ is a positive real number confirming a conjecture of Chow and Gessel. The same holds true for the $(\des,\finv)$-generating polynomials and also for the $(\des,\fmaj)$-generating polynomials for the hyperoctahedral group and the wreath product groups, confirming further conjectures of Chow and Gessel, and Chow and Mansour, respectively.
Context-free Grammars and Multivariate Stable Polynomials over Stirling Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Haglund and Visontai established the stability of the multivariate Eulerian polynomials as the generating polynomials of the Stirling permutations, which serves as a unification of some results of Bóna, Brenti, Janson, Kuba, and Panholzer concerning Stirling permutations. Let $B_n(x)$ be the generating polynomials of the descent statistic over Legendre-Stirling permutations, and let $T_n(x)=2^nC_n(x/2)$, where $C_n(x)$ are the second-order Eulerian polynomials. Haglund and Visontai proposed the problems of finding multivariate stable refinements of the polynomials $B_n(x)$ and $T_n(x)$. We obtain context-free grammars leading to multivariate stable refinements of the polynomials $B_n(x)$ and $T_n(x)$. Moreover, the grammars enable us to obtain combinatorial interpretations of the multivariate polynomials in terms of Legendre-Stirling permutations and marked Stirling permutations. Such stable multivariate polynomials provide solutions to two problems posed by Haglund and Visontai.

Stable multivariate $W$-Eulerian polynomials
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 120(7):1929-1945, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a multivariate strengthening of Brenti's result that every root of the Eulerian polynomial of type $B$ is real. Our proof combines a refinement of the descent statistic for signed permutations with the notion of real stability-a generalization of real-rootedness to polynomials in multiple variables. The key is that our refined multivariate Eulerian polynomials satisfy a recurrence given by a stability-preserving linear operator. Our results extend naturally to colored permutations, and we also give stable generalizations of recent real-rootedness results due to Dilks, Petersen, and Stembridge on affine Eulerian polynomials of types $A$ and $C$. Finally, although we are not able to settle Brenti's real-rootedness conjecture for Eulerian polynomials of type $D$, nor prove a companion conjecture of Dilks, Petersen, and Stembridge for affine Eulerian polynomials of types $B$ and $D$, we indicate some methods of attack and pose some related open problems.

Diagonalization of the Matrices of the Multinomial Descent and Multinomial Inversion Statistics on the Symmetric Group
In the work of Varchenko, Zagier, Thibon, and Reiner, Saliola, Welker, linear algebraic properties of the multiplication map on the group algebra of the group algebra element are studied, which is the sum over all permutations weighted by q^{inv}, q^{maj}, inv. Here q is a variable, and inv and maj are the classical statistics inversion and major index. We define a multinomial descent statistic des_X and a multinomial inversion statistic inv_X. These new defined statistics are the multinomial expressions of the classical statistics descent des and inversion. We determine the spectrum and the multiplicity of each element of the spectrum of the analogously defined multiplication map on the group algebra for both des_X and inv_X. As corollaries we deduce the spectrum and the multiplicity of each element of the spectrum of the defined multiplication map on the group algebra for the statistics des, maj and inv.

The descent statistic over 123-avoiding permutations
We exploit Krattenthaler's bijection between 123-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths to determine the Eulerian distribution over the set $S_n(123)$ of 123-avoiding permutations in $S_n$. In particular, we show that the descents of a permutation correspond to valleys and triple falls of the associated Dyck path. We get the Eulerian numbers of $S_n(123)$ by studying the joint distribution of these two statistics on Dyck paths.

Eulerian quasisymmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called {\em Eulerian quasisymmetric functions}, which specialize to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. Our central result is a formula for the generating function for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specializes to a new and surprising $q$-analog of a classical formula of Euler for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. This $q$-analog computes the joint distribution of excedance number and major index, the only of the four important Euler-Mahonian distributions that had not yet been computed. Our study of the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions also yields results that include the descent statistic and refine results of Gessel and Reutenauer. We also obtain $q$-analogs, $(q,p)$-analogs and quasisymmetric function analogs of classical results on the symmetry and unimodality of the Eulerian polynomials. Our Eulerian quasisymmetric functions refine symmetric functions that have occurred in various representation theoretic and enumerative contexts including MacMahon's study of multiset derangements, work of Procesi and Stanley on toric varieties of Coxeter complexes, Stanley's work on chromatic symmetric functions, and the work of the authors on the homology of a certain poset introduced by Björner and Welker.

Eulerian quasisymmetric functions and poset topology
We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called {\em Eulerian quasisymmetric functions}, which have the property of specializing to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. Our central result is a formula for the generating function for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specializes to a new and surprising $q$-analog of a classical formula for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. Our Eulerian quasisymmetric functions refine symmetric functions that have occurred in various representation theoretic and enumerative contexts such as in MacMahon's study of multiset derangements, in work of Procesi and Stanley on toric varieties of Coxeter complexes and in Stanley's work on symmetric chromatic polynomials. Here we present yet another occurence in connection with the homology of a poset introduced by Björner and Welker.
