Hall-Littlewood polynomials and characters of affine Lie algebras
Published in Advances in Mathematics 285 (2015), 1066-1105 • View PublicationBIB
The Weyl-Kac character formula gives a beautiful closed-form expression for the characters of integrable highest-weight modules of Kac-Moody algebras. It is not, however, a formula that is combinatorial in nature, obscuring positivity. In this paper we show that the theory of Hall-Littlewood polynomials may be employed to prove Littlewood-type combinatorial formulas for the characters of certain highest weight modules of the affine Lie algebras C_n^{(1)}, A_{2n}^{(2)} and D_{n+1}^{(2)}. Through specialisation this yields generalisations for B_n^{(1)}, C_n^{(1)}, A_{2n-1}^{(2)}, A_{2n}^{(2)} and D_{n+1}^{(2)} of Macdonald's identities for powers of the Dedekind eta-function. These generalised eta-function identities include the Rogers-Ramanujan, Andrews-Gordon and Göllnitz-Gordon q-series as special, low-rank cases.

Faces and maximizer subsets of highest weight modules
Published in Journal of Algebra 455 (2016), 32-76 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study general highest weight modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$ over a complex finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We present three formulas for the set of weights of a large family of modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$, which include but are not restricted to all simple modules and all parabolic Verma modules. These formulas are direct and do not involve cancellations, and were not previously known in the literature. Our results extend the notion of the Weyl polytope to general highest weight $\mathfrak{g}$-modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$. We also show that for all simple modules, the convex hull of the weights is a $W_J$-invariant polyhedron for some parabolic subgroup $W_J$. We compute its vertices, faces, and symmetries - more generally, we also do this for all parabolic Verma modules, and for all modules $\mathbb{V}^λ$ with highest weight $λ$ not on a simple root hyperplane. To show our results, we extend the notion of convexity to arbitrary additive subgroups $\mathbb{A} \subset (\mathbb{R},+)$ of coefficients. Our techniques enable us to completely classify "weak $\mathbb{A}$-faces" of the support sets ${\rm wt}(\mathbb{V}^λ)$, in the process extending classical results of Satake, Borel-Tits, Vinberg, and Casselman, as well as modern variants by Chari-Dolbin-Ridenour and Cellini-Marietti, to general highest weight modules.

The Andrews-Olsson identity and Bessenrodt insertion algorithm on Young walls
Published • View PublicationBIB
We extend the Andrews-Olsson identity to two-colored partitions. Regarding the sets of proper Young walls of quantum affine algebras $\g_n=A^{(2)}_{2n}$, $A^{(2)}_{2n-1}$, $B^{(1)}_{n}$, $D^{(1)}_{n}$ and $D^{(2)}_{n+1}$ as the sets of two-colored partitions, the extended Andrews-Olsson identity implies that the generating functions of the sets of reduced Young walls have very simple formulae: \begin{center} $\prod^{\infty}_{i=1}(1+t^i)^{κ_i}$ where $κ_i=0$, $1$ or $2$, and $κ_i$ varies periodically. \end{center} Moreover, we generalize the Bessenrodt's algorithms to prove the extended Andrews-Olsson identity in an alternative way. From these algorithms, we can give crystal structures on certain subsets of pair of strict partitions which are isomorphic to the crystal bases $B(Λ)$ of the level $1$ highest weight modules $V(Λ)$ over $U_q(\g_n)$.

Classical and Signed Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials: Character Multiplicity Inversion by Induction
The famous Kazhdan-Lusztig Conjecture of the 1970s states that the multiplicity of an irreducible composition factor of a Verma module can be computed by evaluating Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials at 1. Thus the character of a Verma module is a linear combination of characters of irreducible highest weight modules where the coefficients in the linear combination are Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at 1. Kazhdan-Lusztig showed that inverting and writing the character of an irreducible highest weight module as a linear combination of characters of Verma modules, the coefficients in the linear combination are also Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at 1, up to a sign. In this paper, we show how to prove Kazhdan-Lusztig's character multiplicity inversion formula by induction using coherent continuation functors. Unitary representations may be identified by determining if characters and signature characters are the same. The signature character of a Verma module may be written as a linear combination of signature characters of irreducible highest weight modules where the coefficients in the linear combination are signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at 1. An analogous argument by induction using coherent continuation functors proves an analogous multiplicity inversion formula for signature characters: the signature character of an irreducible highest weight module is a linear combination of signature characters of Verma modules where the coefficients, up to a sign, are also signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at 1.

