Properties of the Toric Rings of a Chordal Bipartite Family of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work concerns the study of properties of a group of Koszul algebras coming from the toric ideals of a chordal bipartite infinite family of graphs (alternately, these rings may be interpreted as coming from determinants of certain ladder-like structures). We determine a linear system of parameters for each ring and explicitly determine the Hilbert series for the resulting Artinian reduction. As corollaries, we obtain the multiplicity and regularity of the original rings. This work extends results easily derived from lattice theory for a subfamily coming from a two-sided ladder to a family where, as we show, lattice theory no longer applies in any obvious way and includes constructive proofs which may be useful in future study of these rings and others.

Probabilistic constructions in continuous combinatorics and a bridge to distributed algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The probabilistic method is a technique for proving combinatorial existence results by means of showing that a randomly chosen object has the desired properties with positive probability. A particularly powerful probabilistic tool is the Lovász Local Lemma (the LLL for short), which was introduced by Erdős and Lovász in the mid-1970s. Here we develop a version of the LLL that can be used to prove the existence of continuous colorings. We then give several applications in Borel and topological dynamics. * Seward and Tucker-Drob showed that every free Borel action $Γ\curvearrowright X$ of a countable group $Γ$ admits an equivariant Borel map $π\colon X \to Y$ to a free subshift $Y \subset 2^Γ$. We give a new simple proof of this result. * We show that for a countable group $Γ$, $\mathrm{Free}(2^Γ)$ is weakly contained, in the sense of Elek, in every free continuous action of $Γ$ on a zero-dimensional Polish space. This fact is analogous to the theorem of Abért and Weiss for probability measure-preserving actions and has a number of consequences in continuous combinatorics. In particular, we deduce that a coloring problem admits a continuous solution on $\mathrm{Free}(2^Γ)$ if and only if it can be solved on finite subgraphs of the Cayley graph of $Γ$ by an efficient deterministic distributed algorithm (this fact was also proved independently and using different methods by Seward). This establishes a formal correspondence between questions that have been studied independently in continuous combinatorics and in distributed computing.

Integer colorings with no rainbow 3-term arithmetic progression
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 29(2) (2022), #P2.28 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the rainbow Erdős-Rothschild problem with respect to 3-term arithmetic progressions. We obtain the asymptotic number of $r$-colorings of $[n]$ without rainbow 3-term arithmetic progressions, and we show that the typical colorings with this property are 2-colorings. We also prove that $[n]$ attains the maximum number of rainbow 3-term arithmetic progression-free $r$-colorings among all subsets of $[n]$. Moreover, the exact number of rainbow 3-term arithmetic progression-free $r$-colorings of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is obtained, where $p$ is any prime and $\mathbb{Z}_p$ is the cyclic group of order $p$.

Multiple ergodic averages in abelian groups and Khintchine type recurrence
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a countable abelian group. We study ergodic averages associated with configurations of the form $\{ag,bg,(a+b)g\}$ for some $a,b\in\mathbb{Z}$. Under some assumptions on $G$, we prove that the universal characteristic factor for these averages is a factor of a $2$-step nilpotent homogeneous space. As an application we derive a Khintchine type recurrence result. In particular, we prove that for every countable abelian group $G$, if $a,b\in\mathbb{Z}$ are such that $aG,bG,(b-a)G$ and $(a+b)G$ are of finite index in $G$, then for every $E\subset G$ and $\varepsilon>0$ the set $$\{g\in G : d(E\cap E-ag\cap E-bg\cap E-(a+b)g)\geq d(E)^4-\varepsilon\}$$ is syndetic. This generalizes previous results for $G=\mathbb{Z}$, $G=\mathbb{F}_p^ω$ and $G=\bigoplus_{p\in P}\mathbb{F}_p$ by Bergelson Host and Kra, Bergelson Tao and Ziegler and the author, respectively.

