Combinatorial enumeration of lattice paths by flaws with respect to a linear boundary of rational slope
Let $a,b$ be fixed positive coprime integers. For a positive integer $g$, write $W_k(g)$ for the set of lattice paths from the startpoint $(0,0)$ to the endpoint $(ga,gb)$ with steps restricted to $\{(1,0), (0,1)\}$, having exactly $k$ flaws (lattice points lying above the linear boundary connecting the startpoint to the endpoint). We determine $|W_k(g)|$ for all $k$ and $g$. The enumeration of lattice paths with respect to a linear boundary while accounting for flaws has a long and rich history, dating back at least to the 1949 results of Chung and Feller. The only previously known values of $|W_k(g)|$ are the extremal cases $k = 0$ and $k = g(a+b)-1$, determined by Bizley in 1954. Our main combinatorial result is that a certain subset of $W_k(g)$ is in bijection with $W_{k+1}(g)$. One consequence is that the value $|W_k(g)|$ is constant over each successive set of $a+b$ values of $k$. This in turn allows us to derive a recursion for $|W_k(g)|$ whose base case is given by Bizley's result for $k=0$. We solve this recursion to obtain a closed form expression for $|W_k(g)|$ for all $k$ and $g$. Our methods are purely combinatorial.

The monopole-dimer model on high-dimensional cylindrical, toroidal, Möbius and Klein grids
The dimer (monomer-dimer) model deals with weighted enumeration of perfect matchings (matchings). The monopole-dimer model is a signed variant of the monomer-dimer model whose partition function is a determinant. In 1999, Lu and Wu evaluated the partition function of the dimer model on two-dimensional grids embedded on a Möbius strip and a Klein bottle. While the partition function of the dimer model has been known for the two-dimensional grids with different boundary conditions, we present a similar product formula for the partition function of the monopole-dimer model on higher dimensional cylindrical and toroidal grid graphs. We also evaluate the same for the three-dimensional Möbius and Klein grid graphs and show that the formula does not generalise for the higher dimensions. Further, we present a relation between the product formula for the three-dimensional cylindrical and Möbius grid.

On the enumeration of series-parallel matroids
By the work of Ferroni and Larson, Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and Z-polynomials of complete graphs have combinatorial interpretations in terms of quasi series-parallel matroids. We provide explicit formulas for the number of series-parallel matroids and the number of simple series-parallel matroids of a given rank and cardinality, extending results of Ferroni-Larson and Gao-Proudfoot-Yang-Zhang.

Sparse Sets in Triangle-free Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set of vertices is $k$-sparse if it induces a graph with a maximum degree of at most $k$. In this missive, we consider the order of the largest $k$-sparse set in a triangle-free graph of fixed order. We show, for example, that every triangle-free graph of order 11 contains a 1-sparse 5-set; every triangle-free graph of order 13 contains a 2-sparse 7-set; and every triangle-free graph of order 8 contains a 3-sparse 6-set. Further, these are all best possible. For fixed $k$, we consider the growth rate of the largest $k$-sparse set of a triangle-free graph of order $n$. Also, we consider Ramsey numbers of the following type. Given $i$, what is the smallest $n$ having the property that all triangle-free graphs of order $n$ contain a 4-cycle or a $k$-sparse set of order $i$. We use both direct proof techniques and an efficient graph enumeration algorithm to obtain several values for defective Ramsey numbers and a parameter related to largest sparse sets in triangle-free graphs, along with their extremal graphs.

Enumeration of intersection graphs of $x$-monotone curves
A curve in the plane is $x$-monotone if every vertical line intersects it at most once. A family of curves are called pseudo-segments if every pair of them have at most one point in common. We construct $2^{Ω(n^{4/3})}$ families, each consisting of $n$ labelled $x$-monotone pseudo-segments such that their intersection graphs are different. On the other hand, we show that the number of such intersection graphs is at most $2^{O(n^{4/3}\log^2n)}$. Our proof uses a new upper bound on the number of set systems of size $m$ on a ground set of size $n$, with VC-dimension at most $d$. Much better upper bounds are obtained if we only count bipartite intersection graphs, or, in general, intersection graphs with bounded chromatic number.

