The Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli-type matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the study of determinant formulas for Schur functions, Hamel and Goulden introduced a class of Giambelli-type matrices with respect to outside decompositions of partition diagrams, which unify the Jacobi-Trudi matrices, the Giambelli matrices and the Lascoux-Pragacz matrices. Stanley determined the Smith normal form of a specialized Jacobi-Trudi matrix. Motivated by Stanley's work, we obtain the Smith normal form of a specialized Giambelli matrix and a specialized Lascoux-Pragacz matrix. Furthermore, we show that, for a given partition, the Smith normal form of any specialized Giambelli-type matrix can be obtained from that of the corresponding specialization of the classical Giambelli matrix by a sequence of stabilization operations.

Flagged Grothendieck polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the flagged Grothendieck polynomials defined as the generating functions of flagged set-valued tableaux of Knutson-Miller-Yong can be expressed by a Jacobi-Trudi type determinant formula generalizing the work of Hudson-Matsumura. We also introduce the flagged skew Grothendieck polynomials in these two expressions and show that they coincide.
Jacobi-Trudi determinants over finite fields

In this paper, we work toward answering the following question: given a uniformly random algebra homomorphism from the ring of symmetric functions over the integers to a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, what is the probability that the Schur function $s_λ$ maps to zero? We show that this probability is always at least $1/q$ and is asymptotically $1/q$. Moreover, we give a complete classification of all shapes that can achieve probability $1/q$. In addition, we identify certain families of shapes where the corresponding Schur functions being sent to zero are independent events, and we look into the probability that a Schur functions is mapped to nonzero values in $\mathbb{F}_q$.

Factorial characters of some classical Lie groups
A definition is offered of the factorial characters of the general linear group, the symplectic group and the orthogonal group in an odd dimensional space. It is shown that these characters satisfy certain flagged Jacobi-Trudi identities. These identities are then used to give combinatorial expressions for the factorial characters: first in terms of a lattice path model and then in terms of the well known tableaux associated with the classical groups. Factorial Q-functions are then defined in terms of three sets of primed shifted tableaux, and shown to satisfy Tokuyama type identities in each case.

On Hamiltonians for six-vertex models
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we explain a connection between a family of free-fermionic six-vertex models and a discrete time evolution operator on one-dimensional Fermionic Fock space. The family of ice models generalize those with domain wall boundary, and we focus on two sets of Boltzmann weights whose partition functions were previously shown to generalize a generating function identity of Tokuyama. We produce associated Hamiltonians that recover these Boltzmann weights, and furthermore calculate the partition functions using commutation relations and elementary combinatorics. We give an expression for these partition functions as determinants, akin to the Jacobi-Trudi identity for Schur polynomials.

Using Grassmann calculus in combinatorics: Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma and Schur functions
Grassmann (or anti-commuting) variables are extensively used in theoretical physics. In this paper we use Grassmann variable calculus to give new proofs of celebrated combinatorial identities such as the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot formula for graphs with cycles and the Jacobi-Trudi identity. Moreover, we define a one parameter extension of Schur polynomials that obey a natural convolution identity.

Duality and deformations of stable Grothendieck polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Stable Grothendieck polynomials can be viewed as a K-theory analog of Schur polynomials. We extend stable Grothendieck polynomials to a two-parameter version, which we call canonical stable Grothendieck functions. These functions have the same structure constants (with scaling) as stable Grothendieck polynomials, and (composing with parameter switching) are self-dual under the standard involutive ring automorphism. We study various properties of these functions, including combinatorial formulas, Schur expansions, Jacobi-Trudi type identities, and associated Fomin-Greene operators.

The Smith Normal Form of a Specialized Jacobi-Trudi Matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathrm{JT}_λ$ be the Jacobi-Trudi matrix corresponding to the partition $λ$, so $\det\mathrm{JT}_λ$ is the Schur function $s_λ$ in the variables $x_1,x_2,\dots$. Set $x_1=\cdots=x_n=1$ and all other $x_i=0$. Then the entries of $\mathrm{JT}_λ$ become polynomials in $n$ of the form ${n+j-1\choose j}$. We determine the Smith normal form over the ring $\mathbb{Q}[n]$ of this specialization of $\mathrm{JT}_λ$. The proof carries over to the specialization $x_i=q^{i-1}$ for $1\leq i\leq n$ and $x_i=0$ for $i>n$, where we set $q^n=y$ and work over the ring $\mathbb{Q}(q)[y]$.

