Powers in the wreath product of $G$ with $S_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we compute powers in the wreath product $G\wr S_n$, for any finite group $G$. For $r\geq 2$, a prime, consider $ω_r: G\wr S_n\to G\wr S_n$ defined by $g \mapsto g^r$. Let $P_{r}(G\wr S_n)=\frac{|ω_r(G\wr S_n)|}{|G|^n n!}$, be the probability that a randomly chosen element in $G\wr S_n$ is a $r^{th}$ power. We prove, $P_r(G\wr S_{n+1})=P_r(G\wr S_n)$ for all $n\not \equiv -1(\text{mod } r)$ if, order of $G$ is coprime to $r$. We also give a formula for the number of conjugacy classes that are $r^{th}$ powers in $G\wr S_n$.

Shi variety corresponding to an affine Weyl group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $W$ be an irreducible Weyl group and $W_a$ its affine Weyl group. In this article we show that there exists a bijection between $W_a$ and the integral points of an affine variety, denoted $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, which we call the Shi variety of $W_a$. In order to do so, we use Jian-Yi Shi's characterization of alcoves in affine Weyl groups. We then study this variety further. We highlight combinatorial properties of the irreducible components of $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$ and we show how they are related to a fundamental parallelepiped $P_{\mathcal{H}}$.

A general Chevalley formula for semi-infinite flag manifolds and quantum K-theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a Chevalley formula for an arbitrary weight for the torus-equivariant $K$-group of semi-infinite flag manifolds, which is expressed in terms of the quantum alcove model. As an application, we prove the Chevalley formula for an anti-dominant fundamental weight for the (small) torus-equivariant quantum $K$-theory $QK_{T}(G/B)$ of an (ordinary) flag manifold $G/B$; this has been a longstanding conjecture about the multiplicative structure of $QK_{T}(G/B)$. In type $A_{n-1}$, we prove that the so-called quantum Grothendieck polynomials indeed represent (opposite) Schubert classes in the (non-equivariant) quantum $K$-theory $QK(SL_{n}/B)$; we also obtain very explicit information about the coefficients in the respective Chevalley formula.

Quantum mechanics of bipartite ribbon graphs: Integrality, Lattices and Kronecker coefficients
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 6 (2023) no. 2, pp. 547-594 • View PublicationBIB
We define solvable quantum mechanical systems on a Hilbert space spanned by bipartite ribbon graphs with a fixed number of edges. The Hilbert space is also an associative algebra, where the product is derived from permutation group products. The existence and structure of this Hilbert space algebra has a number of consequences. The algebra product, which can be expressed in terms of integer ribbon graph reconnection coefficients, is used to define solvable Hamiltonians with eigenvalues expressed in terms of normalized characters of symmetric group elements and degeneracies given in terms of Kronecker coefficients, which are tensor product multiplicities of symmetric group representations. The square of the Kronecker coefficient for a triple of Young diagrams is shown to be equal to the dimension of a sub-lattice in the lattice of ribbon graphs. This leads to an answer to the long-standing question of a combinatoric interpretation of the Kronecker coefficients. As an avenue to explore quantum supremacy and its implications for computational complexity theory, we outline experiments to detect non-vanishing Kronecker coefficients for hypothetical quantum realizations/simulations of these quantum systems. The correspondence between ribbon graphs and Belyi maps leads to an interpretation of these quantum mechanical systems in terms of quantum membrane world-volumes interpolating between string geometries.

Rainbow Solutions to the Sidon Equation in Cyclic Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a coloring of group elements, a rainbow solution to an equation is a solution whose every element is assigned a different color. The rainbow number of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ for an equation $eq$, denoted $rb(\mathbb{Z}_n,eq)$, is the smallest number of colors $r$ such that every exact $r$-coloring of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ admits a rainbow solution to the equation $eq$. We prove that for every exact $4$-coloring of $\mathbb{Z}_p$, where $p\geq 3$ is prime, there exists a rainbow solution to the Sidon equation $x_1+x_2=x_3+x_4$. Furthermore, we determine the rainbow number of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ for the Sidon equation.

Small doubling in cyclic groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a comprehensive description of the sets $A$ in finite cyclic groups such that $|2A|<\frac94|A|$; namely, we show that any set with this property is densely contained in a (one-dimensional) coset progression. This improves earlier results of Deshouillers-Freiman and Balasubramanian-Pandey.

