Bar code for monomial ideals
Published • View PublicationBIB
Aim of this paper is to count $0$-dimensional stable and strongly stable ideals in $2$ and $3$ variables, given their (constant) affine Hilbert polynomial. To do so, we define the Bar Code, a bidimensional structure representing any finite set of terms $M$ and allowing to desume many properties of the corresponding monomial ideal $I$, if $M$ is an order ideal. Then, we use it to give a connection between (strongly) stable monomial ideals and integer partitions, thus allowing to count them via known determinantal formulas.

Extensions of character formulas by the Littlewood decomposition
In 2015, the author proved combinatorially character formulas expressing sums of the (formal) dimensions of irreducible representations of symplectic groups, refining some works of Nekrasov and Okounkov, Han, King, and Westbury. In this article, we obtain generalizations of these character formulas, by using a bijection on integer partitions, namely the Littlewood decomposition, for which we prove new properties. As applications, we derive signed generating functions for subsets of integer partitions, and new hook length formulas.

Limit shapes via bijections
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 28 (2019) 187-240 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the limit shape for several classes of restricted integer partitions, where the restrictions are placed on the part sizes rather than the multiplicities. Our approach utilizes certain classes of bijections which map limit shapes continuously in the plane. We start with bijections outlined previously by the second author, and extend them to include limit shapes with different scaling functions.
Approximately Sampling Elements with Fixed Rank in Graded Posets
Published in Proceedings of the 28th Annual ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA 2017) 1823-1838 • View PublicationBIB
Graded posets frequently arise throughout combinatorics, where it is natural to try to count the number of elements of a fixed rank. These counting problems are often $\#\textbf{P}$-complete, so we consider approximation algorithms for counting and uniform sampling. We show that for certain classes of posets, biased Markov chains that walk along edges of their Hasse diagrams allow us to approximately generate samples with any fixed rank in expected polynomial time. Our arguments do not rely on the typical proofs of log-concavity, which are used to construct a stationary distribution with a specific mode in order to give a lower bound on the probability of outputting an element of the desired rank. Instead, we infer this directly from bounds on the mixing time of the chains through a method we call $\textit{balanced bias}$. A noteworthy application of our method is sampling restricted classes of integer partitions of $n$. We give the first provably efficient Markov chain algorithm to uniformly sample integer partitions of $n$ from general restricted classes. Several observations allow us to improve the efficiency of this chain to require $O(n^{1/2}\log(n))$ space, and for unrestricted integer partitions, expected $O(n^{9/4})$ time. Related applications include sampling permutations with a fixed number of inversions and lozenge tilings on the triangular lattice with a fixed average height.

A robust quantitative local central limit theorem with applications to enumerative combinatorics and random combinatorial structures
A useful heuristic in the understanding of large random combinatorial structures is the Arratia-Tavare principle, which describes an approximation to the joint distribution of component-sizes using independent random variables. The principle outlines conditions under which the total variation distance between the true joint distribution and the approximation should be small, and was successfully exploited by Pittel in the cases of integer partitions and set partitions. We provide sufficient conditions for this principle to be true in a general context, valid for certain discrete probability distributions which are $\textit{perturbed log-concave}$, via a quantitative local central limit theorem. We then use it to generalize some classical asymptotic statistics in combinatorial theory, as well as assert some new ones.

On Stanley's theorem and its Generalizations
In this paper we go on to discuss about Stanley's theorem in Integer partitions. We give two different versions for the proof of the generalization of Stanley's theorem illustrating different techniques that may be applied to profitably understand the underlying structure behind the theorem.

The MacMahon $q$-Catalan is convex
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n\geq2$ be an integer. In this paper, we study the convexity of the so-called MacMahon's $q$-Catalan polynomials $C_n(q)=\frac1{[n+1]_q}\left[ 2n \atop n \right]_q$ as functions of $q$. Along the way, several intermediate results on inequalities are presented including a commentary on the convexity of the generation function for the integer partitions.

