Isomorphism-free lexicographic enumeration of triangulated surfaces and 3-manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a fast enumeration algorithm for combinatorial 2- and 3-manifolds. In particular, we enumerate all triangulated surfaces with 11 and 12 vertices and all triangulated 3-manifolds with 11 vertices. We further determine all equivelar polyhedral maps on the non-orientable surface of genus 4 as well as all equivelar triangulations of the orientable surface of genus 3 and the non-orientable surfaces of genus 5 and 6.
Partially directed paths in a wedge
Published • View PublicationBIB
The enumeration of lattice paths in wedges poses unique mathematical challenges. These models are not translationally invariant, and the absence of this symmetry complicates both the derivation of a functional recurrence for the generating function, and solving for it. In this paper we consider a model of partially directed walks from the origin in the square lattice confined to both a symmetric wedge defined by $Y = \pm pX$, and an asymmetric wedge defined by the lines $Y= pX$ and Y=0, where $p > 0$ is an integer. We prove that the growth constant for all these models is equal to $1+\sqrt{2}$, independent of the angle of the wedge. We derive functional recursions for both models, and obtain explicit expressions for the generating functions when $p=1$. From these we find asymptotic formulas for the number of partially directed paths of length $n$ in a wedge when $p=1$. The functional recurrences are solved by a variation of the kernel method, which we call the ``iterated kernel method''. This method appears to be similar to the obstinate kernel method used by Bousquet-Melou. This method requires us to consider iterated compositions of the roots of the kernel. These compositions turn out to be surprisingly tractable, and we are able to find simple explicit expressions for them. However, in spite of this, the generating functions turn out to be similar in form to Jacobi $θ$-functions, and have natural boundaries on the unit circle.

A natural family of flag matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A flag matroid can be viewed as a chain of matroids linked by quotients. Flag matroids, of which relatively few interesting families have previously been known, are a particular class of Coxeter matroids. In this paper we give a family of flag matroids arising from an enumeration problem that is a generalization of the tennis ball problem. These flag matroids can also be defined in terms of lattice paths and they provide a generalization of the lattice path matroids of [Bonin et al., JCTA 104 (2003)].

Enumeration of subtrees of trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $T$ be a weighted tree. The weight of a subtree $T_1$ of $T$ is defined as the product of weights of vertices and edges of $T_1$. We obtain a linear-time algorithm to count the sum of weights of subtrees of $T$. As applications, we characterize the tree with the diameter at least $d$, which has the maximum number of subtrees, and we characterize the tree with the maximum degree at least $Δ$, which has the minimum number of subtrees.

Enumerations of Cayley graphs
We characterize the equivalence and the weak equivalence of Cayley graphs for a finite group $\C{A}$. Using these characterizations, we find enumeration formulae of the equivalence classes and weak equivalence classes of Cayley graphs. As an application, we find the number of weak equivalence classes of circulant graphs.

Efficient enumeration of graceful permutations
A graceful n-permutation is a graceful labeling of an n-vertex path P_n. In this paper we improve the asymptotic lower bound on the number of such permutations from (5/3)^n to 2.37^n. This is a computer-assisted proof based on an effective algorithm that enumerates graceful n-permutations. Our algorithm is also presented in detail.

High order expansion of matrix models and enumeration of maps
Perturbation of the GUE are known in physics to be related to enumeration of graphs on surfaces. We investigate this idea and show that for a small convex perturbation, we can perform a genus expansion: the moments of the empirical measure can be developed into a series whose g-th term is a generating function of graphs on a surface of genus g.

Automorphisms and Enumeration of Maps of Cayley Graph of a Finite Group
A map is a connected topological graph $Γ$ cellularly embedded in a surface. In this paper, applying Tutte's algebraic representation of map, new ideas for enumerating non-equivalent orientable or non-orientable maps of graph are presented. By determining automorphisms of maps of Cayley graph $Γ={\rm Cay}(G:S)$ with ${\rm Aut} Γ\cong G\times H$ on locally, orientable and non-orientable surfaces, formulae for the number of non-equivalent maps of $Γ$ on surfaces (orientable, non-orientable or locally orientable) are obtained . Meanwhile, using reseults on GRR graph for finite groups, we enumerate the non-equivalent maps of GRR graph of symmetric groups, groups generated by 3 involutions and abelian groups on orientable or non-orientable surfaces.