Sharing pizza in n dimensions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and prove the $n$-dimensional Pizza Theorem: Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. If $K$ is a measurable set of finite volume, the {pizza quantity} of $K$ is the alternating sum of the volumes of the regions obtained by intersecting $K$ with the arrangement $\mathcal{H}$. We prove that if $\mathcal{H}$ is a Coxeter arrangement different from $A_{1}^{n}$ such that the group of isometries $W$ generated by the reflections in the hyperplanes of $\mathcal{H}$ contains the map $-\mathrm{id}$, and if $K$ is a translate of a convex body that is stable under $W$ and contains the origin, then the pizza quantity of $K$ is equal to zero. Our main tool is an induction formula for the pizza quantity involving a subarrangement of the restricted arrangement on hyperplanes of $\mathcal{H}$ that we call the {even restricted arrangement}. More generally, we prove that for a class of arrangements that we call {even} (this includes the Coxeter arrangements above) and for a {sufficiently symmetric} set $K$, the pizza quantity of $K+a$ is polynomial in $a$ for $a$ small enough, for example if $K$ is convex and $0\in K+a$. We get stronger results in the case of balls, more generally, convex bodies bounded by quadratic hypersurfaces. For example, we prove that the pizza quantity of the ball centered at $a$ having radius $R\geq\|a\|$ vanishes for a Coxeter arrangement $\mathcal{H}$ with $|\mathcal{H}|-n$ an even positive integer. We also prove the Pizza Theorem for the surface volume: When $\mathcal{H}$ is a Coxeter arrangement and $|\mathcal{H}| - n$ is a nonnegative even integer, for an $n$-dimensional ball the alternating sum of the $(n-1)$-dimensional surface volumes of the regions is equal to zero.
Sylow branching coefficients and a conjecture of Malle and Navarro
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that a finite group $G$ has a normal Sylow $p$-subgroup $P$ if, and only if, every irreducible character of $G$ appearing in the permutation character $({\bf 1}_P)^G$ with multiplicity coprime to $p$ has degree coprime to $p$. This confirms a prediction by Malle and Navarro from 2012. Our proof of the above result depends on a reduction to simple groups and ultimately on a combinatorial analysis of the properties of Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups.

Quantitative twisted patterns in positive density subsets
We make quantitative improvements to recently obtained results on the structure of the image of a large difference set under certain quadratic forms and other homogeneous polynomials. Previous proofs used deep results of Benoist-Quint on random walks in certain subgroups of $\operatorname{SL}_r(\mathbb{Z})$ (the symmetry groups of these quadratic forms) that were not of a quantitative nature. Our new observation relies on noticing that rather than studying random walks, one can obtain more quantitative results by considering polynomial orbits of these group actions that are not contained in cosets of submodules of $\mathbb{Z}^r$ of small index. Our main new technical tool is a uniform Furstenberg-Sárközy theorem that holds for a large class of polynomials not necessarily vanishing at zero, which may be of independent interest and is derived from a density increment argument and Hua's bound on polynomial exponential sums.
On multipartite derangement graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite transitive permutation group $G\leq \operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$, with $|Ω|\geq 2$, the derangement graph $Γ_G$ of $G$ is the Cayley graph $\operatorname{Cay}(G,\operatorname{Der}(G))$, where $\operatorname{Der}(G)$ is the set of all derangements of $G$. Meagher et al. [On triangles in derangement graphs, {\it J. Combin. Theory Ser. A}, 180:105390, 2021] recently proved that $\operatorname{Sym}(2)$ acting on $\{1,2\}$ is the only transitive group whose derangement graph is bipartite and any transitive group of degree at least three has a triangle in its derangement graph. They also showed that there exist transitive groups whose derangement graphs are complete multipartite. This paper gives two new families of transitive groups with complete multipartite derangement graphs. In addition, we prove that if $p$ is an odd prime and $G$ is a transitive group of degree $2p$, then the independence number of $Γ_{G}$ is at most twice the size of a point-stabilizer of $G$.

