On higher-order Fourier analysis in characteristic $p$

In this paper, the nilspace approach to higher-order Fourier analysis is developed in the setting of vector spaces over a prime field $\mathbb{F}_p$, with applications mainly in ergodic theory. A key requisite for this development is to identify a class of nilspaces adequate for this setting. We introduce such a class, whose members we call $p$-homogeneous nilspaces. One of our main results characterizes these objects in terms of a simple algebraic property. We then prove various further results on these nilspaces, leading to a structure theorem describing every finite $p$-homogeneous nilspace as the image, under a nilspace fibration, of a member of a simple family of filtered finite abelian $p$-groups. The applications include a description of the Host-Kra factors of ergodic $\mathbb{F}_p^ω$-systems as $p$-homogeneous nilspace systems. This enables the analysis of these factors to be reduced to the study of such nilspace systems, with central questions on the factors thus becoming purely algebraic problems on finite nilspaces. We illustrate this approach by proving that for $k\leq p+1$ the $k$-th Host-Kra factor is an Abramov system of order $\leq k$, extending a result of Bergelson-Tao-Ziegler that holds for $k< p$. We illustrate the utility of $p$-homogeneous nilspaces also by showing that the above-mentioned structure theorem yields a new proof of the Tao-Ziegler inverse theorem for Gowers norms on $\mathbb{F}_p^n$.

Given a finitely generated group with generating set $S$, we study the cogrowth sequence, which is the number of words of length $n$ over the alphabet $S$ that are equal to one. This is related to the probability of return for walks the corresponding Cayley graph. Muller and Schupp proved the generating function of the sequence is algebraic when $G$ has a finite-index free subgroup (using a result of Dunwoody). In this work we make this result effective for free products of finite groups: we determine bounds for the degree and height of the minimal polynomial of the generating function, and determine the minimal polynomial explicitly for some families of free products. Using these results we are able to prove that a gap theorem holds: if $S$ is a finite symmetric generating set for a group $G$ and if $a_n$ denotes the number of words of length $n$ over the alphabet $S$ that are equal to $1$ then $\limsup_n a_n^{1/n}$ exists and is either $1$, $2$, or at least $2\sqrt{2}$.
Lattice Models, Hamiltonian Operators, and Symmetric Functions
We give general conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian operator whose discrete time evolution matches the partition function of certain solvable lattice models. In particular, we examine two classes of lattice models: the classical six-vertex model and a generalized family of $(2n+4)$-vertex models for each positive integer $n$. These models depend on a statistic called charge, and are associated to the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$. Our results show a close and unexpected connection between Hamiltonian operators and the Yang-Baxter equation.
The six-vertex model can be associated with Hamiltonians from classical Fock space, and we show that such a correspondence exists precisely when the Boltzmann weights are free fermionic. This allows us to prove that the free fermionic partition function is always a (skew) supersymmetric Schur function and then use the Berele-Regev formula to correct a result from of Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg on the free fermionic domain-wall partition function. In this context, the supersymmetric function involution takes us between two lattice models that generalize the vicious walker and osculating walker models.
Then, we prove a sharp solvability criterion for the six-vertex model with charge that provides the proper analogue of the free fermion condition. Building on results by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump, and Gustafsson, we show that this criterion exactly dictates when a charged model has a Hamiltonian operator acting on a Drinfeld twist of $q$-Fock space. The resulting partition function is then a (skew) supersymmetric LLT polynomial, and almost all supersymmetric LLT polynomials appear as partition functions of our lattice models. We also prove a Cauchy identity for skew supersymmetric LLT polynomials. (see 2024 author's note below)

We study bipartite distance-regular Cayley graphs with diameter three or four. We give sufficient conditions under which a bipartite Cayley graph can be constructed on the semidirect product of a group -- the part of this bipartite Cayley graph which contains the identity element -- and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$. We apply this to the case of bipartite distance-regular Cayley graphs with diameter three, and consider cases where the sufficient conditions are not satisfied for some specific groups such as the dihedral group. We also extend a result by Miklavič and Potočnik that relates difference sets to bipartite distance-regular Cayley graphs with diameter three to the case of diameter four. This new case involves certain partial geometric difference sets and -- in the antipodal case -- relative difference sets.

Let $G$ be a finite transitive group on a set $Ω$, let $α\in Ω$ and let $G_α$ be the stabilizer of the point $α$ in $G$. In this paper, we are interested in the proportion $$\frac{|\{ω\in Ω\mid ω\textrm{ lies in a }G_α\textrm{-orbit of cardinality at most two}\}|}{|Ω|},$$ that is, the proportion of elements of $Ω$ lying in a suborbit of cardinality at most two. We show that, if this proportion is greater than $5/6$, then each element of $Ω$ lies in a suborbit of cardinality at most two and hence $G$ is classified by a result of Bergman and Lenstra. We also classify the permutation groups attaining the bound $5/6$.
We use these results to answer a question concerning the enumeration of Cayley graphs. Given a transitive group $G$ containing a regular subgroup $R$, we determine an upper bound on the number of Cayley graphs on $R$ containing $G$ in their automorphism groups.

