A spanning union of cycles in thin cylinder, torus and Klein bottle grid graphs
We propose an algorithm for obtaining the common transfer digraph $ D^*_m$ for enumeration of 2-factors in graphs from the title all of which with $m n$ vertices ($m, n \in N, m >1 $). The numerical data gathered for $m <19$ reveal some matchings of the numbers of 2-factors for different types of torus or Klein bottle. In latter case we conjecture that these numbers are invariant under twisting.

Type $1$, $2$, $3$ and $4$ $q$-negative binomial distribution of order $k$
We study the distributions of waiting times in variations of the negative binomial distribution of order $k$. One variation apply different enumeration scheme on the runs of successes. Another case considers binary trials for which the probability of ones is geometrically varying. We investigate the exact distribution of the waiting time for the $r$-th occurrence of success run of a specified length (non-overlapping, overlapping, at least, exactly, $\ell$-overlapping) in a $q$-sequence of binary trials. The main theorems are Type $1$, $2$, $3$ and $4$ $q$-negative binomial distribution of order $k$ and $q$-negative binomial distribution of order $k$ in the $\ell$-overlapping case. In the present work, we consider a sequence of independent binary zero and one trials with not necessarily identical distribution with the probability of ones varying according to a geometric rule. Exact formulae for the distributions obtained by means of enumerative combinatorics.

Multiple Scale Asymptotics of Map Enumeration
Published in Nonlinearity 36, 1663-1698 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a systematic approach to express generating functions for the enumeration of maps on surfaces of high genus in terms of a single generating function relevant to planar surfaces. Central to this work is the comparison of two asymptotic expansions obtained from two different fields of mathematics: the Riemann-Hilbert analysis of orthogonal polynomials and the theory of discrete dynamical systems. By equating the coefficients of these expansions in a common region of uniform validity in their parameters, we recover known results and provide new expressions for generating functions associated with graphical enumeration on surfaces of genera 0 through 7. Although the body of the article focuses on 4-valent maps, the methodology presented here extends to regular maps of arbitrary even valence and to some cases of odd valence, as detailed in the appendices.

Non-recursive Counts of Graphs on Surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The problem of map enumeration concerns counting connected spatial graphs, with a specified number $j$ of vertices, that can be embedded in a compact surface of genus $g$ in such a way that its complement yields a cellular decomposition of the surface. As such this problem lies at the cross-roads of combinatorial studies in low dimensional topology and graph theory. The determination of explicit formulae for map counts, in terms of closed classical combinatorial functions of $g$ and $j$ as opposed to a recursive prescription, has been a long-standing problem with explicit results known only for very low values of $g$. In this paper we derive closed-form expressions for counts of maps with an arbitrary number of even-valent vertices, embedded in surfaces of arbitrary genus. In particular, we exhibit a number of higher genus examples for 4-valent maps that have not appeared prior in the literature.

Regular Cayley Maps of Elementary abelian $p$-groups: Classification and Enumeration
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, regular Cayley maps of cyclic groups and dihedral groups have been classified. A nature question is to classify regular Cayley maps of elementary abelian $p$-groups $Z_p^n$. In this paper, a complete classification of regular Cayley maps of $Z_p^n$ is given and moreover, the number of these maps and their genera are enumerated.

Enumeration of Random Walk Positions in $L_1$-norm ball in $\mathbb{Z}^d$
In this paper, we mainly concerned about deriving the general formula to count the possible positions of $n$ step random walk in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with unit length in each step, which we denoted as $|P_n^{d}|$. For our results, we firstly propose a recurrence relation of the counting formula: $|P_n^{d+1}| = |P_n^d| + 2\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} |P_k^d|$. Next, we propose two methods in deriving the explicit formula of $|P_n^{d}|$ using generating functions and Faulhaber's formula. Finally, we reached our main theorem in the matrix representation of our formula.