Counting Matrices that are Squares
On the math-fun mailing list (7 May 2013), Neil Sloane asked to calculate the number of $n \times n$ matrices with entries in $\{0,1\}$ which are squares of other such matrices. In this paper we analyze the case that the arithmetic is in $\mathbb{F}_{2}$. We follow the dictum of Wilf ("What is an answer?") to derive a "effective" algorithm to count such matrices in much less time than it takes to enumerate them. The algorithm which we use involves the analysis of conjugacy classes of matrices. The restricted integer partitions which arise are counted by the coefficients of one of Ramanujan's mock Theta functions, which we found thanks to Sloane's OEIS (Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences). Let $a_n$ be the number elements of ${\rm Mat}_n(\mathbb{F}_{2})$ which are squares, and $b_n$ be the number of elements of ${\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{F}_{2})$ which are squares. The numerical results strongly suggest that there are constants $α,β> 0$ such that $a_n \sim α2^{n^2}$, $b_n \sim β2^{n^2}$.

Explorations in the theory of partition zeta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and survey results on two families of zeta functions connected to the multiplicative and additive theories of integer partitions. In the case of the multiplicative theory, we provide specialization formulas and results on the analytic continuations of these "partition zeta functions", find unusual formulas for the Riemann zeta function, prove identities for multiple zeta values, and see that some of the formulas allow for $p$-adic interpolation. The second family we study was anticipated by Manin and makes use of modular forms, functions which are intimately related to integer partitions by universal polynomial recurrence relations. We survey recent work on these zeta polynomials, including the proof of their Riemann Hypothesis.
Restricted growth function patterns and statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
A restricted growth function (RGF) of length n is a sequence w = w_1 w_2 ... w_n of positive integers such that w_1 = 1 and w_i is at most 1 + max{w_1,..., w_{i-1}} for i at least 2. RGFs are of interest because they are in natural bijection with set partitions of {1, 2, ..., n}. RGF w avoids RGF v if there is no subword of w which standardizes to v. We study the generating functions sum_{w in R_n(v)} q^{st(w)} where R_n(v) is the set of RGFs of length n which avoid v and st(w) is any of the four fundamental statistics on RGFs defined by Wachs and White. These generating functions exhibit interesting connections with integer partitions and two-colored Motzkin paths, as well as noncrossing and nonnesting set partitions.

A countdown process, with application to the rank of random matrices over $\mathbb F_q(n)$
Motivated by the work of Fulman and Goldstein, comparing the distribution of the corank of random matrices in $\mathbb F_q[n]$ with the limit distribution as $n \to \infty$, we define a countdown process, driven by independent geometric random variables related to random integer partitions. Analysis of this process leads to sharper bounds on the total variation distance.

Partitions with fixed largest hook length
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a recent paper of Straub, we study the distribution of integer partitions according to the length of their largest hook, instead of the usual statistic, namely the size of the partitions. We refine Straub's analogue of Euler's Odd-Distinct partition theorem, derive a generalization in the spirit of Alder's conjecture, as well as a curious analogue of the first Rogers-Ramanujan identity. Moreover, we obtain a partition theorem that is the counterpart of Euler's pentagonal number theory in this setting, and connect it with the Rogers-Fine identity. We concludes with some congruence properties.

Asymptotic joint distribution of the extremities of a random Young diagram and enumeration of graphical partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
An integer partition of $n$ is a decreasing sequence of positive integers that add up to $[n]$. Back in $1979$ Macdonald posed a question about the limit value of the probability that two partitions chosen uniformly at random, and independently of each other, are comparable in terms of the dominance order. In $1982$ Wilf conjectured that the uniformly random partition is a size-ordered degree sequence of a simple graph with the limit probability $0$. In $1997$ we showed that in both, seemingly unrelated, cases the limit probabilities are indeed zero, but our method left open the problem of convergence rates. The main result in this paper is that each of the probabilities is $e^{-0.11\log n/\log\log n}$, at most. A key element of the argument is a local limit theorem, with convergence rate, for the joint distribution of the $[n^{1/4-\varepsilon}]$ tallest columns and the $[n^{1/4-\varepsilon}]$ longest rows of the Young diagram representing the random partition.