De Bruijn Polyominoes
We introduce the notions of de Bruijn polyominoes and prismatic polyominoes, which generalize the notions of de Bruijn sequences and arrays. Given a small fixed polyomino $p$ and a set of colors $[n]$, a de Bruijn polyomino for $(p,n)$ is a colored fixed polyomino $P$ with cells colored from $[n]$ such that every possible coloring of $p$ from $[n]$ exists as a subset of $P$. We call de Bruijn polyominoes for $(p,n)$ of minimum size $(p,n)$-prismatic. We discuss for some values of $p$ and $n$ the shape of a $(p,n)$-prismatic polyomino $P$, the construction of a coloring of $P$, and the enumeration of the colorings of $P$. We find evidence that the difficulty of these problems may depend on the parity of the size of $p$

Reconfiguration and Enumeration of Optimal Cyclic Ladder Lotteries
A ladder lottery, known as ``Amidakuji'' in Japan, is a common way to decide an assignment at random. In this paper, we investigate reconfiguration and enumeration problems of cyclic ladder lotteries. First, when a permutation $π$ and an optimal displacement vector $\mathbf{x}$ are given, we investigate the reconfiguration and enumeration problems of the ``optimal'' cyclic ladder lotteries of $π$ and $\mathbf{x}$. Next, for a give permutation $π$ we consider reconfiguration and enumeration problems of the optimal displacement vectors of $π$.

Asymptotic enumeration of Haar graphical representations
Published in Combinatorica, Volume 45, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
This paper represents a significant leap forward in the problem of enumerating vertex-transitive graphs. Recent breakthroughs on symmetry of Cayley (di)graphs show that almost all finite Cayley (di)graphs have the smallest possible automorphism group. Extending the scope of these results, we enumerate (di)graphs admitting a fixed semiregular group of automorphisms with m orbits. Moreover, we consider the more intricate inquiry of prohibiting arcs within each orbit, where the special case m = 2 is known as the problem of finding Haar graphical representations (HGRs). We significantly advance the understanding of HGRs by proving that the proportion of HGRs among Haar graphs of a finite nonabelian group approaches 1 as the group order grows. As a corollary, we obtain an improved bound on the proportion of DRRs among Cayley digraphs in the solution of Morris and the second author to the Babai-Godsil conjecture.

Recurrence solution of monomer-polymer models on two-dimensional rectangular lattices
The problem of counting polymer coverings on the rectangular lattices is investigated. In this model, a linear rigid polymer covers $k$ adjacent lattice sites such that no two polymers occupy a common site. Those unoccupied lattice sites are considered as monomers. We prove that for a given number of polymers ($k$-mers), the number of arrangements for the polymers on two-dimensional rectangular lattices satisfies simple recurrence relations. These recurrence relations are quite general and apply for arbitrary polymer length ($k$) and the width of the lattices ($n$). The well-studied monomer-dimer problem is a special case of the monomer-polymer model when $k=2$. It is known the enumeration of monomer-dimer configurations in planar lattices is #P-complete. The recurrence relations shown here have the potential for hints for the solution of long-standing problems in this class of computational complexity.

Necklaces over a group with identity product
We address two variants of the classical necklace counting problem from enumerative combinatorics. In both cases, we fix a finite group $\mathcal{G}$ and a positive integer $n$. In the first variant, we count the ``identity-product $n$-necklaces'' -- that is, the orbits of $n$-tuples $\left(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n\right) \in \mathcal{G}^n$ that satisfy $a_1 a_2 \cdots a_n = 1$ under cyclic rotation. In the second, we count the orbits of all $n$-tuples $\left(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n\right) \in \mathcal{G}^n$ under cyclic rotation and left multiplication (i.e., the operation of $\mathcal{G}$ on $\mathcal{G}^n$ given by $h \cdot \left(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n\right) = \left(ha_1, ha_2, \ldots, ha_n\right)$). We prove bijectively that both answers are the same, and express them as a sum over divisors of $n$. Consequently, we generalize the first problem to $n$-necklaces whose product of entries lies in a given subset of $\mathcal{G}$ (closed under conjugation), and we connect a particular case to the enumeration of irreducible polynomials over a finite field with given degree and second-highest coefficient $0$.
Between weak and Bruhat: the middle order on permutations
We define a partial order $\mathcal{P}_n$ on permutations of any given size $n$, which is the image of a natural partial order on inversion sequences. We call this the ``middle order''. We demonstrate that the poset $\mathcal{P}_n$ refines the weak order on permutations and admits the Bruhat order as a refinement, justifying the terminology. These middle orders are distributive lattices and we establish some of their combinatorial properties, including characterization and enumeration of intervals and boolean intervals (in general, or of any given rank), and a combinatorial interpretation of their Euler characteristic. We further study the (not so well-behaved) restriction of this poset to involutions, obtaining a simple formula for the Möbius function of principal order ideals there. Finally, we offer further directions of research, initiating the study of the canonical Heyting algebra associated with $\mathcal{P}_n$, and defining a parking function analogue of $\mathcal{P}_n$.

