For $G$ a finite abelian group, we study the properties of general equivalence relations on $G_n=G^n\rtimes \SG_n$, the wreath product of $G$ with the symmetric group $\SG_n$, also known as the $G$-coloured symmetric group. We show that under certain conditions, some equivalence relations give rise to subalgebras of $\k G_n$ as well as graded connected Hopf subalgebras of $\bigoplus_{n\ge o} \k G_n$. In particular we construct a $G$-coloured peak subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra (or $G$-coloured descent algebra). We show that the direct sum of the $G$-coloured peak algebras is a Hopf algebra. We also have similar results for a $G$-colouring of the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebras of planar binary trees. For many of the equivalence relations under study, we obtain a functor from the category of finite abelian groups to the category of graded connected Hopf algebras. We end our investigation by describing a Hopf endomorphism of the $G$-coloured descent Hopf algebra whose image is the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra. We outline a theory of combinatorial $G$-coloured Hopf algebra for which the $G$-coloured quasi-symmetric Hopf algebra and the graded dual to the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra are central objects.

Combinatorics, in particular graph theory, has a rich history of being a domain of successful applications of tools from other areas of mathematics, including topological methods. Here, we survey the study of the Hom-complexes, and the ways these can be used to obtain lower bounds for the chromatic numbers of graphs, presented in a recent series of papers \cite{BK03a,BK03b,BK03c,CK1,CK2,K4,K5}.
The structural theory is developed and put in the historical context, culminating in the proof of the Lovász Conjecture, which can be stated as follows:
For a graph G, such that the complex Hom(C_{2r+1},G) is k-connected for some integers r>0 and k>-2, we have χ(G)>k+3.
Beyond the, more customary in this area, cohomology groups, the algebro-topological concepts involved are spectral sequences and Stiefel-Whitney characteristic classes. Complete proofs are included for all the new results appearing in this survey for the first time.
Amenability of Universal 2-Grigorchuk group
We consider the universal Grigorchuk 2-group, i.e., the group such that every Grigorchuk 2-group is a quotient. We show that this group has a nice universal representation in the group of all functions f:{0,1,2}^N --> Aut(T_2), where T_2 is a group of automorphism of the binary tree. Finally, we prove that this universal Grigorchuk 2-group is amenable. The proof is an application of the ``Munchhausen trick'' developed by V. Kaimanovich.

These lecture notes for the IAS/Park City Graduate Summer School in Geometric Combinatorics (July 2004) provide an overview of root systems, generalized associahedra, and the combinatorics of clusters.
Lectures 1-2 cover classical material: root systems, finite reflection groups, and the Cartan-Killing classification. Lectures 3-4 provide an introduction to cluster algebras from a combinatorial perspective. Lecture 5 is devoted to related topics in enumerative combinatorics.
Resonance varieties, admissible line combinatorics and combinatorial pencils
In this paper we define the combinatorial analogous of a pencil, and show its relationship with the concept of admissibility. Such an object is usefull to study the isomorphisms between fundamental groups of the complements of line arrangement with the same combinatorial type. This definition generalizes the idea of net given by Yuzvinsky and others. The main theorem in this paper states that there is a correspondence between components of the resonance variety and combinatorial pencils.
On the excedance number of colored permutation groups
We generalize the results of Ksavrelof and Zeng about the multidistribution of the excedance number of $S_n$ with some natural parameters to the colored permutation group and to the Coxeter group of type $D$. We define two different orders on these groups which induce two different excedance numbers. Surprisingly, in the case of the colored permutation group, we get the same generalized formulas for both orders.