Totally Symmetric Self-Complementary Plane Partitions and Quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation: a conjecture

We present a new conjecture relating the minimal polynomial solution of the level-one $U_q(\frak{sl}(2))$ quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation for generic values of $q$ in the link pattern basis and some $q$-enumeration of Totally Symmetric Self-Complementary Plane Partitions.
Asymptotic enumeration of dense 0-1 matrices with specified line sums

Let S=(s_1,s_2,..., s_m) and T = (t_1,t_2,..., t_n) be vectors of non-negative integers with sum_{i=1}^{m} s_i = sum_{j=1}^n t_j. Let B(S,T) be the number of m*n matrices over {0,1} with j-th row sum equal to s_j for 1 <= j <= m and k-th column sum equal to t_k for 1 <= k <= n. Equivalently, B(S,T) is the number of bipartite graphs with m vertices in one part with degrees given by S, and n vertices in the other part with degrees given by T. Most research on the asymptotics of B(S,T) has focused on the sparse case, where the best result is that of Greenhill, McKay and Wang (2006). In the case of dense matrices, the only precise result is for the case of equal row sums and equal column sums (Canfield and McKay, 2005). This paper extends the analytic methods used by the latter paper to the case where the row and column sums can vary within certain limits. Interestingly, the result can be expressed by the same formula which holds in the sparse case.

Multivariable Christoffel-Darboux Kernels and Characteristic Polynomials of Random Hermitian Matrices
Published in SIGMA 2 (2006), 085, 12 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study multivariable Christoffel-Darboux kernels, which may be viewed as reproducing kernels for antisymmetric orthogonal polynomials, and also as correlation functions for products of characteristic polynomials of random Hermitian matrices. Using their interpretation as reproducing kernels, we obtain simple proofs of Pfaffian and determinant formulas, as well as Schur polynomial expansions, for such kernels. In subsequent work, these results are applied in combinatorics (enumeration of marked shifted tableaux) and number theory (representation of integers as sums of squares).
Decomposing simple permutations, with enumerative consequences

We prove that every sufficiently long simple permutation contains two long almost disjoint simple subsequences. This result has applications to the enumeration of restricted permutations. For example, it immediately implies a result of Bona and (independently) Mansour and Vainshtein that for any r, the number of permutations with at most r copies of 132 has an algebraic generating function.

Cambrian fans
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a finite Coxeter group W and a Coxeter element c of W, the c-Cambrian fan is a coarsening of the fan defined by the reflecting hyperplanes of W. Its maximal cones are naturally indexed by the c-sortable elements of W. The main result of this paper is that the known bijection cl_c between c-sortable elements and c-clusters induces a combinatorial isomorphism of fans. In particular, the c-Cambrian fan is combinatorially isomorphic to the normal fan of the generalized associahedron for W. The rays of the c-Cambrian fan are generated by certain vectors in the W-orbit of the fundamental weights, while the rays of the c-cluster fan are generated by certain roots. For particular ("bipartite") choices of c, we show that the c-Cambrian fan is linearly isomorphic to the c-cluster fan. We characterize, in terms of the combinatorics of clusters, the partial order induced, via the map cl_c, on c-clusters by the c-Cambrian lattice. We give a simple bijection from c-clusters to c-noncrossing partitions that respects the refined (Narayana) enumeration. We relate the Cambrian fan to well known objects in the theory of cluster algebras, providing a geometric context for g-vectors and quasi-Cartan companions.

On the Enumeration of Certain Weighted Graphs
We enumerate weighted graphs with a certain upper bound condition. We also compute the generating function of the numbers of these graphs, and prove that it is a rational function. In particular, we show that if the given graph is a bipartite graph, then its generating function is of the form $\frac{p(x)}{(1-x)^{m+1}}$, where $m$ is the number of vertices of the graph and $p(x)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $m$.

On refined enumerations of totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions II
In this paper we settle a weak version of a conjecture (i.e. Conjecture 6) by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey in the paper "Self-complementary totally symmetric plane partitions" (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 42, 277-292). In other words we show that the number of shifted plane partitions invariant under an involution is equal to the number of alternating sign matrices invariant under the vertical flip. We also give a determinantal formula for the general conjecture (Conjecture 6), but this determinant is still hard to evaluate. In this paper we introduce two new classes of domino plane partitions, one has the same cardinality as the set of half-turn symmetric alternating sign matrices and the other has the same cardinality as the set of vertically symmetric alternating sign matrices.
Random Matrices, Graphical Enumeration and the Continuum Limit of Toda Lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we derive a hierarchy of differential equations which uniquely determine the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion, for large $N$, of the logarithm of the partition function of $N \times N$ Hermitian random matrices. These coefficients are generating functions for graphical enumeration on Riemann surfaces. The case that we particularly consider is for an underlying measure that differs from the Gaussian weight by a single monomial term of degree $2ν$. The coupling parameter for this term plays the role of the independent dynamical variable in the differential equations. From these equations one may deduce functional analytic characterizations of the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion. Moreover, this ode system can be solved recursively to explicitly construct these coefficients as functions of the coupling parameter. This analysis of the fine structure of the asymptotic coefficients can be extended to multiple coupling parameters and we present a limited illustration of this for the case of two parameters.

