A combinatorial proof on partition function parity
One of the most basic results concerning the number-theoretic properties of the partition function $p(n)$ is that $p(n)$ takes each value of parity infinitely often. This statement was first proved by Kolberg in 1959, and it was strengthened by Subbarao in 1966 to say that both $p(2n)$ and $p(2n+1)$ take each value of parity infinitely often. These results have received several other proofs, each relying to some extent on manipulating generating functions. We give a new, self-contained proof of Subbarao's result by constructing a series of bijections and involutions, along the way getting a more general theorem concerning the enumeration of a special subset of integer partitions.

For each composition $\vec{c}$ we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions $Π^{\bullet}_{\vec{c}}$ is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition $\vec{c}$. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module $S^{B}$ where $B$ is a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by a knapsack integer partition and show the analogous results on homotopy type and action on the top homology.

The $U$-polynomial of Noble and Welsh is known to have intimate connections with the Potts model as well as with several important graph polynomials. For each graph $G$, $U(G)$ is equivalent to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial $XB(G)$. Moreover Sarmiento established the equivalence between $U$ and the polychromate of Brylawski. Loebl defined the $q$-dichromate $B_q(G,x,y)$ as a function of a graph $G$ and three independent variables $q,x,y$, proved that it is equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a certain external field contribution, and conjectured that the $q$-dichromate is equivalent to the $U$-polynomial. He also proposed a stronger conjecture on integer partitions. The aim of this paper is two-fold. We present a construction disproving Loebl's integer partitions conjecture, and we introduce a new function $B_{r,q}(G;x,k)$ which is also equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a (different) external field contribution, and we show that $B_{r,q}(G;x,k)$ is equivalent to the $U$-polynomial and to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial.
New identities for the polarized partitions and partitions with $d$-distant parts
In this paper we present a new class of integer partition identities. The number of partitions with d-distant parts can be represented as a sum of the number of partitions with 1-distant parts whose even parts are greater than twice the number of odd parts. We also provide a direct bijection between these classes of partitions.

Suppose $λ$ and $μ$ are integer partitions with $λ\supseteqμ$. Kenyon and Wilson have introduced the notion of a cover-inclusive Dyck tiling of the skew Young diagram $λ\setminusμ$, which has applications in the study of double-dimer models. We examine these tilings in more detail, giving various equivalent conditions and then proving a recurrence which we use to show that the entries of the transition matrix between two bases for a certain permutation module for the symmetric group are given by counting cover-inclusive Dyck tilings. We go on to consider the inverse of this matrix, showing that its entries are determined by what we call cover-expansive Dyck tilings. The fact that these two matrices are mutual inverses allows us to recover the main result of Kenyon and Wilson.
We then discuss the connections with recent results of Kim et al, who give, a simple expression for the sum, over all $μ$, of the number of cover-inclusive Dyck tilings of $λ\setminusμ$. Our results provide a new proof of this result. Finally, we show how to use our results to obtain simpler expressions for the homogeneous Garnir relations for the universal Specht modules introduced by Kleshchev, Mathas and Ram for the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras.
The Limit Shape of a Stochastic Bulgarian Solitaire
We consider a stochastic version of Bulgarian solitaire: A number of cards are distributed in piles; in every round a new pile is formed by cards from the old piles, and each card is picked independently with a fixed probability. This game corresponds to a multi-square birth-and-death process on Young diagrams of integer partitions. We prove that this process converges in a strong sense to an exponential limit shape as the number of cards tends to infinity. Furthermore, we bound the probability of deviation from the limit shape and relate this to the number of rounds played in the solitaire.
Sequences defined by h-vectors
In this paper we consider the sequence whose n^{th} term is the number of h-vectors of length n. We show that the n^{th} term of this sequence is bounded above by the n^{th} Fibonacci number and bounded below by the number if integer partitions of n into distinct parts. Further we show embedded sequences that directly relate to integer partitions.

