Poset pinball, highest forms, and (n-2,2) Springer varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study type $A$ nilpotent Hessenberg varieties equipped with a natural $S^1$-action using techniques introduced by Tymoczko, Harada-Tymoczko, and Bayegan-Harada, with a particular emphasis on a special class of nilpotent Springer varieties corresponding to the partition $λ= (n-2,2)$ for $n \geq 4$. First we define the adjacent-pair matrix corresponding to any filling of a Young diagram with $n$ boxes with the alphabet $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Using the adjacent-pair matrix we make more explicit and also extend some statements concerning highest forms of linear operators in previous work of Tymoczko. Second, for a nilpotent operator $N$ and Hessenberg function $h$, we construct an explicit bijection between the $S^1$-fixed points of the nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\Hess(N,h)$ and the set of $(h,λ_N)$-permissible fillings of the Young diagram $λ_N$. Third, we use poset pinball, the combinatorial game introduced by Harada and Tymoczko, to study the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of type $A$ Springer varieties $\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)}$ associated to Young diagrams of shape $(n-2,2)$ for $n\geq 4$. Specifically, we use the dimension pair algorithm for Betti-acceptable pinball described by Bayegan and Harada to specify a subset of the equivariant Schubert classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety $\mathcal{F}\ell ags(\C^n)$ which maps to a module basis of $H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$ under the projection $H^*_T(\mathcal{F}\ell ags(\C^n)) \to H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$. Our pinball module basis is not poset-upper-triangular; this is the first concrete such example in the literature. A consequence of our proof is that there exists a simple and explicit change of basis which transforms our basis to a poset-upper-triangular module basis for $H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$. We close with open questions for future work.

A Giambelli formula for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a stability property in a sense analogous to the stability of the classical equivariant Schubert classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety.

Poset pinball, the dimension pair algorithm, and type A regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this manuscript we develop the theory of poset pinball, a combinatorial game recently introduced by Harada and Tymoczko for the study of the equivariant cohomology rings of GKM-compatible subspaces of GKM spaces. Harada and Tymoczko also prove that in certain circumstances, a successful outcome of Betti poset pinball yields a module basis for the equivariant cohomology ring of the GKM-compatible subspace. Our main contributions are twofold. First we construct an algorithm (which we call the dimension pair algorithm) which yields the result of a successful outcome of Betti poset pinball for any type $A$ regular nilpotent Hessenberg and any type $A$ nilpotent Springer variety, considered as GKM-compatible subspaces of the flag variety $\Flags(\C^n)$. The definition of the algorithm is motivated by a correspondence between Hessenberg affine cells and certain Schubert polynomials which we learned from Erik Insko. Second, in the special case of the type $A$ regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties specified by the Hessenberg function $h(1)=h(2)=3$ and $h(i) = i+1$ for $3 \leq i \leq n-1$ and $h(n)=n$, we prove that the pinball result coming from the dimension pair algorithm is poset-upper-triangular; by results of Harada and Tymoczko this implies the corresponding equivariant cohomology classes form a $H^*_{S^1}(\pt)$-module basis for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of the Hessenberg variety.

Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for reflection groups
Published in Advances in Math. vol 284, 22 (2015), 54-111 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we explicitly compute all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for semisimple or Kac-Moody groups G, that is, the structure coefficients of the cohomology algebra H^*(G/P), where P is a parabolic subgroup of G. These coefficients are of importance in enumerative geometry, algebraic combinatorics and representation theory. Our formula for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients is given in terms of the Cartan matrix and the Weyl group of G. However, if some off-diagonal entries of the Cartan matrix are 0 or -1, the formula may contain negative summands. On the other hand, if the Cartan matrix satisfies $a_{ij}a_{ji}\ge 4$ for all $i,j$, then each summand in our formula is nonnegative that implies nonnegativity of all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We extend this and other results to the structure coefficients of the T-equivariant cohomology of flag varieties G/P and Bott-Samelson varieties Gamma_\ii(G).