Enumeration of permutations by the parity of descent positions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Noticing that some recent variations of descent polynomials are special cases of Carlitz and Scoville's four-variable polynomials, which enumerate permutations by the parity of descent and ascent positions, we prove a $q$-analogue of Carlitz-Scoville's generating function by counting the inversion number and a type B analogue by enumerating the signed permutations with respect to the parity of desecnt and ascent positions. As a by-product of our formulas, we obtain a $q$-analogue of Chebikin's formula for alternating descent polynomials, an alternative proof of Sun's gamma-positivity of her bivariate Eulerian polynomials and a type B analogue, the latter refines Petersen's gamma-positivity of the type B Eulerian polynomials.
Random cubic planar maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We analyse uniform random cubic rooted planar maps and obtain limiting distributions for several parameters of interest. From the enumerative point of view, we present a unified approach for the enumeration of several classes of cubic planar maps, which allow us to recover known results in a more general and transparent way. This approach allows us to obtain new enumerative results. Concerning random maps, we first obtain the distribution of the degree of the root face, which has an exponential tail as for other classes of random maps. Our main result is a limiting map-Airy distribution law for the size of the largest block $L$, whose expectation is asymptotically $n/\sqrt{3}$ in a random cubic map with $n+2$ faces. We prove analogous results for the size of the largest cubic block, obtained from $L$ by erasing all vertices of degree two, and for the size of the largest 3-connected component, whose expected values are respectively $n/2$ and $n/4$. To obtain these results we need to analyse a new type of composition scheme which has not been treated by Banderier et al. [Random Structures Algorithms 2001].
Enumeration of max-pooling responses with generalized permutohedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the combinatorics of max-pooling layers, which are functions that downsample input arrays by taking the maximum over shifted windows of input coordinates, and which are commonly used in convolutional neural networks. We obtain results on the number of linearity regions of these functions by equivalently counting the number of vertices of certain Minkowski sums of simplices. We characterize the faces of such polytopes and obtain generating functions and closed formulas for the number of vertices and facets in a 1D max-pooling layer depending on the size of the pooling windows and stride, and for the number of vertices in a special case of 2D max-pooling.

Generic Classification and Asymptotic Enumeration of Dope Matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a complex polynomial $P$ of degree $n$ and an $m$-tuple of distinct complex numbers $Λ=(λ_1,\ldots,λ_m)$, the dope matrix $D_P(Λ)$ is defined as the $m \times (n+1)$ matrix $(c)_{ij}$ with $c_{ij} =1$ if $P^{(j)}(λ_i)=0$ and $c_{ij}=0$ otherwise. We classify the set of dope matrices when the entries of $Λ$ are algebraically independent, resolving a conjecture of Alon, Kravitz, and O'Bryant. We also provide asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the total number of $m \times (n+1)$ dope matrices. For $m$ much smaller than $n$, these bounds give an asymptotic estimate of the logarithm of the number of $m \times (n+1)$ dope matrices.

Statistics on clusters and $r$-Stirling permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Goulden$\unicode{x2013}$Jackson cluster method, adapted to permutations by Elizalde and Noy, reduces the problem of counting permutations by occurrences of a prescribed consecutive pattern to that of counting clusters, which are special permutations with a lot of structure. Recently, Zhuang found a generalization of the cluster method which specializes to refinements by additional permutation statistics, namely the inverse descent number $\operatorname{ides}$, the inverse peak number $\operatorname{ipk}$, and the inverse left peak number $\operatorname{ilpk}$. Continuing this line of work, we study the enumeration of $2134\cdots m$-clusters by $\operatorname{ides}$, $\operatorname{ipk}$, and $\operatorname{ilpk}$, which allows us to derive formulas for counting permutations by occurrences of the consecutive pattern $2134\cdots m$ jointly with each of these statistics. Analogous results for the pattern $12\cdots (m-2)m(m-1)$ are obtained via symmetry arguments. Along the way, we discover that $2134\cdots (r+1)$-clusters are equinumerous with $r$-Stirling permutations introduced by Gessel and Stanley, and we establish some joint equidistributions between these two families of permutations.