An n-core partition is an integer partition whose Young diagram contains no hook lengths equal to n. We consider partitions that are simultaneously a-core and b-core for two relatively prime integers a and b. These are related to abacus diagrams and the combinatorics of the affine symmetric group (type A). We observe that self-conjugate simultaneous core partitions correspond to the combinatorics of type C, and use abacus diagrams to unite the discussion of these two sets of objects.
In particular, we prove that (2n)- and (2mn+1)-core partitions correspond naturally to dominant alcoves in the m-Shi arrangement of type C_n, generalizing a result of Fishel--Vazirani for type A. We also introduce a major statistic on simultaneous n- and (n+1)-core partitions and on self-conjugate simultaneous (2n)- and (2n+1)-core partitions that yield q-analogues of the Coxeter-Catalan numbers of type A and type C.
We present related conjectures and open questions on the average size of a simultaneous core partition, q-analogs of generalized Catalan numbers, and generalizations to other Coxeter groups. We also discuss connections with the cyclic sieving phenomenon and q,t-Catalan numbers.

If $a_1, a_2, ..., a_k$ and $n$ are positive integers such that $n = a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_k$, then the sum $a_1 + a_2 + ... + a_k$ is said to be a \emph{partition of $n$} of \emph{length $k$}, and $a_1, a_2, ..., a_k$ are said to be the \emph{parts} of the partition. Two partitions that differ only in the order of their parts are considered to be the same. We say that two partitions \emph{intersect} if they have at least one common part. We call a set $A$ of partitions \emph{intersecting} if any two partitions in $A$ intersect. Let $P_{n,k}$ be the set of all partitions of $n$ of length $k$. We conjecture that if $2 \leq k \leq n$, then the size of any intersecting subset of $P_{n,k}$ is at most the size of $P_{n-1,k-1}$, which is the size of the intersecting subset of $P_{n,k}$ consisting of those partitions which have 1 as a part. The conjecture is trivially true for $n \leq 2k$, and we prove it for $n \geq 5k^5$. We also generalise this for subsets of $P_{n,k}$ with the property that any two of their members have at least $t$ common parts.

In this paper we present a bijection $ω_n$ between two well known families of Catalan objects: the set of facets of the $m$-generalized cluster complex $Δ^m(A_n)$ and the set of dominant regions in the $m$-Catalan arrangement ${\rm Cat}^m(A_n)$, where $m\in\mathbb{N}_{>0}$. In particular, $ω_n$ bijects the facets containing the negative simple root $-α$ to dominant regions having the hyperplane $\{v\in V\mid<v,α>=m\}$ as separating wall. As a result, $ω_n$ restricts to a bijection between the set of facets of the positive part of $Δ^m(A_n)$ and the set of bounded dominant regions in ${\rm Cat}^m(A_n)$. The map $ω_n$ is a composition of two bijections in which integer partitions in an $m$-staircase shape come into play.
Young's lattice and dihedral symmetries revisited: Möbius strips and metric geometry
A cascade of dihedral symmetries is hidden in Young's lattice of integer partitions. In fact, for each integer N>2 the Hasse graph of the subposet consisting of the partitions with maximal hook length strictly less than N has the dihedral group of order 2N as its symmetry group. Here a new interpretation of those Hasse graphs is presented, namely as the 1-skeleta of the injective hulls of certain finite metric spaces.

We consider a special type of integer partitions in which the parts of the form $p^aq^b$, for some relatively prime integers $p$ and $q$, are restricted by divisibility conditions. We investigate the problems of generating and encoding those partitions and give some estimates for several partition functions.

The main aim of this article is to compute all the moments of the number of $p^\ell$-torsion elements in some type of nite abelian groups. The averages involved in these moments are those de ned for the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for class groups and their adaptation for Tate-Shafarevich groups. In particular, we prove that the heuristic model for Tate-Shafarevich groups is compatible with the recent conjecture of Poonen and Rains about the moments of the orders of $p$-Selmer groups of elliptic curves. For our purpose, we are led to de ne certain polynomials indexed by integer partitions and to study them in a combinatorial way. Moreover, from our probabilistic model, we derive combinatorial identities, some of which appearing to be new, the others being related to the theory of symmetric functions. In some sense, our method therefore gives for these identities a somehow natural algebraic context.

For two sets $A$ and $M$ of positive integers and for a positive integer $n$, let $p(n,A,M)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with parts in $A$ and multiplicities in $M$, that is, the number of representations of $n$ in the form $n=\sum_{a \in A} m_a a$ where $m_a \in M \cup {0}$ for all $a$, and all numbers $m_a$ but finitely many are 0. It is shown that there are infinite sets $A$ and $M$ so that $p(n,A,M)=1$ for every positive integer $n$. This settles (in a strong form) a problem of Canfield and Wilf. It is also shown that there is an infinite set $M$ and constants $c$ and $n_0$ so that for $A={k!}_{k \geq 1}$ or for $A=\{k^k\}_{k \geq 1}$, $0<p(n,A,M) \leq n^c$ for all $n>n_0$. This answers a question of Ljujić and Nathanson.