We construct a quotient ring of the ring of diagonal coinvariants of the complex reflection group $W=G(m,p,n)$ and determine its graded character. This generalises a result of Gordon for Coxeter groups. The proof uses a study of category $\cO$ for the rational Cherednik algebra of $W$.
Automorphism groups of maps, surfaces and Smarandache geometries
A combinatorial map is a connected topological graph cellularly embedded in a surface. This monograph concentrates on the automorphism group of a map, which is related to the automorphism group of a Klein surface and a Smarandache manifold, also applied to the enumeration of unrooted maps on orientable and non-orientable surfaces. A number of results for the enumeration of unrooted maps underlying a graph on orientable and non-orientable surfaces are discovered. An elementary classification for the closed s-manifolds is found. Open problems related the combinatorial maps with the differential geometry, Riemann geometry and Smarandache geometries are also presented in this monograph for the further application of the combinatorial maps to the classical mathematics.

Kerov considered the normalized characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group, evaluated on a cycle, as a polynomial in free cumulants. Biane has proved that this polynomial has integer coefficients, and made various conjectures. Recently, Sniady has proved Biane's conjectured explicit form for the first family of nontrivial terms in this polynomial. In this paper, we give an explicit expression for all terms in Kerov's character polynomials. Our method is through Lagrange inversion.

A famous result of Freiman describes the structure of finite sets A of integers with small doubling property. If |A + A| <= K|A| then A is contained within a multidimensional arithmetic progression of dimension d(K) and size f(K)|A|. Here we prove an analogous statement valid for subsets of an arbitrary abelian group.

We introduce and study a family of simplicial complexes associated to an arbitrary finite root system and a nonnegative integer parameter m. For m=1, our construction specializes to the (simplicial) generalized associahedra or, equivalently, to the cluster complexes for the cluster algebras of finite type.
Our computation of the face numbers and h-vectors of these complexes produces the enumerative invariants defined in other contexts by C.A.Athanasiadis, suggesting links to a host of well studied problems in algebraic combinatorics of finite Coxeter groups, root systems, and hyperplane arrangements.
Recurrences satisfied by the face numbers of our complexes lead to combinatorial algorithms for determining Coxeter-theoretic invariants. That is, starting with a Coxeter diagram of a finite Coxeter group, one can compute the Coxeter number, the exponents, and other classical invariants by a recursive procedure that only uses most basic graph-theoretic concepts applied to the input diagram.
In types A and B, we rediscover the constructions and results obtained by E.Tzanaki <math.CO/0501100>.
On Degrees in the Hasse Diagram of the Strong Bruhat Order
For a permutation $π$ in the symmetric group $S_n$ let the {\it total degree} be its valency in the Hasse diagram of the strong Bruhat order on $S_n$, and let the {\it down degree} be the number of permutations which are covered by $π$ in the strong Bruhat order. The maxima of the total degree and the down degree and their values at a random permutation are computed. Proofs involve variants of a classical theorem of Turán from extremal graph theory.
The Moments of the Block Operators in a Group von Neumann Algebra
In this paper, we will compute the moments of the block operators, induced by the generators of the group, in a group von Neumann algebra and we will observe the identically distributedness.

We consider additive codes over GF(4) that are self-dual with respect to the Hermitian trace inner product. Such codes have a well-known interpretation as quantum codes and correspond to isotropic systems. It has also been shown that these codes can be represented as graphs, and that two codes are equivalent if and only if the corresponding graphs are equivalent with respect to local complementation and graph isomorphism. We use these facts to classify all codes of length up to 12, where previously only all codes of length up to 9 were known. We also classify all extremal Type II codes of length 14. Finally, we find that the smallest Type I and Type II codes with trivial automorphism group have length 9 and 12, respectively.