The asymptotic number of $12..d$-Avoiding Words with $r$ occurrences of each letter $1,2, ..., n$
Following Ekhad and Zeilberger (The Personal Journal of Shalosh B. Ekhad and Doron Zeilberger, Dec 5 2014; see also arXiv:1412.2035), we study the asymptotics for large $n$ of the number $A_{d,r}(n)$ of words of length $rn$ having $r$ letters $i$ for $i=1..n$, and having no increasing subsequence of length $d$. We prove an asymptotic formula conjectured by these authors, and we give explicitly the multiplicative constant appearing in the result, answering a question they asked. These two results should make the OEIS richer by 100+25=125 dollars. In the case $r=1$ we recover Regev's result for permutations. Our proof goes as follows: expressing $A_{d,r}(n)$ as a sum over tableaux via the RSK correspondence, we show that the only tableaux contributing to the sum are "almost" rectangular (in the scale $\sqrt{n}$). This relies on asymptotic estimates for the Kotska numbers $K_{λ,r^n}$ when $λ$ has a fixed number of parts. Contrarily to the case $r=1$ where these numbers are given by the hook-length formula, we don't have closed form expressions here, so to get our asymptotic estimates we rely on more delicate computations, via the Jacobi-Trudi identity and saddle-point estimates.

Vertex operators arising from Jacobi-Trudi identities
Published in Comm. Math. Phys. 346 (2016), 679-701 • View PublicationBIB
We give an interpretation of the boson-fermion correspondence as a direct consequence of Jacobi-Trudi identity. This viewpoint enables us to construct from a generalized version of the Jacobi-Trudi identity the action of Clifford algebra on polynomial algebras that arrives as analogues of the algebra of symmetric functions. A generalized Giambelli identity is also proved to follow from that identity. As applications, we obtain explicit formulas for vertex operators corresponding to characters of the classical Lie algebras, shifted Schur functions, and generalized Schur symmetric functions associated to linear recurrence relations.

Jacobi-Trudi determinants and characters of minimal affinizations
Published in Pacific J. Math. 272 (2014), no. 1, 237-244 • View PublicationBIB
In their study of characters of minimal affinizations of representations of orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras, Chari and Greenstein conjectured that certain Jacobi-Trudi determinants satisfy an alternating sum formula. In this note, we prove their conjecture and slightly more. The proof relies on some symmetries of the ring of symmetric functions discovered by Koike and Terada. Using results of Hernandez, Mukhin-Young, and Naoi, this implies that the characters of minimal affinizations in types B, C, and D are given by a Jacobi-Trudi determinant.

Viewing determinants as nonintersecting lattice paths yields classical determinantal identities bijectively
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show how general determinants may be viewed as generating functions of nonintersecting lattice paths, using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot interpretation of semistandard Young tableaux and the Jacobi-Trudi identity together with elementary observations. After some preparations, this point of view provides very simple "graphical proofs" for classical determinantal identities like the Cauchy--Binet formula, Dodgson's condensation formula, the Plücker relations and Laplace's expansion. Also, a determinantal identity generalizing Dodgson's condensation formula is presented, which might be new.