Relating Signed Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials and Classical Kazhdan-Lusztig Polynomials
Published in Duke Math. J. 163, no. 11 (2014), 2161-2178 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by studying the Unitary Dual Problem, a variation of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials was defined in [Yee08] which encodes signature information at each level of the Jantzen filtration. These so called signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials may be used to compute the signatures of invariant Hermitian forms on irreducible highest weight modules. The key result of this paper is a simple relationship between signed Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials: signed Kahzdan-Lusztig polynomials are shown to equal classical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials evaluated at $-q$ rather than $q$ and multiplied by a sign. This result has applications to finding the unitary dual for real reductive Lie groups since Harish-Chandra modules may be constructed by applying Zuckerman functors to highest weight modules.

A combinatorial decomposition of higher level Fock spaces
We give a simple characterization of the highest weight vertices in the crystal graph of the level l Fock spaces. This characterization is based on the notion of totally periodic symbols viewed as affine analogues of reverse lattice words classically used in the decomposition of tensor products of fundamental $\mathfrak{sl}_{n}$-modules. This yields a combinatorial decomposition of the Fock spaces in their irreducible components and the branching law for the restriction of the irreducible highest weight $\mathfrak{sl}_{\infty}$-modules to $\hat{\mathfrak{sl}_{e}}$.

Highest weight modules and polarized embeddings of shadow spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let Gamma be the K-shadow space of a spherical building Delta. An embedding V of Gamma is called polarized if it affords all "singular" hyperplanes of Gamma. Suppose that Delta is associated to a Chevalley group G. Then Gamma can be embedded into what we call the Weyl module for G of highest weight lambda_K. It is proved that this module is polarized and that the associated minimal polarized embedding is precisely the irreducible G-module of highest weight lambda_K. In addition a number of general results on polarized embeddings of shadow spaces are proved. The last few sections are devoted to the study of specific shadow spaces, notably minuscule weight geometries, polar grassmannians, and projective flag-grassmannians. The paper is in part expository in nature so as to make this material accessible to a wide audience.

On products of sl_n characters and support containment
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $λ$, $μ$, $ν$ and $ρ$ be dominant weights of $\mathfrak{sl_n}$ satisfying $λ+ μ= ν+ ρ$. Let $V_λ$ denote the highest weight module corresponding to $λ$. Lam, Postnikov, Pylyavskyy conjectured a sufficient condition for $V_λ \otimes V_μ$ to be contained in $V_ν \otimes V_ρ$ as $\mathfrak{sl_n}$-modules. In this note we prove a weaker version of the conjecture. Namely we prove that under the conjectured conditions every irreducible $\mathfrak{sl_n}$-module which appears in the decomposition of $V_λ \otimes V_μ$ does appear in the decomposition of $V_ν \otimes V_ρ$.

A Combinatorial Model for Crystals of Kac-Moody Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible integrable highest weight modules for complex symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. We describe crystal graphs and give a Littlewood-Richardson rule for decomposing tensor products of irreducible representations. The new model is based on the notion of a lambda-chain, which is a chain of positive roots defined by certain interlacing conditions.

A Tensor Product Theorem Related To Perfect Crystals
Published in Journal of Algebra 267 (2003) 212-245 • View PublicationBIB
Kang et al. provided a path realization of the crystal graph of a highest weight module over a quantum affine algebra, as certain semi-infinite tensor products of a single perfect crystal. In this paper, this result is generalized to give a realization of the tensor product of several highest weight modules. The underlying building blocks of the paths are finite tensor products of several perfect crystals. The motivation for this work is an interpretation of fermionic formulas, which arise from the combinatorics of Bethe Ansatz studies of solvable lattice models, as branching functions of affine Lie algebras. It is shown that the conditions for the tensor product theorem are satisfied for coherent families of crystals previously studied by Kang, Kashiwara and Misra, and the coherent family of crystals $\{B^{k,l}\}_{l\ge 1}$ of type $A_n^{(1)}$.

Polyhedral Realizations of Crystal Bases for Integrable Highest Weight Modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a general way of representing the crystal (base) corresponding to the intgrable highest weight modules of quantum Kac-Moody algebras, which is called polyhedral realizations. This is applied to describe explicitly the crystal bases of integrable highest weight modules for arbitrary rank 2 Kac-Moody algebra cases, the classical A_n-case and the affine A^{(1)}_{n-1}-case.