The Generalized Cluster Complex: Refined Enumeration of Faces and Related Parking Spaces
Published in SIGMA 19 (2023), 069, 40 pages • View PublicationBIB
The generalized cluster complex was introduced by Fomin and Reading, as a natural extension of the Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster complex coming from finite type cluster algebras. In this work, to each face of this complex we associate a parabolic conjugacy class of the underlying finite Coxeter group. We show that the refined enumeration of faces (respectively, positive faces) according to this data gives an explicit formula in terms of the corresponding characteristic polynomial (equivalently, in terms of Orlik-Solomon exponents). This characteristic polynomial originally comes from the theory of hyperplane arrangements, but it is conveniently defined via the parabolic Burnside ring. This makes a connection with the theory of parking spaces: our results eventually rely on some enumeration of chains of noncrossing partitions that were obtained in this context. The precise relations between the formulas counting faces and the one counting chains of noncrossing partitions are combinatorial reciprocities, generalizing the one between Narayana and Kirkman numbers.

Dynamics of Pop-Tsack Torsing
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a finite irreducible Coxeter group $(W,S)$ with a fixed Coxeter element $c$ and set of reflections $T$, Defant and Williams define a pop-tsack torsing operation $\mathrm{Popt}\colon W \to W$ given by $\mathrm{Popt}(w) = w \cdot π_T(w)^{-1}$ where $π_T(w) = \bigvee_{t \leq_{T}w, \ t \in T}^{NC(w,c)}t$ is the join of all reflections lying below $w$ in the absolute order in the non-crossing partition lattice $NC(w,c)$. This is a "dual" notion of the pop-stack sorting operator $\mathrm{Pops}$ introduced by Defant as a way to generalize the pop-stack sorting operator on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ to general Coxeter groups. Define the forward orbit of an element $w \in W$ to be $O_{\mathrm{Popt}}(w) = \{w, \mathrm{Popt}(w), \mathrm{Popt}^2(w), \ldots \}$. Defant and Williams established the length of the longest possible forward orbits $\max_{w \in W}|O_{\mathrm{Popt}}(w)|$ for Coxeter groups of coincidental types and type $D$ in terms of the corresponding Coxeter number of the group. In their paper, they also proposed multiple conjectures about enumerating elements with near maximal orbit length. We resolve all the conjectures that they have put forth about enumeration, and in the process we give complete classifications of these elements of Coxeter groups of types $A,B$ and $D$ with near maximal orbit lengths.

Development of a Parallel BAT and Its Applications in Binary-state Network Reliability Problems
Various networks are broadly and deeply applied in real-life applications. Reliability is the most important index for measuring the performance of all network types. Among the various algorithms, only implicit enumeration algorithms, such as depth-first-search, breadth-search-first, universal generating function methodology, binary-decision diagram, and binary-addition-tree algorithm (BAT), can be used to calculate the exact network reliability. However, implicit enumeration algorithms can only be used to solve small-scale network reliability problems. The BAT was recently proposed as a simple, fast, easy-to-code, and flexible make-to-fit exact-solution algorithm. Based on the experimental results, the BAT and its variants outperformed other implicit enumeration algorithms. Hence, to overcome the above-mentioned obstacle as a result of the size problem, a new parallel BAT (PBAT) was proposed to improve the BAT based on compute multithread architecture to calculate the binary-state network reliability problem, which is fundamental for all types of network reliability problems. From the analysis of the time complexity and experiments conducted on 20 benchmarks of binary-state network reliability problems, PBAT was able to efficiently solve medium-scale network reliability problems.