On the flag f-vector of a graded lattice with nontrivial homology
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is proved that the Boolean algebra of rank n minimizes the flag f-vector among all graded lattices of rank n, whose proper part has nontrivial top-dimensional homology. The analogous statement for the flag h-vector is conjectured in the Cohen-Macaulay case.

Decomposing Björner's Matrix
We give an alternative proof of a (former) conjecture of Björner stating that the matrix expressing face numbers in terms of g numbers is totally non-negative. We briefly discuss the case of simple flag polytopes.

Axioms for the g-vector of general convex polytopes
McMullen's g-vector is important for simple convex polytopes. This paper postulates axioms for its extension to general convex polytopes. It also conjectures that, for each dimension d, a stated finite calculation gives the formula for the extended g-vector. This calculation is done by computer for d=5 and the results analysed. The conjectures imply new linear inequalities on convex polytope flag vectors. Underlying the axioms is a hypothesised higher-order homology extension to middle perversity intersection homology (order-zero homology), which measures the failure of lower-order homology to have a ring structure.

Regular Polyhedra of Index Two, II
Published • View PublicationBIB
A polyhedron in Euclidean 3-space is called a regular polyhedron of index 2 if it is combinatorially regular and its geometric symmetry group has index 2 in its combinatorial automorphism group; thus its automorphism group is flag-transitive but its symmetry group has two flag orbits. The present paper completes the classification of finite regular polyhedra of index 2 in 3-space. In particular, this paper enumerates the regular polyhedra of index 2 with vertices on one orbit under the symmetry group. There are ten such polyhedra.

Sweeping the cd-Index and the Toric h-Vector
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive formulas for the cd-index and the toric h-vector of a convex polytope P from a sweeping by a hyperplane. These arise from interpreting the corresponding S-shelling of the dual of P. We describe a partition of the faces of the complete truncation of P to reflect explicitly the nonnegativity of its cd-index and what its components are counting. One corollary is a quick way to compute the toric h-vector directly from the cd-index. We also propose an "extended toric" h-vector that fully captures the information in the flag h-vector.

Polytopes, Hopf algebras and Quasi-symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we use the technique of Hopf algebras and quasi-symmetric functions to study the combinatorial polytopes. Consider the free abelian group $\mathcal{P}$ generated by all combinatorial polytopes. There are two natural bilinear operations on this group defined by a direct product $\times $ and a join $\divideontimes$ of polytopes. $(\mathcal{P},\times)$ is a commutative associative bigraded ring of polynomials, and $\mathcal{RP}=(\mathbb Z\varnothing\oplus\mathcal{P},\divideontimes)$ is a commutative associative threegraded ring of polynomials. The ring $\mathcal{RP}$ has the structure of a graded Hopf algebra. It turns out that $\mathcal{P}$ has a natural Hopf comodule structure over $\mathcal{RP}$. Faces operators $d_k$ that send a polytope to the sum of all its $(n-k)$-dimensional faces define on both rings the Hopf module structures over the universal Leibnitz-Hopf algebra $\mathcal{Z}$. This structure gives a ring homomorphism $\R\to\Qs\otimes\R$, where $\R$ is $\mathcal{P}$ or $\mathcal{RP}$. Composing this homomorphism with the characters $P^n\toα^n$ of $\mathcal{P}$, $P^n\toα^{n+1}$ of $\mathcal{RP}$, and with the counit we obtain the ring homomorphisms $f\colon\mathcal{P}\to\Qs[α]$, $f_{\mathcal{RP}}\colon\mathcal{RP}\to\Qs[α]$, and $\F^*:\mathcal{RP}\to\Qs$, where $F$ is the Ehrenborg transformation. We describe the images of these homomorphisms in terms of functional equations, prove that these images are rings of polynomials over $\mathbb Q$, and find the relations between the images, the homomorphisms and the Hopf comodule structures. For each homomorphism $f,\;f_{\mathcal{RP}}$, and $\F$ the images of two polytopes coincide if and only if they have equal flag $f$-vectors. Therefore algebraic structures on the images give the information about flag $f$-vectors of polytopes.