We compute $E_G (\prod_i \tr(g^{λ_i}))$, where $G=Sp(2n)$ or $SO(m) (m=2n, 2n+1)$ with Haar measure. This was first obtained by Persi Diaconis and Mehrdad Shahshahani, but our proof is more self-contained and gives a combinatorial description for the answer. We also consider how averages of general symmetric functions $E_G f_n$ are affected when we introduce a Weyl character $χ^G_λ$ into the integrand.
We show that the value of $E_G χ^G_λf_n / E_G f_n$ approaches a constant for large $n$. More surprisingly, the ratio we obtain only changes with $f_n$ and $λ$ and is independent of the Cartan type of $G$. Even in the unitary case, Daniel Bump and Persi Diaconis have obtained the same ratio. Finally, those ratios can be combined with asymptotics for $E_G f_n$ due to Kurt Johansson and provide asymptotics for $E_G χ^G_λf_n$.
On some noncommutative algebras related to K-theory of flag varieties, part I
For any Lie algebra of classical type or type $G_2$ we define a $K$-theoretic analog of Dunkl's elements, the so-called truncated {\it Ruijsenaars-Schneider-Macdonald elements}, $RSM$-elements for short, in the corresponding {\it Yang-Baxter group}, which form a commuting family of elements in the latter. For the root systems of type $A$ we prove that the subalgebra of the {\it bracket algebra} generated by the RSM-elements is isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of the flag variety. In general, we prove that the subalgebra generated by the {\it images} of the RSM-elements in the corresponding {\it Nichols-Woronowicz algebra} is canonically isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of the corresponding flag varieties of classical type or of type $G_2$. In other words, we construct the ``Nichols-Woronowicz algebra model'' for the Grothendieck Calculus on Weyl groups of classical type or type $G_2,$ providing a partial generalization of some recent results by Y. Bazlov. We also give a conjectural description (theorem for type $A$) of a commutative subalgebra generated by the {\it truncated RSM-elements} in the bracket algebra for the classical root systems. Our results provide a proof and generalizations of recent conjecture and result by C. Lenart and A. Yong for the root system of type $A$.
The C-polynomial of a knot

In an earlier paper the first author defined a non-commutative A-polynomial for knots in 3-space, using the colored Jones function. The idea is that the colored Jones function of a knot satisfies a non-trivial linear q-difference equation. Said differently, the colored Jones function of a knot is annihilated by a non-zero ideal of the Weyl algebra which is generalted (after localization) by the non-commutative A-polynomial of a knot.
In that paper, it was conjectured that this polynomial (which has to do with representations of the quantum group U_q(SL_2)) specializes at q=1 to the better known A-polynomial of a knot, which has to do with genuine SL_2(C) representations of the knot complement.
Computing the non-commutative A-polynomial of a knot is a difficult task which so far has been achieved for the two simplest knots. In the present paper, we introduce the C-polynomial of a knot, along with its non-commutative version, and give an explicit computation for all twist knots. In a forthcoming paper, we will use this information to compute the non-commutative A-polynomial of twist knots. Finally, we formulate a number of conjectures relating the A, the C-polynomial and the Alexander polynomial, all confirmed for the class of twist knots.

Let X be a subset of an abelian group and a_1,...,a_h,a'_1,...,a'_h a sequence of 2h elements of X such that a_1 + ... + a_h = a'_1 + ... + a'_h. The set X is a Sidon set of order h if, after renumbering, a_i = a'_i for i = 1,..., h. For k \leq h, the set X is a generalized Sidon set of order (h,k), if, after renumbering, a_i = a'_i for i = 1,..., k. It is proved that if X is a generalized Sidon set of order (2h-1,h-1), then the maximal Sidon sets of order h contained in X have the same cardinality. Moreover, X is a matroid where the independent subsets of X are the Sidon sets of order h.
Distance Configurations of Points in a Plane with a Galois group that is not Soluble
We have conjectured that the constraint equations defined by a generic Laman graph are not soluble by radicals when the graph is 3-connected. We prove that this conjecture follows from the following simpler conjecture: the constraint equations defined by a generic Laman graph are not soluble by radicals if the graph does not contain a proper subgraph which is itself a Laman graph.
Restricted sumsets and a conjecture of Lev

Let A,B,S be finite subsets of an abelian group G. Suppose that the restricted sumset C={a+b: a in A, b in B, and a-b not in S} is nonempty and some c in C can be written as a+b with a in A and b in B in at most m ways. We show that if G is torsion-free or elementary abelian then |C|\geq |A|+|B|-|S| -m. We also prove that |C|\geq |A|+|B|-2|S|-m if the torsion subgroup of G is cyclic. In the case S={0} this provides an advance on a conjecture of Lev.