We refine the result of T. Lam \cite{L} on embedding the space $E_n$ of electrical networks on a planar graph with $n$ boundary points into the totally non-negative Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_{\geq 0}(n-1,2n)$ by proving first that the image lands in $\mathrm{Gr}(n-1,V)\subset \mathrm{Gr}(n-1,2n)$ where $V\subset \mathbb{R}^{2n}$ is a certain subspace of dimension $2n-2$. The role of this reduction in the dimension of the ambient space is crucial for us. We show next that the image lands in fact inside the Lagrangian Grassmannian $\mathrm{LG}(n-1,V)\subset \mathrm{Gr}(n-1,V)$. As it is well known $\mathrm{LG}(n-1)$ can be identified with $\mathrm{Gr}(n-1,2n-2)\cap \mathbb{P} L$ where $L\subset \bigwedge^{n-1}\mathbb R^{2n-2}$ is a subspace of dimension equal to the Catalan number $C_n$, moreover it is the space of the fundamental representation of the symplectic group $Sp(2n-2)$ which corresponds to the last vertex of the Dynkin diagram. We show further that the linear relations cutting the image of $E_n$ out of $\mathrm{Gr}(n-1,2n)$ found in \cite{L} define that space $L$. This connects the combinatorial description of $E_n$ discovered in \cite{L} and representation theory of the symplectic group.
Relating three combinatorial formulas for type $A$ Whittaker functions
In this work we study the relationship between several combinatorial formulas for type $A$ spherical Whittaker functions. These are spherical functions on $p$-adic groups, which arise in the theory of automorphic forms. They depend on a parameter $t$, and are a specialization of Macdonald polynomials, and further specialize to Schur polynomials upon setting $t=0$. There are three types of formulas for these polynomials. The first formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, works in arbitrary Lie type, and is derived from the Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials. The second one is in terms of certain fillings of Young diagrams, and is derived from, or is analogous to the Haglund-Haiman-Loehr formula for Macdonald polynomials. The third formula is in terms of the classical semistandard Young tableaux. We study the way in which each such formula is obtained from the previous one by combining terms $-$ a phenomenon called compression. No such results existed in the case of Whittaker functions.

In this note, we show the mixing of three-term progressions $(x, xg, xg^2)$ in every finite quasirandom groups, fully answering a question of Gowers. More precisely, we show that for any $D$-quasirandom group $G$ and any three sets $A_1, A_2, A_3 \subset G$, we have \[ \left|\Pr_{x,y\sim G}\left[ x \in A_1, xy \in A_2, xy^2 \in A_3\right] - \prod_{i=1}^3 \Pr_{x\sim G}\left[x \in A_i\right] \right| \leq \left(\frac{2}{\sqrt{D}}\right)^{\frac{1}{4}}.\] Prior to this, Tao answered this question when the underlying quasirandom group is $\mathrm{SL}_{d}(\mathbb{F}_q)$. Subsequently, Peluse extended the result to all nonabelian finite $\textit{simple}$ groups. In this work, we show that a slight modification of Peluse's argument is sufficient to fully resolve Gower's quasirandom conjecture for 3-term progressions. Surprisingly, unlike the proofs of Tao and Peluse, our proof is elementary and only uses basic facts from nonabelian Fourier analysis.

We show that the minimum number of vertices of a simplicial complex with fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ is at most $O(n)$ and at least $Ω(n^{3/4})$. For the upper bound, we use a result on orthogonal 1-factorizations of $K_{2n}$. For the lower bound, we use a fractional Sylvester-Gallai result. We also prove that any group presentation $\langle S | R\rangle \cong \mathbb{Z}^{n}$ whose relations are of the form $g^{a}h^{b}i^{c}$ for $g, h, i \in S$ has at least $Ω(n^{3/2})$ generators.

For a fixed integer $t \geq 2$, we consider the irreducible characters of representations of the classical groups of types A, B, C and D, namely $\text{GL}_{tn}, \text{SO}_{2tn+1}, \text{Sp}_{2tn}$ and $\text{O}_{2tn}$, evaluated at elements $ω^k x_i$ for $0 \leq k \leq t-1$ and $1 \leq i \leq n$, where $ω$ is a primitive $t$'th root of unity. The case of $\text{GL}_{tn}$ was considered by D. J. Littlewood (AMS press, 1950) and independently by D. Prasad (Israel J. Math., 2016). In this article, we give a uniform approach for all cases. In this article, we give a uniform approach for all cases. We also look at $\text{GL}_{tn+1}$ where we specialize the elements as before and set the last variable to $1$. In each case, we characterize partitions for which the character value is nonzero in terms of what we call $z$-asymmetric partitions, where $z$ is an integer which depends on the group. Moreover, if the character value is nonzero, we prove that it factorizes into characters of smaller classical groups. The proof uses Cauchy-type determinant formulas for these characters and involves a careful study of the beta sets of partitions. We also give product formulas for general $z$-asymmetric partitions and $z$-asymmetric $t$-cores. Lastly, we show that there are infinitely many $z$-asymmetric $t$-cores for $t \geq z+2$.