Five Guidelines for Partition Analysis with Applications to Lecture Hall-type Theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Five simple guidelines are proposed to compute the generating function for the nonnegative integer solutions of a system of linear inequalities. In contrast to other approaches, the emphasis is on deriving recurrences. We show how to use the guidelines strategically to solve some nontrivial enumeration problems in the theory of partitions and compositions. This includes a strikingly different approach to lecture hall-type theorems, with new $q$-series identities arising in the process. For completeness, we prove that the guidelines suffice to find the generating function for any system of homogeneous linear inequalities with integer coefficients. The guidelines can be viewed as a simplification of MacMahon's partition analysis with ideas from matrix techiniques, Elliott reduction, and ``adding a slice''.

Ported Tutte Functions of Extensors and Oriented Matroids
The Tutte equations are ported (or set-pointed) when the equations F(N) = g_e F(N/e) + r_e F(N\e) are omitted for elements e in a distinguished set called ports. Solutions F can distinguish different orientations of the same matroid. A ported extensor with ground set is a decomposible element in the exterior algebra over a vector space with a given basis, called the ground set, containing a distinguished subset called ports. These can represent ported matroids and have analogous dualization, deletion and contraction operations. A ported extensor function is defined using dualization, port element renaming, exterior multiplication, and contraction of non-ports. We prove that this function satisfies a sign-corrected variant of the Tutte equations over exterior algebra. For non-ported unimodular, i.e., regular matroids, our function reduces to the basis generating function and for graphs the Laplacian (or Kirchhoff) determinant. In general, the function value, as an extensor, signifies the space of solutions to Kirchhoff's and Ohm's electricity equations after projection to the variables associated to the ports. Combinatorial interpretation of various determinants (the Plucker coordinates) generalize the matrix tree theorem and forest enumeration expressions for electrical resistance. The corank-nullity polynomial, basis expansions with activities, and a geometric lattice expansion generalize to ported Tutte functions of oriented matroids. The ported Tutte functions are parametrized, which raises the problem of how to generalize known characterizations of parameterized non-ported Tutte functions.

On the enumeration of positive cells in generalized cluster complexes and Catalan hyperplane arrangements

Let $Φ$ be an irreducible crystallographic root system with Weyl group $W$ and coroot lattice $\check{Q}$, spanning a Euclidean space $V$. Let $m$ be a positive integer and $\aA^m_Φ$ be the arrangement of hyperplanes in $V$ of the form $(α, x) = k$ for $α\in Φ$ and $k = 0, 1,...,m$. It is known that the number $N^+ (Φ, m)$ of bounded dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$ is equal to the number of facets of the positive part $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ of the generalized cluster complex associated to the pair $(Φ, m)$ by S. Fomin and N. Reading. We define a statistic on the set of bounded dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$ and conjecture that the corresponding refinement of $N^+ (Φ, m)$ coincides with the $h$-vector of $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$. We compute these refined numbers for the classical root systems as well as for all root systems when $m=1$ and verify the conjecture when $Φ$ has type $A$, $B$ or $C$ and when $m=1$. We give several combinatorial interpretations to these numbers in terms of chains of order ideals in the root poset of $Φ$, orbits of the action of $W$ on the quotient $\check{Q} / (mh-1) \check{Q}$ and coroot lattice points inside a certain simplex, analogous to the ones given by the first author in the case of the set of all dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$. We also provide a dual interpretation in terms of order filters in the root poset of $Φ$ in the special case $m=1$.

Tensor networks and the enumeration of regular subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose a universal approach to a range of enumeration problems in graphs. The key point is in contracting suitably chosen symmetric tensors placed at the vertices of a graph along the edges. In particular, this leads to an algorithm that counts the number of d-regular subgraphs of an arbitrary graph including the number of d-factors (previously we considered the case d=2 with a special emphasis on the enumeration of Hamiltonian cycles; cf. math.CO/0403339). We briefly discuss the problem of the computational complexity of this algorithm.