A poset can be regarded as a category in which there is at most one morphism between objects, and such that at most one of Hom(c,c') and Hom(c',c) is nonempty for distinct objects c,c'. If we keep in place the latter axiom but allow for more than one morphism between objects, we have a sort of generalized poset in which there are multiplicities attached to covering relations, and possibly nontrivial automorphism groups. We call such a category an "updown category". In this paper we give a precise definition of such categories and develop a theory for them. We also give a detailed account of ten examples, including updown categories of integer partitions, integer compositions, planar rooted trees, and rooted trees.

Let H be a k-uniform hypergraph whose vertices are the integers 1,...,N. We say that H contains a monotone path of length n if there are x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_{n+k-1} so that H contains all n edges of the form {x_i,x_{i+1},...,x_{i+k-1}}. Let N_k(q,n) be the smallest integer N so that every q-coloring of the edges of the complete k-uniform hypergraph on N vertices contains a monochromatic monotone path of length n. While the study of N_k(q,n) for specific values of k and q goes back (implicitly) to the seminal 1935 paper of Erdos and Szekeres, the problem of bounding N_k(q,n) for arbitrary k and q was studied by Fox, Pach, Sudakov and Suk.
Our main contribution here is a novel approach for bounding the Ramsey-type numbers N_k(q,n), based on establishing a surprisingly tight connection between them and the enumerative problem of counting high-dimensional integer partitions. Some of the concrete results we obtain using this approach are the following:
1. We show that for every fixed q we have N_3(q,n)=2^{Θ(n^{q-1})}, thus resolving an open problem raised by Fox et al.
2. We show that for every k >= 3, N_k(2,n)=2^{\cdot^{\cdot^{2^{(2-o(1))n}}}} where the height of the tower is k-2, thus resolving an open problem raised by Elias and Matousek.
3. We give a new pigeonhole proof of the Erdős-Szekeres Theorem on cups-vs-caps, similar to Seidenberg's proof of the Erdos-Szekeres Lemma on increasing/decreasing subsequences.
A refinement of the Cameron-Erdős Conjecture

In this paper we study sum-free subsets of the set $\{1,...,n\}$, that is, subsets of the first $n$ positive integers which contain no solution to the equation $x + y = z$. Cameron and Erdős conjectured in 1990 that the number of such sets is $O(2^{n/2})$. This conjecture was confirmed by Green and, independently, by Sapozhenko. Here we prove a refined version of their theorem, by showing that the number of sum-free subsets of $[n]$ of size $m$ is $2^{O(n/m)} {\lceil n/2 \rceil \choose m}$, for every $1 \le m \le \lceil n/2 \rceil$. For $m \ge \sqrt{n}$, this result is sharp up to the constant implicit in the $O(\cdot)$. Our proof uses a general bound on the number of independent sets of size $m$ in 3-uniform hypergraphs, proved recently by the authors, and new bounds on the number of integer partitions with small sumset.
The number of self-conjugate core partitions

A conjecture on the monotonicity of t-core partitions in an article of Stanton [Open positivity conjectures for integer partitions, Trends Math., 2:19-25, 1999] has been the catalyst for much recent research on t-core partitions. We conjecture Stanton-like monotonicity results comparing self-conjugate (t+2)- and t-core partitions of n.
We obtain partial results toward these conjectures for values of t that are large with respect to n, and an application to the block theory of the symmetric and alternating groups. To this end we prove formulas for the number of self-conjugate t-core partitions of n as a function of the number of self-conjugate partitions of smaller n. Additionally, we discuss the positivity of self-conjugate 6-core partitions and introduce areas for future research in representation theory, asymptotic analysis, unimodality, and numerical identities and inequalities.
Using GENERATINGFUNCTIONOLOGY to Enumerate Distinct-Multiplicity Partitions
This article, written in fond memory of Herbert Saul Wilf (June 13, 1931- Jan. 7, 2012), explores integer partitions where each part shows up a different number of times than the other parts (if it shows up at least once), thereby making a modest contribution towards the solution of one of the eight intrigiung problems posted by Herb Wilf on his website on Dec. 13, 2010