For each $n,r \geq 0$, let $KG(n,r)$ denote the Kneser Graph; that whose vertices are labeled by $r$-element subsets of $n$, and whose edges indicate that the corresponding subsets are disjoint. Fixing $r$ and allowing $n$ to vary, one obtains a family of nested graphs, each equipped with a natural action by a symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$, such that these actions are compatible and transitive. Families of graphs of this form were introduced by the authors in [RW], while a systematic study of random walks on these families were considered in [RW2]. In this paper we illustrate that these random walks never exhibit the so-called product condition, and therefore also never display total variation cutoff as defined by Aldous and Diaconis [AD]. In particular, we provide a large family of algebro-combinatorially motivated examples of collections of Markov chains which satisfy some well-known algebraic heuristics for cutoff, while not actually having the property.

The cactus group acts on the set of standard Young tableau of a given shape by (partial) Schützenberger involutions. It is natural to extend this action to the corresponding Specht module by identifying standard Young tableau with the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. We term these representations of the cactus group "Schützenberger modules", denoted $S^λ_{\mathsf{Sch}}$, and in this paper we investigate their decomposition into irreducible components. We prove that when $λ$ is a hook shape, the cactus group action on $S^λ_{\mathsf{Sch}}$ factors through $S_{n-1}$ and the resulting multiplicities are given by Kostka coefficients. Our proof relies on results of Berenstein and Kirillov and Chmutov, Glick, and Pylyavskyy.

Fully commutative elements in types $B$ and $D$ are completely characterized and counted by Stembridge. Recently, Feinberg-Kim-Lee-Oh have extended the study of fully commutative elements from Coxeter groups to the complex setting, giving an enumeration of such elements in $G(m,1,n)$. In this note, we prove a connection between fully commutative elements in $B_n$ and in $G(m,1,n)$, which allows us to characterize fully commutative elements in $G(m,1,n )$ by pattern avoidance. Further, we present a counting formula for such elements in $G(m,1,n)$.

A Coxeter group is said to be \emph{$\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite} if it has finitely many elements of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in the sense of Lusztig. In this paper, we give explicit combinatorial descriptions of the left, right, and two-sided Kazhdan--Lusztig cells of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in an irreducible $\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite Coxeter group. In particular, we introduce elements we call \emph{stubs} to parameterize the one-sided cells and we characterize the one-sided cells via both star operations and weak Bruhat orders. We also compute the cardinalities of all the one-sided and two-sided cells.

Fuglede's conjecture states that for a subset $Ω$ of a locally compact abelian group $G$ with positive and finite Haar measure, there exists a subset of the dual group of $G$ which is an orthogonal basis of $L^{2}(Ω)$ if and only if it tiles the group by translation. In this paper, we prove a divisibility property for a set in $\mathbb{Z}_{p}\times\mathbb{Z}_{p^{n}}$. Then using the divisibility property and equi-distributed property, we prove that Fuglede's conjecture holds in the group $\mathbb{Z}_{p}\times\mathbb{Z}_{p^{n}}$.

Signal analysis on graphs relies heavily on the graph Fourier transform, which is defined as the projection of a signal onto an eigenbasis of the associated shift operator. Large graphs of similar structure may be represented by a graphon. Theoretically, graphons are limit objects of converging sequences of graphs. Our work extends previous research aiming to provide a common scheme for signal analysis of graphs that are similar in structure to a graphon. We extend a previous definition of graphon Fourier transform, and show that the graph Fourier transforms of graphs in a converging graph sequence converge to the graphon Fourier transform of the limiting graphon. We then apply this convergence result to signal processing on Cayley graphons. We show that Fourier analysis of the underlying group enables the construction of a suitable eigen-decomposition for the graphon, which can be used as a common framework for signal processing on graphs converging to the graphon.

We initiate the study of model structures on (categories induced by) lattice posets, a subject we dub homotopical combinatorics. In the case of a finite total order $[n]$, we enumerate all model structures, exhibiting a rich combinatorial structure encoded by Shapiro's Catalan triangle. This is an application of previous work of the authors on the theory of $N_\infty$-operads for cyclic groups of prime power order, along with new structural insights concerning extending choices of certain model structures on subcategories of $[n]$.