The Stembridge Equality for Skew Stable Grothendieck Polynomials and Skew Dual Stable Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Schur polynomials $s_λ$ are essential in understanding the representation theory of the general linear group. They also describe the cohomology ring of the Grassmannians. For $ρ= (n, n-1, \dots, 1)$ a staircase shape and $μ\subseteq ρ$ a subpartition, the Stembridge equality states that $s_{ρ/μ} = s_{ρ/μ^T}$. This equality provides information about the symmetry of the cohomology ring. The stable Grothendieck polynomials $G_λ$, and the dual stable Grothendieck polynomials $g_λ$, developed by Buch, Lam, and Pylyavskyy, are variants of the Schur polynomials and describe the $K$-theory of the Grassmannians. Using the Hopf algebra structure of the ring of symmetric functions and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule, we prove that $G_{ρ/μ} = G_{ρ/μ^T}$ and $g_{ρ/μ} = g_{ρ/μ^T}$, the analogues of the Stembridge equality for the skew stable and skew dual stable Grothendieck polynomials.

The Non-Existence of Block-Transitive Subspace Designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $q$ be a prime power and $V\cong{\mathbb F}_q^n$. A $t$-$(n,k,λ)_q$ design, or simply a subspace design, is a pair ${\mathcal D}=(V,{\mathcal B})$, where ${\mathcal B}$ is a subset of the set of all $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$, with the property that each $t$-dimensional subspace of $V$ is contained in precisely $λ$ elements of ${\mathcal B}$. Subspace designs are the $q$-analogues of balanced incomplete block designs. Such a design is called block-transitive if its automorphism group ${\rm Aut}({\mathcal D})$ acts transitively on ${\mathcal B}$. It is shown here that if $t\geq 2$ and ${\mathcal D}$ is a block-transitive $t$-$(n,k,λ)_q$ design then ${\mathcal D}$ is trivial, that is, ${\mathcal B}$ is the set of all $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$.

The Embedded Homology of Hypergraph Pairs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we generalize the embedded homology groups of hypergraphs initially given in [S. Bressan, J. Li, S. Ren, and J. Wu, The embedded homology of hypergraphs and applications, Asian J. Math. 23(3)(2019) 479-500] and study the relative embedded homology groups of hypergraph pairs. We prove some long exact sequences as well as a Mayer-Vietoris sequence for the relative embedded homology groups of hypergraph pairs. Moreover, we briefly discuss the two-dimensional persistence for the relative embedded homology groups of hypergraph pairs.
Normal Cayley digraphs of cyclic groups with CI-property
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Cayley (di)graph $Cay(G,S)$ of a group $G$ with respect to a subset $S$ of $G$ is called normal if the right regular representation of $G$ is a normal subgroup in the full automorphism group of $Cay(G,S)$, and is called a CI-(di)graph if for every $T\subseteq G$, $Cay(G,S)\cong Cay(G,T)$ implies that there is $σ\in Aut(G)$ such that $S^σ=T$. We call a group $G$ a NDCI-group if all normal Cayley digraphs of $G$ are CI-digraphs, and a NCI-group if all normal Cayley graphs of $G$ are CI-graphs, respectively. In this paper, we prove that a cyclic group of order $n$ is a NDCI-group if and only if $8\nmid n$, and is a NCI-group if and only if either $n=8$ or $8\nmid n$.

A note on invariable generation of nonsolvable permutation groups
We prove a result on the asymptotic proportion of randomly chosen pairs of permutations in the symmetric group $S_n$ which "invariably" generate a nonsolvable subgroup, i.e., whose cycle structures cannot possibly both occur in the same solvable subgroup of $S_n$. As an application, we obtain that for a large degree "random" integer polynomial $f$, reduction modulo two different primes can be expected to suffice to prove the nonsolvability of $Gal(f/\mathbb{Q})$.
On a representation of the automorphism group of a graph in a unimodular group
We investigate a representation of the automorphism group of a connected graph $X$ in the group of unimodular matrices $U_β$ of dimension $β$, where $β$ is the Betti number of graph $X$. We classify the graphs for which the automorphism group does not embed into $U_β$. It follows that if $X$ has no pendant vertices and $X$ is not a simple cycle, then the representation is faithful and $\mathrm{Aut}\,X$ acts faithfully on $H_1(X,\mathbb{Z})$. The latter statement can be viewed as a discrete analogue of a classical Hurwitz's theorem on Riemann surfaces of genera greater than one.