Let $W^c(A_n)$ be the set of fully commutative elements of the Coxeter group $W(A_n)$. Let $$ a_n(q)= \sum_{w \in W^c(A_n)} q^{l(w)} . $$ We compute $a_n(q)$.

Strongly separable matrices for nonadaptive combinatorial group testing
Published • View PublicationBIB
In nonadaptive combinatorial group testing (CGT), it is desirable to identify a small set of up to $d$ defectives from a large population of $n$ items with as few tests (i.e. large rate) and efficient identifying algorithm as possible. In the literature, $d$-disjunct matrices ($d$-DM) and $\bar{d}$-separable matrices ($\bar{d}$-SM) are two classical combinatorial structures having been studied for several decades. It is well-known that a $d$-DM provides a more efficient identifying algorithm than a $\bar{d}$-SM, while a $\bar{d}$-SM could have a larger rate than a $d$-DM. In order to combine the advantages of these two structures, in this paper, we introduce a new notion of \emph{strongly $d$-separable matrix} ($d$-SSM) for nonadaptive CGT and show that a $d$-SSM has the same identifying ability as a $d$-DM, but much weaker requirements than a $d$-DM. Accordingly, the general bounds on the largest rate of a $d$-SSM are established. Moreover, by the random coding method with expurgation, we derive an improved lower bound on the largest rate of a $2$-SSM which is much higher than the best known result of a $2$-DM.

Vertex-transitive graphs with local action the symmetric group on ordered pairs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a finite, connected and simple graph $Γ$ that admits a vertex-transitive group of automorphisms $G$. Under the assumption that, for all $x \in V(Γ)$, the local action $G_x^{Γ(x)}$ is the action of $\mathrm{Sym}(n)$ on ordered pairs, we show that the group $G_x^{[3]}$, the pointwise stabiliser of a ball of radius three around $x$, is trivial.
Geometry and symmetry in biochemical reaction systems
Published in Theory in Biosciences (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Complex systems of intracellular biochemical reactions have a central role in regulating cell identities and functions. Biochemical reaction systems are typically studied using the language and tools of graph theory. However, graph representations only describe pairwise interactions between molecular species, and so are not well suited to modelling complex sets of reactions that may involve numerous reactants and/or products. Here we make use of a recently-developed hypergraph theory of chemical reactions that naturally allows for higher-order interactions to explore the geometry and quantify functional redundancy in biochemical reactions systems. Our results constitute a general theory of automorphisms for oriented hypergraphs and describe the effect of automorphism group structure on hypergraph Laplacian spectra.
$3$-setwise intersecting families of the symmetric group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two positive integers $n\geq 3$ and $t\leq n$, the permutations $σ,π\in \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ are $t$-setwise intersecting if they agree (setwise) on a $t$-subset of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. A family $\mathcal{F} \subset \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ is $t$-setwise intersecting if any two permutations of $\mathcal{F}$ are $t$-setwise intersecting. Ellis [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 119(4), 825--849, 2012] conjectured that if $t\leq n$ and $\mathcal{F} \subset \operatorname{Sym}(n)$ is a $t$-setwise intersecting family, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq t!(n-t)!$ and equality holds only if $\mathcal{F}$ is a coset of a setwise stablizer of a $t$-subset of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. In this paper, we prove that if $n\geq 11$ and $\mathcal{F}$ is $3$-setwise intersecting, then $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 6(n-3)!$. Moreover, we prove that the characteristic vector of a $3$-setwise intersecting family of maximum size lies in the sum of the eigenspaces induced by the permutation module of $\operatorname{Sym}(n)$ acting on the $3$-subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$.