On symmetries in phylogenetic trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Billey et al. [arXiv:1507.04976] have recently discovered a surprisingly simple formula for the number $a_n(σ)$ of leaf-labelled rooted non-embedded binary trees (also known as phylogenetic trees) with $n\geq 1$ leaves, fixed (for the relabelling action) by a given permutation $σ\in\frak{S}_n$. Denoting by $λ\vdash n$ the integer partition giving the sizes of the cycles of $σ$ in non-increasing order, they show by a guessing/checking approach that if $λ$ is a binary partition (it is known that $a_n(σ)=0$ otherwise), then $$ a_n(σ)=\prod_{i=2}^{\ell(λ)}(2(λ_i+\cdots+λ_{\ell(λ)})-1), $$ and they derive from it a formula and random generation procedure for tanglegrams (and more generally for tangled chains). Our main result is a combinatorial proof of the formula, which yields a simplification of the random sampler for tangled chains.

A Combinatorial Approach to the Symmetry of $q,t$-Catalan Numbers
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math (SIDMA). 32 (2018) no.1, 191--232 • View PublicationBIB
The \emph{$q,t$-Catalan numbers} $C_n(q,t)$ are polynomials in $q$ and $t$ that reduce to the ordinary Catalan numbers when $q=t=1$. These polynomials have important connections to representation theory, algebraic geometry, and symmetric functions. Haglund and Haiman discovered combinatorial formulas for $C_n(q,t)$ as weighted sums of Dyck paths (or equivalently, integer partitions contained in a staircase shape). This paper undertakes a combinatorial investigation of the joint symmetry property $C_n(q,t)=C_n(t,q)$. We conjecture some structural decompositions of Dyck objects into "mutually opposite" subcollections that lead to a bijective explanation of joint symmetry in certain cases. A key new idea is the construction of infinite chains of partitions that are independent of $n$ but induce the joint symmetry for all $n$ simultaneously. Using these methods, we prove combinatorially that for $0\leq k\leq 9$ and all $n$, the terms in $C_n(q,t)$ of total degree $\binom{n}{2}-k$ have the required symmetry property.

Arithmetic of partitions and the $q$-bracket operator
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and find many theorems of classical number theory arise as particular cases of extremely general combinatorial structure laws. We then see that the relatively recently-defined $q$-bracket operator $\left<f\right>_q$, studied by Bloch-Okounkov, Zagier, and others for its quasimodular properties, plays a deep role in the theory of partitions, quite apart from questions of modularity. Moreover, we give an explicit formula for the coefficients of $\left<f\right>_q$ for any function $f$ defined on partitions, and, conversely, give a partition-theoretic function whose $q$-bracket is a given power series.

Polynomiality of some hook-content summations for doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2009, the first author proved the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula on hook lengths for integer partitions by using an identity of Macdonald in the framework of type $\widetilde A$ affine root systems, and conjectured that some summations over the set of all partitions of size $n$ are always polynomials in $n$. This conjecture was generalized and proved by Stanley. Recently, Pétréolle derived two Nekrasov-Okounkov type formulas for $\widetilde C$ and $\widetilde C\,\check{}$ which involve doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions. Inspired by all those previous works, we establish the polynomiality of some hook-content summations for doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions.

Enumerations of Permutations Simultaneously Avoiding a Vincular and a Covincular Pattern of Length 3
Vincular and covincular patterns are generalizations of classical patterns allowing restrictions on the indices and values of the occurrences in a permutation. In this paper we study the integer sequences arising as the enumerations of permutations simultaneously avoiding a vincular and a covincular pattern, both of length 3, with at most one restriction. We see familiar sequences, such as the Catalan and Motzkin numbers, but also some previously unknown sequences which have close links to other combinatorial objects such as lattice paths and integer partitions. Where possible we include a generating function for the enumeration. One of the cases considered settles a conjecture by Pudwell (2010) on the Wilf-equivalence of barred patterns. We also give an alternative proof of the classic result that permutations avoiding 123 are counted by the Catalan numbers.