Composition of transpositions and equality of ribbon Schur Q-functions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 16:R110 (2009) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new operation on skew diagrams called composition of transpositions, and use it and a Jacobi-Trudi style formula to derive equalities on skew Schur Q-functions whose indexing shifted skew diagram is an ordinary skew diagram. When this skew diagram is a ribbon, we conjecture necessary and sufficient conditions for equality of ribbon Schur Q-functions. Moreover, we determine all relations between ribbon Schur Q-functions; show they supply a Z-basis for skew Schur Q-functions; assert their irreducibility; and show that the non-commutative analogue of ribbon Schur Q-functions is the flag h-vector of Eulerian posets.
The q-Log-convexity of the Generating Functions of the Squares of Binomial Coefficients
We prove a conjecture of Liu and Wang on the q-log-convexity of the polynomial sequence $\{\sum_{k=0}^n{n\choose k}^2q^k\}_{n\geq 0}$. By using Pieri's rule and the Jacobi-Trudi identity for Schur functions, we obtain an expansion of a sum of products of elementary symmetric functions in terms of Schur functions with nonnegative coefficients. Then the principal specialization leads to the q-log-convexity. We also prove that a technical condition of Liu and Wang holds for the squares of the binomial coefficients. Hence we deduce that the linear transformation with respect to the triangular array $\{{n\choose k}^2\}_{0\leq k\leq n}$ is log-convexity preserving.
Schur positivity of skew Schur function differences and applications to ribbons and Schubert classes
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 28:139--167 (2008), volume in memory of M Schocker • View PublicationBIB
Some new relations on skew Schur function differences are established both combinatorially using Schützenberger's jeu de taquin, and algebraically using Jacobi-Trudi determinants. These relations lead to the conclusion that certain differences of skew Schur functions are Schur positive. Applying these results to a basis of symmetric functions involving ribbon Schur functions confirms the validity of a Schur positivity conjecture due to McNamara. A further application reveals that certain differences of products of Schubert classes are Schubert positive.

Paths and tableaux descriptions of Jacobi-Trudi determinant associated with quantum affine algebra of type C_n
Published in SIGMA 3 (2007), 078, 20 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study the Jacobi-Trudi-type determinant which is conjectured to be the q-character of a certain, in many cases irreducible, finite-dimensional representation of the quantum affine algebra of type C_n. Like the D_n case studied by the authors recently, applying the Gessel-Viennot path method with an additional involution and a deformation of paths, we obtain a positive sum expression over a set of tuples of paths, which is naturally translated into the one over a set of tableaux on a skew diagram.

Paths and tableaux descriptions of Jacobi-Trudi determinant associated with quantum affine algebra of type D_n
Published in J. Alg. Combin. 26 (2007) 253-290 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Jacobi-Trudi-type determinant which is conjectured to be the q-character of a certain, in many cases irreducible, finite-dimensional representation of the quantum affine algebra of type D_n. Unlike the A_n and B_n cases, a simple application of the Gessel-Viennot path method does not yield a positive sum expression of the determinant over a set of tuples of paths. However, applying an additional involution and a deformation of paths, we obtain a positive sum expression over a set of tuples of paths, which is naturally translated into the one over a set of tableaux on a skew diagram.

Hyperdeterminantal expressions for Jack functions of rectangular shapes
Published in Journal of Algebra 320 (2008) 612--632 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a Jacobi-Trudi type formula for Jack functions of rectangular shapes. In this formula, we make use of a hyperdeterminant, which is Cayley's simple generalization of the determinant. In addition, after developing the general theory of hyperdeterminants, we give summation formulae for Schur functions involving hyperdeterminants, and evaluate Toeplitz-type hyperdeterminants by using Jack function theory.

Schur functions and alternating sums
Published in Electronic J. of Combinatorics, 11(2) (2004-2006), A5 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss several well known results about Schur functions that can be proved using cancellations in alternating summations; notably we shall discuss the Pieri and Murnaghan-Nakayama rules, the Jacobi-Trudi identity and its dual (Von N{ä}gelsbach-Kostka) identity, their proofs using the correspondence with lattice paths of Gessel and Viennot, and finally the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Our our goal is to show that the mentioned statements are closely related, and can be proved using variations of the same basic technique. We also want to emphasise the central part that is played by matrices over $\{0,1\}$ and over $\N$; we show that the Littlewood-Richardson rule as generalised by Zelevinsky has elegant formulations using either type of matrix, and that in both cases it can be obtained by two successive reductions from a large signed enumeration of such matrices, where the sign depends only on the row and column sums of the matrix.
