Shadows in the wild -- folded galleries and their applications

This survey is about combinatorial objects related to reflection groups and their applications in representation theory and arithmetic geometry. Coxeter groups and folded galleries in Coxeter complexes are introduced in detail and illustrated by examples. Further it is explained how they relate to retractions in Bruhat-Tits buildings and to the geometry of affine flag varieties and affine Grassmannians. The goal is to make these topics accessible to a wide audience.

For a simply connected connected simple algebraic group $G$, a cell $B_{w_0}^-=B^-\cap U\overline{w_0}U$ is a geometric crystal with a positive structure $θ_{\textbf{i}}^-:(\mathbb{C}^{\times})^{l(w_0)}\rightarrow B_{w_0}^-$. Applying the tropicalization functor to a rational function $Φ^h_{BK}=\sum_{i\in I}Δ_{w_0Λ_i,s_iΛ_i}$ called the half decoration on $B_{w_0}^-$, one can realize the crystal $B(\infty)$ in $\mathbb{Z}^{l(w_0)}$. By computing $Φ^h_{BK}$, we get an explicit form of $B(\infty)$ in $\mathbb{Z}^{l(w_0)}$. In this paper, we give an algorithm to compute $Δ_{w_0Λ_i,s_iΛ_i}\circ θ_{\textbf{i}}^-$ explicitly for $i\in I$ such that $V(Λ_i)$ is a minuscule representation of $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. In particular, the algorithm works for all $i\in I$ if $\mathfrak{g}$ is of type ${\rm A}_n$. The algorithm computes a directed graph $DG$, called a decoration graph, whose vertices are labelled by all monomials in $Δ_{w_0Λ_i,s_iΛ_i}\circ θ_{\textbf{i}}^-(t_1,\cdots,t_{l(w_0)})$. The decoration graph has some properties similar to crystal graphs of minuscule representations. We also verify that the algorithm works in some other cases, for example, the case $\mathfrak{g}$ is of type ${\rm G}_2$ though $V(Λ_i)$ is non-minuscule.

We continue our study on counting irreducible polynomials over a finite field with prescribed coefficients. We set up a general combinatorial framework using generating functions with coefficients from a group algebra which is generated by equivalent classes of polynomials with prescribed coefficients. Simplified expressions are derived for some special cases. Our results extend some earlier results.
McKay trees

Given a finite group $G$ and its representation $ρ$, the corresponding McKay graph is a graph $Γ(G,ρ)$ whose vertices are the irreducible representations of $G$; the number of edges between two vertices $π,τ$ of $Γ(G,ρ)$ is $dim Hom_G(π\otimes ρ, τ) $. The collection of all McKay graphs for a given group $G$ encodes, in a sense, its character table. Such graphs were also used by McKay to provide a bijection between the finite subgroups of $SU(2)$ and the affine Dynkin diagrams of types $A, D, E$, the bijection given by considering the appropriate McKay graphs.
In this paper, we classify all (undirected) trees which are McKay graphs of finite groups and describe the corresponding pairs $(G,ρ)$; this classification turns out to be very concise.
Moreover, we give a partial classification of McKay graphs which are forests, and construct some non-trivial examples of such forests.
Domains of Convergence for Polyhedral Packings
Polyhedral circle packings are generalizations of the Apollonian packing. We develop the theory of the Apollonian group, Descartes quadratic form, and related objects for all polyhedral packings. We use these tools to determine the domain of absolute convergence of a generating function that can be associated to any polyhedral packing. This domain of convergence is the Tits cone for an infinite root system.

In his famous monograph on permutation groups, H.~Wielandt gives an example of a Schur ring over an elementary abelian group of order $p^2$ ($p>3$ is a prime), which is non-schurian, that is, it is the transitivity module of no permutation group. Generalizing this example, we construct a huge family of non-schurian Schur rings over elementary abelian groups of even rank.
On the Left Connected Subalgebra of the Descent Algebra of a Coxeter Group of Classical Type

A Coxeter group of classical type $A_n$, $B_n$ or $D_n$ contains a chain of subgroups of the same type. We show that intersections of conjugates of these subgroups are again of the same type, and make precise in which sense and to what extent this property is exclusive to the classical types of Coxeter groups. As the main tool for the proof we use Solomon's descent algebra. Using Stirling numbers, we express certain basis elements of the descent algebra as polynomials and derive explicit multiplication formulas for a commutative subalgebra of the descent algebra.
Join operation for the Bruhat order and Verma modules

We observe that the join operation for the Bruhat order on a Weyl group agrees with the intersections of Verma modules in type $A$. The statement is not true in other types, and we propose a conjectural statement of a weaker correspondence. Namely, we introduce distinguished subsets of the Weyl group on which the join operation conjecturally agrees with the intersections of Verma modules. We also relate our conjecture with a statement about the socles of the cokernels of inclusions between Verma modules. The latter determines the first Ext spaces between a simple module and a Verma module. We give a conjectural complete description of such socles, which we verify in a number of cases. Along the way, we determine the poset structure of the join-irreducible elements in Weyl groups and obtain closed formulae for certain families of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.
A simple proof for the chromatic number of cyclic Latin squares of even order

The chromatic number of a cyclic Latin square of order 2n is 2n+2. The available proof for this statement includes a coloring that is rather lengthy. Here, we introduce a coloring of cyclic Latin square of even order 2n (the Latin square of a cyclic group's Cayley table) with 2n+2 colors using a simple method supported by a graphical presentation.
Flag codes of maximum distance and constructions using Singer groups

In this paper we study flag codes of maximum distance. We characterize these codes in terms of, at most, two relevant constant dimension codes naturally associated to them. We do this first for general flag codes and then particularize to those arising as orbits under the action of arbitrary subgroups of the general linear group. We provide two different systematic orbital constructions of flag codes attaining both maximum distance and size. To this end, we use the action of Singer groups and take advantage of the good relation between these groups and Desarguesian spreads, as well as the fact that they act transitively on lines and hyperplanes.