Multivariate Rogers-Szegö polynomials and flags in finite vector spaces
We give a recursion for the multivariate Rogers-Szegö polynomials, along with another recursive functional equation, and apply them to compute special values. We also consider the sum of all $q$-multinomial coefficients of some fixed degree and length, and give a recursion for this sum which follows from the recursion of the multivariate Rogers-Szegö polynomials, and generalizes the recursion for the Galois numbers. The sum of all $q$-multinomial coefficients of degree $n$ and length $m$ is the number of flags of length $m-1$ of subspaces of an $n$-dimensional vector space over a field with $q$ elements. We give a combinatorial proof of the recursion for this sum of $q$-multinomial coefficients in terms of finite vector spaces.

Face Numbers of Certain Cohen-Macaulay Flag Complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay complex is, in a certain sense, sufficiently "close" to being balanced, then there is a $d$-dimensional balanced Cohen-Macaulay complex having the same $f$-vector. This in turn provides some partial evidence for a conjecture of Kalai on the $f$-vectors of Cohen-Macaulay flag complexes.

Moment-angle complexes and polyhedral products for convex polytopes
Published in Proc. Steklov Inst. Math. 275(1), 2011, 15-46 • View PublicationBIB
Let P be a convex polytope not simple in general. In the focus of this paper lies a simplicial complex K_P which carries complete information about the combinatorial type of P. In the case when P is simple, K_P is the same as dP*, where P* is a polar dual polytope. Using the canonical embedding of a polytope P into nonnegative orthant, we introduce a moment-angle space Z_P for a polytope P. It is known, that in the case when P is simple the space Z_P is homeomorphic to the polyhedral product (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. When P is not simple, we prove that the space Z_P is homotopically equivalent to the space (D^2,S^1)^{K_P}. This allows to introduce bigraded Betti numbers for any convex polytope. A Stanley-Reisner ring of a polytope P can be defined as a Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex K_P. All these considerations lead to a natural question: which simplicial complexes arise as K_P for some polytope P? We have proceeded in this direction by introducing a notion of a polytopic simplicial complex. It has the following property: link of each simplex in a polytopic complex is either contractible, or retractible to a subcomplex, homeomorphic to a sphere. The complex K_P is a polytopic simplicial complex for any polytope P. Links of so called face simplices in a polytopic complex are polytopic complexes as well. This fact is sufficient enough to connect face polynomial of a simplicial complex K_P to the face polynomial of a polytope P, giving a series of inequalities on certain combinatorial characteristics of P. Two of these inequalities are equalities for each P and represent Euler-Poincare formula and one of Bayer-Billera relations for flag f-numbers. In the case when P is simple all inequalities turn out to be classical Dehn-Sommerville relations.

Projective Subgrassmannians of Polar Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this short note, completing a sequence of studies by Cooperstein, Kasikova and Shult, we consider the k-Grassmannians of a number of polar geometries of finite rank n. We classify those subspaces that are isomorphic to the j-Grassmannian of a projective m-space. In almost all cases, these are parabolic, that is, they are the residues of a flag of the polar geometry. Exceptions only occur when the subspace is isomorphic to the Grassmannian of 2-spaces in a projective m-space and we describe these in some detail. This Witt-type result implies that automorphisms of the Grassmannian are almost always induced by automorphisms of the underlying polar space.
The Rees product of posets
Published in Journal of Combinatorics 2 (2011), no. 2, 165--191 • View PublicationBIB
We determine how the flag f-vector of any graded poset changes under the Rees product with the chain, and more generally, any t-ary tree. As a corollary, the Möbius function of the Rees product of any graded poset with the chain, and more generally, the t-ary tree, is exactly the same as the Rees product of its dual with the chain, respectively, t-ary chain. We then study enumerative and homological properties of the Rees product of the cubical lattice with the chain. We give a bijective proof that the Möbius function of this poset can be expressed as n times a signed derangement number. From this we derive a new bijective proof of Jonsson's result that the Möbius function of the Rees product of the Boolean algebra with the chain is given by a derangement number. Using poset homology techniques we find an explicit basis for the reduced homology and determine a representation for the reduced homology of the order complex of the Rees product of the cubical lattice with the chain over the symmetric group.