Gröbner geometry for skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties
Published in Adv. Math. 405 (2022), 108488 • View PublicationBIB
Matrix Schubert varieties are the closures of the orbits of $B\times B$ acting on all $n\times n$ matrices, where $B$ is the group of invertible lower triangular matrices. Extending work of Fulton, Knutson and Miller identified a Gröbner basis for the prime ideals of these varieties. They also showed that the corresponding initial ideals are Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes, and derived a related primary decomposition in terms of reduced pipe dreams. These results lead to a geometric proof of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for a Schubert polynomial, among many other applications. We define skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties to be the nonempty intersections of matrix Schubert varieties with the subspace of skew-symmetric matrices. In analogy with Knutson and Miller's work, we describe a natural generating set for the prime ideals of these varieties. We then compute a related Gröbner basis. Using these results, we identify a primary decomposition for the corresponding initial ideals involving certain fpf-involution pipe dreams. We show that these initial ideals are likewise the Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes. As an application, we give a geometric proof of an explicit generating function for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. Our methods differ from Knutson and Miller's and can be used to give new proofs of some of their results, as we explain at the end of this article.

Zero $A$-paths and the Erdős-Pósa property
Let $Γ$ be an Abelian group. In this paper I characterize the $A$-paths of weight $0\inΓ$ that have the Erdős-Pósa property. Using this in an auxiliary graph, one can also easily characterize the $A$-paths of weight $γ\inΓ$ that have the Erdős-Pósa property. These results also extend to long paths, that is paths of some minimum length. A structural result on zero walls with non-zero linkages will be proven as a means to prove the main result of this paper. This immediately implies that zero cycles with respect to an Abelian group $Γ$ have the Erdős-Pósa property.
Square percolation and the threshold for quadratic divergence in random right-angled Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $Γ$, its auxiliary \emph{square-graph} $\square(Γ)$ is the graph whose vertices are the non-edges of $Γ$ and whose edges are the pairs of non-edges which induce a square (i.e., a $4$-cycle) in $Γ$. We determine the threshold edge-probability $p=p_c(n)$ at which the Erd{\H o}s--Rényi random graph $Γ=Γ_{n,p}$ begins to asymptotically almost surely have a square-graph with a connected component whose squares together cover all the vertices of $Γ_{n,p}$. We show $p_c(n)=\sqrt{\sqrt{6}-2}/\sqrt{n}$, a polylogarithmic improvement on earlier bounds on $p_c(n)$ due to Hagen and the authors. As a corollary, we determine the threshold $p=p_c(n)$ at which the random right-angled Coxeter group $W_{Γ_{n,p}}$ asymptotically almost surely becomes strongly algebraically thick of order $1$ and has quadratic divergence.

Flip actions and Gelfand pairs for affine Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Several combinatorial actions of the affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ on triangulations, trees, words and permutations are compared. Addressing a question of David Vogan, we show that, modulo a natural involution, these permutation representations are multiplicity-free. The proof uses a general construction of Gelfand subgroups in the affine Weyl groups of types $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ and $\widetilde{B}_n$.

Pipe dreams for Schubert polynomials of the classical groups
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 107 (2023) 103613 • View PublicationBIB
Schubert polynomials for the classical groups were defined by S.Billey and M.Haiman in 1995; they are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in a full flag variety of a classical group. We provide a combinatorial description for these polynomials, as well as their double versions, by introducing analogues of pipe dreams, or RC-graphs, for the Weyl groups of the classical types.

Riordan Groups in higher Dimensions
The classical Riordan groups associated to a given commutative ring are groups of infinite matrices (called Riordan arrays) associated to pairs of formal power series in one variable. The Fundamental Theorem of Riordan Arrays relates matrix multiplication to two group actions on such series, namely formal (convolution) multiplication and formal composition. We define the analogous Riordan groups involving formal power series in several variables, and establish the analogue of the Fundamental Theorem in that context. We discuss related groups of Laurent series and pose some questions.

Cut Bounds for Some Weighted Graphs
In communication field, an important issue is to group users and base stations to as many as possible subnetworks satisfying certain interference constraints. These problems are usually formulated as a graph partition problems which minimize some forms of graph cut. Previous research already gave some results about the cut bounds for unweighted regular graph. In this paper, we prove a result about the lower bound for weighted graphs that have some regular properties and show similar results for more general case.

The quiver of an affine monoid
Published • View PublicationBIB
If $R$ is a finite commutative ring, then the affine monoid of $R$ is the monoid of all affine mappings $x\mapsto ax+b$ on $R$. Alternatively, it is the semidirect product of the multiplicative monoid of $R$ with the additive group of $R$. In this paper we compute the Gabriel quiver of the complex algebra of the affine monoid of any finite commutative ring.