A Sidon set is a subset of an Abelian group with the property that each sum of two distinct elements is distinct. We construct a small maximal Sidon set of size $O((n \cdot 2^n)^{1/3})$ in the group $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$, generalizing a result of Ruzsa concerning maximal Sidon sets in the integers.

We establish lower bounds on the rank of matrices in which all but the diagonal entries lie in a multiplicative group of small rank. Applying these bounds we show that the distance sets of finite pointsets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ generate high rank multiplicative groups and that multiplicative groups of small rank cannot contain large sumsets.
Springer fibers and the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$

We introduce a family of varieties $Y_{n,λ,s}$, which we call the \emph{$Δ$-Springer varieties}, that generalize the type A Springer fibers. We give an explicit presentation of the cohomology ring $H^*(Y_{n,λ,s})$ and show that there is a symmetric group action on this ring generalizing the Springer action on the cohomology of a Springer fiber. In particular, the top cohomology groups are induction products of Specht modules with trivial modules. The $λ=(1^k)$ case of this construction gives a compact geometric realization for the expression in the Delta Conjecture at $t=0$. Finally, we generalize results of De Concini and Procesi on the scheme of diagonal nilpotent matrices by constructing an ind-variety $Y_{n,λ}$ whose cohomology ring is isomorphic to the coordinate ring of the scheme-theoretic intersection of an Eisenbud--Saltman rank variety and diagonal matrices.

Following Aguiló-Suñer-Torrens (2008), Kolesárová-Mesiar-Mordelová-Sempi (2006) and Mayor-Suñer-Torrens (2005), we continue to develop a theory of matrix representation for discrete copulas. To be more precise, we give characterizations of meet-irreducible discrete copulas from an order-theoretical aspect: we show that the set of all irreducible discrete copulas is a lattice in analogy with Nelsen and Úbeda-Flores (2005). Moreover, we clarify its lattice structure related to Kendall's $τ$ and Spearman's $ρ$ borrowing ideas from Coxeter groups.
An Exploration of the Symmetry Groups of Certain Configurations of Points
We start by introducing the basics of configurations of points and lines, and then move into discussing symmetry groups of these configurations. Specifically, we explore how we might classify the symmetries of $(9_3)$ and $(10_3)$ geometric configurations, given the graph automorphisms of their underlying set-configurations. Finally, we show how a specific class of combinatorial configurations called generalized cyclic configurations can be explored using this terminology, and give several interesting geometric results.

In 2020, Siemons and Zalesski [On the second eigenvalue of some Cayley graphs of the symmetric group. {\it arXiv preprint arXiv:2012.12460}, 2020] determined the second eigenvalue of the Cayley graph $Γ_{n,k} = \operatorname{Cay}(\operatorname{Sym}(n), C(n,k))$ for $k = 0$ and $k=1$, where $C(n,k)$ is the conjugacy class of $(n-k)$-cycles. In this paper, it is proved that for any $n\geq 3$ and $k\in \mathbb{N}$ relatively small compared to $n$, the second eigenvalue of $Γ_{n,k}$ is the eigenvalue afforded by the irreducible character of $\operatorname{Sym}(n)$ that corresponds to the partition $[n-1,1]$. As a byproduct of our method, the result of Siemons and Zalesski when $k \in \{0,1\}$ is retrieved. Moreover, we prove that the second eigenvalue of $Γ_{n,n-5}$ is also equal to the eigenvalue afforded by the irreducible character of the partition $[n-1,1]$.

The enhanced power graph of a group $G$ is a simple undirected graph with vertex set $G$ and two vertices are adjacent if they belong to same cyclic subgroup. In this paper, we study distant properties and detour distant properties such as closure, interior, distance degree sequence and eccentric subgraph of the enhanced power graph of semidihedral group. Consequently, we obtained the metric dimension and resolving polynomial of the enhanced power graph of semidihedral group. At the final part of this paper, we obtained the Laplacian spectrum of the enhanced power graph of semidihedral, dihedral and generalized quaternion groups.
Fast Decoding of Union-free Codes

Union-free codes and disjunctive codes are two combinatorial structures, which are used in nonadaptive group testing to find a set of $d$ defective elements among $n$ samples by carrying out the minimal number of tests $t$. It is known that union-free codes have a larger rate, whereas disjunctive codes provide a more efficient decoding algorithm. In this paper we introduce a new family of codes for nonadaptive group testing with fast decoding. The rate of these codes is larger than the rate of disjunctive codes, while the decoding algorithm has the same complexity. In addition, we derive a lower bound on the rate of new codes for the case of $d=2$ defectives, which is significantly better than the bound for disjunctive codes and almost as good as the bound for union-free codes.
Topology of augmented Bergman complexes

The augmented Bergman complex of a matroid is a simplicial complex introduced recently in work of Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot and Wang. It may be viewed as a hybrid of two well-studied pure shellable simplicial complexes associated to matroids: the independent set complex and Bergman complex.
It is shown here that the augmented Bergman complex is also shellable, via two different families of shelling orders. Furthermore, comparing the description of its homotopy type induced from the two shellings re-interprets a known convolution formula counting bases of the matroid. The representation of the automorphism group of the matroid on the homology of the augmented Bergman complex turns out to have a surprisingly simple description. This last fact is generalized to closures beyond those coming from a matroid.