Betti numbers of smooth Schubert varieties and the remarkable formula of Kostant,Macdonald,Shapiro and Steinberg
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to give a refinement of the product formula proved in [1] for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth Schubert variety in the flag variety of an algebraic group G over C. This yields a factorization of the number of elements in a Bruhat interval [e,w] in the Weyl group W of G provided the Schubert variety associated to w is smooth. This gives an elementary necessary condition for a Schubert variety in the flag variety to be smooth.

Primitive ideals in quantum Schubert cells: dimension of the strata
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to study the representation theory of quantum Schubert cells. Let $\g$ be a simple complex Lie algebra. To each element $w$ of the Weyl group $W$ of $\g$, De Concini, Kac and Procesi have attached a subalgebra $U_q[w]$ of the quantised enveloping algebra $U_q(\g)$. Recently, Yakimov showed that these algebras can be interpreted as the quantum Schubert cells on quantum flag manifolds. In this paper, we study the primitive ideals of $U_q[w]$. More precisely, it follows from the Stratification Theorem of Goodearl and Letzter that the primitive spectrum of $U_q[w]$ admits a stratification indexed by those primes that are invariant under a natural torus action. Moreover each stratum is homeomorphic to the spectrum of maximal ideals of a torus. The main result of this paper gives an explicit formula for the dimension of the stratum associated to a given torus-invariant prime.

On a Generalization of the Flag Complex Conjecture of Charney and Davis
The Flag Complex Conjecture of Charney and Davis states that for a simplicial complex $S$ which triangulates a $(2n - 1)$-generalized homology sphere as a flag complex one has $(-1)^n \sum_{σ\in S} \left(\frac{-1}{2}\right)^{\dimσ+ 1} \ge 0$, where the sum runs over all simplices $σ$ of $S$ (including the empty simplex). Interpreting the $1$-skeleta of $σ\in S$ as graphs of Coxeter groups, we present a stronger version of this conjecture, and prove the equivalence of the latter to the Flag Complex Conjecture.

Pattern characterization of rationally smooth affine Schubert varieties of type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schubert varieties in finite dimensional flag manifolds G/P are a well-studied family of projective varieties indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group W. In particular, there are many tests for smoothness and rational smoothness of these varieties. One key result due to Lakshmibai-Sandhya is that in type A the smooth Schubert varieties are precisely those that are indexed by permutations that avoid the patterns 4231 and 3412. Recently, there has been a flurry of research related to the infinite dimensional analogs of flag manifolds corresponding with G being a Kac-Moody group and W being an affine Weyl group or parabolic quotient. In this paper we study the case when W is the affine Weyl group of type A or the affine permutations. We develop the notion of pattern avoidance for affine permutations. Our main result is a characterization of the rationally smooth Schubert varieties corresponding to affine permutations in terms of the patterns 4231 and 3412 and the twisted spiral permutations.

Product and puzzle formulae for GL_n Belkale-Kumar coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Belkale-Kumar product on H*(G/P) is a degeneration of the usual cup product on the cohomology ring of a generalized flag manifold. In the case G=GL_n, it was used by N. Ressayre to determine the regular faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone. We show that for G/P a (d-1)-step flag manifold, each Belkale-Kumar structure constant is a product of d(d-1)/2 Littlewood-Richardson numbers, for which there are many formulae available, e.g. the puzzles of [Knutson-Tao '03]. This refines previously known factorizations into d-1 factors. We define a new family of puzzles to assemble these to give a direct combinatorial formula for Belkale-Kumar structure constants. These "BK-puzzles" are related to extremal honeycombs, as in [Knutson-Tao-Woodward~'04]; using this relation we give another proof of Ressayre's result. Finally, we describe the regular faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone on which the Littlewood-Richardson number is always 1; they correspond to nonzero Belkale-Kumar coefficients on partial flag manifolds where every subquotient has dimension 1 or 2.