On the enumeration of permutations avoiding chains of patterns
In 2019, Bóna and Smith introduced the notion of strong pattern avoidance, saying that a permutation $π$ strongly avoids a pattern $σ$ if $π$ and $π^2$ both avoid $σ$. Recently, Archer and Geary generalized the idea of strong pattern avoidance to chain avoidance, in which a permutation $π$ avoids a chain of patterns $(τ^{(1)}:τ^{(2)}:\cdots:τ^{(k)})$ if the $i$-th power of the permutation avoids the pattern $τ^{(i)}$ for $1\leq i\leq k$. In this paper, we give explicit formulae for the number of sets of permutations avoiding certain chains of patterns. Our results give affirmative answers to two conjectures proposed by Archer and Geary.

Galoisian structure of large steps walks in the quadrant
The enumeration of walks in the quarter plane confined in the first quadrant has attracted a lot of attention over the past fifteenth years. The generating functions associated to small steps models satisfy a functional equation in two catalytic variables. For such models, Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna defined a group called the group of the walk which turned out to be central in the classification of small steps models. In particular, its action on the catalytic variables yields a set of change of variables compatible with the structure of the functional equation. This particular set called the orbit has been generalized to models with arbitrary large steps by Bostan, Bousquet-Mélou and Melczer. However, the orbit had till now no underlying group. In this article, we endow the orbit with the action of a Galois group, which extends the group of the walk to models with large steps. Within this Galoisian framework, we generalized the notions of invariants and decoupling. This enable us to develop a general strategy to prove the algebraicity of models with small backward steps. Our constructions lead to the first proofs of algebraicity of weighted models with large steps, proving in particular a conjecture of Bostan, Bousquet-Mélou and Melczer, and allowing us to find new algebraic models with large steps.

An exact enumeration of vertex connectivity of the enhanced power graphs of finite nilpotent groups
The enhanced power graph of a group $G$ is a graph with vertex set $G,$ where two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if there exists an element $w$ in $G$ such that both $x$ and $y$ are powers of $w.$ In this paper, we determine the vertex connectivity of the enhanced power graph of any finite nilpotent group.

Bivariate Generating Functions Enumerating Non-Bonding Dominoes on Rectangular Boards
The manuscript studies configurations of non-overlapping non-bonding dominoes on finite rectangular boards of unit squares characterized by row and column number. The non-bonding dominoes are defined here by the requirement that any domino on the board shares at most one point (one of its four corner points) with any other domino, but no edge. With the Transfer Matrix Method, rational generating functions are derived that solve the enumeration problem entirely, here evaluated for boards with up to six rows or columns.

Off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of odd order
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math.161(2024), Paper No. 102759, 35 pp • Search Publication
We study the enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds in two directions: (1) with one boundary defect, and (2) with maximally-many zeroes on the diagonal. In the first direction, we prove a symmetry property which states that the numbers of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of the Aztec diamond of order $2n-1$ are equal when the boundary defect is at the $k$th position and the $(2n-k)$th position on the boundary, respectively. This symmetry property proves a special case of a recent conjecture by Behrend, Fischer, and Koutschan. In the second direction, a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of "nearly" off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds, where the entries of the Pfaffian satisfy a simple recurrence relation. The numbers of domino tilings mentioned in the above two directions do not seem to have a simple product formula, but we show that these numbers satisfy simple matrix equations in which the entries of the matrix are given by Delannoy numbers. The proof of these results involves the method of non-intersecting lattice paths and a modification of Stembridge's Pfaffian formula for families of non-intersecting lattice paths. Finally, we propose conjectures concerning the log-concavity and asymptotic behavior of the number of off-diagonally symmetric domino tilings of odd-order Aztec diamonds.

Results on pattern avoidance in parking functions
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications, Volume 5, Issue 1, 2025, Article S2R2 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we mainly study two notions of pattern avoidance in parking functions. First, for any collection of length 3 patterns, we compute the number of parking functions of size $n$ that avoid them under the first notion. This is motivated by the recent work of Adeniran and Pudwell, who obtained analogous results using a second notion of pattern avoidance. Then, we provide new purely bijective proofs for two of their results, and improve the formula of another one. Finally, we apply similar enumeration techniques to the work of Novelli and Thibon on certain Hopf algebras of generalised parking functions, and compute their graded dimensions.

Computer classification of linear codes based on lattice point enumeration and integer linear programming
Published • View PublicationBIB
Linear codes play a central role in coding theory and have applications in several branches of mathematics. For error correction purposes the minimum Hamming distance should be as large as possible. Linear codes related to applications in Galois Geometry often require a certain divisibility of the occurring weights. In this paper we present an algorithmic framework for the classification of linear codes over finite fields with restricted sets of weights. The underlying algorithms are based on lattice point enumeration and integer linear programming. We present new enumeration and non-existence results for projective two-weight codes, divisible codes, and additive $\mathbb{F}_4$-codes.