Hausdorff moment problem for combinatorial numbers of Brown and Tutte: exact solution
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications, ECA 3:2 (2023) Article #S2R15, 10 pages • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the combinatorial sequences $A(M, n)$ introduced by W. G. Brown (1964) and W. T. Tutte (1980) appearing in enumeration of convex polyhedra. Their formula is $$A(M, n) = \frac{2 (2M+3)!}{(M+2)! M!}\,\frac{(4n+2M+1)!}{n! (3n + 2M + 3)!} $$ with $n, M =0, 1, 2, \ldots$, and we conceive it as Hausdorff moments, where $M$ is a parameter and $n$ enumerates the moments. We solve exactly the corresponding Hausdorff moment problem: $A(M, n) = \int_{0}^{R} x^{n} W_{M}(x) d x$ on the natural support $(0, R)$, $R = 4^{4}/3^{3}$, using the method of inverse Mellin transform. We provide explicitly the weight functions $W_{M}(x)$ in terms of the Meijer G-functions $G_{4, 4}^{4, 0}$, or equivalently, the generalized hypergeometric functions ${_{3}F_{2}}$ (for $M=0, 1$) and ${_{4}F_{3}}$ (for $M \geq 2$). For $M = 0, 1$, we prove that $W_{M}(x)$ are non-negative and normalizable, thus they are probability distributions. For $M \geq 2$, $W_{M}(x)$ are signed functions vanishing on the extremities of the support. By rephrasing this problem entirely in terms of Meijer G representations we reveal an integral relation which directly furnishes $W_M(x)$ based on ordinary generating function of $A(M, n)$ as an input. All the results are studied analytically as well as graphically.

A Complete Enumeration of Ballot Permutations Avoiding Sets of Small Patterns
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications 3:1 (2023) Article #S2R6 • View PublicationBIB
Permutations whose prefixes contain at least as many ascents as descents are called ballot permutations. Lin, Wang, and Zhao have previously enumerated ballot permutations avoiding small patterns and have proposed the problem of enumerating ballot permutations avoiding a pair of permutations of length $3$. We completely enumerate ballot permutations avoiding two patterns of length $3$ and we relate these avoidance classes with their respective recurrence relations and formulas, which leads to an interesting bijection between ballot permutations avoiding $132$ and $312$ with left factors of Dyck paths. In addition, we also conclude the Wilf-classification of ballot permutations avoiding sets of two patterns of length $3$, and we then extend our results to completely enumerate ballot permutations avoiding three patterns of length $3$.

Counting nearest faraway flats for Coxeter chambers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a finite Coxeter group $W$ and with two given conjugacy classes of parabolic subgroups $[X]$ and $[Y]$, we count those parabolic subgroups of $W$ in $[Y]$ that are full support, while simultaneously being simple extensions (i.e., extensions by a single reflection) of some standard parabolic subgroup of $W$ in $[X]$. The enumeration is given by a product formula that depends only on the two parabolic types. Our derivation is case-free and combines a geometric interpretation of the "full support" property with a double counting argument involving Crapo's beta invariant. As a corollary, this approach gives the first case-free proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of reflections of full support in a real reflection group $W$.

Composition-theoretic series in partition theory

We use sums over integer compositions analogous to generating functions in partition theory, to express certain partition enumeration functions as sums over compositions into parts that are $k$-gonal numbers; our proofs employ Ramanujan's theta functions. We explore applications to lacunary $q$-series, and to a new class of composition-theoretic Dirichlet series.

Quasi-Random Influences of Boolean Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We examine a hierarchy of equivalence classes of quasi-random properties of Boolean Functions. In particular, we prove an equivalence between a number of properties including balanced influences, spectral discrepancy, local strong regularity, homomorphism enumerations of colored or weighted graphs and hypergraphs associated with Boolean functions as well as the $k$th-order strict avalanche criterion amongst others. We further construct families of quasi-random boolean functions which exhibit the properties of our equivalence theorem and separate the levels of our hierarchy.