Statistical Enumeration of Groups by Double Cosets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $H$ and $K$ be subgroups of a finite group $G$. Pick $g \in G$ uniformly at random. We study the distribution induced on double cosets. Three examples are treated in detail: 1) $H = K = $ the Borel subgroup in $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. This leads to new theorems for Mallows measure on permutations and new insights into the LU matrix factorization. 2) The double cosets of the hyperoctahedral group inside $S_{2n}$, which leads to new applications of the Ewens's sampling formula of mathematical genetics. 3) Finally, if $H$ and $K$ are parabolic subgroups of $S_n$, the double cosets are `contingency tables', studied by statisticians for the past 100 years.

A graphical algorithm for the integration of monomials in the Chow ring of the moduli space of stable marked curves of genus zero
The Chow group of zero cycles in the moduli space of stable pointed curves of genus zero is isomorphic to the integer additive group. Let $M$ be monomial in this Chow group. If no two factors of $M$ fulfill a particular quadratic relation, then the monomial can be represented equivalently by a specific tree; otherwise, $M$ is mapped to zero under the stated isomorphism. Starting from this tree representation, we introduce a graphical algorithm for computing the corresponding integer for $M$ under the aforementioned isomorphism. The algorithm is linear with respect to the size of the tree.

Geometry of Random Cayley Graphs of Abelian Groups
Published in Ann. Appl. Probab. 33(5): 3520-3562 (October 2023) • View PublicationBIB
Consider the random Cayley graph of a finite Abelian group $G$ with respect to $k$ generators chosen uniformly at random, with $1 \ll \log k \ll \log |G|$. Draw a vertex $U \sim \operatorname{Unif}(G)$. We show that the graph distance $\operatorname{dist}(\mathsf{id},U)$ from the identity to $U$ concentrates at a particular value $M$, which is the minimal radius of a ball in $\mathbb Z^k$ of cardinality at least $|G|$, under mild conditions. In other words, the distance from the identity for all but $o(|G|)$ of the elements of $G$ lies in the interval $[M - o(M), M + o(M)]$. In the regime $k \gtrsim \log |G|$, we show that the diameter of the graph is also asymptotically $M$. In the spirit of a conjecture of Aldous and Diaconis (1985), this $M$ depends only on $k$ and $|G|$, not on the algebraic structure of $G$. Write $d(G)$ for the minimal size of a generating subset of $G$. We prove that the order of the spectral gap is $|G|^{-2/k}$ when $k - d(G) \asymp k$ and $|G|$ lies in a density-$1$ subset of $\mathbb N$ or when $k - 2 d(G) \asymp k$. This extends, for Abelian groups, a celebrated result of Alon and Roichman (1994). The aforementioned results all hold with high probability over the random Cayley graph.

Factorizations of Complete Multipartite Hypergraphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 340, Issue 2, 2017, Pages 46-50 • View PublicationBIB
In a mathematics workshop with $mn$ mathematicians from $n$ different areas, each area consisting of $m$ mathematicians, we want to create a collaboration network. For this purpose, we would like to schedule daily meetings between groups of size three, so that (i) two people of the same area meet one person of another area, (ii) each person has exactly $r$ meeting(s) each day, and (iii) each pair of people of the same area have exactly $λ$ meeting(s) with each person of another area by the end of the workshop. Using hypergraph amalgamation-detachment, we prove a more general theorem. In particular we show that above meetings can be scheduled if: $3 \ | \ rm$, $2 \ | \ rnm$ and $r \ | \ 3λ(n-1)\binom{m}{2}$. This result can be viewed as an analogue of Baranyai's theorem on factorizations of complete multipartite hypergraphs.
